I'm 52 and work the night shift. I usually don't eat after 1AM and after my shift I come home and go to bed without eating so I usually go about 15 hours before eating again. Is this still messing with my weight loss since I'm on a different schedule. I only work 2-3 12 hour shifts a week. Other days I'm on a day schedule. What are your thoughts.

Make your own salad dressing! It's easy and better than anything you can buy in any store.
1 cup mayonnaise, preferably avocado oil mayonnaise
    1/2 cup sour cream
    1 small garlic clove, grated
    1 Tbsp chives
    1 Tbsp dried parsley
    2 tsp dried dill
1 tsp salt (I use light grey Celtic sea salt)
    1/4 cup white vinegar
a few shakes of Worcestershire sauce
Mix well and refrigerate at least one hour before using.

I'm 60 and I lost weight by stopping snacking completely. 77 lbs so far in the last 13 months. It's not just the calories but the fact that carbs spike insulin, so this evil fat storing hormone is always around if you keep snacking. Wasn't easy at all but had to be done, and now it's become normal for me, whereas previously "normal" was late night snacking and grazing and having alcohol some nights (cut that out too). I had no idea at the time that the alcohol was making the situation far worse, and that when you have alcohol in your system your body will not burn off what you've consumed, until all that alcohol is removed. Can be pretty annoying when you see some people literally eating and drinking what they want ( my husband is one) and never put weight on, but you have to just get over that and accept that everyone is different, or you'll never get anywhere. It is what it is.

I am 76 and lost 34 pounds in four months doing strict keto and 20/4 fasting. At 5’1” losing that much was a real challenge but I want to share my experience to let you all know it really can be done😊. Now the challenge will be to keep it off. I love the day off idea! Perfect for when the family comes for thanksgiving and Christmas. Thank you Dr Gillaspy!

I'm senior too and after ever-increasingly struggling with weight my whole life, I finally found out that carbs/sugar is the absolute enemy of a healthy metabolism. So far i've lost 40kg/88lbs and eat only animal fat and protein, as much as i want to achieve full satiety, no hunger whatsoever and have full confidence i will easily lose the remaining 25kg. The only minor difficult part is in the short term transition from a carb based energy source to convert the body back to a fat based diet. Fat is not the enemy is has been purported to be.

I'm very tall, 65 years old (now) and weighed 330 lbs when I decided to loose weight and get back to 280 lbs. I did a strict keto and OMAD regimen for 3ish months and lost the weight. I then remained "dirty" keto now for almost 3 years and am down to 260 and feel great. I do eat these keto sweets now and can still maintain my weight. I don't believe I could have lost all my weight eating the keto sweets. It is still so easy to overeat them just like regular sweets. Thank you Dr Becky for all you do.

Don't include packaged dressings. Make your own. I make mine from 2 teaspoons of olive oil and 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. Then mix and stir together. As easy as that.
You can also use either a whole lemon squeezed or a whole orange squeezed- mix in a amount of natural yogurt / not sugary yogurt. This will make a mayonnaise. Just 2 ingredients and all natural.

You do not need to restrict calories.. I eat animal protein and fat with less than 10gms of carbs per day, most of that being carbs in the cream in my coffee (as cream has 10 times the fat and way less carbs than milk). I eat as much as i want and never feel hungry and yet have lost 88lb and at age 59, for the first time in my life i know the last 40lbs will be a breeze.

Just FYI in case you hadn't realized it yet.. I switched to cream, no milk because, cream has 10 x the fat and 1/2 of the carbs of whole milk.. carbs is the enemy, especially at night. You want your early morning blood sugar level low to minimize insulin levels, which is the light switch to allow the body to draw fat from reserves.

Like her style. Calm and rational with no hipe and over the top promises for results. I'm 73 and I gained weight after quitting smoking, I soothed myself with crackers, and cookies, ice cream. I'd never been an eater of any of those foods and wow what a mistake. I did quit but I had done some major damage to my body with all of that insulin. And the belly fat is and outward example of that out of control event. For all of you older people out there you are doing major harm to every organ of you body when you kid yourself about refine foods. Many people die in their 60's and 70's from ailment they think have nothing to do with insulin but they do. If you end up with diabetes your may not die of diabetes directly but kidney and liver failure and heart attacks are all from sugary foods. Even your loss of memory and dementia are licked to sugar. Stop playing around. It makes me laugh when I see people eating pure junk and tell their begging dog they can't have any because it's not good for them. WHAT? are you kidding, somehow the human body can eat that horrible food but the dog can't.

Some might think it's wasteful but I don't want to make them at home where I'd be tempted and they sell them super large in the stores/bakeries.

It is SO EASY to make: olive oil, apple cider vinegar or fresh lemon juice, salt & pepper, and whatever choice of spices and herbs one wants. It doesn't get easier than that. If I want a creamy dressing, I add a bit of tahini. I haven't purchased salad dressing since.

