I think it's because they're getting heavy discounts from Intel. They have an oversupply of chips and are basically selling at cost/at a loss to avoid losing marketshare to AMD. They've basically lost the sever chip war for now and so client (desktop/mobile) is all they got left.

Since they started pushing the limit and innovating with the duo I’ve been almost exclusively Asus. I have to put my money where it matters and a company that takes risks like them is where it’s at!!!! Love them and I hope they continue!!!
Same I bought a Pro Art Studiobook designed so well better battery life still great power my brother got asus parts for his desktop too they really just tend to make some of the best stuff out there no everything they touch but a lot of it is amazing
ASUS innovated with the EEE PC back in the day, and now they are bringing to market their own Steam Deck. They always liked to push the boundaries with great quality hardware, which is why my last two gaming laptops have been from ASUS, and the next one will be as well, whenever I manage to save enough to afford it.
@@BrianZuma I'm considering buy proart studiobook for my heavy creative work such as motion graphics, complex 4k video editing, colour grading and 3D modelling so want to know how has been your experience so far? The power efficiency of the 40 series mobile GPUs is very impressive. The mobile 4080 is as fast as the desktop 3080 in my PC but consumes 200 less watts of power.
Now, the one thing they have to improve for next gen is the **Speakers!!** Both in volume and quality. Headphones is good for watching alone, external sound system is good while at home, but when travelling, the sound is just too low to overpower external noise.
The aesthetic on the laptop body is very appealing especially the RGB lights, I don't mind the thickness of the body. The thinner the device the more difficult to cool the hardware. And it's a DDR 5 memory system, this is ideal for me.
I have one of the old Zephyrus models, and I love its performance but I wish there was something comparable with better build quality. Like if you had an XPS 15 but made it thicker and let ASUS design the cooling and put an rtx 4090 in it. Imagine something like the 16 inch macbook pro, but running windows with a 4090.

damn asus is going crazy with these laptops, the only thing they are missing on is lightweight gaming mice market, they need a viper ultimate and g pro x cometitor
@@tomh1556 i looked it up and its technically good, but it looks like the most boring mouse ive ever seen, kinda strange considering they have all sorts of rgb even on budget mice

I’ve just got the Scar 18! It’s an absolute beast. Over 120fps ultra settings on Cyberpunk, RDR2, Dead Space and MW2/ Warzone. It’s loud on turbo but not hot and quite light considering. QHD screen is lovely
If you worked for ASUS and realized how much it costs to make one of these (production at scale) compared to selling one, you'd understand they are making a killing. They're sold out at a lot of places, and ASUS will produce another batch as orders exceed what they produce. Gone are the days of early 2000's where tech companies produce a bunch of product and then HOPE they sell out. WE are now in the era of digital-hype / marketing, and limited production releases.
I really miss when Dave would review assorted mainstream laptops instead of just premium gaming machines. I used his advice to make a purchase years ago and I just ended up watching his videos after because I found them informative and interesting.
I feel the same. In 2016 I got an DELL Inspiron 7559 after wathcing Dave's video for only $699 USD, and it has bacame the laptop I used for longest time by far--7 years in a row. I just switched to another DELL laptop -- Inspiron 16 Plus recently, since I no longer need a perfomance beast (gaming laptop), but leaning toward a device with good design and reasonable performance to fulfill my working demands.
Tbh work stations are far simpler than gaming set up. But also many people use a gaming device as their work station. For example this laptop you could just skin it black making it look professional. If you want good battery life well it's a fact laptop u either sacrifice battery for power or you don't. Going in between u might get the worst of 2. He's showed how xps are really good and on par with apple devices. Xps is a well known office type which is reviewed not long ago. But yeah moral is, office stations are far easier to build as u as you aren't thinking about watts, motherboard etc etc. It's just 8/16gb ram. I7 13700H. And customise what gpu u want, u can choose an integrated one or like a 4050 if you're a designer or something for about 2k. You don't have to worry/build much with office stations.
Bought a ton of the G15 and G17 laptops for work (dev laptops) and they have a very high failure rate. More than half have board issues after a while. Some after only 6 months, some after 2 years. Always the same issue, power chip failure. The cost/performance is great and they are awesome for a while, but longevity definitely an issue in my experience. Hope that isn't the case with the new generation.
@@amitpower9455 I have been doing procurement for my company for about 11 years and can speak only of my experience, but I will tell you what current policy is. We buy largely high-end machines for the technical team. On the DO NOT BUY list is Gigabyte (horrible build quality, bought 6 that all fell apart due to bad hinges), and MSI (tend to be too thin to cool properly, so they overheat and die early. Also bad hinges on some models). I still get Razers because some senior guys are devoted to them, but of the last 4 we got, 3 had battery bloat so bad it cracked the chassis. Currently trialing some HP units (Omen, Victus), so far so good on that front. HP has had a pretty decent success rate with us. The best laptops for the long term are Alienwares and Dell Precision workstations. They are super expensive, but the Alienwares in particular are built like tanks and have next business day support generally. Never had one fail on me ever. Have an 18 inch Alienware floating around that's been going for the better part of a decade. I have reluctantly had to add ASUS to the ban list recently. Just had a G17 fail after just 4 months.
@@amitpower9455 MSI Raider and Leopard series are pretty good. Don't know if leopard is out yet but usually the internals are very identical to the Raider laptops. Means if you buy a leopard laptop you get great cooling, a Mainboard that can handle overclocking and an overpowered power supply.

