@@imandan1966 It's not necessary to discredit one artist just to prove that another artist is great. Chris and Freddie are both pure legends. If you like the opera rock style you might prefer Freddie over Chris, if you're looking for a heavier style but also for pure emotion you will probably lean towards Chris. Myles Kennedy is one of the greatest rock artists of our time. I've seen him live a couple of times and even met him shortly (most gentle guy), it's nothing but ridiculous to call him an average guitar player. In fact, his skills are quite close to Tremonti's ... and Tremonti's skills are insane. When Kennedy and Tremonti do their guitar solo battles, Kennedy's ideas are often more to my taste while both show absolutely perfect techniques.
@@imandan1966 Did I say you said Cornell and Mercury are not legends? Maybe you should read both comments again as you seem to have forgotten that the one you discredited was Myles Kennedy and not Freddie.
The problem with soundgarden was that they were always too cerebral for their genre. Vedder was good at moaning and groaning, Kurt was a master of self deprivation and metaphorical irony, Layne and Jerry were dark as fuck, but then there's Chris. He was simultaneously none of those, but above it. He was a 70s rock singer with an excellent vocabulary and above average intelligence. It's volatile, even listening to him speak.
Man, that was an insightful comment. I really wish that your comment was the introductory paragraph to a 5 or 7 page paper. I know there's a lot more there than just that I'll let you made so I appreciate you putting some great thought into that for our benefit. With interviews like this and comments like yours really takes the sting well... Let's just say it takes some of the sting away from his death and my morning of his death. I never thought we'd lose Chris.. I knew he avoided the drugs that did so many others who knew this whole time he was completely and utterly depressed... Unfortunately it is a feeling I am growing more accustomed to with éach passing day
Soundgarden has always been underrated and the band deserves so much more acclaim. It was an amazing time to be alive and lucky to experience the Seattle explosion in the early nineties. Music today is regurgitated garbage. RIP CHRIS CORNELL
soundgarden are absolutely not underrated they are literally in the big seattle four with nirvana, pearl jam, and alice in chains. superunknown is relevant to this day. maybe they're not as much of a household name as nirvana, but people know of or have listened to soundgarden, especially black hole sun. the word you're looking for seems more like UNDERAPPRECIATED, which is true. but definitely not under rated

