Offspring isnt punk stupid, it's pop, bubblegum pop to you.
Props for 90s so cal recognition! Oddly, I liked Blink first then discovered Lagwagon and Descendents then Bad Religion. Before them I knew about Vandals and Black Flag but didnt like them quite as much as Minor threat and Bad Brains. Now blink is out of rotation, Lagwagon, Descendents and Bad Religion remain absolutely love them. Offspring was for me a bit of a sideshow, somewhere between vandals and at the time sublime.
NO! Rise and fall rage and grace is hands down the best album
I am so not a Green Day fan: REAL punk rockers don’t have friggin’ BROADWAY MUSICALS about themselves.
ST and Ignition are their best ones this far, I also like Co1 and Let The Bad Times Roll. Unfortunately many of their albums have too many slow songs. While taking artistic liberties is alright it doesn't always work.
Some of their slower songs (Dirty Magic, and Gone Away are two examples) are good but most of them are "meh". You got to give them props for doing what they feel like, to me that's what make them punkish.
I remember a skater kid in 7th grade lording the fact the Offspring had two previous albums before Smash that I didn't know about, it was my first taste of gatekeeping
I had that experience, but with Green Day.

When I learned about the previous albums before Smash, anytime they got brought up I'd ask if they've listened to them. If not, I'd break out the CDs so that they could.
Gatekeeping is the worst and useless.

The Offspring has multiple cover to cover albums where you don't need to skip a song. Not many bands can say that. They have a place at the top with a few others in my high school days and beyond. They deserve more recognition as greats of the 90's-00's

It depends on who you ask. ST, Ignition, Let The Bad Times Roll, and maybe Co1 are good, but the rest have too many slow songs. Not all slower songs are bad but there are too many of them.

The craziest thing about the Offspring for me is the fact that Dexter really just wanted to study biology and the band became a distraction for him. He ended up getting his PhD years later!
Besides being a great band, one of the great things about The Offspring is their unique combination of Punk and what is deemed traditional studies. So bad ass to see a punk rock lead singer have a PhD in Molecular Biology.
I also love Dexter's hot sauce, El gringo bandito. It's got great flavor haha

The Offspring have 10 albums full of hit songs. There's not a single album that hasn't had at least 2-3 amazing songs. Such an underrated band!

IGNITION was an absolutely amazing punk album when it came out . And still holds up in the same convo as pennywise and the like .
Dexter once said , when asked by a reporter “ what would you say when people tell You that you’re not punk “ he said “ we don’t consider ourselves a punk band . We stopped being a punk band when punks stopped coming to out shows . We can’t help who likes us and who doesn’t . Isn’t the goal of being a professional musician , to make a living making music ?”
"Punks": We're never going to conform to your ideals.

Smash gets all the love, but for me Ignition is their best album by a mile. The perfect sweet spot between the rawness of their self titled and the polish of Smash.

Ignition is to The Offspring as Insomniac is to Green Day for me. Both records hold up to this day and both are very underrated.
The Offspring got me into playing music for sure! I’d drum along to Smash, Ixnay, and Americana back-to-back-to-back. I still consider them my favorite band. Met Dexter once while I was on tour in Texas backstage at Warped Tour. He gave us beers and we had jagur shots. Super down to Earth, and cooler than I expected.
Idk, for whatever reason I assumed he wouldn’t give is the time of day, but nope! Super cool, I still have a picture of me with Dexter, Budweisers in hand.
I know a lot of people don’t like them that much, or say they’re not punk. I don’t care, I believe they are. Ixnay has a ton of great tracks that weren’t discussed. Love Gone Away, but there’s so many great punk songs on that album I wish you brought up. Regardless, great video! Loved it!

I'm a 60 year old boomer and The Offspring were *my* entry into punk. The fact that they are self-deprecating in several of their songs is what made them accessible to me.
I'm 60 and the Offspring made me realize that punk was dead. Soccer moms with a recording contract.
You might want to check out Black Flag, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Voidoids, Rollins Band, etc.
These guys fired their drummer for not getting vaxed. Conformists of the lowest order.

I am only a recent fan though. Im not that knowledgeable about back then so my opinion is probably nothing to be taken personally.
Ixnay on the hombre is probably the most underrated album of that time frame. So many good songs including meaning of life.
That's my favorite album from them.

