Britt, when I hear Angelina sing an old classic I usually like to suggest the original artist is not dancing in the streets but their spirit is dancing in the clouds. This one is a little different. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and a host of others just had a jam session in the clouds and when someone thinks that way you can better understand why Angelina sounds like she does. But as you do, then listen to the body of work by Billie and you realize that she
revolutionized the genre of jazz with her insertions of nuance, inflections, 'key'
changes within specific lines, and a host of other aspects relating to musicality

no one helping her perfect her craft and went directly to singing in Harlem night

Like any really good jazz artist, Angelina is never going to sound just like another artist. In fact, Angelina never sounds exactly the same in any of the repeated songs she sings, like "Fly Me to the Moon."

We all know very well Angelina's connection to Billie Holiday - here's a line I borrowed from a documentary by Alan Papier: “Billie has been a huge inspiration for Angelina, if not he hugest. She heard her sing at a very young age and really really picked up the baton and ran with it.” I like this "passing the baton" picture very much because it’s so true.
But in this case I'm not so sure about the core inspiration - in fact there are a lot of influences assembled on this song. Billie's cover is clearly jazz, as her orchestra is, but Angelina has chosen to be a crooner here (as she has been on occasion, notably on Frank Sinatra songs). So maybe she went more back to the original, as she often has - and this is by Fred Astair. I remember Philip mentioning in the comments section of his mashup that he tried Fred and Angelina but wasn't happy with the result because of the different keys (Angelina is much lower than Fred of course 🙂). On the other hand, the military orchestra that Angelina works with here went for the big band sound of the Swinging 60s, so you might hear Frank's voice in the background too. The 2018 stage performance they did together is impressive, but I like the video from the recording booth much more. Great reaction Britt. Love the timeless sound to Angelina's voice. To me she sounds more like Fred Astaire's style or even Frank Sinatra more so than Billie Holiday, still keeping it in that era but sounding current.
That was my feeling too. I wanted to say Fred Astair, but I was not surre he did sing it. And a clear touch of Frank Sinatra. But she went deeper than both of the mails. Smooth performance AJ! In this case Billie is the more inventive.