First concert ever went to was Soundgarden/ Skid Row at Fox theater in Saint louis. A Bit of a weird grouping, but liked both bands and I believe it was pre grunge explosion. It was early 1990's.
I have to add my name to the list of those who regret missing out. What stings even more is im in Michigan and we all know his last show, and last night on earth was in Detroit. I had a chance to go, my co-worker went, and I had always respected soundgarden and thought they would be a killer show. I wonder if more of us 'fan's bought tickets to every tour, he would have been less depressed? I couldn't help but feel like playing smaller, crappy venus in Detroit must have been hard after playing arenas in the 90s and being so huge. Maybe he felt like he had peaked, been there/done that, and got too bored. Looking out at a crowd of aging 90s kids in dirty dingy venues took it's toll
He became the blueprint, of how rockers answer interviewers ?'s today. He also gives the cool ambiance and great insight of someone who actually gave us (w/out overproduced songs) the closest creation that came from his heart.
I listen to him every day. I’m a 45 year old drummer and appreciate his work more now but he set the tone for my youth. He connected with your soul in a way no one could. I can’t wrap my mind around that he is gone.
I started listening to soundgarden just recently and Chris his voice is what reeled me in. After that I fell hard. I am so heartbroken about what happened. I know depression all to well and its tough especially when your alone at times with only your thoughts. I wish I wouldve started listening sooner. And maybe been able to write him amd tell him how beautiful of a person he is and how loved he is even more. R.I.P Chris
Same, I’ve only recently gotten *really* into all Chris’ work - solo or otherwise, and my god does it hurt, that I won’t ever get to see him live or to tell him how grateful we all are for everything he did
Brings me to tears seeing one of the greatest of all time and still feeling like he was murdered and didn’t commit suicide. I met Chris in 2007. We shared a great hug and I thanked him sincerely for all of the amazing music. He was a gentleman, he was tall and illustrious and a beautiful man. His appreciation for me as a dude that was in total fanboy mode was endearing. Even though I felt silly for geeking out so hard , he didn’t make it awkward. He was an absolute gem. I still miss his musical presence every day and he is still one of my biggest influences in rock! We love you Chris. Your mark still leaves its’ indelible stamp on all of us true fans of Rock-N-Roll. You’re one of the best to ever do it!!!!🤘🏻 I say that from my soul. Wherever your soul is... I love you brother and I thank you! Ps: that hug we shared was probably the coolest moment of my life! A funny memory when I think of Superunknown is of this creep that worked with me at the time. I'd listen to a rock station every day and Black Hole Sun was playing. The guy comes walking by and goes "PFFT! I hate that shit. Soundgarden and Pearl Jam BOTH suck!". Fast forward a few days later>>> Hunger Strike is playing and the same idiot says "Man, I love that Temple Of The Dog, Great band!". So I look at him wondering if he's joking or not. I ask just to make sure 'You say that you hate Soundgarden and Pearl Jam but yet you like Temple Of The Dog'. He looks confused and says "Yeah, Why?" I started laughing and told him to come over and sit down. I had some explaining to do. LMAO
Ahahahaha! that stuff happens All the time. , or they hate the way he sings and they ask if you've heard audioslave and say " now this guy is a real badass!, unlike soundgarden singer...." things that make ya go hmmmm ...then pow! , bip, pop....zing! Lol
LOL, I had something similar happen..this jerk was saying Chris Cornell, & Eddie Vedder were sooo overrated..that they probably used autotune, blah,blah,blah...then Hunger Strike .., he is going on & on & on...Well, I never told him ..should have..but ,I'm sure he made a complete arse of himself down the road..😂😂😂
@@sandipage9525 there was no autotune til the late 90s and for general people to know about it was in 2000s, not many artists were using it even then so for him to know about autotune before it was invented.....maybe not such a creep.
It's a shame that "Vitalogy" & "In Utero" were ultimately more successful than "Superunknown". They're both good records, but neither can touch "Superunknown".
dirtyfacelifttool51 I've had that same argument. AND I believe Superunknown is one of the few albums that are better than Dirt. And even the worst Soundgarden song is still better than EVERY Nirvana song put together.
There were only 3 songs on Superunknown that never got radio play and there are 15 songs total on that album. it is one of the most played albums in history by trackplay standards. It was in the top 5 of major charts for 7 different countries 3 of them hitting number 1. 3XPlatinum in Canada and 5xPlatinum in the US. 9+million albums sold worldwide. Vitalogy had more success overseas on charts, but with smaller sales numbers, it only hit 76 on the Billboard 200 where Superunknown hit #1. It also sold less worldwide though sold similarly in volume in the US. InUtero did about the same chart wise, but only sold about 6+million worldwide and had only 3 songs hit radio and only 3 released as major singles (which 2 were on the same single). Nevermind however sold 15+mil with 5 singles and 11 top 5 charts worldwide with 4 #1's. Pearl Jam's Ten sold 15+mil worldwide and only hit number 1 on Poland and internet charts only reaching number 2 on the US200, but really didn't have great charting. Charting = Critic and mainstream acceptance whilst sales = How many people actually cared to buy it. Had Soundgarden released more than 5 singles (like a single for each song that got radio play in it's popular market, they would have sold another couple million probably.Sales aren't in yet for their 20th Anniversary release, but I suspect they will sell quite a bit more in the next 2 years considering Chris Cornell's recent recording associations in the mainstream. It's in my list of top 10 albums of all time. Superunknown is a favorite of mine over Ten and Nevermind, that said, not just because of their popularity, they are all 3 albums you can put on and let repeat over and over without getting tired of. That's when you know an album is a classic and near perfect, because people will listen to the whole story from start to finish. Not many albums are released these days like that and most young people don't understand what that experience is like with all the singles only released and bite sized attention spans.
I saw Soundgarden live on 13th Street on the campus corner in Eugene, Oregon back in the day. I will never forget the vibe. It was fantastic and felt so spontaneous.
Can someone send this interview to Vicky Cornell, in particular the end of the interview when he’s talking in such a nice way about his band mates and how essential is their contribution to the final sound of the band? Thanks
I heard Jeff buckley's singing and he's (was) good, but not nearly as good as Chris Cornell. The others, I've never heard of but I'll check them out to see if they're as good (I doubt it) :D
shymickey6 Never heard of Freddie Mercury? get listening to the second best vocals ever (Cornell 1st). In fairness, Freddies live vocals are pretty much untouchable.
paul morris Oo! I'm intrigued now. I had totally forgotten that I was supposed to be checking out the others anyway. I'll be checking out Freddie Mercury first ;). Which song you suggest?
Freddie was an ultimate showman but his voice....along with Chris Cornell, the most inspiring vocalist, never sang a bum note live and put his heart and soul into it. Enjoy.
His comments at the end explain so much in regards to guitar playing. I've been a guitar player for 30 years and I'm in awe of his playing. Most guitar players don't get it. It isn't difficult to play. It's not blindingly fast. The thing is, Chris wrote riffs that nobody else would, or could write. His timing, his sense of rhythm. All of it is so unique. Hearing him say that he never learned to play the guitar makes so much sense to me now. That's why he doesn't sound like anyone else. He didn't learn how to play like others, he approached it with a clean palette. This man will always be revered for his singing, but IMO, he's the most underrated singer/song writer there is. His lyrics, his guitar playing, the timing and phrasing of it. RIP brother. Thanks for the soundtrack to my life.