I've just ordered the Scar 18, I can't wait. It's arriving tomorrow. I'm finally upgrading my ancient and slow HP Omen laptop from 2017. Thank you for this review!
I remember that using the print screen key was different from using Win+Shift+S but I don't recall what the difference was. But now, I'm noticing that when using the Win+Shift+S shortcut it saves the file in the screenshot folder, something that wasn't happening before. Anyway, I'm not looking to upgrade my laptop because mine it's just a year old but it's always great to know that if someone needs a proper review from a laptop, Dave's channel is the best place to recommend.
I don't care about gaming very much, especially on laptops but i find gaming laptops to be extraordinary values when it comes to mobile workstations uses
I tried to get a strix 18 but all sold out unless you want to pay 3500.00+ from scalpers, lol. So I had to get the asus zephyrus 16 price tag at 3200.00..... I was about to pass until I seen a best buy open box for 2400.00 excellent condition 2tb . Talked to the salesman and he pulled 200.00 more off for a grand total of 2500.00 roughly after tax. Laptop is pristine no scratches and still smells new. Tried it with the new undisputed boxing game ran on (ultra) and battery drained from full to half for a 5 round fight, But it was smooth as eggs. Gonna definitely have it plugged in for that high performance gameplay. My last laptop was an hp omen 18" , 8th gen, and has the aluminum and graphite hard casing outside and around keyboard. This new one is mostly plastic and rgb keyboard only. Its smaller but more portable, big things come in small package.
The higher end version is actually called Strix SCAR 18 and not Strix SCAR G18 at 0:38 . And the G18 does not embedd the RTX 4080 but a RTX 4070 maximum 0:58. But apart from that, great video !
The M16 has me really intrigued. I'm currently running a first generation G14 that I preordered and it's serving me well, but I really want something with more performance and a bigger screen. All the upgrades this year sound really really good, but I hope they don't go too crazy with the pricing. Also, I'm a little hesitant because of the battery performance with the Intel processor. Only time will tell I guess
You're right. It seems Intel's battery life still can't touch AMD Ryzen 7000, which no brand seems to be putting into 16/18 inch laptops (apart from Dell/Alienware).
M16 4090 is less powerful than 4080 laptops, according to Time Spy and Port Royal benchmarks I've seen (Zephyrus M16 with 4090 scores something like 18k, meanwhile Acer Helios with a 4080 scores 19k).
I never wanted a 17 or 18" notebook but the value of the G18 4080......I'm thinking about it... Now to just find a way to carry it around. Looking up suitcases now
Those are meant to be desktop replacements. Yes. they would offer slightly lower performance / value compared to desktops, but they come ready-to-use and are easier to maintain, require much less power, desk space and cable clutter, and have no extra hassles like UPSs etc.
It has to be the mini led, both seem to have similar color gamut coverage and response times but the brightness and contrast is just better on the mini led
On the ASUS official site they say that the g18 has the nvidia 4080 at max, not the 4090, only the scar has that... Also it has 32gb ram and 2tera max memory while the scar has double that amount...
Honestly I've been waiting from something like this, a laptop that has everything I want with a price that's not ludicorous, great review and great job ASUS! p.s, how loud is keyboard? It wasn't mentioned in the review so I just wanted to know.
@@Sr1njan Honestly, a 500$ markup for a new product isn't too bad given the Indian market and import tax, but yes, definetly not as economic as buying one in the US.

