Special Thanks to my team and Nicholas Norwitz - Oxford Ketone PhD Researcher and Harvard Med Student - for working diligently on research as well!
Is Keto More Effective for Seniors?
    Big Picture Answer(s):
Keto may be more effective for seniors because they tend to be in poorer health and, therefore, have more benefits to gain. However, keto is also an excellent tool to maintain good health; so, it’s at least equally as important for younger people to adopt keto so that they can maintain their metabolic youth, despite an increasing chronological age.
    Representative Research:
    Neurodegenerative Diseases (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s)
Aging is associated with a decrease in the brain’s ability to use glucose, as measured by FDG-PET scan. This is known to contribute to the development of neurological diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease primarily strike people over the age of 65. The older you are, the more likely you are to develop the disease.
    Newport M. et al. Alzheimer’s and Dementia 2015, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
This is a case report of a 63-year-old man with Alzheimer disease. When he was put on a ketogenic diet, he exhibited a rapid improvement in mood, social ability, and memory. He also exhibited significant improvements on cognitive tests and his neurodegeneration stopped progressing.
    Vanitallie T. et al. Neurology 2005, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...
In this feasibility study, 5 patients with Parkinson’s disease - the second most common and fastest growing neurodegenerative disease in the world - were put on a ketogenic diet for one month. By the end of the month, all participants exhibited a 20-80% improvement in their symptoms, as measured by the standard clinical test of Parkinson’s disease severity (UPDRS).
    Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance is associated with age (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8...) and underpins many chronic diseases, including diabetes and obesity.
Ebbling C. et al. British Medical Journal 2018, www.bmj.com/content/bmj/363/b...
In this study, 162 people were randomly split into three groups, a high-carb group, a medium-carb group, and a low carb group. The diets of all three groups were initially isocaloric, but were calorie adjusted over the 20-week study to maintain the participants’ body weights. Not only did the research find that eating lower carb increases energy expenditure, but they found that the effect was more pronounced in those who were initially more insulin resistant. For example, among those who completed the study, those who were insulin sensitive to start burned 135 more calories if they ate low carb as compared to high carb, whereas those who were insulin resistant to start burned 478 more calories if they ate low carb as compared to high carb. In short, low carb was beneficial for everyone, but the most beneficial for those who started out as more insulin resistant, likely because they had more ground to make up (and in the general population, insulin resistance can increase with age).
    Mitochondrial dysfunction
Mosconi L. et al. Journal of Alzheimer's Disease 2011, content.iospress.com/articles...
Because elderly people will have accumulated more mitochondrial damage overtime, it’s especially important that they protect their mitochondria with a ketogenic diet. However, since mitochondria do have their own DNA and get passed directly from mother to child in the mother’s egg (the father’s sperm doesn’t donate mitochondria) the effects can be transgenerational! In the study linked above 36 cognitive normal healthy adults were compared with respect to their activity of the final complex in the electron transport chain (complex IV/COX). Complex IV/COX gets damaged in Alzheimer’s disease, so the hypothesis was that individuals with a maternal family history (MH) of Alzheimer’s disease would have a decrease in COX activity relative to individuals with no family history (NH) or a paternal family history (PH). As you can see, this is exactly what they found! These results are remarkable because they (1) follow on the well-established knowledge that mitochondrial damage accumulates with age and contributes to disease, (2) suggest that some of use may start off with slightly damaged mitochondria, so it’s important for everyone to manage mitochondrial health, and (3) suggest that the choices we make (if you’re a woman) when we are young before we have kids not only affect our health but the health of our future children!

In 79, and have been eating Keto since 1/20/2016, nearly 4 years. I did this because my kidneys were failing due to a virus at age 17. I’ve never smoked and never started drinking because of my gradually dropping kidney function. Within 4 months I had lost all extra lbs, and raised my GFR by 40 points. I have experimented with all sorts of “must do’s”. I have raised my protein about 30 percent since I saw I was losing some muscle, and overall I’m much healthier!

@dawnnie 7678 Yep, me too. Mom was a child of the depression (I was born in 1958), so she had the crazy-making combo of “Eat everything on your plate” plus “Don’t get fat.” She made sure I got that combo too. ☹️ I tried keto diet a year ago, and only lost the water weight from reduced carbs, and I felt like crap, probably from not enough potassium & water, so I gave up. I wasn’t brave enough to consider fasting then. How are you doing, 4 months since you posted this?