His murder just happened. He was onto the child sex trafficking and the private island where they were being held, used, and abused. The people who run that are very powerful and influential and couldn't allow him to expose them. Chris had an organization (nonprofit?) that's purpose is to expose that and enable the authorities to prosecute the people who are involved. After his alleged suicide, he was examined and found to have 9 broken ribs and you don't get that many from a passive hanging. I mean that when you take enough of something to make you pass out and have something around your neck that will not let you go totally limp into a horizontal laying-flat-on-the-floor position. He didn't even have enough Ativan in his system to make him pass out to begin with. There are a number of other clues to go against him committing suicide but he was quickly rushed to be cremated so that no more evidence could get discovered. The evidence that has leaked out will eventually get some of the people involved but not all of them. Sadly, such talent and grace was silenced much too early.

Music is not a competition...
It Came from the Sky his lyrics were amazing, he never ceased to amaze me
Wow, try his TOTD cover War Pigs by BS, it embodies Ozzy's vibe, & more. Band sounds incredible with a heavy full analogy brown sound. Treat.
Couldn't have said it better
That was the great thing, not the problem. That's why they were my favourite of the time.
Underrated? Tens of millions of albums sold and basically a household name.
Kings X was underrated.
Underated??? Hardly!
ENOUGH with the word UNDERATED!! Soundgarden were not and have never been underated (under appreciated) they've been aknowledged for their talent.
@@phnigra111 Completely agree : )
soundgarden are absolutely not underrated they are literally in the big seattle four with nirvana, pearl jam, and alice in chains. superunknown is relevant to this day. maybe they're not as much of a household name as nirvana, but people know of or have listened to soundgarden, especially black hole sun. the word you're looking for seems more like UNDERAPPRECIATED, which is true. but definitely not under rated
I Don't think Chris had any idea just how great he was. Very humble and down to earth. If he was ever getting a complement he would always divert to something or someone else as to why he was so successful. They Don't make them like that anymore... RIP Chris Cornell
Chris was awsome in all those bands and in solo. Both bands were 2 of my favourites bands of alltime. Shine on Chris
I will always regret never seeing him live in Soundgarden or Audioslave or just himself :/
Andrew Vasquez I was lucky to see him with Soundgarden in 2011. Great show. Happy I got to see him perform live.
Saw Soundgarden @Rockville in 2017, one of his last shows... So glad I made the decision!
First concert ever went to was Soundgarden/ Skid Row at Fox theater in Saint louis. A Bit of a weird grouping, but liked both bands and I believe it was pre grunge explosion. It was early 1990's.
Me too😥
I have to add my name to the list of those who regret missing out.
It's weird how Soundgarden and other 90s bands get compared . They were all so different in their own way.
Jennifer Pegg true those comparisons most stop each band is different
I hate it too, soundgarden is no whiny punk band
🤘🏾😢❤️ no one sings like him anymore.
I get what your doing their
Always love to hear Chris give interviews. Always extremely friendly, open, and insightful. I wish all rock stars were like him.
Yeah, he's super cool and well spoken. Very insightful. His personality, way of speaking and mannerisms remind me of Jeff Goldblum for some reason.
You’re one of my biggest heroes and you live on through us. Love you Mr. Cornell
He did commit suicide dude, just accept it. The only person that went into his hotel room was the security guard and he was cleared. This guard tried to save his life, he didn't murder him ok.
@@mikemckay4256 I agree that he was murdered too, but had never spoken about that with anyone. From the start, I thought--“nah-this just not add up-something is stinking here