My step-dad has one tattoo: The Flame-Skull from the cover of Conspiracy of One, and The Offspring was the most common artist played in the household growing up, I loved it. When I got older I asked what the tattoo was, and he said it was in memory of his best friend, Richie Cagney, they went to see The Offspring live every time they toured in Aus, and Richie died in 2001 not long after Conspiracy of One was released, they planned to get the tattoo together but it was never to be
So in 2020 I bought the Deluxe 20th Anniversary record of Conspiracy of One for him, and he has it on his mantle piece. I still have the flick knife Richie gave him and I keep it polished and sharp always

Thats’s awesome. I have a similar story. My first tattoo was the Bouncing Souls logo. The heart and crossbones with the NYC skyline in the heart. My good friend from high school, Ian, and I used to play hackey sac in the parking lot in between classes at our first year of community college. We both talked often about getting bouncing souls tattoos. Saw them live numerous times together. Unfortunately, he passed away before he got his. I got it for a number of personal reasons to me and was planning to get it done anyway, but that was one of the main inspirations behind it when the time came. He never got to do it, so I did it for both of us. Yea 🤘🏼

One thing I've always appreciated about The Offspring is their signature vocal sound. They way Dexter's vocals are always doubled in the choruses is just a very offspring thing. I know doubling vocals is common, but there is something about the way they do it that stands out to me.
I feel the exact same way about Noodle’s guitar tone. any of their riffs hit and you know immediately that it’s an offspring song
They harmonize incredibly well, and the harmonization on top of speedy skate punk riffs is what makes me adore their sound so much.
It is also his voice. He can say one word without music at the beginning of a song and you know, it is Dexter.
his voice is just really characteristic despite being an objecively pretty awful singer

"Jennifer Lost The War" & "Hypodermic" are such amazing songs; Self Titled & Ignition are criminally underrated albums.
ST and Ignition are probably their best releases IMO.

As a younger Millennial, my first exposure to The Offspring was "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" and I still think that is their best song. It wasn't exactly like their early stuff, but it was so appropriate at the time, and really fit in with the 2000s pop punk scene. It was really cool to see an older band make music that so strongly connected with teenagers.
I'm a Gen X-er, only a few years younger than the band, and that song really felt like an anthem for people my age. It seems to be talking about that promise that we were given, that with a little bit of brains and a lot of hard work (and maybe a willingness to stab a competitor in the back?), we could do anything we wanted to.
But I just love that it spoke to younger people in a similar way.
Same, after that song came out they became my favorite band for years. I think it came out when I was in 7th grade.
Still can sing almost every song from their discography.

The Offspring was the first band I constantly listened to as well in school, except, the thing is, I'm still in school as a sophomore I high school 🤟
My 4 year old loves them, I have as well. I will never forget seeing them in college and hearing the kid's aren't alright, he killed it too.
Self-Titled, Ignition, Smash, Ixnay, and Americana were the soundtrack to my youth (along with all the early Bad Religion). I owe these bands so much

The Offspring and Bad Religion have good stuff, but BR has held up better.
I'm 42 and it's been 25 years since i first listened to "all i want" but still, every time i hear it i feel i could break a wall with my head
The Offspring is by far my #1 all-time favorite band. Ixnay got me through my angsty teens with songs like The Meaning of Life, I Choose, Change the World, All I Want, and Amazed.
Ixnay also one of my favourite ever albums

Totally agree. Literally know all their songs by heart and often is my go-to playlist at the gym. I'm a middle school teacher, I tried to turn the kids on The offspring as much as I can. Frankly I'm appalled at some of the crap these kids listen to today.
Yeah bro Ixnay is my favorite album as well and is really underrated when compared to smash. The meaning of life, mota and all I want are probably my fav songs from the band as a whole
The Offspring is really a huge landmark in LatinAmerica. They opened US punk to us, before that we were all about La Polla Records

I had no idea that punk or rock music was a thing in Latin America. All US media told me is that only rap and traditional music exist in Latin America.

