People often say this song (or that one) is perfect for Angelina or they state it as did you that "this is right up in her wheelhouse". The undeniable fact is that Angelina's wheelhouse is approximately the size of Texas! One can test this by observing that across her catalog nothing is lacking, nothing is forced, or false, or insincere. Everything she decides to touch fits. No more versatile artist can one find, regardless of era or genre. Great job Britt!

Angelina has the incredible ability to perform in live concerts better than in the studio! Her album should be coming out this year, it will be great - but for me - I need to hear the songs in the live concerts that will follow - there is nothing to beat being there in person with other like minded people to fully absorb the true essence of Angelina Jordan...

Lori Lieberman's original, It became a hit with Roberta Flack's remake in 1973 and then covered by the Fugees with a massive hit. Angelina's soulful and jazzy take is based on all 3 of these singers.

According to Wikipedia the song is much earlier than Lori Lieberman's performance, Here is what they write: "The oldest known recording of the song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933, on the Vocalion label (02576).[5][16] Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley,[17] who got married around the time of the Civil War,[18] which suggests that the song could have been written years before the turn of the century. Roy Acuff, an "early-day friend and apprentice" of Clarence Ashley's, learned it from him and recorded it as "Rising Sun" on November 3, 1938."

The version of the Animals is excellent: a much more aggressive and rocky version. Angelina’s version is more soulful and bluesy and of course wonderful :-) The original is still recognizable but she really made it her own by bluesing it up.
I wonder if she is really reading and needing it or if it is simply a security branch and a nice reassurance to have at hand. I tend to believe the latter.
Angelina’s version is bit in between the original by Roberta Flack and the version of the Fugees and Lauren Hill. Yeah she takes her time singing songs. She tends to slow down songs even her own songs: her live version of Million Miles is quite a bit slower than the studio versions.
I can’t wait to see her live and experience her live singing from close up. These smartphone recordings are amazing already, to experience it from a feet away… :-D
Angelina has a very rich vocal toolbox and plays with her voice (belt, rasp, twang, headvoice and more) pauses, rhythms, tempo and freely uses it through her song to tell the story and make you feel the story. I do not get the impression that she is trying to impress us with her vocal and technical prowess.

"Killing Me Softly" gave me goosebumps. I hate comparing Angelina to anyone because she is the most unique and talented singer I have heard in my 71 years. However, Angelina is as eclectic an artist as was Roberta Flack in her day. Angelina, like Roberta, can sing in more genres of music, from all eras, from any singer, and does it so naturally. I have not heard any other singer that can do that.

“Killing Me Softly With His Song” was originally written for and recorded by Lori Lieberman in 1972.
Roberta Flack first heard the song on a flight from Los Angeles to New York City (where Lori Lieberman’s version was featured on the in-flight audio program).
In September of 1972, Roberta was opening up for Marvin Gaye at the Greek Theater. After she performed the encore song she prepared, Marvin advised her to sing another song.
    According to Roberta:
I said well, I got this song I’ve been working on called ‘Killing Me Softly’ and he [Marvin Gaye] said ‘Do it, baby’ And I did and the audience went crazy, and he walked over to me and put his arm around me and said, ‘Baby, don’t ever do that song again live until you record it.’“
Roberta’s version of “Killing Me Softly” was released in January of 1973. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in February of 1973 and later for a week in March of 1973.
She won two Grammy Awards in 1973 for “Record of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.”

What an awesome reaction Britt. I fell in love with this song when Roberta Flack (love her version) covered it in 1973. (Was originally by Lori Leiberman) than Angie did her version, so I know have 2 favorite versions of this song. It was an awesome concert in Norway back in July of 2022. You should react to her version of "Mount Everest" by Labrinth (make sure you watch his original 1st to really appreciate what she does with the song) also you just have to at the same concert react to her live in concert version of "Million Miles" (the song she wrote as a tribute to her late grandpa) this will also really blow your socks off 🤯👍❤ (PS, so happy you turned up your mic and have headphones) also on your thumb nail for this reaction you put "Mount Everest" you might want to change that. 👌

The House of the Rising Sun is an old US blues song. When the Animals covered it they were part of the British revival of US blues. Thanks to that revival many of the old negro US blues artists experienced a revival. When the Rolling Stones first came to the US, they were asked, at a news conference, "what do you want to see". Mick said they wanted to see Muddy Waters. One of the reporters replied "where is that".

House of the Rising Sun was a tiktok she did at 5am one morning that blew me away. I happened to be awake just a few minutes after and went on and saw it and felt so special because I was seeing it just a few minutes after she was on there. Funny .. like I was special!!
So here she's not doing the full song either .. I hope she does some day.
Killing Me Softly (Roberta Flack, by the way) simply makes me eager for her record to come out .. which she recently hinted was coming "soon".
I hope both of these are on the record in their full versions. I never can be "fine" with pieces of the songs because she does them so ridiculously beautifully. I JUST WANT MORE!! That all said, I do love the tiktok compilations and highly recommend them. One is 40-some minutes long and it is outrageous in the sense that we clearly see her singing EVERYWHERE .. in the streets, at the beach, the parking lot, in her bedroom .. I don't think she ever stops .. always with her cellphone stretched out in front of her and she sometimes does phenomenally beautiful versions of the songs.. I don't believe we have EVER seen a singer EVER share like this. They used to be without any instrumentation, which was gorgeous .. but then they put in piano behind them .. at first I was sorry but I quickly relaxed into it because the piano was subtle and supported her really well. I highly recommend watching these .. I believe only one reactor has taken one of these on .. and it is amazing.

The other version you probably heard was by the great Roberta Flack, a singer/pianist from the 70s who was also notable for her duets with Donny Hathaway. The original, albeit less well-known recording of the song was by Lori Lieberman and it was inspired by her attending a Don McLean set in LA. Deeply affected, she relayed her thoughts to a lyricist she had been working with, who transformed her notes into song lyrics but denied her the co-writer credit she thought she deserved.

Britt, if you want to hear another song where Angelina “takes off the chain” a bit…. try her live version of “Lovin You” done when she was 11. I think you will really like this one!
It was hearing this cover from her that cinched my belief that she may be one of the greatest jazz/RMB singers to have ever lived.
I have a link below to one where you can hear her better.

I just dropped a comment on another reaction encouraging you to go to Norway! I need to go to bed, but I'm binge watching you tonight. Roberta Flack was the best known "original", Grammy winning Thank you.

Roberta Flack was the original artist (my era, back in the 70s). I know how you like live performances, so here she is. ua-cam.com/video/YG11YNe8TSs/v-deo.html

Roberta Flak is untouchable in her rendition. Angelina may be as good. They are just different and beautiful in their own way.
