The more I learn about Angelina Jordan; jazz singer, speaking multiple languages, published author, designing her own cloths and merchandise, arranging her own music - the more I believe we are seeing a girl who has never experienced the thought “I can’t do that”!
🎯🎯🎯🎯🏅🏆
Bullseye.
Angelina is a special person. She doesn’t wear shoes because a shoeless girl she met when she was 6. She gave the girl the shoes she was wearing, and has promised to not wear shoes when performing until all children have them. She gave her NGT winnings to charity and has continued giving since then. She speaks Norwegian, Farsi and English and some Swedish and Japanese. She always seems humble and demure, in interviews and even in random meets with fans. She is human, in some of the rehearsals with her regular band you see her being a bit funny and silly. My take from that is that rehearsals are fun, this is what she likes doing.
Angelina had just turned nine by two months previous to this recording. The most amazing thing about this incredible performance is that she is totally responsible for the outcome. She had listened to the original performance of the 1956 recording by Jay Hawkins. She then rearranged the lyrics and music. You can see her rehearsals directing the musicians as to how she wants it to sound. At the very beginning of this video you can see her writing changes for the instruments which she gives to the director. In a subsequent interview he stated that she was very polite as she referred to the changes as her wishes. There are at least two videos of her rehearsals with this band showing her interactions with them. According to various interviews with musicians she plays with she is affectionately referred to as the boss. She is also known as a musician magnet. Hard to contemplate an eight year old girl even knowing about this song let alone rearranging and singing it. This rendition by Angelina is historic.
«According to various interviews with musicians she plays with » not easy to find these talks... can you post a link? thanks
Julio Sameiro You have to go to the Norwegian music industry news and TV news to try and find make sure to turn on translations as some work and some don’t. It is a time consuming process. Sometimes the content disappears. Some is on the web and some is on Utube
I’m glad you pointed out that she is in charge - I haven’t read another review that mentions this and I love the conductor’s expression as he reads through her notes. Thanks!
@@juliosameiro After two years researching this and other AJ memes, I have to conclude that, like whispers in the dark, many of her lauded skills are so far unsubstantiated; they may or may not be true. The number of languages she can speak, instruments she can play, arranging skills, etc., etc., are, with very few exceptions, guesses, assumptions, even wishful thinking on the part of enthusiastic fans, but still passed around as facts. For the most part we simply do not know what is true and what is mere conjecture because Angelina, her family, her management, her music label, her friends, the musicians, teachers and technicians who have worked with her, have said next to nothing on the public record. Superfan Alan Papier has interviewed the two guitarists who accompanied Angelina on her home recordings and there are fragmentary quotes from tv and radio 'interviews' in which she and her mother are notoriously tight-lipped. Mery Zamani, credited as a major influence on her life and career to date, has never spoken a single word publicly about her grand-daughter, as far as I'm aware. I used to teach journalism and I told my students that there's only one solid, undeniable, verifiable, factual basis when reporting anything about anyone; the recorded words or actions of that individual ... the 'primary' source. If you are quoting from a trusted source, their words must be attributed to them, not to the individual concerned ... this is a secondary source. Beyond that, you are dealing with tertiary sources: anonymous allegations, hearsay, circumstantial evidence, assumption and good old fashioned gossip. R (Australia)
There is another reason that she doesn’t wear shoes. When Angelina was 6 years old and was travelling with her family, she came across a young shoeless street vendor orphan girl weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn some money to support herself and her siblings. After chatting with her for a while and without prompting from her parents she gave her shoes to the orphan girl who promised to pray for Angelina. That evening Angelina recorded that in her diary and vowed to always remember that girl. She always performs barefoot in public, to honour her vow and to bring attention to the many needy children around the world.
Thank you for another great reaction video of Angelina and I look forward to your next one.
It still brings me to tears that she was that empathetic at 6 years old and she is 13 now and still after 7 years she sticks to her message like that. What a powerful and beautiful message from an amazing girl.
Ty🌹💕 very awesome Child!! I appreciate your Story of Angelina & shows how God gave this Child such a Voice & Career🌹💕 I love her!!
You told the story much better than I did. Thank you.
@@janeladik1580 we all want the whole world to know about this beautiful human being named Angelina Jordan regardless of how we tell her story.
Thank you for supporting her and please stay safe.
@@sophiahoward5655
It is my pleasure to spread her news.
Her lower register, attitude, and her at the age of 8 is stunning. This is one of my favorites. Marc you are favorite critic.
I keep coming back to this performance. The timing, the phrasing, the way she works with the band (note how she comes in the end of the middle section like a continuation of the band), the way even her powerful growls are still melodic - I love every second of this.
All I can say is Angelina is my favorite singer.
I am so proud of her "raw talent" that makes things possible. Obviously, she loves music and wants to interpret her way which makes it great!
