- Just off the shore of one of the nation’s most expensive zip codes, a community of free-spirited boat dwellers have found a way to live rent-free next to millionaires. Known locally as “anchor-outs,” their aging vessels float illegally on the waters off Sausalito, an exclusive enclave in the San Francisco Bay Area. But now, as enforcement ramps up, their floating utopia is under threat.

When a poor guy hits a rich guys dock with his boat, we change laws and hire people to destroy his property, when a rich man exploits a poor man’s labor for 50 years and gambles, loses and destroys the poor man’s retirement savings, we give the rich man our tax money because he’s too big to fail and that’s all you need to know about America in 2022 really.
When a poor person doesn't have enough saved up for retirement we call them foolish, when a big firm doesn't have enough to cover their billion dollar gambles we happily hand em all the cash they need

None, I don’t live on the water but I do live near a road so should a car drive into my wall can I lobby to get everyone’s cars impounded and destroyed and make everyone walk instead? Come on.
@@CosmicComputer Um....BOTH his dock and his house...there is more than one incident. Did you blank out when he discussed the one that hit his house? What about the other times as well? And insurance rates go up every time you make a claim....and there's the chance you get dropped by your insurance company after too many claims. It's easy for you to say 'Isn't this what insurance is for?' because you're never going to have to deal with any of this.
You live next to a road? How about if you lived at the bottom of a hill on that road and had neighbors up that hill that had several junker cars illegally parked on that hill. And every once in awhile the parking brake or brick chock holding them in place on that hill gave up and one would roll down the hill and into your house. How many times are you going to tolerate it, how many times are you going to deal with your insurance company for damages, how many times are you going to swallow your insurance rates going up before you make that call to report those illegally parked junker cars up that hill?

You clearly don't understand the ideology of free enterprise, capitalism, or democracy. America is a really shitty place because most people want to just be granted freedom, liberty, and false hope without putting anything into getting it. I am not a millionaire. I am just a working class person with an annual income less than 100k. I look around and there are tax breaks for the super wealthy and there are programs for the less fortunate meanwhile I pay my taxes and pay my bills on time and I have a pretty nice home yet right outside my home there are homeless people trashing the streets with human waste, drug needles, just garbage in general. Zombies that are suffering from addiction on anything from sniffing gas to meth roam the streets at all hours. Stop blaming people with money for your own dysfunction.

Cant say im too fond of those rich asshats, but they do have some valid points about boat drifting into their docks causing massive damage. That aspect aside i know people dream about living on the water and what not but its not cheap, boats require a lot of upkeep. Usually needing to being pulled to dry dock to be cleaned and repainted/epoxied every few years. Something a lot of these guys don't do for a decade if at all. Which is why they end up taking on water and getting condemned. Proper way of going about it is simply renting a dock slot and doing proper maintenance/upkeep to the boat.
They should take better care of their boats, and maybe they wouldn't be kicked out.
It's okay if the oil companies destroy the Gulf but a gas can on a personal watercraft is a real "threat" to the environment. Amazing!
Well at least Exxon's stock price didn't go UP in response to the Valdez spill. Oh wait, it did. Plus got a bunch of free money to make volunteers clean it up

The rich finance guy’s frustration is understandable, but the way he just stereotypes all of them as being meth addicts or burnouts is very telling of his attitude. He looks down at them from his ivory tower and doesn’t care where they go as long as they are out of his line of sight. Cares more about his property value than human beings.

And guess what he made his money with? Tax evasion? Or laundering within the rules? Art deals? It's being said, every millionaire has some shame over how they earned their first million.

As a former maid for a couple of these neighbors, I can assure you their money was inherited, not earned. No one in the neighborhood works hard or is even tired when they get home. Once home, they complain about the “entitled attitude” of the poor while drinking wine that costs more than a hotel room.
We call em nepotism babies where I'm from. Born rich but the idea of having to go through school and college (100% paid for) makes them feel self made, from the ground up success stories.

Dude that is spot on. I work in that area all the time and it’s full of rich entitled people. Good for them that they have money and success but it’s very sheltered.
Someone crashed into his waterfront home dock 16 times and you think it's about property value lmao. If they weren't such an eyesore and a nuisance nobody would care. They're directly affecting the people that they live next to.
The bottom line is this... who is worth more to society? Who pays taxes and contributes to the benefit of the city and state? Those that do will always win in this situation. It sucks for the anchor out people, but they chose that way of life and made the decisions they made.