I've fasted my entire life. I have been seriously on keto for three weeks now. In ketosis. Loving it! I have zero hunger from nine o'clock pm until around four pm. I drink two cups of coffee throughout the day. Nothing touches these lips. The thought of eating makes me nauseous. I always knew it was good for me even when people slammed me for it. It makes keto so SO easy. I love this lifestyle

After trial and error I've finally found how I love liver. Marinate it in generous lemon juice, mustard, knorr powder and other dry spices. Fry it in bacon fat. Eat it with a side you enjoy or by itself. I like it with tomatoes and green beans. Have a couple slices of bacon as a treat on your plate. I've been religiously eating it every week this way, very easy to consume. I use calf liver.

Wow. Thank you! I've been "sort of" on Keto ever since I hit 'retirement age' (I can't retire however) and it's been over 3 years now. My objective has been to improve mental clarity and general health to successfully keep up with my gig economy workload. I say "sort of" because my primary guide is listening to how my body reacts day-to-day, hour-to-hour to what I'm eating and otherwise doing.
Your points about Vitamin A, exercise, increased protein, Vitamin D, and the hours for IF programs are absolutely in line with what my body's been telling me!
I'm not living in the US, and I've found I don't do well with supplements (too concentrated, irritate my digestive system, high rebound if I later stop), but daily deep orange winter squash salad and getting outside in the sun do help. I did find a personal trainer at my local gym who understood what I want to do (avoid becoming frail, build up stamina), and could set up flexible menus of HIIT with weight machines that have been very beneficial.
P.S. I was taken to a top restaurant and ordered beef liver, just to see what they would do to it - they sauteed it lightly with onion and apple slices. It may not make the strict Keto diet because of the cooked apple, but it did improve the taste greatly.

I am 62 years old. My knees are shot due to weight gain and unbeknownst to me, slight femur deformation. I had steroid shots given directly to my knees. I had night sweats and fever. I don't want to do that again. Then I saw one of Thomas' vids and it made so much sense. I literally went through carb withdrawals with migraine and feeling horrible. I know my body was double-reacting to the steroids and carb withdrawal. In 3 days I have dropped 6 lbs and I feel so good. I need to lose about 30 more pounds but with Thomas' great videos I am feeling hope. Was truly feeling at the bottom due to knee pain, fatigue and general lack of strength. Thank you, Thomas! When you suggest having fish "everyday" - and also advocate different types of protein for good gut health - this presents a conundrum for me. When I'm in ketosis, I am almost never hungry. I have to make myself eat one meal a day. If I had fish "everyday" then I'd have *only* fish - which would be bad for my gut health.

Thanks Thomas. I'm 56, and in great shape. I've been following you and Dr. Berg for a couple of years. But not for Keto. After losing 40 lbs. on my version of Atkins I started with you for Keto, and slowly regained 10 lbs and saw blood in my urine, so, I quit keto. I'm a doctoral student, so, you know that I've been very thorough on my research of Keto. But it just doesn't seem to work for me. So, I follow you now for all of the other things you talk about -like this. And I am grateful because my family history is loaded with high cholesterol and diabetes. Not only have you helped me to improve my health, but you've saved me money on supplements. But I still don't understand why Keto didn't work for me, nor why I saw blood in my urine (which went away when I quit Keto).

    • @MrMarcriv80

Kidney stones can result in blood being present in the urine. High protein could have been the culprit.

    • @EricDeRise
      @EricDeRise 4 роки тому

@@MrMarcriv80 Thanks. I know that. But the problem is that the blood showed up after 3 months of keto. And it stopped when I stopped keto. So it may have developed due to high protein diet but why did it take 3 months of keto to bring the blood into the urine and why did it stop when I quit keto? In fact I've been back on my high protein diet for over a year now and still have not seen blood in my urine return.

Bravo Thomas, Most everything that I see on UA-cam about keto is usually talking to young people or middle-aged people and that's fine. But don't forget about us old guys. You really had a lot of good useful information, I like it that you basically preach the omnivore diet in a ketogenic form I do believe that we are not carnivores and we are not herbivores, millions of years of evolution have brought us to this point by being omnivores. I also wanted to mention that I'm going to Start using the Thrive Market one of your sponsors. Keep up the good work. You are fast becoming my favorite keto UA-cam coach. I'm 75 years old, male, Run my own video production business, And I'm going to play racquetball this morning.