U are right on Dr Marc she is a phenom....u can see how the professional musicians react to her and under her direction...she knows exactly what she's doing and can make her voice do anything....she's an old soul in a 9yr old body...I was playing barbies at 9...just sayin'!!! Also "Its a man's world" is amazing as well...she is a sweet altruistic little girl...donated all of her winnings from Norways Got Talent to charity ! That says it all!
Thanks for that information about her generosity to charity. May she always prosper in more than one especially in her instrument which is the most amazing talented voice I heard in many years.
At the beginning she handed the production director score change notes. The musicians who were invited to play were initially apprehensive but Angelina controlled the room to their delight. Creedence Clearwater Revival, Annie Lennox, and Nina Simone have covers. Angelina tributes Screamin' Jay Hawkins with this gem. Angelina recorded in her diary her thoughts about when she gave her shoes to the homeless girl and she shares those in an interview. This studio session is an example of advanced jazz master class taught by a 9 year old.
" This studio session is an example of advanced jazz master class taught by a 9 year old." sounds right to me.
David Touma tells the story well of her giving away her shoes at 6 years old. And of her writing about the encounter in her diary. Family friend Erling Kittelsen, a famous poet, read the diary entry and said it should be published. And so she became Norway’s youngest published author. I finally managed to get a copy of the book and am in the process of translating it into English. I have a friend that speaks Norwegian and he is helping me tweak the Google translate that isn’t always exactly what was meant. The book goes back and forth between what she is seeing and doing and what she is feeling and thinking. And this is a very deep thinking 6 year old writing. She has said in interviews that she writes everyday. And that she would rather sing or write than talk. She is special. I’ll close with Angelina’s words from her book.
“The world is very strange, right there and then I felt that my door in my heart opened and that it was filled with lots of light. It was as if there were a staircase from earth to heaven. I climbed the stairs, being able to do something for another human being was so big, hard to say exactly ...”
Interesting to hear how the book came about.
Is it really true that she wrote the diary back when she was 6 though? While the language is childish, it is also very poetic, and as you say, she is reflecting on her own reactions in a way that I can’t even imagine a 6 y/o do.
On another note, what Marc says about parenting is true, because her mother was there when she gave away her shoes - didn’t initiate it, but silently approved (and probably carried her girl home afterwards).
From the book, (my attempt at translation, I’m Swedish):
“You are like a proper princess,
You're so pretty and look at your beautiful shoes.
Lovely green. I have never seen such nice shoes."
I have to come up with something to be with her.
“These shoes do not fit ...”
I look cautiously at mom.
Mom and I talk with our eyes.
"Do you want the shoes?" I ask.
@@xartisan576 That is just crushingly beautiful. Thanks.
I am so happy to see you do this one! When I watched your very first Angelina reaction (bohemian), I commented that you were trying to explain the unexplainable. I think on this reaction you have realized what I really meant. This is not something a person can just learn, or be told to do by adults. This is something coming from deep inside this little girl. This is a lifelong passion for Angelina, and you can just feel it when she sings. She is one of the most natural singers I have ever seen. It's never like she is trying to do something... she's just doing it.
*And the big news today is that Angelina has signed as the highest priority artist at Republic Records!! So we will be hearing a lot more from Angelina in the near future!!*
Also, I'm not sure if I left her bio for you, but you asked for more information, so here you go......
*Angelina Jordan*
- Angelina Jordan was born Jan 10 2006 in Oslo, Norway. She is currently 14
- She began singing at the age of one and a half
- At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through her grandmother and started studying all the greats from Jazz history with youtube videos.
- *Why Angelina always sings barefoot* - When Angelina was 6 years old, she was traveling with her grandmother and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. They talked for a while and discussed their dreams. It was cold and the girl had scars on her feet. Seeing this, Angelina took off her shoes and gave them to the girl. The girl thanked her and told Angelina she would pray for her every day. That day Angelina made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world could have shoes. To this day, whenever Angelina is performing in public, she sings barefoot as a way to remember that little girl and to remind us that there are less fortunate people in the world that could use our help.
Angelina holds so true to this promise that she has sung outdoors in Norway, in december... barefoot. She has sung at a dinner with ex-pres Obama... barefoot. She went on AGT (possibly the biggest stage in the world)...bare foot. She made a promise at 6 years old, and has stuck strong to it for years. That takes a special kind of person.
- She has always been the driving force behind her own singing career. It was her that asked her mother to take her to Norways Got Talent, where she auditioned at 7 years old and went on to win the whole show at just 8 years old.
- In an interview after the show, when asked what she was going to do with the prize money, the 8 year old replied, "I would like to give it to orphans that need clothes and shoes"
- When Angelina was 9 years old she became the youngest published author in Norway, when she wrote a book about the story of why she doesn't wear shoes when she sings. She donated proceeds from the sales of the book to help children in need.
- The reason you may not have heard of her is because her parents are very protective of her childhood. They do not want her to be thrust into stardom before she has a chance to grow up as a normal child, and finish her education. They allow her to do a few select shows (mainly private and charity events) with a couple public shows every year when she is out of school. Her mother said in an interview that they have turned down 90% of the offers that come in. I have heard they have turned down offers from many major record labels and even disney.