@@kittykittybangbang9367 latin america has a lot of punk bands. The fact that most of the countries were under dictatorships during the 80s really opened a need for punk attitude. Bands like Flema, 2 minutos, Attaque 77, Fiskales ad-hok, ratos de porao in Brasil. Just to name a few. There's a world of music outside the US, go find it!
Everything the offspring did in the 2000s faded about as fast as it came… except “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” which was a random smash hit they had in 2008 that still gets rotation
Hammerhead & Half Truism are also total bangers on that album!
You're Gonna Go Far Kid is an absolute banger that I don't think anyone saw coming.
I also think Splinter gets a lot less credit than it deserves. The album has some of their fastest and most aggressive punk songs in their whole back catalogue but people just remember it for "Hit That"
Divide by zero was an awesome throwback to the old style.
Yeah I'm a bit surprised it was glossed over since it was a pretty significant commercial comeback after the relative failure of Splinter.

The Offspring were 100% my introduction to punk. I will always call them my favorite band just for opening the door to so many great bands I probably never would have known about.
Their music got me through some really hard times when I was younger. They're getting me through some stuff even to this day. I will always appreciate this band.
Indeed their music has a way of inspiring and helping through at the same time, despite of some really depressive/depressing lyrics. I was in a similar situation in the early 2000s, walking through hardships - and "Ixnay on the Hombre" and "Conspiracy of One" were my favorites, many of the songs on both made me feel like "couldn't it could have better than that", for example "Amazed" (IOTH) and "Come Out Swinging" and "Dammit, I Changed Again" (COO).

I really appreciate that you extol the significance of bands like this, even if you don't love their catalog. It's a humble approach. I think we can all learn from that.

All I can say is "THANK YOU. FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT." I get why The Offspring get all the flak, but they were a legitimately good punk band back in what? 1995? And Nitro Records put out a TON of good bands. I remember watching the Come Out and Play video on MTV followed by Basket Case, and music was never the same for me after that. The Offspring exemplified a punk sound that Green Day didn't tap into. They weren't poppy. It was anger and aggression, and so when when I sought out other punk music, I found Bad Religion and Pennywise, bands that had bigger things to say. In a weird way, Green Day was the wholesome angel on my shoulder, and The Offspring was the pissed-off devil on the other shoulder. They're both important.
Before 95, I seen them in 93. They killed and were genuinely nice guys.
I have always thought that Green Day was the inferior band: they to this day bore the hell out of me.
Dirty Magic from ignition is still my favorite song by them! Always thought if it was on smash it would have been a bigger hit.

Every time I listened to Ignition I always waited for Dirty Magic, it was the last song on the first side of the cassette :) Also love Forever and a day which was the last song on the second side :) It's funny how we choose our favorite tracks. Take it like a man, LAPD and No hero are also good and even today after all of these years I still think so
Getting Smash for Christmas '94, then seeing The Offspring and The Vandals in '99 with my best friend changed our lives. We started a band less than 2 years later. Now the lead singer is a sound guy for several venues. I'm just a fan these days but still love it.
Shows were different back then. It was such an awesome experience

This is basically the same for me haha. Add in Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Korn and Soundgarden to that list and that's what really started shaping my music taste in 1999.

I would literally fall asleep to the Offspring almost every night as a 13-year-old. I just loved their music so much I couldn't take my earphones out and just played their music until I fell asleep. Good times I forgot about until I saw this video.

But the song Gotta Get Away grabbed me most by my young heart strings . Even now all these years later when I hear it pop up on the radio at work it takes me back to those feelings and place I was in .
One of the factors of the mass popularity of “Americana” you missed was its general cultural relevance at the time it was released- witch is evident in the comments section here- so many people associate it with that time in their own lives because it was a reflection of our culture! Yes it was corny- but it was a time when everything in pop culture was reflecting the mounting consumerist overload that the economic stability of the 90’s had given us, and began showing the first signs of a youth that felt a general discomfort with the values and hypocrisy being displayed around us.
I think the shift that occurred in the offsprings sound, which you point out is so evident, between the albums of “Americana” and their “conspiracy of one,” is a prime embodiment of this shift in perspective. It’s a major divide between the late Gen-x-ers and early Millenials rooted in the realities they both grew up in. Gen x-ers grew up with promises of a bright future (as long as they were willing to quit smoking pot and sell out) while millennials grew up in a climate of fear-mongering, uncertainty, and growing economic instability. From the panic over the transition to the new millennia, to 9/11, the Iraq War, and then the economic crisis of ‘08, there were a generation of kids who looked ahead to a future that looked very different to that of their boomer parents generation…
The offspring stayed relevant because they were able to reflect this shift- wether it’s authentic or not. The truth is their music spoke to the youth at the time- and clearly still do to some extent…

Well said! I'll never forget hearing that album for the first time. My parents wanted to take it away from me because of the song "Americana." I still love it.