71/disabled Vet with mobility issues and a lifetime of being overweight. Constant pain (22+ surgeries) fused lumbar and left leg. Started keto 10/01/21 and have had lost 30 lds so far (233lds start now around 200) with a goal of 165ld for optimum health. I struggle on occasion and hunger is always taunting me to cheat. I stay the course and push through. In fact I have a coffee mug with just those words on it that I use for my green tea. My best advise. The alternative is pain...sadness and death. I chose happiness and life. That helps keep me focused and on track. Be patient. It takes time..so did getting fat.

I'm 67, and not a day goes by that I don't intermittent fast for at least 18 hours, while basically eating OMAD, including plenty of good fats & protein. Also, I've experimented with all kinds of fasts, from 21-day to 5-day. Currently, in addition to my 18-hour intermittent fast every day, I'm also doing a 36-hour dry fast twice per week. I've been mostly on keto for a year now, but from late May until mid-September I experimented with just eating carnivore for 3 & 1/2 months. About 2 weeks ago I started reintroducing low-carb vegetables back into my diet. My BMI is about 20.4, and I plan on returning to lifting moderately heavy weights, hopefully by January 2020.
Probably not the eating regimen & fasting schedule that Thomas would prescribe for me, but I feel pretty great !

This is very helpful info. I have been KETO for nearly 4 years and it has been an amazing healing tool for me. I have decreased my husband's carb intake but he still doesn't think "there is anything wrong with him eating refined carbs because he's on the slender side." As he is aging, his glucose numbers are going up and so I am hoping that seeing this will help to convince him that "you are what you eat". Thanks for always great advice!

Marcie, take it easy, you have to pass a period of transition,so bon't do it so sudenly, give to your body, special to your brain,a perood of accomodation with this new statement,to have succes and to be able to do it constantely in the your life.As women you have to take it easy,to give time to your hormonal sistem to adapt ,and to switch, the regulation of you by hormones, step by step.Aniway,to reduce, sugar, rafined sugar, and frised cook,in oil,are verry important, the adaptation may take about 1 or 2 month, until your body learn to make it's own glucose, from your body fat,and during this time you will become insulin sensitiv. These are first steps to have succes. Many people faild into this keto, because they think that it is so simple to swich your behaviouros brain, and body sudenly. They renounce, early becouse is dificult to face it,if theyr's body isn't adapted with this.Take in consideration that 90% of modern people, have became, adictive to sugar,by the brain. Not your body need sweeties, but your brain is adictive to it.Take it slowely, reduce your, sugar, bread, junk food, frised, than replace them with legummies, vegies, you will see how the veggies are so sweet, but in comparation to cookies, candies, etc.of course now they seems to be less.Boiled or steam, the meat, eggs, some rice, some potatoes, the cuantity of them is important, anny excces becom a problem. From fruits chose berries.Take your electrolites,do some cardio,or beter, strenght training, awaile, after 4-5 months may chose HIIT training, depends on your fittness condition, but for the begening, the key is adaptation...it is about insulin resistance, about your liver condition, hearth, bones, organs, level of hormones, and special your brain. Be smart, patient, and determinated. For to bigining fast a today,no fast tomorrow, fast the day after tomorrow, and so on.Listen your body, and don't be in panic, with some signs, your body will adapt to it. The title says "Over Age 50" and yet the video spends a significant amount of time on those "Over 60". This is slightly confusing and misleading to me as ten years makes a big difference in physiology. I just turned 50 and don't see that as being 'elderly' or 'geriatric'. Maybe you should do a separate video for the "over 60" crowd and/or re-do this video specifically for those actually in their 50s. Great information, though. Thanks!

So glad I found this channel. I am 62 and really needed guidance on Keto. I prefer to watch these shows than reading books that have pages of "filler" and not very informative ... I have added fasting into my plan ... WHAT a huge difference. I have had joint pain (unknown origin which is typical at our age lol) in my right elbow. It is almost gone...and yes I have increased my water consumption to 80 oz a day.
I would like there to be more clarification on this guide. Specifically, the title is Keto over 50 but it interchanges between over 50 and over 60. Instructions for over 60 are very different than over 50. So I would like in a future video that it be clarified.
