Blink-182's Mark Hoppus tells us the story behind the huge single 'The Rock Show', taken from the album 'Take Off Your Pants And Jacket'. #blink182 #markhoppus #poppunk
Frank Sinatra recorded “That’s Life” in the same exact way. Producer Jimmy Bowen thought the first take was “too bubbly”, so Frank aggressively sang the song and it’s quite brilliant
And blink would not have released their self-titled album with as much success. The momentum would not be there. Yeah, they still would have Stay Together, but that’s the Adam’s Song of that album (rock show and first date were the What’s my age again and All the small peepees of TOYPAJ)
@@arthurfisher1857 they were written as jokes because the label didn’t think they had enough off their old pop punk songs. They were told to go home and write something “more radio friendly” so Tom went home and wrote first date and mark wrote rock show. Everytime I look for you and roller coaster are just as catchy and if not better songs imo, mark has said all of this in interviews and his live streams himself .
I started back when Dude Ranch came out. So DR is my favorite album. But Enema and TOYPAJ where pretty decent. After that I really stopped paying attention.
Dammit and prolly all the small thing drew me in early before I really knew who they were then let’s see maybe 13 year old me watched the video for 1st date not realizing it was a parody, and I wrote them off for a while, thinking they had some weird Bee Gees fetish or something lmfao. Then I met my buddy showed me a few albums later that year when I got my first bass; and the rest was history.
It’s very interesting how important their manager was to their success. This album should have kept all 3 bonus tracks and scratched some of the fillers. Listen to hold on and time to break up. Easily could have been singles on the album too.
@@deanb.2706 Nah Roller Coaster was a winner, but I agree about Shut Up. Give Me One Good Reason is another filler, they're probably the two I'd drop and replace with Hold On (DTMTIO) and What Went Wrong.
Blink always says they don't like their happy songs. All the Small Things, The Rock Show, First Date. These are songs I love the most from Blink. I love some songs like I Miss You, but I prefer to be happy
That's fascinating. My friend and I would discuss how those songs don't exactly fit with the rest of the record. We also would say that the best of blink and where the brilliance lies is in non singles. The singles are great don't get me wrong but the other album tracks are excellent.
Funny I never really thought about it but if you take off First Date and Rock Show (okay and Happy Holidays which is a throwaway), that album suddenly looks kinda dark
2 of their biggest songs made in spite 🤣 these guys will always hold a special place in my heart, having been in my mid teens when all them cds were coming out
This makes so much sense take those songs off the album and it feels like a mix between dude ranch box car racer and a little bit of pre self titled vibes
The Rock Show was on a Now That's What I Call Music compilation that my cousin owned. I listened to it on repeat the whole weekend and drove him insane, but have been listening ever since.
I'm now 35 and struggled with drug abuse I've lost so many people to drugs from my younger days starting out with a smoke to ect ect I'm now a mother of two but I've never looked down on the people on the hard drugs as i could of easily ended up that way. Would be brilliant if you could make a song for all the lost party animals. Wherear it be overdose or heart attack. Respect and loyaty is priceless xx
Saw a video of Mark saying that Tom called him at Like 3am on a random night saying he was watching beegee music videos laughing his ass off and wanted to recreate that.
It's kind of ironic how The Rock Show and First Date were written as almost jokes in spite of their manager, but they went on to be the biggest songs off that album. It kind of proved the manager right lol
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they only the biggest because they were decided by the band to be just that: the singles with the music video on MTV? Any song off the album could've been the biggest had the band decided to hype it up as a single.
@@HomoErectusOnUranus Well that's what happens with any band really. That's why "Greatest Hits" albums aren't actually fan favourites, but more a compilation of singles that made the most money. If greatest hits were fan favourites, then Dumpweed would've been on Blink's greatest hits for sure
financially, yes. manager was right. but that’s the trade-off: were the band satisfied artistically? it’s not all about the $$$ most of the time, we just want to create something beautiful. catch-22: it’s harder to create works of art if you don’t have the means to pull it off. materials and time cost money. it’s our paradox.
@HomoErectusOnUranus not entirely true. The album is my favorite they've done, but not many songs on that album had "single" type sounds. You can hear a certain vibe in singles vs the rest of most albums.
I see a lot of comments saying, "good thing the manager said something or we wouldn't have these two great hits" A lot of you don't realize they pick what the singles are and wanted those two to attract but I do believe if they picked another two it would have been same. Also remember that stay together for the kids was one of those singles-
Thanks for the insight... I think all the "art" you're talking about definitely hits on the next album on the track "All of This " with R.Smith. top notch
@@BeardnScars I guess the story goes... they almost had to ditch the song bcuz they had sent Smith the music to lay down the lyric audio... It came back with like one day left b4 they wuda had to dump the song .. THANK GOD IT ARRIVED IN TIME AND WAZNT ON TOM HANKS PLANE FROM CASTAWAY... 😉 LOL..
@@ryanejhinger5331 lol I bet there are songs these dudes have lost due to the time management, tho. I mean they seem responsible but they’re also older now. I doubt they were this business like when they were young
are u guys being fr?? i've listened to the album a lot and listened to a lot of post-hardcore/post-punk, but still didnt hear any hint of it in the album. hell box car racer is heavier somehow
That makes sense, because the first time I heard these two songs I felt like it was being shoved down our throats. I even felt insulted, but I love Blink and somehow didn’t hold it against them. I eventually liked the songs because they became part of the soundtrack of life, but they don’t have that magic that their previous records had.
What I done understand is that they said they wanted a harder, post punk album. Yet their other songs like roller coaster, story of a lonely guy, every time I look for you, online songs etc.. are completely different to that and are as pop punky as the rock show and first date?
I'd like to know who organised Blink's style of look, Dude Ranch punk rock kids just them selves, enema with Hurley clothing and full of colour, Take Off Your Pants with black clothing, Self titled different again with Atticus and Macbeth
Their manager is like …”you’re welcome”
In other words 😂😂
Frank Sinatra recorded “That’s Life” in the same exact way. Producer Jimmy Bowen thought the first take was “too bubbly”, so Frank aggressively sang the song and it’s quite brilliant
PLANNED
And their bank accounts
get a job
Then our manager kicked me in the nuts and “Feeling This” was born
Lmfao
Holy fuvk 😅💀
Sounds like some total blink shit too 😂😂
Amazing how if their manager didn't say anything we wouldn't have two of their most popular songs
And blink would not have released their self-titled album with as much success. The momentum would not be there. Yeah, they still would have Stay Together, but that’s the Adam’s Song of that album (rock show and first date were the What’s my age again and All the small peepees of TOYPAJ)
@@bulletprooftiger1879they still have online songs, reckless abandon, roller coaster, and give me one good reason
They are popular because they were their singles, whatever two songs they decided to put out would have been just as popular
@@FatherBeforeMeNot true. Those ones were particularly catchy and radio friendly. There's a reason they were chosen as singles.