I was 14 when Dookie and Smash came out. Those music videos were my introduction to punk rock and I was particularly drawn to the Offspring. It lead me to Epitaph and that first Punk-O-Rama comp and of course to NOFX, Bad Religion, Rancid Pennywise, Down By Law and that first Ten Foot Pole record. Whenever I could get a ride I was at my local Tower Records for hours sifting through the CD racks. I found The Vandals, The Adolescents, Op Ivy, The Descendents, The Misfits and The Dead Kennedys and eventually all of the bands that made up the skate punk boom on Fat, Nitro, Hopeless, No Idea and Asian Man Records. I owe my love of punk rock/independent music to The Offspring and those videos for Come Out and Play/Self Esteem so those dudes will always have an important place in my life.

Me too, I was 11 but my sister grew up listening to the old school stuff but also being from long Beach, we had all thr OC and valley bands.
The Offspring got me into heavier music when I discoverd them. Before that I listened to mainstream radio and music my dad used to listen (Queen, Genesis, The Who etc.). This one time, in '95, my cousin visited me, he had a tape with him with Smash on it. He was like "yo cousin, it's your cousin. Listen to this sh*t" and I was like "whoa, that's heavy metal. cool bro.". Didn't know much about punk or metal back then because I just turned 8 that year as did my cousin. But hey, the least I can say is that The Offspring had a massive impact on my musical taste and I will always cherish it.
the main reason why i love the offspring, is because they can go from super fun songs like "hit that, mota, pretty fly for a white guy" to serious things such as "gone away, or the kids aren't alright"
to being actually cool with their music, with "come out and play, self esteem, and Genocide" and EVERY ONE OF THOSE ARE ACTUALLY GOOD SONGS EVEN WHEN YOU ARE COMING FROM A MUSICAL STANDPOINT ONLY.
It reminds me of great shows like Futurama and Scrubs. When they wanted to pull on your heart strings they knew exactly how to do it

Offspring was probably the first punk band i got into. They had some cheesy songs naturally, but they had a lot of songs around serious subjects that were far more eloquent than other bands.

I've had the pleasure to meet them on several different occasions. Dexter twice, Noodles once, and Pete once as well. All such stand up cool dudes who really care about their fans. I first met Dex when I was 12 and he remembered me and my dad 11 years later. Noodles signed my guitar which was his first signature model Ibanez. These guys are just fucking rad all around.
I live in Australia and The Offspring headlined a festival here and a friend of mine met em at the airport as they were heading to the next stop of the festival. Said he had a beer with noodles and saw that dexter was talking to some other guy (either someone from another band on the festival or a festival organiser) and my mate was like "thanks for having a beer with me dude, I'd like to meet Dex, but he seems busy so I'll leave you guys to it" and noodles was like "no way dude! I'll grab him" and yeah noodles grabbed Dex and the 3 of them had an awesome convo at the bar in the airport. So jelous of my mate! They deffs sound like stand out dudes!

Well done. Just saw The Offspring last week for the first time and really enjoyed the show. I'm more of a classic rock/metal guy, but am amazed at how many great tunes they have!

Offspring are one of my favorite bands. IMHO they had a much wider range of genres on their albums than most bands in the scene, paired with great songwriting. they were never afraid to put out singles that are more mainstream and catchy while still having good punk songs on the album. Americana for example has pop songs like Pretty Fly or WDYGAJ but also full blown punk songs like Have you ever or No brakes, even a progressive rock kinda song, Pay the man. i think this variety always made them successful
Americana is a great album! So many amazing songs!
I don't know how typical my experience is here, but i was 9 or 10 when Smash rose to prominence. And i really don't think you can measure the impact that a song like Bad Habit had on bunch of suburban pre-teens in that era. Like that song especially during the vocal breakdown was an eye opener to a lot of kids about how raw and vulgar music could be, and the capacity music could have to send your parents into a tailspin. I was too young for Guns and Roses, Metallica and Nirvana's breakthroughs, but that album was a lightning bolt when your first learning what your taste in music is going to be, and how your generations music can really rankle your elders sensibilities. It's sort of snotty rebel music, but i really feel like Smash was one of the first true "can't let my mom know I've got this" records for millennial kids
100%. A kid in my Year 4 class could do a perfect rendition of that vocal breakdown and the rest of us were completely in awe. Genuinely was the height of pop culture cred for a bunch of 8 year olds.

