Definitely my favorite Sandler flick, & Carl was a big part of why! Used to deliver to him at home, once in a while, & he was always so nice/cool, & we even shared a chuckle or two, especially one in particular, when he was blaming his, “linebacker’s hands”, as he had difficulty getting papers back into the manilla envelope! I commented that, “At least you’re not still dealing with that wooden one!”, & he definitely got a kick out of that! I will miss him. R. I. P Carl Weathers.
Arnold Palmer was one of the greatest golfers, a legend in his own time. One under par is called a birdie. Two under par is called an eagle. Three under par is a double eagle or albatross. One over par is called a bogey. Two over par is called a double bogey. Three over par is a triple bogey. The fellow who is in several scenes shaking his head at Happy's outbursts was played by Lee Trevino, one of the greatest golfers of all time. Trevino, who is 89 years of age, is retired from the game and lives in Florida.
@dragonweyr44 It DOES count as a stroke because he had the intention of hitting the ball. If he was taking an obvious practice swing, he didn't have the intention of hitting the ball, then it wouldn't count as a stroke.
When Carl Weathers did goofy roles, he went properly goofy! The wooden hand always cracks me up. Arrested Development may well be his funiest one since he's playing himself in that.
"Baby, you've got a stew going!" It's funny, I just read after he passed, when the Arrested Development folks first approached him they were nervous, and were planning on just doing Rocky references, basically... but because of the nerves they didn't pitch it, and it's a good thing, because Carl was like, "I'd love to, but just as long as it's going to be something other than a bunch of Rocky references" and he essentially pitched what his "character" would be. And, of course, it was the purest of comdy gold.
The giant man who plays his former boss is Richard Kiel. A 221 cm tall actor who is best known for playing Jaws (a henchman with iron teeth) in two James Bond films, "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977) and "Moonraker" (1979). People who have met him say that in real life he was one of the most soft-spoken, friendly, warm people imaginable. In 1992, he suffered a severe head injury in a car accident, which impacted his balance. Consequently, he had to rely on a cane for support (as seen in this movie), and later in life a wheelchair or a scooter.
I was trying to think of which one to recommend and all I could think of was Billy Madison. I know she'd be thrown off by that one if it were her next Adam Sandler experience (although one to watch eventually when she finds Sandler worth watching), but Waterboy is a MUST watch.
You really need to watch the wedding singer. It's totally an 80s flick (made later) My daughter lives in Michigan and when we call each other we start singing songs from the movie.
Double bogey is when you make it in the hole 2 shots over what is standard for the hole. Bogey is one shot over. Par is breaking even. Birdie is one under par. Two under is an eagle. If you make it in the hole in one shot that is an Ace, more commonly known as the "hole in one". If your ball goes into a water hazard or is lost in tall grass and you cannot find it you take a drop and an extra stroke added to your score. A drop is when you take another ball and stand approximately close to where your ball was lost and drop the new ball over your shoulder. You then play the new ball from where it dropped as if you never lost your ball. A standard golf course has 18 holes. The first 9 holes are referred to as front 9 and the second 9 holes are referred to as back 9. As in going out and then coming back to the club house. They ask the gallery "spectators" to remain quiet while a golfer is making a shot to not break the concentration of the golfer. Golf is not just going out and hitting a ball around, well, yeah, it mostly is but it takes some serious concentration to plan each shot and then make it happen, especially when putting. You have to read the green and notice how the green lays out such as if it slopes one direction or another, wet, dry, windy. These are all factors that affect how the ball will roll and if you make the shot.
Isn't there a term for 3 under par. I thought it was an albatross, or a double eagle , or am I wrong? Good job on the quick explanation of the rules. Spot on man.

