Jason Mewes (Jay) went on such a massive bender while living in LA (mostly heroin by the end, I think it was) that he allegedly nearly died when the couch he'd passed out on caught fire. He realised after this he should face the music back home in NJ where there were warrants for his arrest, which lead to the famous car chase he refers to in the movie. So it was kind of autobiographical. He ended up in rehab for 6 months and it stuck for a few years, which was long enough to get Clerks 2 completed.
He relapsed in '09 after an injury caused him to go on pain meds, got clean and has been ever since 2010.

Yeah, and I'm trying to word this so as not to spoil anything in case Ashleigh reads it..... especially those of us who have walked the path Dante did in that movie. I'm being 100% real here: I do not cry during movies because I know they are fiction. However, "Dragonheart" from the 1990s got me to tear up at the end. Only one other movie has brought actual tears to my eyes in my 57 years on this planet, and that's Clerks III. I had hoped to see it in theaters, but life happened and I couldn't go. After watching it at home the day it went "Live" on iTunes.... I wrote an open letter to Kevin Smith via Facebook that called him an asshole and praised the movie. I felt the praise was deserved, but he was an asshole for writing a story that caused me to cry while watching it.
I know this is below the "Click for More" button, so I'll say it now: I was widowed in 2006. My wife died from Ovarian Cancer. She had promised to send me someone when the time was right. Three years later, she did. I've been married to my second wife since 2011. Want to hear the kicker? My second wife was born with a congenital heart defect. She had open heart surgery in 2020 right before the pandemic hit. So, you can imagine how Clerks III hit me on multiple plot points.

The music Jay, Bob, and Randall sing to Elias is from KING DIAMOND. King's music is also in the beginning of the movie when Jay and Silent Bob are introduced, as well as the "Demonic" music they play when Beck and Dante are dancing on the Roof.

Randall Graves and me are connected on a deep spiritual level. Jeff Anderson is a very interesting and hilarious guy. He was upset with Kevin Smith for many years regarding compensation from the success of "Clerks", and Jeff refused to film this sequel. The two have since patched up their relationship (obviously). However, it was Jeff Anderson, who again delayed the making of the 3rd movie; but for artistic reasons. Kevin Smith has stated he was glad Jeff convinced him not to do it, because Kevin's heart attack changed the movie he wanted Clerks 3 to be. There are a couple of smodcasts with Kevin Smith and Jeff Anderson, and they are well worth seeking out for fans (Jeff and Kevin's stories about making the first film are S-tier podcasting). Jeff Anderson also met and briefly married his "Clerks" co-star Lisa Spoonauer (Caitlen Bree). They were divorced a year later. He since remarried and lives a quiet life on a secluded mountain somewhere lol. I don't know where, and I don't think he has told anyone besides his wife. While I understand why people might not like the crude nature of this film; I can only understate how much I love this film and what it means to me. It's a movie that serves as a reminder of a really wonderful time in my life. Thanks for this one.

There was a TV series called Comic Book Men, basically like Pawn Stars set in a comic book store called "Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash" which is owned by Kevin Smith. Some fun trivia. The suspicion of mischief charge that Jay talks about actually happened and is the reason Jason Mews got clean. The song they were singing was by the band King Diamond, look him up. Dantes fiancé is Jennifer Schwalbach, she was in J&SB Strike Back, and is Kevin's wife in real life. The little girl in the restaurant window that Dante sees in the window pre donkey scene is Harley Quinn Smith, Kevin and Jens daughter. She also played baby Bob in J&SB Strike back. And the milk lady at the end is Kevin's mom, she was in the first Clerks as well.

When you mentioned turning 30, I immediately thought of the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” which was a comedy that premiered in 1970. It was a groundbreaking show as it was about a single 30 year old & life as it really was. Mary worked in a small tv station in Minneapolis as a news associate producer…their anchorman was an idiot who wanted to be like Walter Cronkite. Cronkite was one of the most revered news anchors ever. In one of the first episodes, Mary comes home the next morning…big deal as back then as women on tv didn’t have premarital sex…or take birth control. It had Mr. Grant get divorced…& later deal with his ex remarrying. There was Ted’s health scare plus one of the best episodes ever written: Chuckles Bites the Dust. Chuckles was the morning kids’ show clown. It dealt with society’s image of beauty with the character of Rhoda (Mary’s best friend) deal with weight as she was “chunky.” In the season 4 episode that introduced Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens, the Happy Homemaker host, Mary’s friend & landlord, Phyllis, dealt with infidelity as her husband had an affair with Sue Ann…a man-eating, passive-aggressive Martha Stewart. It dealt with prejudice (anti-semitism), freedom of the press, & equal pay. It won 29 Emmys & nominated for 38 more. You can find it on Hulu or on the Mary Tyler Moore channel on UA-cam. So if you ever get a chance, you should check it out.

I fell asleep for a bit after waking up early, but I'm pumped to be here for this one.
This was a big culmination for you, not just having watched the VA movies but the LotR ones, too, because you laughed hard at that bit.

Also - every bit of Randall's screed against the Rings trilogy is solid.

Rosario Dawson is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! She’s the reason I watched this movie in the first place. I think Dogma is the best Kevin Smith movie.

That opening reminds me of the day part of the roof caved in at our local CVS. We'd been having torrential rainfall for days. They were vacuuming the water out. I went across the street to the Walgreens and asked the clerk if she knew about CVS. She said no, adding "So that's why we've had so many customers this morning."