I remember listening to Smash in the car with my dad a lot when I was around 9 or 10. One time my mum was in the car and heard Bad Habit and lost her shit. Not long after that I couldn't find the album again, found out a few years later that she'd hidden it because of that song 😂
My musical taste was heavily influenced by the tapes in my dad’s car as well, Smash being one of these. And my mum couldn’t understand why he listened to a Christian Contemporary radio station: it was because it was on the same place on the AM band that the heavy rock station was on the FM. He used to flick it over to AM when he got home every time!

I was 13 when I first heard the Offspring. It was Pretty Fly, seen it on mtv in 97 or 98. I remember I asked my big brother to buy me Americana but he didn't have a clue and he brought me Ixnay :) which was cool, because Ixnay has become my favourite album for long time. It was my first serious exposure to punkrock and thanks to the Offspring I got into punk for many years to come. I wish we've had internet back in the days when I was fully idolizing Dexter. I was literally reading everything I could find about them, hanging posters in my room, writing their lyrics on the walls. I wish I had access to information like we have today. Even though my music taste has changed so many times and after having so many temporary fav bands, I always make sure I'm up to date with the Offspring. Although I wish I still had this spark of the youth and could feel the same unconditional love I used to have for them when I was a kid. Now I'm more critical about music in general, so I'm also more critical about the Offspring. I don't see them as gods anymore haha but mortal people who make weird decisions. Like I will never understand how come Greg and Ron are no longer in the band. I mean, I know what happened, I read about it. What I mean is for me, as a bass player, the rhythmic section is a core of the band, and Ron and Greg were like an untouchable duo, and I couldn't believe they all split, sadly money was involved. That broke that illusion for me and actually I'm less of a fan of their current stuff. Dexter is a creative force, I get it, but letting Ron and Greg go is a big L for the band, in my opinion.
The Offspring was my introduction to punk. I love all the albums but Ignition is a pure masterpiece.
Absolutely adore The Offspring. They're the primary reason I got into punk, with Smash and Americana being my introduction to the skate punk sound. Ixnay on the Hombre is probably my favorite all time album.
Know what the funny thing is, when I was a teenager right around when Smash came out there was a bit of bickering that the Offspring weren't punk anymore and had gone completely mainstream.

Growing up as a skateboarder and listening to punk and thrash metal in the late 80's and through the 90's! I couldn't stand how bands that nobody knew were cool but as soon as they started to get some success they suddenly became uncool. I loved the Offspring 's earlier music for how raw it was and yes as they got more radio play and popularity it wasn't as raw but it was still fun.
The Offspring for me growing up was like your cool uncles introducing you to their punk record collection at a very young and impressionable age. Their contribution to the mainstream opened gates for me as an 11 year old for me to hear their inspirations, and was the catalyst to many like minded preteen’s intro into punk rock. Smash also was important in establishing Epitaph as an indie label that could go toe to toe with the heavyweight major labels.
Back in the days, Self Esteem and Come out and play were huge hits! Self-Estem was also one of the first song I learned to play on bass.

I grew up right across the street from Pete Parada. I used to hang out with his oldest brother Mike, who passed away a couple of years ago. After I moved out, when I would come visit my folks, you could hear Pete wailing away across the street. Amazing that he came from a small NY town to become a kick ass drummer in a legendary band. Our whole town is proud to see his success.

@@IntenseHistory he was their drummer for 14 years until they kicked him out because he couldn't get the poke. he has a medical condition that would really screw him up if he takes any kind of vaccines, and the band who he thought were his friends cut him loose and cut all ties with him and his whole family. they did him dirty, and that's why I am no longer a fan.

I've always thought of the Offspring as the band that unwittingly took a bullet for punk in its push to the mainstream. They, nor no-one else saw it coming, but once it did it kinda placed them in a position where they couldn't simply turn back and be "just another underground punk band" but instead, use the platform to drag as many of their peers along with them for the ride as they could. To do that they had to stay relevent for as long as they could by releasing some terrible (but catchy and popular) singles. Unlike many other bands, it's the album fillers which are the stand out songs to the punk community rather than the single releases.
Let's be honest, you never really hear any well established punk bands speak negatively about The Offspring - which shows that amongst their peers, they still command a lot of respect!