I'm not a crazy huge Sandler fan, but I would throw out there that its possible that you could guess some of the film because some parts of Sandlers films have become part of pop culture, especially within certain friend groups. You may have been quoting or mimicking Sandler films for years and just didn't know it.
2:02 man confusing Lynyrd Skynyrd with the Beatles hurts. I love Skynyrd but hate the Beatles. 29:04 yes it does and I’ve been looking for a shirt like that for myself ever since I saw it. I know many people didn’t like it, but The Waterboy is a pretty good Adam Sandler film with a great soundtrack and a lot of Cajun culture (though Farmer Fran stole that show for me). Something About Mary isn't an Adam Sandler movie. It's a Farrelly Brothers movie. Also that opening song is 'Tuesdays gone' by Lynyrd Skynyrd, not the Beatles.
Something About Mary was a Ben Stiller movie, not Adam Sandler Anyone else getting that loud music at the beginning? Ben Stiller revises this character in the Adam Sandler movie Hubie Halloween in 2020 Chubs returned in Little Nicky as an angel/ golf pro If you don't touch the ball, I don't think it counts The girl in this movie is Julie Bowen from Modern Family His caddy is Allen Covert, one of his best friends who is in all of his movies The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams was a tv series in the 1970s about a mountain Man, his two friends and his pet grizzly bear named Ben set in the 1800s
26:53 I'm no golfer but I have family that used to play. if I recall correctly par is the expected amount of swings to get to the hole, if you're 1 above par it's a bogey (also double- and triple- for +2 and +3), if you're -1 (1 below par) you have a birdie, -2 is an eagle -3 is an albatross, -4 would be a Condor and -5 is an Ostrich. Hole in one is always a "hole in one" or "Ace" instead of "birdie" or "eagle" etc. Both of them at that point were 4 strokes below par for the parts of the 18 hole course they had played. A par 4 hole means an expert golfer would be expected to need 4 strokes to get from the tee-off to the hole and it's mostly determined by the distance so you can see how Happys long game would give him a big advantage but if he can't putt to save his life that's just a temporary advantage.
A couple of things, Ashleigh: 1) If you want more Carl Weathers, Action Jackson is a must-watch; 2) Adam Sandler has some pretty legit dramatic chops, as evidenced by films like Reign Over Me where he plays a widower who lost his wife and children in 9/11.
Whaaat in the world is with today's intro? Mixing up Ben Stiller with Adam Sandler and then several totally out of place ukulele interjections lol that was great 😂
0:30 - Uuuh...what's going on? 1:11- Hey, Ash, I think someone added a music track to your social media crawler. 3:36 - I haven't enjoyed Subway nearly as much since they changed the honey mustard. 6:55 - BRILLIANT observation, Ashleigh!! 9:58 - Stroke names are based on the relationship to Par. Par is the number of strokes the designers of the hole think a decent golfer can make it in. If you're one under par it's a Birdie, two under is an Eagle. One MORE than par is a Bogie, two over is a Double-Bogie. On a related note, a golfer's 'handicap' is the number of points he needs to adjust his score on average to meet par. For example, if the total Par for an 18 hole course is 60 and a golfer averages around 68, his Handicap is 8. An average handicap (in 2021) is 16 for men and 28 for women. 10:00 - Time to put balls in holes. 11:16 - It's not about par here. This is a tournament. It's about who has the lowest score. Despite his abysmal short game, Happy's long drives and hole-in-ones have gotten him a 4-stroke lead over the guy in second. Like Chubbs said, he just needs to get it in in 4 strokes or less to keep the lead and win the tournament. Also, I just noticed that I don't thing Happy's score card (on the board behind him) matches the gameplay we've seen. 15:18 - I've never actively watched golf, but I'm pretty sure in tournaments the competitors are paired off into groups of two or three and released in stages, that way they don't end up bunching up if someone ends up taking a while. So Group 1 will tee off at, for example, 9 am, Group 2 at 9:30, etc. Incidentally, 'playing through' is when a slower group lets a quicker group go ahead. 17:10 - Traditionally, golfers don't want a lot of noise on the course so they can concentrate on their shots. Part of Happy's appeal is that he encourages a bit of 'mob energy', which makes the generally boring sport more exciting. 21:53 -You think that was shocking, wait 'till you see what happens next! 23:08 - Those things are real, too. You do something good for Subway, they WILL give you a card like that. 25:52 - 'The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams' was a 1974 movie about a man who went to live in the woods after being wrongfully accused of murder. It was a big hit in it's day, but almost nobody today would know it. 31:52 - Adam Sandler is generally one of those 'love him or hate him' actors. He's most famous for his stuff from the 90s and '00ies, which is mostly like this movie. His films also tend to be rather hit-or-miss, so you need to be careful there. He does have some range, though, and a number of his more recent movies have been serious films and VERY good. If you're only going to give him as a WHOLE one more chance, you should watch his best film, Uncut Gems from 2019. If you want to give Adam Sandler as he's best known another chance, I suggest Mr. Deeds or The Longest Yard (I have a special connection to that one).
When Happy jokes with Chubbs about playing other sports like football and Chubbs says it's too dangerous, it's played for laughs a bit because Carl Weathers actually did play Pro Football for a time with the Oakland Raiders.
@16:52; that's Jack O'Halloran. He also plays Emil Muzz in the 1987 Dragnet with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd. The song they skate to is "My Endless Love" by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.
When you're putting on a green with other people, after you hit your ball, you replace it with a ball marker so that other people can take their shots without having to worry about bumping into your ball on accident. In golf - at least in putting - other people's balls aren't really meant to be "in play" when someone's taking their shot. I think you're also generally allowed to move any sort of leaves or twigs that might be in the pathway to the hole. A ball marker is usually a small, thin disc so that if someone else's ball rolls over it, it hopefully won't affect the direction of travel too much. I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure a coin is perfectly allowable to be used as a ball marker - though maybe not in professional games.
Richard Kiel is gigantic and intimidating, which is why he was a recurring character in James Bond movies, but his health was clearly suffering here after a car accident he had. You can see that he's always leaning on a nearby person or a hidden cane, and they really had to fake the chase scene at the end. He had a career going back to the original Twilight Zone in arguably one of its most famous episodes, "To Serve Man." From what I've heard, he was an awesome person.
@12:20, Little tidbit on the landscaping "joke." My grandmother has been a landscaper for the majority of my life. Her and my grandpa (died 2022) started their own landscaping business upon declaring retirement. Even at 80-years-old she's still doing it. That woman's a freak of nature, in the best way possible. Also, if you're going to try one more Adam Sandler film, I definitely suggest "The Wedding Singer." It's honestly the perfect Sandler film because while it does have his usual goofy comedy, it also shows some of his dramatic acting he's capable of as he has done some serious roles in his career.
You have to give Adam Sandler as many chances as it takes. His catalog of movies is one of thee most diverse, large and enjoyable of any top movie star. There is also a Sandlerverse of movies that you shouldn't let yourself miss out on. One movie in the Sandlerverse that Adam was not in was Grandma's Boy that's definitely being up there for me
Adam Sandler is fantastic in PUNCH DRUNK LOVE (2002) - It's more of a drama-dy (And directed by the director of Magnolia and Boogie Nights, among many others), but its kind of an answer to his character in this one in a strange way and has lots of comedic actor cameos in less than comedic roles.

