Growing fear over increase of seniors experiencing homelessness in San Diego

- There's growing concern the county's upcoming ‘Point in Time’ count will show more seniors experiencing homelessness.
The 2023 count found 29% of people experiencing homelessness are 55 and older, up from 25% the year before.
"The trend has been upward. Anecdotally, just from the number of people coming in for our services, we continue to see an upswing," said Serving Seniors President and CEO, Paul Downey.
Downey attributes that upswing to the higher cost of living, as well as a lack of shelter beds and housing.
"In San Diego, now for every 10 people that are housed 16 become unhoused. A year ago, it was 10 housed, 13 unhoused," said Downey.
During Monday’s lunch service at Serving Seniors, the cafeteria was packed with seniors in need, many of whom slept outside waiting for the doors to open because they have nowhere else to go.

living in a dystopian nightmare
America is becoming more of a pain and suffering country
This isn't the fault of these people - probably most of them were lucky to make $30,000 to $40,000 per year and the benefits from that like a pension and SS just doesn't cover the gouging rent that landlords demand now. Hell back in 1968 I was making $369 per month NOT week and I had a good job in bank. Most peoples salaries were very low back then but rent and cars were affordable too. I bought 2 brand new Camaros 1968 and then 1972 and both were under $4,000. Who the hell can afford the rent now????
It’s not just San Diego in my state they rose my rent 200$ my pay hasn’t gone up in 5 years I’m a senior and may have to live out of my car
Business owners don’t seem to care if their employees are housed or unhoused.
Empathy and compassion is missing in a big way.
I hope you don’t have too, I hope your pay goes up to help you.
People living in their vehicles don’t count.
Two years ago I was renting a small house for $500 a month outside New York. Now who knows where I'll end up.
Keep voting for the politicians who "care" by word only, not by actions. Big money funds their convincing campaigns, meanwhile the candidates that actually want to help get squashed. It's almost as if this strife were intentionally caused and exacerbated for the personal power and success of someone else.
Because our country doesn't care about the most marginalized and then includes the elderly.
Imagine the government taking the house I worked and paid for because of some unfortunate issue whereby I could not pay taxes? I’ll guarantee that would never happen. Freedom is a myth.
@@backagain5216 Because our overlords are so damn corrupt. Especially the republicans.
No housing
No parking
Greedy developers and landlords
More Boomers retiring
And fixed income for those who have already retired

Imagine paying into the system your whole life only to be pushed into the streets yet there’s plenty of money for non citizens.
It would never happen to me. I’d be gone but not before…..imagine taking the house I worked to own because I couldn’t pay the taxes?

Home ownership is a myth.
But all these illegal immigrants have what they need!!!! American citizens should come first!!!! Politicians America!!!!
I'm 72 and live off of Social Security. HUD Section 8 money pays half my rent. Without that, I'd be homeless, too.
Where I am in the painted desert there's all sorts of old men living in their trucks or in tents and wooden boxes.
I'm one of them.
Have you tried pulling yourself up from your bootstraps. All you need is a firm handshake. 😂
Projections indicate that homelessness among older adults could nearly triple by 2030.
The population of adults aged 65 and older experiencing homelessness is anticipated to grow from 40,000 to 106,0002
That guy in the house in Claremont will be homeless soon if the city demolishes or sells the property he owns
If they make it down to the border ,they could surrender to. CBP, then get a voucher from the county for a motel room.
It's not a federal problem it's a local San Diego PUNK business community problem..
EXELLENT point.
@@wayneroberts6642It's a country wide problem.
God help these people in need.
Caring about each other and ensuring every level of society has what they need is a hard thing to do without equality across the board.
This makes me so sad. Our government spends millions of dollars helping other countries and we can’t even help these homeless people on our streets. Especially the elderly and ill people. Why do we vote people into office who repeatedly promise to improve our communities only to improve and beautify our cities. America’s finest city for what? We have thousands of migrants coming into our cities and in Chicago they are letting them stay in the police department at night and have them leave during the day to clean the police department and allow them to return @ night. What’s that saying about who we are? Stop making excuses about why and do your job. People are going to stop voting for the ones that just want a position in office and will not make a change!
The thing about hud/section 8 is not guaranteed. They keep enforcing rules that make it hard to live there. They target tenants and force them to move or threaten youvwith lease violations. WHAT people dont realize once you sign that contract you lose your privacy rights.Between the hostile, uncooperative neighbors, from the people in the office 🏬yes this country has gone down the tubes...
Were I in that city I would take any willing elderly to the migrant shelters to receive the same free services of medical, work, housing. Taxpayers dollars providing services to illegals and closed to Americans is an abomination that must end. Where are the activists?
Because that's not true, dear. Don't believe everything you hear. Especially the lies from the republicans. they're unwilling to work w dems.... The biggest pieces of shit. Vote blue. You can also look things up via Google to verify before you put them out to the internet ... Most everything that comes out of the republicans are lies.
Become an activist, get your a** out there and get involved. don't ask where they are.... democracy is not a spectator sport.
@@marryellenmonahan5585 Come with me I'm ready, let's go!
tax holidays needed for: gasoline, electric, gas
cap annual rent increases at 5%
Even better: Tie rent to median household income. A lot of landlords expect prospective tenants to make at least 3x the rent, yet for what they charge, you have to make sometimes double what the local median household income is.
How about lowering taxes
Why their children and grandchildren never take care of them. In least a cover for their elderly parents and grandparents.

@@marryellenmonahan5585Yeah, that's why they live rent free in luxury hotels.
What can we do to stop this!?
Stop voting democrats
Vote out democrats that planned the invasion
Why don't they close down schools for homeless seniors instead of all those illegal immigrants that are not from our country.
Because illegals will vote democrat
It's cheaper to help migrants than Americans
It will only increase because, many boomers have little, to no, retirement savings. I think, governments will have to buy apartment buildings and make them affordable for seniors. It's just, too expensive for seniors on SS alone to afford to live.
😢😢😢😢💔
Jesus Christ, deal with every greedy, selfish INDIVIDUAL in the U.S.A.
Misfortune can happen to anyone, but if you’re 65 and you’re living on the streets it’s likely due to poor decisions in life.
Or due to Blackstone tripling your rent.
some of those seniors were small landlords who rented a room or section of their own home to avoid homelessness. Now there is no legal protection for small landlords, only corporate landlords can function in this environment.

There is not enough low income housing for Seniors....our country and the briben administration SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.
It's not just the current administration, this stuff has been building up for a long time. Developers preferring to make high-income housing because that's where the big easy profits are, combined with environmentalists demanding more and more things that make it more expensive to build anything. Then you've got Wall St buying up all the real estate and charging insane rent, AirBnB making everything worse, wages that have remained essentially stagnant since the 80s when adjusted for inflation. And probably a few other things I've neglected to mention.

There is a very easy solution.
1. Build giant rural drug free facilities outside of cities that specialize in mental health. All people living on the street will be taken there against their will. If people are mentally ill and unable to take care of themselves they will be housed there permanently.
2. If people are unable to stay drug free or leave this shelter to go back to the street they go to jail. There should be opportunities to get clean and re integrate back into society but if they aren’t used the only other option is jail.
3. There is plenty of money to do this. We spend billions a year on the homeless. A facility could be built and run like this outside of every major city for less than we spent on Ukraine.
NOPE! You cannot jail innocent people because they are bereft of help.