Hey Dave: I’ve trusted your reviews for years and have bought products off your recommendations and have never been disappointed. When you mentioned the price, I thought for sure Asus cut corners somewhere. Of the 18” you stated it was “Arguably one of the best screens I’ve ever seen in the gaming laptop space.” Went over to BB using your affiliate link and all the reviews mentioned terrible back light bleed. On the fence as to whether to purchase this. Did you experience this in your review unit? Thanks!
Yeah, that's why I'm commenting. The BB reviews are ROUGH. 3 out of 5 stars for a $2500 laptop is def a no go. I really want an 18 inch gaming laptop, but I'm going to wait till companies get a clue that having an 18 screen isn't worth 3-4 grand.
same. there are so many reviews that comment how bad the screen is for them or other failures of the device. for me 2500 is the perfect price and i'd love to have these specs, but the reviews are making me second guess if i should actually buy it or not once i'm done saving up
@@An1hony The BB reviews are written by incompetent morons. None of them show backlight bleeding. What they show is IPS glow, which is completely normal and happens to *all* IPS displays. Classic case of people imagining a problem where there is none.
Solid state active cooling is about to come onto the scene and I'm very excited for the potential. Frore Systems demonstrated a working prototype of an SSAC module called the AirJet at CES last month and it looks revolutionary. We could soon see actual gaming laptops in Macbook Air sized form factors and fanless handheld gaming devices.
Solid state active cooling is a gimmick. We need better chips to run Windows on, and we need them now. MacBook M1 Air has awesome performance without active cooling.
I agree it’s different device but I would go for Mac for anything except 3d - M chips can do raster but more expensive and no RT/optix renderer. Maybe ML if you rely on CUDA is off the shelf too. All else is the same but +3-6hr of battery life and a bit more reliability, but less repeatability and no upgrades. As much as I hate that fact Apple is just too good, they have to be nerfed.
@@dmitryburlakov6920 "M Chips can do faster" nice joke lol the top of the line M2 max is destroyed by i9 in real world task and also most of the scientific industry and 3d industry use windows not mac because they are garbage, only video editing and graphics designing are good in mac and for ML mac is utter trash so yeah if you are only youtuber mac is good 👍 but serious work linux amd windows is way to go and AV1 is also going mainstream so in future windows is going to be best than apple in video editing also
@@-Blue-_ I wrote “raster”, by which I mean rasterizing graphics pipeline as opposed to ray tracing / ray marching pipeline - where nVidia, not Intel, have really serious advancements (same goes for CUDA). All else is just bullshit. Wow desktop 125W processor is faster than mobile 20W chip very cool awesome bro. AV1 yeah definitely almost like avx 512 on x86-64 will change the industry because it’s not like as soon as 512 kicks in frequencies go 800mhz. (Nothing wrong with av just they weren’t specifically successful with their previous endeavours in accelerating numbers crunching) First step to really improve is to acknowledge that years of development lead Intel to stagnation, and fortunately unlike you people at Intel seem to understand that, but truth is it’ll take some precious years till they achieve similar results. During those years I advice using macs if person needs extra mobile power and is alright with mac, thats it. But marketing feeds fanboys with copium, alright good job Intel, need to pump that sales to do real R&D instead of useless work of last years. Praying for fanboys to not have microcode updates that will turn their i9 to Athlon 2 again.
Moments like this, living in Korea really sucks. If I go to stores, the best they have is like 3050 laptops, if I order online, I have to deal with scalpers increasing the price by like 500-700 dollars + shipping fees.
I only wish Asus kept the charger/hdmi/ethernet/extra usbs ports on the back of the device. It makes it so clean not having a bunch of wires all around my machine.
I really wish they had an OLED option! How does the MiniLED compare to OLED in your opinion Dave? Especially when it comes to the blacks during black bars etc. And it's a matte screen, not glossy like OLED usually is (glossy is better for colors/contrast).
as someone who cant spend over 2k on a laptop but wants something that looks good and performs well, im really hoping the 4050 g16 isnt too expensive, since its using the old m16 chasis + even could use a 12th gen cpu itll really help bring the price down and i really hope i can get it