Greetings from Finland. I was 15 when Smash came out. It was a huge cross-over success, nobody really disliked it. Punks who liked Bad Religion&NOFX loved it and Grunge fans who liked Nirvana&Alice in chains liked it too. It was also alternative enough and heavy enough for the rest. Peace!

Right before the big boom many people liked it, eventually the snobby “punks” would start hating on them. Something which happens a lot in all kinds of genres. Bands that grow so big and successful, because of how good they are and resonate well with the masses, will eventually get hated on by, well… the snobs.

I totally agree with you. I can attest for the latter, as a huge Nirvana fan. Offspring reminded me of grunge with that punk twist. They were honestly how I defined punk to be, until I was exposed to other bands obviously. To this day, my own writing style even has hints of that punk sound.

The Offspring was one of the bands to make me play guitar, their riffs inspired me and to this day I think they have amazing some of the most creative riffs ever in punk, borderline thrash metal fast style riffs. I play metal but am heavily inspired by Offspring riffs
The Offspring were the band that made me gravitate towards writing and playing music (along with mid 90s video games soundtracks on the Sega Genesis). I found a copy of Smash in my dad's CDs (he was mostly a Led Zep, Pink Floyd type of guy and very vocal about hating punk - very sheltered household when it came to some things). I was 10 years old. Changed everything for me. Started playing bass a few years later. While I like the stuff my dad got me into directly (Black Sabbath especially), I had never heard that kind of music before.
Gotta love how even though you don't really like their music you respect their impact. Big ups.
I remember thinking Offspring wasn't a punk band in high school when Smash came out. Not because they were popular and had videos on MTV but mostly because they didn't sound like any of the Socal/Epitaph bands I already knew. And yes, I thought they were a corny band for little kids and dudes who listened to Metallica's black album. As I got a little older I realized how much a huge hit like Smash can do for an independent label and while I don't really care for Offspring, I can appreciate what they did for the whole scene.
I love the offspring. Simple fun music. Self esteem is what made me want to learn how to play guitar.

I love the offspring. SMASH was the first punk album I heard that I actually liked way back in highschool. Like when it came out. I was a sophomore metalhead and it grabbed me. Yup, I'm old.
I personally like all their era's and albums but I can't say that every song is great. There are some real stinkers in the mix for sure. I love the variety of the soundscape that they employ and Dexter really is a fantastic lyricist.
Man I LOVE “The Offspring” it was literally my first favorite band. I was born in 91 so obviously I didn’t find it myself. My big brother liked them and I would hear it from him and I remember it being the first music I really got into. I have liked them my entire life. When I was a teenager in the 2000’s I got my friends into them. I remember after I got my driver’s license and car when I was 16 one of the first places I went was Walmart to find the greatest hits cd from “The Offspring!” My friends ended up liking them so much they kept trying to steal my CD. I literally caught one friend in particular trying to steal it around 20 times. 5 of those IN ONE DAY. Lol 😂 Finally I went and got it for him for his birthday. He was so happy. His parents gave him a Camaro for his birthday and he genuinely seemed more excited for the CD. I was excited for him about his Camaro. I asked him if he wanted to go take a drive in it. He was more focused on opening the CD so we could play it in the car. We sat in his driveway for like 10 minutes while he was listening to the CD. I had to remind him about going for a drive in his Camaro while we listen to it. Lol 😂
I mark the biggest growth in my musical tastes happening around the time I first heard Smash and Soundgarden's Superunknown. Before that my musical taste was questionable, I just kinda followed whatever was popular at school. I grew up in a remote small town, and none of the older members of my family had any influence on my musical tastes so I was just kinda grasping at whatever I knew how to grab. Those two albums changed my life.
Thank you so much for this video. It really says a lot about your character that even though you do not care for The Offspring you still recognize their importance and impact for the genre. I am one of those kids you were talking about. Growing up I mostly listened to nothing but country, but when my friend had me listen to Americana. I loved that album so much I went back and listened to all their old stuff and similar bands and look into the bands that inspired the Offspring. The same happened to me, 14 years old, the only thing on the radio was Backstreet Boys and latin stuff (I live in Argentina), until Americana. It opened the door of rock to me, even though it was bad seen in my social circle. I started playing guitar, I still play guitar and piano. I listened to them 24-7, it was my favorite band
I still love Smash and Ixnay on the Hombre as much as did as a teenager. Dexter's voice is unique and he has a higher register than most other vocalists in "punk."
I just saw The Offspring in concert a few weeks ago. Still sounded great and it was a hell of a show.
Offspring is THE band that got me into punk when I was 13 and inspired me to start my own band. I was a bit sad that Splinter wasn't even mentioned, it was the first Offspring album I heard (because back in 2004 it was still fresh lol) and it totally blew my mind.