- Angelina has covered more than 120 songs and over 65 artists in the last 6 years. She always selects the songs herself... everything ranging from old classic jazz to modern pop. She is able to change her voice to match any song she sings and make it her own. (she can cover Amy Winehouse and Lana del Rey like nobody else)
- Angelina has collaborated with some very big names over the last few years... Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, David Foster, Alan Walker and many more. All of which heard her and were blown away by her talent.
- Angelina has written three of her own original songs: "What is Life", "Shield" and "Oslo". (all are amazing...all can be found on youtube)
In summary, Angelina Jordan is destined to be one of the greatest singers to have ever lived. This is just my opinion, but if you listen closely to any of her stuff you will hear the greatness. She sings with a natural style. There is no acting, no showing off, there are no unnecessary runs, or big belty notes just for the purpose of saying "hey look at me sing". She once said "when I sing I go into a magical world in my head", and you can always hear the results of that. When Angelina sings it is pure soul, pure emotion, pure music.
@Concerned Citizen The official announcement was just today. She may not appear on the artist list until something is actually released.
HIP HIP HURRA. Now it is even harder to wait.
As usual you answer the question's I have been thinking in my head! Such as, what is Angelina doing now? And you provided the answer!!!! "Angelina has signed as the highest priority artist at Republic Records"! I'm so excited and can hardly wait to buy whatever form of music she puts out as her singing makes me so happy! Thank you Rusty Shackleford! God Bless and Stay Safe from a Angelina Fan living in Lakewood, Washington USA
That's crazy exiting news Rusty, could you please provide me the link to this announcement. Thanks

Angelina is a Celestial being in a mere mortal's body. A gift from the Universe to calm a chaotic wourld!! I am grateful to be alive in these times to bare witness to arguable the best vocal artist of the last 2 century's. A legend has been born and is thriving💜!
or she is autistic. to me she looks like she is one of us. asperger.
@@lizvlx I like many others on her journey have been following her since she was 6. I am unaware of her being anywhere on the spectrum. Do you have knowledge to make that claim? Being a prodigy does not mean one is on the spectrum. No judgemental towards anyone who is. Just facts please!
I put a few of her covers on a CD and played it to some friends who are not really into new artists. They thought she was a grown woman.
really interested in the book.
I love Angelina Jordan, good or bad I'm interested in seeing her future. I just hope she ends up happy
Hi marc you see an astonish singer here, but she is also the wonderfull composer behind this Scene. She is always the boss and trained the musicians in a lovely way to play in the way she wants to sing. It seems she has so many songs in her mind like a musicbox. Therefore you can find over 120 Videos on YT when she was 12y. At the first video at 1,5y she try to sing like whitney h. She said singing is like breathing to her and trained her voice every day. She gave many Stage Performance without fear and with a full certainty
Think that’s the first of your videos I have seen you laugh like that 😄 Love it!
When you find out why she wears no shoes you will have unlocked her personality...I've read that she sees her vocation as using her gift to alleviate suffering..she has to date helped raise £24million for charities,.at 5 (I think) her ambition was to sing at the Nobel Peace Awards..AT 5! She achieved her ambition at 8 I believe..she has written a book about a Chance meeting with a street girl in Iran..see if you can get hold of it somehow..I must say I absolutely value your quality reaction to AJ..take care ))
and the money generated from her book (by the youngest published author in Norway) goes to charity... Sometimes I feel like I've done nothing with my 6 decades.
U should react to "A million years ago" totally shows her beautiful warm lower register and versatility...an acoustic beautiful rendition with an amazing guitarist Eric Mendes... great reaction!
Ivan Mendes
The guitarist is IVAN Mendes and he is also awesome.
I have watched so many of the UA-cam videos and the ones that include her parents and grandparents definitely illustrate the kind of nurturing you are talking about. I enjoy your positivity in your videos.
I am loving the last seconds of the video as she put her finger to the chin and reflects on how she can make it better for the next time. A real pro.
Mery Zamani,Angelina's grandmother was a child prodigy also painting and writing poetry at only 9 years of age.Angelina has written in her dairy since she has learned to write.A writer that saw her barefoot story there encouraged her to share that story in a published book which she did.Besides exposing Angelina to jazz and blues music I think those other influences have inspired, guided released her artistic visions. And that's only part of her puzzle obviously. Thanks for your reaction,I enjoyed the blend of technical insight and obvious passion that you have for music and artists.
I don't care if you don't want me, I'm yours right now: this last part of the song is fascinating as if she lived in reincarnation, beautiful.