One of the most interesting things about Billie is how she didn't really even _try_ to deliver "perfect" vocals. (Apart from a few early tracks, maybe, where it sounds like she was being _told_ to try to do that.😁) The imperfections were usually intentional, but sometimes not. Either way, they became central to her signature style and influenced a lot of other artists. Angelina, OTOH, can be "perfect" or not, depending on the song and how she wants to sing it. (As an example of her "perfect" side, think of, say, her performance of "Song for A". [Darn it… looks like you haven't reacted to that yet, Britt.] Her vocal for that didn't feature any of the kinds of intentional "imperfections" that Angelina regularly uses "for effect" - most notably vocal fry, but also certain other things that I won't take the time to try to describe.) She has the benefit of not only hearing potentially every distinctive vocalist of the past 100 years, but also being free to sing in whatever way she wants. A lot of popular singers of the past (especially in the pre-singer-songwriter era) could only become popular because they worked within a rigid system of producers and "management", who basically told them what, when, where, and how they could sing (and I suppose that is still true to some extent today). Angelina has completely avoided this kind of thing up until quite recently (and possibly still does, but we don't really know what all she agreed to when she signed with Republic). Pretty much everything she has done so far has been _her_ choice (subject to the final approval of her parents). This has allowed her to sing all kinds of songs in all klnds of ways (and in all kinds of settings), inspired by all kinds of artists from the past and present.
Getting back to the "perfection" vs. "imperfection" thing… when Angelina was younger (pre-NGT), she couldn't really help but be imperfect. A lot of her early studio work reveals the kinds of vocal limitations common to very young singers (for example, getting pitchy). Then she "leveled up" quite quickly and became a _phenomenally_ good singer during her run on NGT (IMO). Still, the choice of song was an important one, because she still had a certain "hoarseness" in her voice that revealed itself especially around the transition points between her different registers. Her first two NGT performances, in particular, do not feature "perfect" vocals: they feature _stylistically interesting_ vocals "far beyond her years". Artistically complex vocals, one might say. But not at all "perfect". (I'm going to stop putting quotes around the word "perfect" now.) Fortunately, the songs she was singing didn't necessarily call for perfect vocals (being Billie Holiday songs and all). And clearly, Angelina didn't care about singing them perfectly: in the mostly a cappella second round, while other singers kind of fell apart when they couldn't sing as perfectly as they wanted, Angelina just rolled with whatever her voice did, and made it part of the performance (although she did make a bit of a "stank face" at one point, perhaps in response to something that didn't come out exactly the way she had planned). Like Billie, she took what she was given - in terms of having, arguably, a somewhat "limited" voice at the time - and made the most of it by playing up the stylistic aspects. (Not in a "cynical" way, but in a very genuine way.) The music video for "I Put a Spell on You" is basically the ultimate example of using various kinds of imperfection in stylistic ways to deliver an _incredible_ performance. (I'm pretty sure I don't have to explain that statement at all.) By the age of, say, 10½ she had lost most of the lingering childlike qualities in her voice (or maybe learned how to more effectively cover them up?), so she could now sing perfectly in a way she couldn't before. And while her "informal" performances (e.g., at home) continued to be quite imperfect in many different ways, her "formal" performances (e.g., on TV) became more and more polished.
Then recently (like, the last couple of years), ISTM that she has been taking more "risks" with how she sings (especially in her TTs and IGs). Not "risks" in terms of vocal health, of course, but just "risks" in terms of "inviting imperfection". The standard techniques of vocal fry, etc., which she can control so easily, have been joined by less "controlled" techniques that I can't even describe succinctly. For example, there's a certain way she "flips" between notes that makes me think of a rubber band - or maybe, like, one of those balls on a rubber band attached to a paddle: the intention is to strike the ball repeatedly, but the exact way that happens is impossible to predict (unless you're, like, freakishly good at it). Similarly, these little flips, or whatever, are entirely planned, but in their execution she seems to leave it to chance, to some degree, how exactly they will happen. It's hard to explain… I have described her vocals in the past as being a mix of "control" and "freedom". The "freedom" historically has been reflected more in the stylistic choices she would make, whereas the "control" was reflected in how those choices were executed. Now it feels like the execution is moving more towards the "freedom" side of the ledger. Which is interesting. Especially as it relates to her upcoming album. I'm wondering how "free" she's going to be with her vocals on that. I guess the teaser for "Love Don't Let Me Go" has been pretty encouraging in this regard: what little we've heard at this point doesn't sound "overproduced" or "overly polished" to me. You can hear the character in her voice and even, if only briefly, some imperfection, as well. Obviously, all will be revealed in a few days, but I suspect I will still be left wondering another thing: just how much "artistic control" she really had in the making of her first RR album. It would be great to think she had essentially _complete_ control, but I don't know how realistic that is.

Yeah it's not the same at all, but it is exactly the same. Angie is sporting an insanely beautiful voice, but the rest is the same, in description anyway. Timing, choices, interesting, moving, captivating, different, playful. I can love Billie Holiday simply because of how interesting she is. I don't like her voice, her skills aren't as good, and it doesn't even matter. Still love it. I like how you put it though, in spirit. Because as much as Angie feels similar, even on this same song they are way different. It's just the things we notice and like about the artistry, they will list off the same, and they will remind you of one another a lot of the time. I'm really impressed and glad she loved and understood what Billie Holiday was doing, as a small child. Such an interesting teacher. No wonder she has such a great feel for things. All the tools in the world, taught by someone who by all rights should have been awful, but was instead brilliant. Angelina doesn't need to be a great artist, but she is. Great singers are fine too. It's just not going to get to people as much. There is a ceiling on that. It's consistent, there is money and fame in it, but artistry can be everything. If I wanted to be a great artists I would have listened to more than a couple Billie Holiday songs too, and it's evident why immediately.
They picked the wrong song. “A fool to want you” would have been a lot better choice.
