I use an alternative method of self defence in my car here in Australia. In the storage hold in my door I have a sock full of coins. It is heavy enough to give someone a face ache or head ache but if ever I were to be pulled over and searched by the Police my explanation is the coins are for car parking meters or fast food when I drive through a McDonald's. Nothing they can disprove..
Switchblades were associated with youth gang culture in the 1950s, and there were movements to make them illegal. Now many of those laws have been repealed. But people still assume switchblades are illegal.
It's also not quite right to say that there's no difference in the danger between a blade that opens with the push of a button vs folding vs fixed blades--that's in order of decreasing danger...to the person whose blade it is. (I actually have been trying to decide just how I want to tie the lanyard for a knife I sometimes carry while hiking, for emergency needs.)
I tied one containing streetstone (10*10cm granite) and left it hanging in the city. It was gone the next day. But I am not sure it counts as street art. However, the pavement has a lot of these stones. Intifada ammunition. Great upload thx!
Monkey fist became legal here in the Great State of TEXAS a few years ago, along with brass knuckles, black jacks and slap jacks. But if you run into a Jerk Cop he/she can really screw up your day having any of them...
One slight correction about Canadian weapon law: It would not become illegal when used for self defense. Technically, defending yourself with reasonable force, even with a weapon, is not illegal, but the laws are vague and open to interpretation. It is illegal to carry an object with the intent to use it as a weapon, even as self defense, but not illegal to use an object to defend yourself. I can carry a pocket knife with the intent to open blister packages, and even use it for self defense. Although, proving self defense, especially with a knife, is difficult, and peoples ideas of reasonable force vary wildly.
Yeah I think in my video I stated that "carrying anything for the purpose of self-defense is illegal" so you could obviously carry a knife for utility and that would be legal. Also, I'm not sure about this part so don't quote me, but I recall something about only being able to use equal amounts of force for self defense. So if your attacker is punching you, but you pull your knife on them that is illegal. But if they have a knife and then you pull your knife, it's legal. Again, I could be wrong, but I recall hearing something ridiculous like that. 🤷♂
Here in the great white north none of those things are necessary because fearless leader proclaimed in the house of commons recently "we will protect Canadians" regarding the firearms ban.

With something like a monkey's fist, I think it more comes down to intent. If it's the size of a marble, and the length is short, it's pretty clear you're not aiming to take someone's head off with it. lol. In Oregon any sort of spring assisted knife is illegal yet I could legally walk down the street with a sword on my back because it's a fixed blade. Spring assisted includes switchblades, stilettos, OTFs, and even flipper tabs if they open with a spring to help it.
It seems like you could just tell the police you use it for camping, if you have a place to tie off a bit of rope to it, it is genuinely useful for getting a rope around a high tree branch, in fact that use case seems more plausible than self-defense to me. as long as you didn't actually use it for self-defense, it would be very hard for a court to prove intent.
Sorry about being Canadian and having no defense rights. I carry a pistol and a decent size knife daily and it's 100% legal here where I live in the US.