Angelina is one of the most addictive singers I have ever listened to, & one of the very few, that can pull you right into the song, making you feel, every word, every note, & every emotion. ❤️💙 I always have this feeling that Angelina is not only channeling some of these late great singers, but that they also pass through her, when she is singing their song ❤️💙 A rare beauty, in every sense of the word ❤️💙 Loved your reaction!!!
the final image of Angelina with her face as saying "....and now ...hmmmm where did I leave my doll?",It is the most subtle comment and successful I have heard about Angelina's talent, but is it true, that the transformation from little girl to mega singer and vice versa? is awesome! ,...and priceless!
I think Angelina is incredible. Speaking of kids (and omg Dr. Marc, 5?? Blessed but exhausted no doubt lol), my hope is that Angelina embraces being a kid for a long time yet. It is disturbing how quickly we as a society push kids to grow up and sexualize them long before they have a chance to grow into that sense of themselves on their own. So far, Angelina (and I can only assume her parents) have done a wonderful job of keeping things age-appropriate with song choices, clothing, etc. I hope her popularity and success can serve as proof that kids can be kids and still make it. Thoroughly enjoyed this reaction Dr. Marc.
Love the reaction. I think your point on, what you call "sludge" , is spot on with Angelina. As for your point on her natural musicality, I think it comes from a great ear, that physically developed at an extremely early age. With that and how music effects the brain (Not just the audio cortex, but multiple parts of the brain), this stimulated, and created neuron connections at an age where the brain is growing quickly, and developing . Thus when Grandma was playing her great Jazz records, they were kinda directing how her brain matured. So that when she started singing. she just needed to figure out how to match her voice to how she thought the song should sound. Plus, being in Oslo, Norway, surprisingly, has excellent schools for the arts, and actually has a Jazz record shop, yes vinyl!!!
Dr Marc, I love your reaction videos. It’s not just “reaction”, it’s analysis based on expert knowledge and years of experience. I’m not sure if it was mentioned in the comments below but Angelina was just signed to Republic Records. Her family had held off until now because they wanted her to have a relatively normal childhood. Republic is a great choice for her because they are small but affiliated with Universal, have a reputation for being artist friendly and carry such “small” name artists as Taylor Swift, Drake and Ariana Grande and many others. This is obviously going to change the game a great deal for all of us. There likely won’t be the stream of covers coming to UA-cam but they will be professionally produced original music and I’m looking forward to it. And, if the world ever gets back to normal, tours. I guess most of her content will be shared via VEVO since they are affiliated with Universal..
I really enjoyed your analysis ... When Angelina (from Oslo) was 6 years old, she met a homeless girl around her age in Iran. (Her grandmother is Iranian artist Mery Zamani.) The girl did not have any shoes, and Angelina says her feet were scarred. Angelina gave the girl her own shoes. Not only does Angelina honor the young homeless girl she met by performing barefoot, but she also wrote a book about the experience. It’s called Mellom to jherter (“Between two hearts”), and was published in 2015, when Angelina was only 9 years old. According to her website, Angelina then “vowed never to appear on stage again wearing shoes until all the world’s children had them.” She keeps that promise to this day, as she says that little girl “is always in my heart.”
She arranges all of her own music.
Dr., like a Stradivarius she gets better with age. Your reactions are so informative. You are doing her Angels proud. So happy to follow your journey with this girl. 🌺
I have an enjoyable time listening to Angelina! It's a magic and out of the world! Thanks a lot for your honest and professional reaction! Like!
She wrote a book about her beeing barefoot on stage when she was seven. She was the youngest author ever published in Norway
I get your socks and shoes comment and knowing her past with the story about why she performs barefoot in public it actually lines up with what you're saying. Her parents could have told her that it was a sweet sentiment but she needs to cover up because of weather/temperature/whatever reason but they understood her perspective and allowed it, and it became a sort of calling card for her beyond her already wonderful talent. On top of that, her parents are actually wonderful, she is only allowed to perform a certain number of times a year, she goes to public school with all her peers, and she lives the life of a regular child, albeit with a bit of singing mixed in. She is probably going to be the most normal "child star" ever because of her parents and I really respect and appreciate them for that.
Such a great reaction to our princess!
This girl is a genius,. As Stravinsky once said, Genius learns from itself; talent learns from others.
I agree with you she has a special gift. I am mesmerized at everything she does. I love her very young stuff because I love the non perfect aspects of her voice. Now her perfection is so smooth. Can't wait to hear more as she gets older!
Oh, ho! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the tale of why she doesn't wear shoes on stage. I've said this before but it bears repeating. Her talent has made her famous. Her character has made her beloved. Anyway, thanks for the reaction. :)
The greatest reaction of the 100s I have seen
She is so amazing all you can do is laugh in awe.
Thank you
The only thing bigger than her voice is her heart.
Her family has posted a trainload of familiy videos with her on youtube. My impression - she's a humble and empathic personality. At AGTC they asked her what winning the show would mean for her. "I want to stay humble, continue working hard and doing great songs." Working hard? Would you expect that from a 13 year old, imagining how she wants to be? It's surely not talent alone why she is so good a what she does.
