I was on the zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco when one of the P42s gave up the ghost. I assumed that since we were heading into the mountains toward Denver that one loco didn't have enough umph to get us up the mountains. So we waited until a BNSF loco showed up, So we got into Denver many hours late. In Denver they added another P42 but we kept the BNSF. The conductor told me the freight loco was limited to 65 mph so we simply got further behind schedule and arrived in Emeryville 12 hours late.
Have anyone recorded a CA Zhyper helped by an UP locomotive like this?? SW Chief is running at BNSF tracks, that's why BNSF sent a help for Amtrak; CA Zhyper is almost running at UP tracks, there may have same cases happened before.....I guess.

Amazing that the guy doesn't understand the simple business concept of borrowing a locomotive when needed. They already have these items in written agreements. The BNSF is compensated financially for the unit when borrowed - NOT leased. Guaranteed the Amtrak engineer knows how to run that BNSF unit and the BNSF engineer is NOT Amtrak qualified.
You do know all they do is have BNSF employees hook up a loco and drive at passenger speed, right? With specific orders, and with Amtrak crew still in the P40's and P42's.
+Ashura The hedgehog: Unfortunately, you have no concept of what truly happens here. The BNSF unit is 'geared' for 70 mph and therefore cannot run at passenger speeds. The Amtrak crew is NOT setting back there in the Amtrak unit, their butts are in the seats of that BNSF unit.
Centerbeam flatcars carries wood packed covering in white foil, boxcars carries goods and other tiny stuff, coal and phosphate cars carries coal, phosphate, and other rocks and minerals, tankers carries famible goodies, oil, crude oil, and other liquids, autoracks carries cars.
I saw a Citirail locomotive on the CSX line in St Matthews, Ky several months ago. It was in the middle of a consist with CSX locos hauling autoracks away from the Ford plant in Louisville.
Now what is the benefit to BNSF or any other railroad, for that matter, of pulling an Amtrak train. Is it just leasing costs for the run? I would see goodwill if Amtrak ever helped out a freight, but that never happens. All i see Amtrak doing is messing with the freight dispatchers, taking up space, and wear and tear on rails and signals. Insight appreciated.
Amtrak doesn't own all of the rail like they do on the east coast. Bush has to pull them on their track when their locos break down. They are on lease to use the track, but they don't own it
It’s not rare to see a BNSF locomotive or any freight locomotive for that matter hauling an Amtrak train, the P42s are old and tired. They tend to break down therefor requiring helpers
Perhaps it's time for new locomotives. Perhaps, instead of getting brand-new designs, they should turn to EMD, GE, Brookville, and MPI. For example: EMD can provide SD70ACe locomotives with HEP units, and likewise, GE can provide GEVOs in the same manner. Brookville has the BL20GH, which can serve on the corridor services, alongside the MPI MP36-3C, also suitable for corridor and medium-haul trains. Also suitable for Amtrak service are the HSP46 and BL36PH. All of these locomotives not only are proven designs, they're low-emission, most of them meeting EPA Tier 2 standards.

+WorldTrains98 - It's a private company, a subsidiary of Citibank actually, that buys locomotives for the sole purpose of leasing them to the BNSF.