You can’t wait for eternity to get a new laptop. I have Scar15 with 2060 from 2019 and it is still very capable for gaming. Yours will last a long time as well. With it being only 1 year old you can still sell it for a decent price and get a new one if you want it really bad.
@@LowmanGames Not really. Usually price goes up for similar tiers of product, not down. They dropped at least $500 off based on similar last gen CPU and GPU config. 65w sustained performance for the CPU on the G18 is nice! I'm using an LG Gram right now but it's sustained 20 watt is just not enough. 3kg (18 inch) vs 1.3kg (17 inch) though
Hi Dave, please, when you're putting the resolution of the screen, in brackets put the aspect ratio too! it would be a great help and depending on the people, either a pro/con for it being either way. I personally love their decision to go with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Even though many people would want it to be 16:9.
MSI Raider and titan series sold for more with less because it could deliver and sustain 175 W power with some aesthetics as well. This product crushed that advantage many times over. Love to see this kind of competition. My gut is telling me they are selling this laptop without profit or something or maybe with a little loss (very little chance). Just one thing I am waiting for before I buy is did they cut corner? Subpar components? Let's wait and write down this laptop model number in Google calendar 👍
You're the only reviewer so far that's even shown the Asus M16. Hopefully you'll have the 4070 version soon & do some kind of "beat value buy" video for that £1800-£2700 range of 16"/18" laptops with 4060/4070s in. I think the G18 is hard to beat, but the M16 is just fantastic although nowhere near as powerful & with mid tier CPU as opposed to 24 core.
Awe man i was really hoping this was gonna be the laptop to get, but after seeing the reviews, and the issues with the screen, I'm back to square one. Strix, what used to be a high end laptop, is all over the place this year, the cheapest model is selling without the numberpad and even withou the numerpad on the tochpad and not saying anything about it. Very sad thing to see, not even the expensive one was worth it, what is the next option? Legion is looking good so hoping for that, have to get a replacement laptop soon...
I’m really hoping for a good price point on a 4080 M16. I have the 3060 M16 from last year and this years model corrects the issues I had with last years. Hope you do a full on review of one soon!
Smart move shifting the power port to the side rather than at the back, though the back is more convenient. The amount of heat being pumped out the back literally melted parts inside the power port. Took my 2022 G15 scar back under warranty twice.
Have you looked at the retail version? A lot of Best Buy reviews have been pretty terrible... any follow-up? I have this sitting in my cart. Thanks Rick

Idk man, I can't justify spending more than $2000 on any laptop and even that's pushing it. The prices have shot up to insane amounts in just a couple years with these new cards Luckily I still have a 2021 Legion 7 with a 3070 that still runs well. Got it for $1300 on a Black Friday deal but even at MSRP I think it was $1800. At these new prices I might as well get a desktop
At this power and price level, just build a desktop. I got a G14 alongside my desktop since it has great battery life, is small, and can play most games when I do have to travel. It's the cheapest laptop that doesn't sacrifice battery, portability, and power, unless you need 1440p max settings for tripleA games.
i think if your looking at it as a portable desktop replacement its worth it, the desktop 3090 is $1500 alone and the laptop 4090 beats it and gives u portability, an amazing screen, keyboard etc
Complete BS. This Asus configuration is not available anywhere, and most sites say Out of Stock with no price shown. Last night I found it available at a well known website through an Asus certified resale company. I configured these exact specs and the price was $3K… Yes some might be lucky enough to buy the limited number of these units at $2500, but this tactic has long since become sickening. “Asus… a chip off the old nVidia block”
I have 16inch AMD version of this last gen 6900 laptop. it really gets hot. while i was upgradng the ram i notice Asus just slap 16inch screen on 15inch motherboard and pack it on larger chassis. There was large unused space on the side near exhaust. What a creative Asus engineering. from the video this is no the case here
Hi Dave :) What's about coil whine sound on the scar? And black screen bug? And weird sound during scrolling? Do you not noticed that? ua-cam.com/video/aDbcTye6z0Y/v-deo.html
Dave, I love your reviews so much. Everything from how you present yourself, through to the video production. But in this case, I want to express concern for anyone considering the G18. I can't presume to know, but perhaps you were shipped products that had just that little bit of extra quality control, because what is being stocked in shelves seems like an entirely different product. I've lost count of the number of G18s that have abysmal screen issues, and that's not an exaggeration, I really did encounter so many cases that I should have noted the number of them. I don't know for certain if it's compression of material, or changes in heat states, but I do want to just issue this word of caution in that matter. Internals and performance wise, they do seem to be fantastic, but there might be a legitimate QC issue at the moment re:screens.
The lower power units keeping up with the 175w unit means something is not working on that higher power unit somewhere. Not sure what the bottleneck is with such a good cooling system...
Assuming here: CPU bottleneck. Everyone’s been bringing it up in 4000 series laptops reviews in the context of 1080p, I’m guessing it’s also affecting the ability of the GPU to take advantage of the bigger power budget.
The cooling system looks really quite interesting. On the downside it is one more fan to potentially go wrong. Saying this as someone who had the fans replaced on a Legion laptop after a year of use because of a noisy bearing.