She experienced jazz music from a very young age and started singing from 1,5 years. I think that played a great role. She said she's singing 4-5 hours a day and it's even more important than breathing to her. Her intro for the finale at Norways got Talent illustrated it nicely. "I love singing. Tonight I'll be showing you just how much".
She once said jazz and blues music has so much heart, she wants to bring it back. So it's all about music with a heart and about emotions for her - and spreading love (her words). I hope she can sustain that positive attitude, realities in life can be harsh.
Brilliant reaction and analysis!!!
Wow five kids!? My 3 are hard enough lol.
I was hoping you would react to this, given the theatrics.
What I found awesome were:
- that little shriek noise she makes in the beginning
- her confidence
- those low notes she sings at the end
I found your thoughts awesome also! Such as on the topic of parenting affecting a child’s art, very interesting. I believe it to be 💯% true. As parents, we positively or negatively affect our children’s self esteem, which may alter the quality of their art, or their direction, or both.
I also agree that if we did not have our past stresses and grievances, many of us would make better art or music, but I’m sure we can all agree that a lot of amazing art and music came from lots of heartache and tragedy as well...✌🏽
Great reaction Dr. 👏🏽
I’ve waited for you to react to this performance. Somehow I didn’t expect you to enjoy this, but I’m thrilled that you did. In my mind it is an absolutely mind blowing tour de force at an unbelievable age. Ever since I first heard her I need a daily dose of her singing. No matter how many times I’ve watched her videos, I’m ready to listen to it again. I especially enjoy reactors first time hearing her perform. Thanks for your reaction and sharing your expertise.
I also agree with your comments about talent. I've long said that it really doesn't exist. We are all made of water, so to speak, and sure we have developed different ways, but I've been in the arts my whole life and almost everything I know has been because of exposure and work. I teach watercolor painting and it's mostly about paying attention to what you're doing. The mistakes people make are almost always technical. I also run a writer's group, wherein most new writers make ten broadly conceptual mistakes within the first page. All of those are easy to spot, easy to point to and easy to correct. The learning process itself is where talent comes in. The question becomes: Are you willing and able to apply time to task or are you just paying passing attention to the issues as they come up? Talent becomes more about attitude and commitment than anything else.
gary Please tell me how you explain the sudden emergence of musical (or other arts, mathematics, etc.) genius of autistic savants?
Now you have finally watched the first video that I watched of her last year. Ha ha. This is still her best performance ever!
If people out there think she is mimicking, they should watch the Screaming Jay Hawkins version that she is doing a cover of and you will see how that is not true, she changed up this song so much. On a personal note about Angelina, she has three original songs she wrote and 2 more that were written for her, but I think she is going to be quite a songwriter someday. I say this because I saw an interview about her that she writes in a diary every day, and she keeps all these diaries, so she has a lot of untouched material. In this interview at the release of her book, they read from her diary about a dream she had after the encounter with the street girl, the writing was beautiful about a stairway to heaven and helping another human being, it was so touching.
They signed a label. Love Angelina.
she wrote a book about why she performs barefoot. i have not yet found an english version of it yet
Wonderful reaction! My favorite of all those reacting to this amazing performance by AJ, and especially because of your understanding of practice and how it creates talent. Angelina has been listening to and practicing jazz since she was 1-1/2. Call it an "old soul" or whatever, but she clearly was born to do what she's doing, and thank goodness she came into a family that delights in helping her do it. And freeing her to do it. As a creator (wish I was a singer, I'd study with you), I was a bit squashed as a kid. Had to learn to free myself, and here's a child with enormous natural gifts who was given the support. We see how exciting that is for her and all of us.
Awesome and insightful reaction, thank you - new sub. Angelina's main art inspiration is grandma, a well known artist from Iran. Grandma introduced AJ to jazz at a very young age, and together with the unconditional support from the rest of her family, this has been her artistic platform. Most of her formal training has been from school and after school programs, some of it from the Waldorf school system, which in itself is very arts and crafts oriented.
This was AwZm Marc, loved your reACTion and input
Rhiannon Giddens performs barefoot too. Now you know the story of her barefootedness. At that time, at 6, she wrote in her diary that a door opened in her heart and there was a stairway to heaven and she climbed the stairs. She said that to help another human being was something so great it was hard to talk about. She's a lot more than a singer. And I just learned she signed with Republic. Not too shabby.
She's my favorite Chocolate Drop.
Not bad for a 9 year old. Take a fifties classic song by Screaming Jay Hawkins, arrange the music and then sing like a 40 year old jazz singer. This girl is a gift to us all. Welcome to Angelina's world.
Thank you for your comments and outlook on her.
What you say is true. It brings tears to my eyes to think what we could do with our talents if we could express like she does.
I love that she covered the original. Most people cover the Nina Simone 1965 version, but Angelina covers screamin' Jay Hawkins 1956 original except that her screaming is a lot more subdued than his. More subdued and infinitely better.