Now that’s a damn good manager to help inspire two of my favorite blink songs ever
Definitely one of the songs that got me into blink 182!
Saw them at Lolla in 2017 and knew maybe 3 songs. This is the one that stuck with me when I went home that night and made me the fan I am today.

I love that this generation gets to finally catch up with this awesome, one of a kind band!

They could’ve omitted shut up and roller coaster and put what what went wrong, time to break up, and hold on
every song on this album is incredible
@@deanb.2706 Nah Roller Coaster was a winner, but I agree about Shut Up. Give Me One Good Reason is another filler, they're probably the two I'd drop and replace with Hold On (DTMTIO) and What Went Wrong.
What Went Wrong is my favorite Blink song; although it’s an acoustic Tom track
Lol I'm not sure but if theyre talking about Rick Devoe hes also a big part of them breaking up.
Best blink album of all time by far
unpopular opinion but its facts.. TOYPAJ is their best & most complete album.
“Stay Together for the Kids” was the best song on that album
I like how he avoided saying “I went home and tried to write the dumbest song I could think of.”
2 EPIC songs. Soo nostalgic and very close to my heart!!

Me neither, kinda weird though
Yeah I never noticed this either, had to go look at the song list and he's not wrong 😅
Idk, it still kinda has that major scale pop punk vibe to me
It’s Enema 2.0 without those songs even,.. he is describing this as tho it was self titled recording sessions
@@billeinstein5569 they had to write more pop songs and scrap some stuff.
anger! emotion! that’s how you make music!

Boy that manager sure knew what the fuck he was talking about huh
And that my friends is the music business encapsulated

So glad I was going through high school when these albums came out 👌🏻the best
I always KNEW that First Date and Rock Show were not only satirical in nature, but connected in meaning as well
You know it's funny cause I always thought that song seemed kind of tongue in cheek. It all makes sense now 😄
Love how the rock show is so fittingly mark and first date Tom but together perfectly blink 182