Soon after Smash was released, they played one of the music award shows. And instead of playing one of their radio 'hits', they played Bad Habit which was very not mainstream at the time. I think people were taken back from that but I loved it. It was such a punk thing to play that song at that venue.

The Offspring was the 1st concert I ever went to. June 10th, 1995 at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI. They did a 2 night stint because it was the last 2 dates of their tour, the 1st day sold out in about 15mins after tickets went on sale so they decided to add a 2nd show due to high demand. I was 11 years old & my mom took me but we got caught in the moshpit. My mom was so freaked out that she made me stay with a lady security guard at the gate at the front of the stage while she went outside to smoke a a half a pack of cigarettes 😂 She came back before the Offspring came on & Noodles gave her a half a bottle of Jack Daniels to help calm her nerves and the crowd tried to rip it out of her hand & Dexter had to calm them down!
I'll NEVER forget that concert!
They got me into punk rock in the mid 90s, I went back and got Ignition, I bought the self titled album from 1989. From there It was NOFX, Pennywise, AFI,Lagwagon etc.
I am one of the people you mentioned, where The Offspring was my gateway band into punk. I still remember the first time I heard Smash. I was in Boy Scouts in the mid-90’s at camp for the weekend. A friend let me listen to the CD for the entire weekend, which changed my entire outlook on music.

After all these years i still listen to the offspring and now my favorite album from them is Ignition, such a consistent album from start to finish.

I was 5 or 6 years old when my best friend's much older sister Had her first boyfriend. I really liked this guy because he often brought comic books, Nintendo games and CDs, among them the Smash album. We took two Tennis rackets as air guitars and this was when my everlasting love to this band began.
I actually loved Conspiracy Of One! But I prefer the older stuff. Pre-Americana. I'm also wearing my AFI sing the sorrow shirt today as I watch this. Not my favorite but it's a good album. My favorite from AFI is Black Sails. That album still holds a special place in my heart.
I got introduced to rock music with conspiracy of one in junior high school. Offspring will always be a part of me even though I rarely listen to them any more. With that said everytime I do it is a almost like a spiritual / timeless experience
Offspring has always been my number one band that got me into PunkRock when I was a teenager, I still love them and everytime I get back to their music after a while its an absolute treat. Love their unique sound.
Ixnay on the hombre was my first real album that really got me into music. Tons of great tracks in there and I feel it’s usually overshadowed by Smash’s success.
Also, I don’t think their relevance stopped after ‘Conspiracy of one’ because I remember in 2008 with the release of Rise and Fall, Rage and grace everyone was back into the Offspring, at least in Europe. ‘You’re gonna go far kid’ still gets played in bars and radios.

As a teen in the 90s I used to come home from school and get pumped up on the Offspring before going out on my dirt bike. As an adult I would still listen to them when I'd take my motorcycle out.
In fact they were still on my "ride" playlist up until the whole COVID debacle.
My first show was Voodoo Glowskulls and Pulley. So stoked to hear both bands mentioned in one video.
Smash was a massive gateway drug and also helped find another bands too, remember no internet. Bad religion’s stranger than fiction was another landmark for me and so was rancid’s out come the wolves. That was my gateway to ska. Also millencolin’s desmond dekker cover opened some ska doors for me. Good times.
Seeing "Pretty Fly" on TRL when I was 11 years old is what singlehandedly got me into punk. I bought Americana and loved every song on it (and got sent to the principal's office for singing them at the lunch table). I suspect this probably has a lot to do with AFI becoming my all-time favorite band a couple years later.
But I was watching TRL because I loved Backstreet Boys and N'SYNC, so I guess you could say they're the ones who really got me into punk.

The Offspring are what got my friends and I into the scene. It’s exactly like you said here, smash and ixnay got us started before getting into Green Day and Rancid. They had so many songs in skate vids which were having a huge moment too. Thanks to these guys, we got into Fat, the other stuff on Epitaph, then into other punk, older punk, hardcore, etc. They were a gateway drug and a huge influence on a lots of kids’ musical tastes, especially in the flyover states.
I saw them in 1994 on MTV, with my mouth wide open as the roentgen skull started singing "lá lá la lá lá lá la la lá lá" and that was it.

