Mr. P. Explores... The Abandoned United Polish Club (Lorain, Ohio)

  • In perhaps what was one of the saddest explores I have ever done, last spring, we returned to the now abandoned and condemned United Polish Club of Lorain, Ohio to do one last filming session to document the once proud and once very elegant (but forlornly now decaying and crumbling) establishment that once served as a community hotspot for Lorain's Polish neighborhood. A place to eat, dance, relax and spend time with your friends, family and neighbors in a better time is sadly succumbing to the ravages of time, the elements and the local vandals. All throughout you could almost feel the jollity and levity that would have filled the hall on weekends, holidays and special occasions. Weddings, birthdays, dances; this building holds a great deal of love, friendship and amazing stories for those who still try to listen, despite the condition the building is in. The bar itself has been known for insanely interesting tales in its infamous history; spouses met over drinks, friendships made, tales told. We hope that someone will be able to rescue it and re-establish it somewhere else at some point so that its legends live on and so that new stories and memories can be made along its wooden, glossy shine! Our initial explore photos garnished an amazing response of stories and memories; truly this was a very special place for so many. If you happen to have our own memories of this once-fantastic and special place, please feel free to share them in the comments below; tell us your experiences at the UPC! Meanwhile, take one last tour of the old club and reminisce; rumor is circulating that the city is looking to demolish it in the near future. No matter what may happen however, the UPC will live on in Lorain history and in the memories of hundreds who once danced, drank and enjoyed their free time there!

My grandmother passed away today… she was born in 1934 and would tell us stories all the time about the polish club. This is where she married my Grandfather. This was in the backyard of her childhood home. She used to get her father a glass of 3.2 beer growing up. While it is in desolate shape it makes me so happy to see that the place she told me so many stories about really exists and is still there. I cant thank you enough for this video.

The smooth camera work (steady cam?) really puts you right there! A haunting look at a lost and forgotten place...

Thanks! Done with a Zhiyun Smooth-Q stabilizer. So much better than the rickety stuff without it! This place was a hopping joint back in the day...

Thank you so much for this...when I was a child we drove past this club every Sunday after visiting my grandparents...there was music, glasses clinking, laughter, all taking place behind glass block windows which made it seem mysterious to a kid...this vid is a testimony to what happened to Lorain in general after the opening of the Midway Mall in 1967 which decimated the Broadway of my youth to which it never recovered...long live the Tivoli theater!!!

I do too. There had been a fire in the office area last we were there, so I imagine it would cost quite a bit to bring it back to its former glory. I think its been condemned by the City of Lorain. :(