I think she has seen it, at the beginning when she thought Adam Sandler was in Something About Mary I think she meant Wedding Singer
@@rossrobertson674 the only other Sandler movie she has seen is 50 first dates. I think she just mixed up Sandler with Stiller.

If you liked this soundtrack, just wait for The Wedding Singer!
I owned the soundtrack on cd, it was two discs and every track was perfect
I like Little Nicky's soundtrack better but Adam Sandler movies normally had great soundtracks.
Or even Billy Madison
One of my favorite movies. The last song Adam sings in the plane a friend of mine used to do a piano bar thing and he would do that at the end. My daughter and i were the only ones to sing along with him

"Doing the Bull Dance. Feeling the flow," was something my friends and I said for a long time after this. Basically, today it would be "Look at him, he's living his best life."
5:33 That’s Ben Stiller, he’s a great director. I don’t know if you’ve seen Tropic Thunder, Zoolander or even The Cable guy (starring Jim Carrey) but you should check them out.

No to Cable Guy. That movie was awful. The other two though, classic.
Zoolander is genuinely awful. A true turd of a film.

Lee Trevino, the guy that said Grizzly Adams did have a beard, is one of only four players to twice win the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship.

I commented that, “At least you’re not still dealing with that wooden one!”, & he definitely got a kick out of that! I will miss him. R. I. P Carl Weathers.
Arnold Palmer was one of the greatest golfers, a legend in his own time.

In the scene where he swings and misses the ball, that doesn't count against him because he didn't touch the ball, right?
@@dragonweyr44I believe so.
@dragonweyr44 It DOES count as a stroke because he had the intention of hitting the ball. If he was taking an obvious practice swing, he didn't have the intention of hitting the ball, then it wouldn't count as a stroke.

Yup I think she'd love the Wedding Singer too! And the soundtrack is amazing!
@@JeffKelly03And that makes me wonder if Carl brought the whole alligator subplot to this. Sounds like something he would do

Also played opposite Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider......medium part
Also played in the original Longest Yard ( Burt Reynolds)
Whats with the odd music at the beginning 🤔 ?? Just Curious .

My daughter lives in Michigan and when we call each other we start singing songs from the movie.

The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy are a couple other Adam Sandler movies that I like.

Something About Mary was not Adam Sandler, but Ben Stiller. Who by coincidence does play a small part in this.
RIP Carl Weathers….. hope you and that alligator are having a good time up in heaven
When my boss mentioned he passed one of the first things that came to mind was "I guess that alligator finally finished the job..."
He's a dance instructor in heaven
And Abe Lincoln... because, reasons?
When Happy jokes with Chubbs about playing other sports like football and Chubbs says it's too dangerous, it's played for laughs a bit because Carl Weathers actually did play Pro Football for a time with the Oakland Raiders.
16:53
The actor that played Happy's former boss is Richard Kiel, who's most notable for the James Bond villain "Jaws"
The fact that you mentioned the FCC at 14:28 made my day! I enjoyed the film with you, Ashleigh!
@16:52; that's Jack O'Halloran. He also plays Emil Muzz in the 1987 Dragnet with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd.
The song they skate to is "My Endless Love" by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.
The Bob Barker fight makes it 4 stars all by itself 😊
Markers can be anything small. For example many golf gloves have a small button that you can pull off to use as a marker.