Shouldn't the title be: "Radio guy never shuts the fuck up, oh, and occasionally Chris Cornell talks, but gets interrupted." ..?
True. Chris is not a fast speaker so they should just let him speak his mind at his pace.
Gene "Bean" Baxster is a radio legend, and responsible for many of the bands you listen to today. If you don't listen to the K&B Show on Itunes, you are really missing out... Just type "KROQ" into the search, and you'll see K&B. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out and giving it a few days. It'll change your life if you are into music. Best.
man... best post I've seen all week.
i clicked on 10 random spots in this video and each time i landed on the radio guy babbling about something... :-/
And then practically insulted him right at the end...
he doesn't seem to be too excited to do this kinda shit but handles it really well

People only do these interviews BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO. (It's in their contracts that they MUST do press etc, to promote product.)
Butt early that’s why😂😂
Kim is perhaps the most underrated rock musician ever. He is brilliant and just not highlighted enough. Chris respected him so much and vice versa.
I think everything that ever happened is underrated so I agree.

Chris looks amazing at his age and i love his singing and talking voice.:-)
Me too, hun.
LMAO
Ahahahaha! that stuff happens
All the time. , or they hate the way he sings and they ask if you've heard audioslave and say " now this guy is a real badass!, unlike soundgarden singer...." things that make ya go hmmmm ...then pow! , bip, pop....zing!
@@sandipage9525
Autotune wasn’t invented until 1997, so I doubt that idiot wouldn’t know that.
@@sandipage9525 there was no autotune til the late 90s and for general people to know about it was in 2000s, not many artists were using it even then so for him to know about autotune before it was invented.....maybe not such a creep.
Oh man it's so good to hear him talk. It's been awhile since I actually heard him speak since he's been gone. Damn we lost another one.
It's a shame that "Vitalogy" & "In Utero" were ultimately more successful than "Superunknown". They're both good records, but neither can touch "Superunknown".
sky sportguy How can an "opinion" be wrong? By it's very definition an opinion is subjective & ambiguous.
dirtyfacelifttool51 I've had that same argument.
***** Thanks for all the info. I'm not worthy of such an informative & thorough response.
dirtyfacelifttool51 I just love music.

Superunknown, and Down On The Upside are masterpieces.

I wish this interview was just done today :(
My all-time favorite male singer and the greatest male voice I've ever heard in my life!
jeff Buckley, John frusciante freddy mercury are up there on my list but it's what ever Ur in to.that's the beauty of music.

Oo!
Enjoy.

Miss this guy. What a loss to music. I still hear his voice when I write songs because he was such an influence
Such an incredible voice silenced. Heartbreaking. R.I.P. Chris
Not really, you can't silence somebody's legacy.
God bless you Chris and your family too. We miss you and thank you for the gifts you left us...

You've left us more memories than most can count
I think his death just happened, not planned or something that he anticipated though it crossed his mind alot probably.