I'm from San Francisco. To give you more background here, the waterfront homes in Marin County (in the Tiburon area), are worth an average of $5M - $15M. The people who live there are not just rich or millionaires, they are wealthy beyond measure. As a San Francisco native who has watched my city price out generations of residents, it's almost comical to watch these people who live on the Marin County waterfront complain about anchor-outs. Now I could understand if the anchor-outs broke into their houses, stole from them, etc, but to get upset at their existence is honestly a mix of hilarious and infuriating
The mega-rich, techies, and generational millionaires have sucked the soul of SF and the Bay like vampires, leaving just an empty husk, devoid of humanity. Shame what's happened to my birthplace, I can barely stomach looking at it anymore.
It's sort of like how I feel about Atherton, which is not so much a city, but the artificial absence of one that is visible from outer space. They're people who live in >$5million houses who are afraid to live near people who live in $2million houses.

What's shocking is how concerned these home-owners appear to be with the "environmental impact" of the boats. As though companies they work for don't account for 99% of the pollution in the ocean. Those boats are literally a drop in the ocean when it comes to pollution and the real culprits are white collar.

I live in similar place, where the skyrocketing rent is almost impossible for most people. Homeowners complain when they can't find painters, babysitters, maintenance people, landscapers, when the coffee shop down the street closes at 2pm for lack of staff... but it doesn't occur to them that none of those people they've come to rely on for their pleasant daily lives can live anywhere near their neighborhoods.
There was a "created" neighborhood near my old apartment. 100+ luxury homes on curated streets with names like Sunshine Avenue, with "intentional commerce" on the Main Street. Think cute coffee shop, tailor, local clothing and jewelry, organic groceries, hidden parking to not mess up the aesthetic of the street, all the "nice" things the residents wanted. The majority of the employees bused in every morning from the surrounding towns a half hour away, because no one working min wage in the "cute" coffee shop was buying a $3mil house in the neighborhood.
The employees having to bus in every morning is entirely intentional, these rich scumbags can’t tolerate living in close proximity to any poor person

@@tkokflux6322 The way investments are treated for tax purposes means that someone earning 1,000,000 dollars in long-term capital gains, and someone earning 40,000 dollars in wages, are taxed in the (roughly) same bracket, when you consider deferments and carried interest, and all the other things only available to the rich. If you truly think that you can get rich paying 23% interest on your wealth without having a whole shitload of ways to avoid paying those taxes, then you're just gullible.

In my country there are no problem with boats crashing into waterfront homes because we generally don't allow waterfront homes. The beaches for the most part belong to everyone and cannot be bought and built on.

Some people don't have the luxury of picking and choosing where they live, some people have commitments that they cant just walk away from and are simply trying to do the best with the cards that have been dealt to them. Telling them to leave just because they're an eyesore is probably one of the most selfish things you can do and doesn't actually solve anything, it simply creates more division between the rich and the poor. Where else are people supposed to live? Because, when you think about it all of the people that service these million-dollar properties, Carpenters, HVAC technicians, electricians, roofers, restaurant workers, coffee shop Baristas, etc... do not make enough money to live anywhere near the area.

I find it so fascinating when people think than millionaires are a fundamentally different human being than the rest of us. It is literally racism on the basis of class but racism is bad and classism is good? Do you think is that the homeless crisis in California can easily be solved by people who are not millionaires? Because that's the implication of what you said. Do you think that his brain just works better because he's a millionaire and he should uniquely have to solve this problem before he can get local laws enforced?

I lived anchored out in Richardson bay there for a couple years. It should be a basic human right to be able to anchor. I finished high school while anchored out. I am now a home owner, outright. People on the hill in a 3 million dollar home telling me what to do was a horrible feeling. I never caused any grief to anyone, and often helped people in fancy boats when they had issues. Lawmakers need to think again before destroying communities. 90 percent of the people anchored out were functional good people.
Did most of the people there properly dispose of their "waste water" and garbage though?
Like I know with a boat you either need to buy a boat that comes pre-equipped with a septic tank and water hook up line or retrofit the boat later. Then you need to dispose of the waste at a water hook up station every month. While I know it's legal to dispose of "waste water" when someone is 15 miles away from shore, those boats don't look like they're 15 miles away from shore.
Also I imagine it's expensive for people to dispose of their used coffee tins, paper towls, plastic wrappers and such in an environmentally friendly way, so I can see why some,of the anchor outs would not want to do that.
I'm not trying to troll you, I genuinely don't know so that's why I'm asking you.

It would be different if there was a designated area where people could anchor der boat for a small fee, kind of like a trailer park. It just seems very easy in america do not identify with your fellow, more unlucky countrymen because of this "promise" that everyone can live the american dream if they work hard". Great video but I think there was a missed opportunity to highlight how hard Marin County has fought new housing developments. They’re choosing to destroy the only home these people have but also prevent any new options from being built in the area. Not that the situation is okay, but potentially dumping oil or gas directly into the ocean is probably worse than something sitting in a landfill.
If a boat is genuinely in poor enough condition that it will sink and turn into a source of marine pollution. Then ultimately the reality is that many could end up homeless regardless of anyone interfering. If the lifestyle is sustained where they continue proper maintenance on that boat it should obviously be allowed. But for the boats shown, I can't help but think that this situation was always going to be just temporary and never sustainable indefinitely. A nice way to help would be to purchase the boats from owners before destroying them and offer welfare and housing to those who need it.