How about a video about The Dwarves... their story is an amazing one... from their roots as a garage band, to their time on sub pop, to the hard-core speed punk records, to utilizing surf, electro and hip hop into their records, to now pretty much becoming the LAST punk band still putting out GOOD records. They haven't gotten their due as one kf the last great bands out there. Give em some love !!!

Great video. Your quote from Brett about rising all Punk is spot on. I saw this firsthand. I remember going to a record store and i literally bought my first PENNYWISE album (ABOUT TIME) because there was a little poster that said "LIKE OFFSPRING-- You'll love PENNYWISE." (Something like that) Bought the album and loved it. OFFSPRING indirectly was a huge benefit to the entire punk scene. SMASH is one of the most important punk albums of all-time because of the exposure as well as the financial windfall for Epitaph that allowed so many other bands to flourish.
As an 11 year old kid in Bulgaria The Offspring got me into music and Dexter got me into science. Listened to all things possible after that (including very extreme metal, prog, hip hop and electronica) but they are and will always be my first love in music. Met a bunch of great people because of their music. I was giving tape copies to everybody interested of Smash, Ixnay and Americana at pre-high school. After that I got my university degrees of Molecular Biology and Medical Biology and now I'm working at a hospital. As a kid I thought that I want to be like this dude fronting that band, a nerd, scientist and a punkhead. Great video

I already loved the band, but there was a really cute girl in my middle school who worshiped them, so with a hope to impress her, I made a ridiculous effort at the age of 13 to memorize as much of their lyrics as possible.

The Offspring were and still are one of my four favorite bands ever. I can sing along nearly every song - and amongst all that charts crap in the late 2000s and the damn 2010s and now 2020s, all of their songs are awesome, great rocksongs. In the 2020s, when they came back after almost 9 years of absence - postponing their new album to Saint Nimmerline's Day, it is definitely the title track of the 2021 Album "Let the Bad Times Roll".
Still rock the Nitro records compilation CD they gave out at one of the offspring concerts. The Thought Remains The Same? Has everything from The Vandals to Sloppy Seconds to Guttermouth … love that CD!
The Offspring are a great and important band for me. Smash came out in 1994 when I was almost 11 years old and right after Cobain blew his head off. My world that I had just entered of discovering rock music was my thing was shattered by that shotgun. But Offspring helped fill the void, with Green Day, which as Fin so astutely notes, lead me to Nofx and Bad Religion, and then onto both Black Flag and CRASS. That’s so wild you put it like that because you’re exactly right which confirms to me that the same evolution was happening at the same time all across the country despite no internet or other connectivity in existence. It just twitched particular kids across the planes in the same independent way. It’s pretty fascinating, really. You should write a book about it.
They absolutely fucking killed it when I saw em open for 311 a few years ago. Every song sounded as good or better than the recordings and they brought it with their energy level. That latter part really surprised me.
I totaly love The Offspring! The lyrics are cool and fun and so relable, and the rifs of the guitar are so nice! 🇧🇷 And the songs... no matter how old it has, it still so cool to listening, special when we are with our friends, at parties and stuff.
I only recently got into The Offspring and they quickly became one of my all time favourite bands because of just how catchy and good their stuff is. The first song that I got into was "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" which I became obsessed with (help) and it became a meme in my friendgroup because of how much I love it. Rise and Fall is generally an underrated album by them cos I don't really see people discussing how good YGGFK and songs such as Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?, Takes Me Nowhere and Trust in You are. YGGFK made me check out other songs and honestly, I love a bunch of them: The Kids Aren't Alright, Gone Away, Self-Esteem, even Pretty Fly are some of my favourite songs by Offspring.

I love The Offspring!! They have a lot of good songs that never get old!! They're underrated IMO.
While in the 90's I was heavy into Alice in Chains, Nirvanna, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden I was introduced to this unknown band at the time, Offspring and their SMASH hit album. Offspring was definitely a different sound but boy did it rock! It wasn't until I subscribed to online music that I went back to their first two albums which are a must listen to. Songs Kick him when he's down and Dirty Magic on Ignition are awesome! Dexter is a musical and science genius!