I really enjoy your reaction videos to AJA.
I remember your first one, when you did the Bohemian Rhapsody 1 and I thought, although very educational, that it was to much of the technical focus and to little of how that performance made you feel.
I like the blend you've got going now better.
AJA is all about feelings, interpetation and storytelling.
I would advice you to check out some of AJA's stripped down acoustic stuff (she has loads of them and they are all great), her own material/written for (Oslo, Shield, What is life / Song for A) and also her earliest stuff from when she was 6-7 years old
I appreciated your perspective on talents.
I know the story why she doesn't wear shoes and it's heart warming to see another area where she has invested commitment. What I see when she puts her right foot over her left toes is a need to warm them, which reminds us that she may not be comfortable in her bare feet at all times. To hold that commitment while continuing to overcome adversity brings tears to my eyes. I pray this young woman stays in our world for a very long time! We need her to teach us many important character lessons, including being open to the power of music. Thanks for featuring her with your great reaction!
Loved your reaction to this one, very cool, unbelieveable little lady
What fun! Now you know why fans wanted you to check this out. Your enjoyment is contagious. Smiles become laughter. Angelina's total commitment to the song at age 9 is astounding. There are a couple other videos of this song when she is older. Growls are suppressed. Whistle tone is breath out, not breath in. They're good, but not as much fun. Her arrangement based on Screamin' Jay's version is killer. No doubt, nature and nurture . Your laughter at, "I love you! I love you! ..." with growls was great. It has to be good, but it has to be entertaining. She draws me in more consistently than any artist has. There's a song or two that hit with others; there's 100 songs that hit with Angelina. Now with her signing with Republic, I'm ready for her, our, future.
Love your stuff, man. Thanks.
I notice most reactioners never mention the incredible breath control she has at the end where she starts with "I'm yours" and ends with the sustained " now" and she decrescendos beautifully to end it. Awesome!!
Great news! Angelina just signed with Republic records Amy Winehouse's old label; Amy had a great influence on Angelina back when she was 10/11 years old. This may have influenced her decision. I'm so happy for her. This must still be a good record company to contract with because Taylor Swift, and Jonas brothers are with them also... I will pray for her. This is her big chance, because U Tube would only take her so far.
My understand that her grandmother played a lot of classic jazz around her.
Loved what you said at the end. Thank you! This is giving me hope. I will surely read the book you mentioned. Good day!
Amazing
Your comment about the “sludge” we bring to our art when we’re older is exactly what Picasso realized. He said he wished he could always paint like a child. Pure freedom not bound by inward voices. It’s true
Angelina is a genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When will the naysayers get it?? The young lady is brilliant!!!! She takes songs often sung by the greatest singers who’ve ever lived and makes them her own. HER OWN!!!! And she shares her heart with us. During Covid I’ve had chance to listen and listen to her and she really is for many of us an angelic salve that washes away the stress and upset so in your face in these crazy times!!!! Just sit back and listen and soak it up. We are blessed to have her in our world!!!!!!!!!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Quite simply, that is the best jazz that you will ever witness. Angelina is able to produce any sounds that she wants to.
I read and or skimmed most of the comments and I do not want to repeat what others have said, but I didn't notice anyone mention that she is the youngest published author in Norway. She tells the story of the shoes in that book. She is also a very talented artist, like her grandmother. She is incredible. How many people can say that they performed at the concert for the Nobel Peace Prize awards, and for Quincy Jones's 85th birthday. Her newest work is original, so let's add talented songwriter to her resume. Although it is not as popular, there is a very difficult song titled Song for A. People will comment that it is an original song and it may be an original arrangement written for her, but the song itself is not new. I am 64 and as a child I danced to the song in international folk dance classes. It is the 1780 something poem titled the Rigs are Bonnie or the Rigs of Barley, depending upon the translation. Rigs is pronounced ridges. Originally it was a very up-tempo folk song, but her much slowed down version is breathtakingly, hauntingly, beautiful.
Thank you, Mark. This was truly inspiring and educational.
check out AGT she tells the story there .. Based on the true story of when she was six years old, Angelina met a homeless, shoeless girl. After they talked for a long time, she gave the girl her shoes and vowed never to appear on stage again wearing shoes until all the world's children had them. Since that time, Angelina has always performed barefoot in public.
This as with all her singing does her own arrangements...she is that special...even now at 15 will mesmerize you with her singing and draw out your emotions. Truly remarkable
Thank you for a very amazing reaction. This young lady was born with a gift from God to sing and the way she does it so effortlessly and gracefully with no pomp or showmanship only supports that thought. I love her and I really appreciate how you describe the technical aspects and abilities she is gifted with.
Awesome!! I think the reason Angelina doesn't wear any shoes because it gives her Freedom..She even has control of her feet also..i notice she tightens her feet & toes when she sings plus She might be a hot natured person..Tysvm & God Bless You!🌹🌹💕💕
Angelina is the barefooted Queen of Soul with a Thousand Voices! She weaves musical tapestries in all colors of the rainbow with her beguiling voice! Her musical artistry is second to none and it not something that can be taught. Soul + Music in perfect harmony!