I went to school for boatbuilding. I would NOT recommend buying or living on a boat if you’re on a tight budget. Failure to do regular maintenance could end up with your house on the bottom of the bay. Remember folks, BOAT is an acronym for BUST OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND 😢
Something noteworthy not mentioned in this video is that you can live legally on a boat if you just pay rent at a marina or dock, its still cheaper than renting a house but there is limited space and many marinas may not allow houseboats, but it is an option that many people do, its not just live on land or live illegally on the water for free.
Many marinas also enforce rules about the age of the boat, which excludes many of these people. It's hard being poor anywhere, and if a marina has a choice between renting a slip to you, or the rich guy with a 500k yacht that he takes out twice a year, you can bet the rich guy will get the slip.
Yeah they make you a criminal for being poor and living on a boat, then when they get pushback they provide a “legal” option that’s unaffordable and normal people can’t afford or with caveats and standards they can’t achieve, thus giving them the power to arrest the poor.

Liveaboard marinas are extremly rare and restrictive!
There is a bit more to this than is really covered. I live in SF, and I know a few people that do live on the water in a boat. One of my good friends is an Aerospace engineer and lives on his boat, has a Starlink for the internet and works from home. He stays here for 5-6 months of the year, then heads out to sail wherever the wind takes him the other 6 months of the year. He makes good money, but not enough to afford a SF home, instead, he roams the Arctic, travels the world, and etc. He has never had a problem, but his boat is maintained, it runs, and it is sea-worthy. It's like someone that lives in an RV full time just driving around the country, stopping off at RV parks, but it's a boat... no one has an issue with it. Then you have the other side of it, the streets you see with a line of older broken down RV's that aren't really RV's anymore, they'll never run, and are now just a tiny home and part of a homeless encampment. A lot of the boats they are talking about don't run, they aren't watertight anymore, and as we saw, they can take on water and sink or the anchor can break, and they are pushed into docks and stuff, because they simply don't run anymore, no way of avoiding objects or other boats should something happen, and then they cause damage, and of course, they don't carry any insurance in case that does happen, they aren't registered, etc. It sucks to lose a home, but, if you are going to live in a boat on the water, you need to keep it operational, and the reason these are scrapped and etc is because they aren't, and they have literally become a danger. . It's like any home, if you don't take care of it, and keep up with the maintenance, then it is going to get condemned and you are going to get booted out, most of these are condemned homes, they just happen to be on the water, and they are unfortunately beyond repair in most cases. Like I said, it is sad, but it is their fault, if they kept up with the maintenance, they would be all good, and it's not the money, I know a lot of people that love boats and would gladly help out others just for the fun of working on a boat. For whatever reason, they just let it go, and it went too far.

How to monitor the depth so I don't hit something and take on water. Hell, just keeping it fueled up and livable day to day. You'd need a special type of person to be able to do that life. As someone who lived aboard a sailboat from NYC and north up the coast-mind you a very pretty one that we kept in great shape and could just about blend in with the “yachts” of the upper class-the creative tactics we’ve encountered from cities, marinas, and parks to make sustainable and responsible living aboard impossible is really staggering. The liveaboard community is incredibly diverse, resourceful, and low impact-I’d take their company any day. But because we take nothing from and “contribute nothing” to the capitalist machine that funds most waterfronts, we’ve been recast as a nuisance. One more tragedy amongst many 🙄
go to Cuba or Venezuela you'll be happy with their non-capitalistic societies. Or maybe N.Korea is more your taste.

@@MrHavokman not unless you’re the Brady Bunch. Live-in housekeepers are pretty rare. If it pleases you, though, swap “gardener” or “handyman” or “caterer” or “house painter” for “housekeeper” in my original statement. It’s the same sentiment.
@@ifckdurdad I do handy man work for wealthy clients and can charge more than if I were in a poorer area. I see your point but there will always be someone willing to make money if the millionaire wants their house maintained. Charging for travel is pretty normal to cover costs.

So sad... most of the "legal" boats sit empty and most houses on the water are vacation homes for the rich... this is simply a disgusting example of social inequality at its finest. There are so many better options than just crushing someones home.

It's not social inequality- it's government and politicians who can't just leave people alone.
Well you have to put your emotions aside and realize that removing these people from the water front helps prevent shanty towns from forming in the area hence which cause a reduction of property values. These rich people that many bash on many of them worked hard for their assets and pay horrendous amounts of various taxes so in a way it's just. I know things can seem unfair but it's justified in my view.

