50 Shades Of Giulia: A Journey Through Alfa Romeo Colors

  • The name #AlfaRomeo is very much linked to bright red sports cars, and rightfully so, given the marque's back catalog.
Still, over the years, Alfa has offered many excellent alternatives to the classic #RossoAlfa so I've decided to pick #Top50 of my favorite shades and put together a sort of post-war history of Alfa Romeo cars through their colors. I hope you'll enjoy it!

So many colours... So many beautiful colours... I want to go back to times, when cars had proper colours, which screamed passion for the design.
Thank you Matteo for this brilliant video. I will watch it and stop it several times to really appreciate all the colours mentioned. Which is my favorite? All of them... :D

My family don't agree, but more than half the cars I see are grey/silver/black/white and many that aren't are very mild tints of these colours. Bring back bold, yes!

I recently had occasion to look up the color options for the 1978 Plymouth Horizon and there were two different oranges! Granted, one was very red, similar to VW Mars Red, but the other was true orange - and Chrysler didn't want to pair either with a tan interior! Anything other than black or white (with black dash and carpets) would've been an extra-special-order.

My father's 155 (which he has since 2006) is "Verde Mirto", I always liked that shade for the 155 along with the "Blu Nord" offered in the Super.
The 145 also had some great colours IMO. My favourites being "Rosso Prugna" for the phase 1 and "Giallo Zoe" for the facelift. There also were some cool metallic paints as Verde Cariabi, Verde Artic, Azzurro Fantasia and a few others.
156 had the Azzurro Nuvola, 166 had Aurora Nuvola
In newer examples, MiTo had "Giallo Imola" and a cool metallic brown. Giulietta (and MiTo) had "Nero Etna", satin "Griggio Magnesio", the metallic blue shades. In the last facelift they included "Verde Visconti".
That new Giulia in green is just pure class 👌🏻

Verde Mirto was very popular here in Italy on late 33s and 155s. And rightfully so, as it really suited those cars. Yes, the 145 had cool shades as well... Too many for a single video!

It's stunning. Interestingly, it was an adaptation of a design Pininfarina had recently presented, but on a Ferrari chassis, the P5. Alfa's president Luraghi liked it, and asked Pininfarina to adapt the design to a 33 chassis.

My Alfa GT was quite a rare colour. I bought the car new in 2006 and, rather than going for Alfa Red, I decided to be adventurous and choose a colour I hadn’t seen, but I thought would suit the car. That colour was Rosso Radicofani and with the tan leather and black interior was, in my opinion at least, a gorgeous combination. Rosso Radicofani is a metallic and the colour of red wine in the sunlight. It really sparkled on a sunny day. I’m pleased to say, although I no longer own the car, it is still on the road today and has covered about 130,000 miles or just over 200.000 kms. I would love to be reunited with it one day. Radicofani is a small town in the beautiful Val d’Orcia, Tuscany, famous for once being the home of Ghino di Tacco, Italy’s Robin Hood. Grazie mille Matteo for a fascinating and unusual video.

Thank you very much for sharing this interesting info about your GT. Rosso Radicofani was rarely seen indeed, so much so that I completely forgot about it. Radicofani is also on the Mille Miglia route, so I guess that's why Alfa used the name :)

I love that you created a video explaining all of the colors and their proper names - no one (except hardcore collectors and restorers) remembers them. I personally have a weakness for the "off" colors that so many people dispise - the deep greens, browns and warm whites and blues but particularly the greens and browns. A beautifully designed and sculpted car in a flawless shade of green or brown metallic just does something for me. And please, no - the offhand and disrespectful "turd" brown - Oy!

And nice to that Blu Posilippo is also on your List. I own a Alfasud that’s in that Blu with Velour Tan interior. Giallo Piper that I really like on Alfetta‘s. My old 159 in Grigio Stromboli (my profile pic) was absolutely beautiful. Changed with the light. It suits the most other Alfas too.
I must admit that Azzuro Nuvola and Bianco Aurora Iridescente are my two favourites from modern Alfas. There is also a gorgeous deep blue on the GT called Blu Chiaia di Luna that looks stunning on that car; even nicer than Blu Oltremare that I have on mine which turns purple in the sunlight.
OH! And Verde Minerva on the 166, Verde Gemma on the 147 and Rosso Rubino on the 159 - my favourite red ever.
There's also a stunning metallic brown available on the 159 in other parts of Europe and the Middle East but I never found what it was called.