Dr. Becky, I’m so blessed to have stumbled upon your site on Nov.9/2018! Have continued to follow this low-carb lifestyle and have directed those in my inner circle to seek out your site. I also watched your “2FitDocs” site, sharing it with my husband in hopes he would jump aboard with me, which he did, but only after experiencing a health scare in Dec.2020. He went strict keto for 6 months, losing 40 lbs, and all of his bloodwork indicated such improvement that his skeptical GP simply looked at me and said “keep doing what you’re doing”. This being said, fast forward to now, and I struggle to keep his “favourite” carbs out of the house. He uses the “hospitality” excuse a lot, and when I try to re-explain the science, his body language lets me know he’s not appreciating the “Police-work”. He does, however, speak freely to others when asked how he has lost the weight and looks so healthy. He continues to have bloodwork and tests for his chronic condition (s), and over the past number of months, these test indicate he’s heading back in the wrong direction, yet seems quite okay with it, while I’m sickened inside. He is not receptive to any association I make to his returning to his old ways. I’m at the point where I feel I have invested enough in his health and if he doesn’t want to work at it as hard as I have for him, then I need to do what I did for the first 2 years, back when I was experimenting just on my own body.
Any advice? Or should I just prepare myself for widowhood to happen much sooner than it should?

For me, i know myself real well. I know I cannot have a cheat day … period. If I take a free day like you referred to it would be a slippery slope for me right back to eating the way I was 5 plus years ago. I am a carb addict. For a carb addict to have a free day like you describe, in my opinion, it is equivalent to telling an alcoholic that he only needs to be sober for 40 days then he can have a day where he can drink as much as he likes. I would never say that to an alcoholic, nor do I believe you should be saying this to people who have a carb addiction.

Wow, a little harsh don't you think? If it doesn't work for you to do a cheat day, than skip it...I would never tell someone who offers free advice with ample experience and tips to not say something that may work for the majority. Sometimes a reward for staying "on plan" for 40 days may make it more successful. According to you one slip up will destroy further success?

Dr Becky, I know this video is a year old but I have been binge watching some of your older videos. I was just wondering about protein shakes. I see what you are saying about the cookie and the broccoli and how the cookie breaks down and goes straight into your blood stream. If a protein shake only has 3 Total carbs, would it still do the same as the cookie? Not sure if you will read this question but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks for what you do.

Thanks for all of your videos. They have been very helpful. I'm 61 years old and used to weigh 275 lbs. Via a low carb diet and eating within an 8 hour window each day, I'm down to 200 lbs. Where I'm looking for a suggestion is that my Dr. has given me an Rx that he'd like me to take first thing in the morning *with food*, which would be about 6am for me. I normally don't eat till about 11am. What can I eat in small quantity that early that would upset my intermittent fasting too much?

With a 99% bio-availability to our bodies, eggs are perfect. I'm 59, almost 60 and similar to you have lost 88lbs... i eat less than 10gms of carbs/day. In the morning i make an egg-flip with three to four eggs + 100mls of cream + 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla essense = 57gms of fat + 28gms of protein + 2gms x carbs. i have a fairly physical job (diesel mechanic), In the afternoon when i've finished work i usually eat 1.75lbs of fatty meat, usually lamb or beef. Don't fear animal fat, our metabolism return to normal once carbs are reduced to near zero and replaced with healthy fats, i know it's difficult to believe but, we've been lied to our whole lives by self-interest groups. Fat will bring satiety, with no hunger pangs.

Keto can be a diet for weight loss but it's also a "diet" in the sense of what's best to eat for optimal health. I lost weight on keto, so I have no need to be in a perpetual weight loss mode. When my clothes still fit the same, I don't sweat it if I've gained a few lbs because it's most likely muscle weight. So for me, keto is no longer a diet for weight loss but a life style in order not to need to lose weight.

I've always been suspicious of bottled salad dressings, so a couple of years ago I simply began making my own from scratch. Now it's pretty much the only way I can have it added to my salads. When I'm having a salad in a restaurant, I just ask for oil & vinegar. I don't trust their mixed dressings at all.

just a thought, one youtube specialist says it requires about 2 hr 45 minutes to digest food. If so, it would make sense to enjoy 2 meals 3 hrs apart and enjoy the "snack" at the conclusion of either meal.....AND walk away until the next day. your feedback is welcome.

It's so easy to splash some olive oil and vinegar on your salad. If you like Italian dressing, add some oregano and basil flakes. Make your own Thousand Island with mayo you made fresh, sugar-free catsup, and a spoonful of dill relish. I was going to get a jar of mayo in Walmart yesterday til I saw it was nearly $15. Walmart, you have lost your mind. Mayo is egg yolks, olive oil, and vinegar. One egg yolk, a tbsp of vinegar or lemon juice, 1cup olive oil, a pinch of salt. Homemade mayo. You can add a tbsp of your favorite mustard, you can customize it any way you want. Good for a week in the fridge.