Your fear of homeless encampments (shanty towns) bears witness to long term failure of government policies to properly manage the situation. Ye I get it you don't like them, most don't. Pretty ironic that the harbor master and their policies are literally creating more homeless encampments on land.

Maritime law is different than law of the land. Also those waters aren’t owned by the town. It’s federal water. The 72 hour “rule” is an unconstitutional city ordinance that doesn’t have jurisdiction over the water
My wife and I lived in our sailboat there for a while. Met some amazing people with amazing stories. We were getting our boat ready to sail south. We were treated very different because we were anchor outs. The police threatened us. Everyone of the anchor outs were great though. We would hang out with them at the church or at the coffee shop. Many were working jobs and coming back to their boat. The county made it very difficult for everyone to live out there. Shut down all the docks except one. Over 100 boats and only 1 tiny dinghy dock. Fun. The harbormaster was not very liked. He got many boats destroyed. That’s what the county was paying him to do. Many lost their homes and lived in tents. Even kids. I know everyone that was interviewed. Amazing people! Miss this place so much. A strange balance between very rich and very poor.
People wouldn't lose their homes if they were still able to function as boats and move around.

@@complex3704 That's what they keep missing here. It's pretty standard in maritime law not to have a nuisance out in a harbor. If these things can't move under their own power they are nuisances. If they still worked like real boats they could move it around every 72 hours.

I lived in a community that was split into rich, middle class and poor. I remember being invited to a friends and their family was “going out on the yacht.”
We didn’t go anywhere, just stayed tied to the dock. They pay 500 a month to have these boats “docked.” They never take them out, they don’t take trips, nothing. I was middle class and went fishing regularly. I remember asking where they went and the families and yacht owners would almost get angry or offended. Years they would pay to have boats in during the summer and out stored in the winter. What a wasted. Easily 200+ high end Luxury boats that only moved by the wake of charted fishing boats.
I hate rich boat owners with a burning passion, because even when they do use their boat they have no idea how. They have no respect at all for others who are out at sea.
It's because the fuel for those yacht are so expensive. Plus the upkeep if you use it etc. They don't want to let go of the money for it to USE, it's just to sit there like a usable prop to take photos on, and tell freinds, strangers "ah yes that's my yatch, we go fishing off it and swim, party" just to make folks jelous. They honestly can't affford to really DO anything with it other than bragging rights. Nothing more.
Haha. Yup. I know a marina just like that. They have some pretty cool parties during the summer tho.
They don’t know how to navigate their ship !!! Lol ! Losers !!! My boyfriend has a little bass fishing boat that we have fun in ! The motor blew up .. 9 thousand dollar motor .. during Covid .. he watched UTube videos and taught himself to repair his motor ., cost was 2000.00 part found on line (-; we just went kayaking a lot more until he made the repair ! Poor and smart .
It is wierd. I'm in Michigan. All boat owner's want to do is dock on the beach just to be seen by other people. I fish offshore and it pisses me off that they always want to get in the way. Just so we have to see them. Nevermind they are cutting our fishing lines or illegally too close to the fishing pier.
The millionaire being interviewed was extremely smart, collected and in my opinion empathetic. His views were well informed, sound and not only coming from a place of understanding, but an obvious understanding of how a capitalistic society unfortunately works. In my opinion, capitalism is not perfect, and it is often exploited by those who come from wealth, as it is easier to create wealth when beginning from a place of wealth, it's the least egregiously exploited economic ideology, but with that being said it's really difficult to determine for those felons who will and will not repeat again, leaving either of the two in a very difficult to recover situation, but this will be a problem no matter what ideology is in place.

When the dude whose boat got crushed and he goes and visits it and sees his grandmother’s photos, I started crying. How could they not even give these people at least a heads up about demolishing their boat, their home? Their possessions, possibly even living things on the boat like kids and pets. It’s possible they didn’t know that those living things were on the boat and could’ve killed them. This just shows how fucking heartless these rich people are. When that rich guy said he felt bad at the end, I saw right through his lies. You feel bad, yet you still continue to do this to them? You feel bad yet you don’t help them find their feet after what you’ve done? You feel bad yet you don’t solve the root problem that causes some of these people to live in these boats in the first places. You’d do anything to get them out of your sight as you sit in your ivory towers. You’re despicable.

I live in California and this is what they do to homeless people - when they have health problems, etc. - instead of helping them out - no, they want to tear these people with problems down more by stealing all their stuff - maybe just so they have 'crime to fix'. Vagrancy laws are the worst - they make being unemployed, without a home, etc. illegal - and what's unethical and sad. Just sad.

The video shows these anchor outs are stubborn and don't have respect. Do they pay for the wealthy people's homes they break or their own life even? You can see the boats they take are the ones that're damaged and abandoned. I mean it would be nicer for them to repair and resell them - but maybe they don't do it for the liability?