Hi. Thanks for your reaction and opinions! I love " song for A "
I just found your channel last night and have really enjoyed your commentaries on Angelina Jordan and Dimash. Going to go listen to the rest now. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. I appreciate it very much.
It makes me smile ro see you enjoy a performance like this. You are always so positive and uplifting but to see you enjoy this makes my heart happy!!!
She is a born genius and a good role model for the younger generation I adore Angelina I could listen to her all day long she doesn't were shoes because she was on holiday in Asia and saw a young girl sat on the ground she said she was around 6yrs old the same age as her and she had to go talk to her the young girl wasn't wearing any shoes and she had scares on her feet she had no parents so she had to make money for her siblings she told Angelina she thought her shoes where pretty Angelina took them of and gave them to her she said she couldn't take them because Angelina wouldn't have any shoe Angelina told her she wanted her to have them the little girl said I will pray for you every day Angelina asked her what she wanted to be when she grows up she said I want to be a doctor she asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grows and she said I want to be a supper star and sing for everyone to make them happy she said she would never were shoes on stage again and she thinks about her every day she said she wouldn't were shoes on stage again until all the children in the world have shoes She as wrote a book on the story making her the youngest author in Norway and she's also has raised a lot of money for charity she has a heart of gold and she is very humble I adore Angelina and she's only 14 yrs old ❤️from Denise in England 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️👼🏻😘👋XX
thank you Dr. Marc, just saw this. You always add amazing insight because of your background and experience. You are the first to comment on he bare feet and what that says as far as her parenting goes. I'm glad you had fun with this and we all hope Angelina continues on her wonderful carreer.
She’s so easy-going so sweet she’s on America’s Got Talent champions her performance was stellar
I've watched a number of your reactions and this has been my favorite. You gave me a lot to think about.
Love this girl.....never disappointing!
This is my second viewing of you reacting to Angelina. Your reaction seemed unique to me. You were smiling, chuckling, and outright laughing. I love to watch people react to this one. They are usually in shock with mouth hanging open and often jumping out of their chairs, which was about my first reaction as well. I'm thinking maybe because you are a father of five and also teach children you are seeing her first as the child she is here. Then seeing her talent and dedication. In any case, I enjoyed your informative analysis and look forward to seeing more.
👩🏻🎤🎵🌎⭐️🇳🇴❤️ Angelina is incomparable.
Marc, your comment on Angelina performing without shoes is interesting. By now you have heard that the reason she doesn't wear shoes is an outcome of her meeting a girl in the middle east who was supporting her family by weighing people on a scale. It was cold and Angelina saw that her feet were scarred so Angelina responded by giving the girl her shoes. That day Angelina swore to never wear shoes while she performs until all children of the world have shoes to wear!
My bet is that when her parents heard about that poor girl there was no doubt that they would support her choice to perform barefoot.
PS. When I think of this story I am truly moved by her commitment to her vow and her generosity of spirit. What's amazing to me is that she seems to have had a deep, unshakable knowledge of herself and her art since she could start to express herself.
If I may make a request - I would love to hear your reaction to her own composition titled "Shield".
Hello again, Mark. Sorry in advance for the long, rambling comment. In my rush to share the news about Angelina’s new record label I missed the 2nd half of your reaction… and, it would seem, a very interesting half (to me). I’m an industrial-organizational psychologist and for over 20 years I’ve been working in the area of assessment for employment purposes (and to a lesser extent, development). Talents, skills, abilities, aptitudes, potential, performance and achievement - all different aspects of the same fundamental questions we struggle with every day. They apply to talents such as singing as much as they do to selecting financial analysts. Everything we do is science-based though, it being in the area of psychology and human behaviour, there is still a lot of variance in performance we don’t understand and can’t predict.
The question of nature versus nurture is pretty fundamental to much of the work we do. We look at general mental ability (the “I” word), specific abilities, personality characteristics, learning and life experience and other factors that ultimately determine how we perform in any given role or at any given task. Some elements of that equation (e.g. basic skills that can be learned, whether they be writing or accounting or understanding music theory or proper breathing technique) can be influenced relatively easily to allow us to grow and develop. Others, like the “I” word and certain specific abilities (things like verbal reasoning, basic visuospatial skills, memory etc.) are harder to fundamentally change, especially later in life. When we talk about talents, we are most likely talking about different combinations of specific abilities. It’s important to understand that no one of these aspects has predictive power that can reliably explain or predict even more than 25% of the outcome measure. I have literally had to testify as an expert before courts and tribunals on the value of things like the “I” word and specific abilities or aptitudes in assessing potential and predicting certain job outcomes. I do so confidently, because a whole bunch of empirical evidence shows that they do (if measured correctly) significantly increase our chances of guessing correctly. But they are not the whole story. Not even close.
