Since you blacked out the other chrome, I would go with the black grille. Just matches better.

Pete, you can sand those inner tail lights with 600 grit and clear with a 2k clear. Should take you less than 1-2hr and It’ll look brand new.
Nice to see the facelift grills on the car. as far as the key goes I got mine cut by a guy on ebay. I just had to send him a picture of my key and it actually worked. after that I was able to program it to my e39 by myself using an AK90 programmer.
Lucky you caught the bracket for the rear bumper. I changed my diffuser on my e46 a while back and broke the bracket. Didn't get a replacement and then lost the diffuser going down a back road at night never to be seen again.

Definitely the inserts with the chrome as it blends in with the chrome on the bmw badge! Also in my opinion I think the m5 badge on the back would look killer as well! Great video again it’s refreshing to see things getting fixed properly 👌

Our you could do LED switchbacks on the turn signals. I have those in my car so they are white when running but amber when indicating.

Having re-wired the DRLs on my Impreza into the fog lights I appreciate being able to run them with the parking lights. And it creates a cool yellow fog look during all the time as well.
Maybe pull the cord off your hoodie before it gets caught on a pully or belt 👍

Glad it was not truly “broken”...it’s an awesome looking Wagon...I prefer the Black kidney grills over the chrome ones. IMHO the style 65 rims look best...and it needs the M5 badge it adds 7hp.
We got our key coded with a super cheap tool we found on Amazon called AK90+. Really easy to do. Key cutting was done at our local locksmith.
On facelift E39's, the parking light is off when the full lights are on and only omit when the indicators are on. You should look into getting the harness or coding the parking lamps off.

Nice videos!!! Regarding the key, you don't need to re-code it. Just take apart the old one and there should be a tiny little chip (it looks like a black tiny- 3mm or so- squared piece)stuck to the plastic cover (i think in the front part of the key fob where the metal rod meets the plastic). That chip is the one that sends the signal to the steering column that you have the "proper" key and lets the engine crank.
You can code the keys your self after you’ve had them cut there’s a few forum posts on it about specifically getting the updated keys. We did it for my buddy’s e38 pretty easy process

Your lights are perfect, the whiter light tone looks more modern and the chrome bezel kidney grills look much better than the black ones.
I like the chrome grille better with the lights, however the black matches the other trim you blacked out

I would have said stay chrome but the back actually looks really good, it pulls the whole front end look together.

The keys are old EWS2 and new one are EWS3. You can programme them at house ,you just need AK90+ box, and some key cut shop.
I have mine done with Aliexspress keys, and used replacement ews3 module (old give me no crank) and still working. 😂💪💪
How about painting the black kidney grilles to match the blue paint. When that looks crap - you can put the chrome ones back in.
On a lighter note - your 'Process of elimination' for the temp issue really means 'unloading the parts cannon first'. Even the mightly Lexus has issues sometimes. You maybe happy to know that the thermostat on my own LS430 recently failed too so they're not impervious either...though I didn't change out half the engine components trying to diagnose it :)

You can get the key cut, but you will need to program it. There is a tool you can buy online that will copy the programming of one key to another, and once that is done you will need to pair it to the car. That's how it works on the E46 at least, so I'd assume it's the same on the E39

I've said it before but what an amazing build. I personally prefer the warmer lights, but at the end of the day it's your car!
Had this same issue/error on my E46 M3. Ended up being the thermostat; failed wide open. Pretty easy fix.
Yes to the M5 emblem. Also should line up the bottom of BMW emblems with valve stems on the wheels ;)

for key coding (if you still have immo) you need tool called "AK90". Pairing the remote is simple as turning ignition and touching button 3 times. For key cut search locally :)
I have an autel maxisys ms906BT, it can be used to program keys, I haven’t tried it myself but it’s one of the features. I live off Grays RD not too far from your shop. You guys can borrow it to program the BMW key
Try the OEM post facelift chrome kidney grills. I think they will definitely grow on you. And if I were you I’d want to wear that M5 badge proudly especially because it’s a wagon. Great build and I am looking forward to more!!😁
Very nice build. I could be wrong but that age BMWs came with oil caps that have Castrol written on them.

You can remove the EWS and get an AK90 to code the key yourself. I bought a pre-cut key and coded it and works fine
I would get two S54 engine oil caps, think that would look great on this engine :D also how bout gloss black kidneys
Make sure you have the o-ring on the cap for the power steering
Did this on my e39 m5 was a total pita, while you changed both of those you should go ahead and change the oil level sensor too
Look into the AK90+ key thing. You can find it on Amazon and do it yourself. Very easy.

You can use an autel maxisystem or snap on Zeus to key code if you can get one and have the original key not sure if there’s anything else you can use

The cap of the steering fluid reservoir has an o-ring type seal or gasket, which is sealing the cap to the reservoir and that is leaking all the time. Changing them on my BMWs solved the problem always.
I know you were maybe being sarcastic about it never breaking down on you, but these really are great road trip machines. Everything is so over engineered that you have plenty of warning before a part truly fails to the point of leaving you stranded. I took my 190k mile M5 all across the country and it loved it
Quick word of advice, if the changes you did don't stop the power steering leak, there is a o-ring gasket that goes under the power steering reservoir cap that needs to be replaced to stop the power steering fluid from seeping out.

Love the wheels, also please do the m5 badge. It finishes the look! Its obvious the car has been swapped you have the body kit, BBk and everything else.
I still remember servicing this old SC300, came into the shop misfiring and running like shit. It had close to 200K miles on it. Turns out the owner just never replaced the valve cover gasket and oil was filling up the spark plug holes. New gasket, new plugs the car runs perfect. Just hilarious how it contrasts to a similar situation with a new BMW that I serviced where it had a misfire, looked to be a coil, so we thought to swap coils from one cylinder to another just to do a quick check... oh BMW put a different connector on each coil? Thanks... turned out to be the coil anyways and it wasn't cheap, lol.
Get the chrome facelift grills, the bulky shape of the outline just says "Yesss this is an M5"💪

Chrome grills where fine when you had the chrome accents on the windows but since you've blacked those out then it makes sense to black out the grills too :)