Ordered my 156 in 1999 in Azzurro Achille with a red interior as I was an Alfa-Romantic and loved the reference to the 1960's Giulia and was fed up with the boring palette of cars generally at the time - red, black, white and silver. To me the most alfas are desirable in classic rosso, but a giulia is very imaginable in bianco, with a thin stripes of italian tricolore (as i am from Hungary, red-white-green means to me not only the italian, but the hungarian tricolore as well).

Great video! I’m glad to hear you describe Prugna as the most outrageous Alfa color ever. I bought a 1972 2000 GTV in this color and had a love/hate relationship with it. After body restoration, I decided to change the color to an Alfa color not mentioned here: Rubino Scuro, (used in the 1930s and on the 1961-68 2600).

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 роки тому +1

Indeed Prugna is a color so cool that you can love it and hate it at the same time, and I can understand your choice to go for another color during your car’s restoration. The GTV, in standard form, is perhaps too elegant a shape to pull Prugna off. I’d paint a Junior Zagato in it all day, but a GTV or a Spider? Not so much.

I have a GT in Stromboli Grey metalico 651with black and grey interior that works well and a GT in Nero Jarama metalico 846 with tan and black interior. Both metallics really sparkle in the right light and seem to have more noticeable flecks than most other car makes. Although the black and tan combination is probably my favourite on a GT, the Stromboli Grey really shows the cars lines and is probably my favourite colour for the 147, 156 and GT. A Cloverleaf GT in Atlantico? Blue is pretty eye catching too though!

Our first guilietta was in 1981 and red AR501 then we got a launch model 1.8 75 in red, it was AR530 and not as deep a red. Much brighter, we preferred the AR 501 shade. My 1984 Alfasud green 🍀 was metallic silver and our 75 🍀 was solid black I think AR 630. An interesting thing is after it got repaired after an accident the new paint had a brown base where the original one had a blue base from the factory. But from a distance it looked the same .

Red Giuliettas were super-rare here in Italy. People tended to buy them in white, ivory or brown. Once I found a red one in the classifieds, it was sold even before I could go see it!

Well of course Misano blue is the best but then I would say that 😜
You know back in my 20s as a new Alfa sales person, I remember we had a 166 on the forecourt in Bianco Aurora and we just couldn’t sell it . The grey skies of the Midlands in England very rarely let the sunshine on the wonderful paint and it sat for months looking like an oversized mushroom. Then one day we had a an amazing few weeks of sunshine and it’s pinks and greens iridescence started to sparkle and the car sold !

@@Matteo_Licata So , I left school and had no idea what I wanted to do in life . My mum at the time worked at the local job centre and suggested that whilst I thought about my career path I should get a job at the local Fiat/Alfa dealer . There was a job opportunity as a trainee parts person . It was on the youth training scheme and I had to go to college one day a week and learn about motor vehicles and business. Mum had always bought her Fiats from this dealer so she knew them well. I qualified as a parts person and would often talk a lot to the customers about their cars when they called in for spare parts . One day the general manager called me into his office to discuss my conduct at the parts desk . “You talk a lot to the customers don’t you ? “ he said . Sheepishly I apologised and said that I wouldn’t do it anymore. To my surprise he then offered me a company demonstrator and said how would you like to work in Alfa sales . I transitioned across from an oily polo shirt to a Hugo Boss suit and attempted to sell cars. I did ok , but if I’m honest being a car salesman wasn’t suited to my personality. I wasn’t tough enough and tended to give too much away in a desperate attempt to sell a car . I did it for about 10 years though before moving to the Fire Service where I still work today . But that’s how I fell in love with Italian cars .

Interesting stuff.... I confess I am a sucker for the bold but subdued shades of the '60s. Bianco Spino is an almost perfect way to show the lines of a car in any light.
It makes a sedan in a parking bay appear like a modeller's buck in a design studio.
For the same reason, I rather like the greys and pale blues of that era.
As to "Testa di Moro", the same phrase (or worse) was used in both the UK and France. Elderly relatives would speak of "N***** Brown' paint well into the 1970s. It is a name from another time and it is good that we no longer use it...
The Montreal.... You could paint it any colour...... In fact that goes for most of the Alfas of my childhood.
I still recall (1982?) strolling proudly up to the parts counter at a London Citroen dealership and asking for a can of orange paint for a 2cv. Asked which one, I said "A 1974 2cv4, Belgian import...."
The guy at the counter put five rattle cans of orange paint on front of me and asked again "Which one?"
    The start of an education....
    Nice video. Thank you.