I’m often asked about IQ and if it dooms someone to certain social or professional strata in society. My answer is always that IQ isn’t a thing inside your brain - it’s nothing more than a number that can be useful in certain calculations. The “I” word may place some constraints but so do many other things. There is no better way to whiff on your life goals than to have none, to be lazy or undisciplined, to have no learning plan or to use bad or haphazard learning methods. There is no point in worrying about things we can’t change. And no matter how much inherent ability we are born/raised with, it won’t amount to anything if we don’t apply ourselves to learn. Nobody is born with knowledge. That applies just as much to specific “talents” such as those Angelina has as it does to the “I” word.
All that to say, someone like Angelina is clearly gifted with some very special talents. When she was performing “I Who Have Nothing” as a 6 year old, we could already see that she had a natural aptitude for things like pitch, rhythm and phrasing that almost certainly rely on talents she was born with. But the idea (that runs a little rampant among some of her well-meaning fans) that it is all a natural, god-given gift and that she doesn't need to work at it isn’t just a little silly, it’s actually impossible. Because, as mentioned, we aren’t born with knowledge. There are things in music that you need to learn in order to do the things she does. She has incredible focus, and always has for someone of her age (you can see it in her Norway’s Got Talent performances). She clearly believes in hard work, and has talked about that openly. She certainly has the drive and motivation to make herself better. The story goes that she did’t like hearing that she couldn’t handle the upper registers so made it a goal of hers around 12 (I think) years of age to increase her upper range. Not long after that she knocked our socks off with Whitney’s I Have Nothing.
I will look at that book you mentioned. Despite my job requiring me to embrace both sides of the issue, I do believe strongly in the power of “nurture” (and self-learning). In the end, it isn’t really one or the other. But focusing on invariants and their limiting power is kind of pointless when we are trying to unleash human potential. I think Angelina is a perfect example of why and how both elements can come into play. Angelina isn’t as special as she is just because of her natural gifts. She’s special because of the rare combination of those gifts along with her equally powerful drive and the exceptional discipline, especially for her age, to learn her craft and continuously grow it. And while I haven’t read the book, I would be surprised if she wasn’t using some of the techniques it mentions like deliberate practice in her constant efforts to get better.
Thank you so much, David, for your expert contribution on the question of nature-nurture combination relating to performance!
A special person who is beautiful and sings awesome.
I’ve watched your other reactions to Angelina, and you’ve skipped around in your choices rather than going chronologically. There’s no wrong way to approach her catalog of songs. Although you can hear her voice develop beautifully from age 7 to 13, Angelina does not follow any regular stylistic path. I think that’s because she enjoys the challenge of tackling a style, respecting the original singer, and adding her own spin. So at 7, Angelina kills Billie Holliday songs, and then turns around and (in my opinion) flat out-sings both Nancy Sinatra and Cher on Bang, Bang. I Put a Spell on You is a one-off gem that somehow respects Screamin Jay, recreates a completely authentic period piece, and makes you wonder (as I do often) whether there is any better version out there. It’s 100% Angelina.
Since you’re moving around in Angelina’s catalog of songs, I’d suggest a style you haven’t done yet. Angelina with just an acoustic guitar backing her is a stunning experience. It shows several reasons why she’s so compelling. You hear Angelina’s soulful, resonant low register, her innate musicality in her phrasing, and best of all her ability to interpret lyrics better than anyone I’ve ever heard. I’d suggest either Stay (a Rihanna cover) or A Million Years Ago (an Adele cover) to hear Angelina’s unique voice full throttle. Something you’ll appreciate-her complete commitment to the lyrics. She makes listeners understand what the songs are all about, even though she’s a child expressing mature themes and reminiscences.
Amen to that, and when she sings Whitney Houston's "I have nothing" it is hard if it is Whitney or not!
She also wrote a book about the shoeless girl. Angelina is the youngest published author in Norway
Your are right, the average young person would never have this much discipline , Some times young people just has this talent, and like you say, the good fortune to have parents who let her be herself, by now I am sure you know the story of the shoes...good jobs
I loved seeing your reaction that feels like mine. I've seen this video well over a hundred times and still react to it about the same way. My heart and mind make my body laugh with pleasure watching her own this experience with passion.
Awesome reaction!👍🏼💕🤗
Best reaction and motivative analysis I read in last couple of years. Thank you! Very inspiring!
Angelina is my favorite vocalist by far...Could you react to Grace Vanderwaal? AGT winner 2016?
Angelina just signed a deal with Republic Records as a highest priority new artist.
It would be helpful if you cited or gave a link to this assertion as their website shows nothing
Hey Dr. Marc well said. A few words come to mind Old Soul, No Fear, Totally Relaxed, Self Expression, Raw Talent So who cares what other Jealous people think they truly don't understand or want to :) Fantastic and well thought out video thanks again.. If you teach in college your classes must be huge everyone is trying to get in :)