Nice Review Dave, for us content creators, what Laptop will you recommend that’s fast and powerful and not as heavy or bulky as a gaming laptop?
i think a macbook pro series will do just fine
Since they started pushing the limit and innovating with the duo I’ve been almost exclusively Asus. I have to put my money where it matters and a company that takes risks like them is where it’s at!!!!
Love them and I hope they continue!!!

Pro Art Studiobook designed so well better battery life still great power my brother got asus parts for his desktop too they really just tend to make some of the best stuff out there no everything they touch but a lot of it is amazing
They are the Hyundai-kia of computer industry

Wonderful laptops until your motherboard, screen, GPU and fans stop working! 100% will buy twice.
Recently purchased the Zephyrus G15 but damn, this looks amazing.
When Dave runs out of breath, you know he’s found a good laptop
The aesthetic on the laptop body is very appealing especially the RGB lights, I don't mind the thickness of the body. The thinner the device the more difficult to cool the hardware. And it's a DDR 5 memory system, this is ideal for me.
I have one of the old Zephyrus models, and I love its performance but I wish there was something comparable with better build quality. Like if you had an XPS 15 but made it thicker and let ASUS design the cooling and put an rtx 4090 in it. Imagine something like the 16 inch macbook pro, but running windows with a 4090.
What a dream, you read my mind. The closest to what you just described is the legion slim 7
You're describing the Razer Blade series. Literally the Blades.

I'm genuinely curious if releasing a new system every year is viable long term. Feels like something that would make a loss or break even at best
@@mangaas So, they don't create more unless people pay them first???
Laptops are disposables. People buy every 2 years, if not every year on rich western countries. These companies will be fine.
Feel the same, even the Strix Series have 4060 and 4070 models that are not covered in this Video.
Which laptop would you suggest then??
Could you please describe the problem of power chip failure in depth? I am very curious about it.
@@dant1786 Basically laptop won't turn on. I believe it's a short on the motherboard, either a particular power regulator chip is faulty or some other problem is shorting it.
How was the omen. Thinking of 17 but ppp say the cpu is cooking hot. Also do you have coil whine ?
Oh wow that Dave-blue Armored Cap snapping into place is the most satisfying thing. I love how it looks and that click also somehow gives fulfillment.

M16 4090 is less powerful than 4080 laptops, according to Time Spy and Port Royal benchmarks I've seen (Zephyrus M16 with 4090 scores something like 18k, meanwhile Acer Helios with a 4080 scores 19k).

Those are meant to be desktop replacements. Yes. they would offer slightly lower performance / value compared to desktops, but they come ready-to-use and are easier to maintain, require much less power, desk space and cable clutter, and have no extra hassles like UPSs etc.
A satchel, backpack, or carrying case would work. Whatever could fit a thick college textbook would probably fit this.

Solid state active cooling is about to come onto the scene and I'm very excited for the potential. Frore Systems demonstrated a working prototype of an SSAC module called the AirJet at CES last month and it looks revolutionary. All else is the same but +3-6hr of battery life and a bit more reliability, but less repeatability and no upgrades. As much as I hate that fact Apple is just too good, they have to be nerfed.

First step to really improve is to acknowledge that years of development lead Intel to stagnation, and fortunately unlike you people at Intel seem to understand that, but truth is it’ll take some precious years till they achieve similar results.

Which would recommend the Asus ROG Zephyrus g14 or the standard Legion 5
Dave's love for teal and turquoise is what I connect the most to his videos.

Smart move shifting the power port to the side rather than at the back, though the back is more convenient. The amount of heat being pumped out the back literally melted parts inside the power port. Took my 2022 G15 scar back under warranty twice.

Luckily I still have a 2021 Legion 7 with a 3070 that still runs well. Got it for $1300 on a Black Friday deal but even at MSRP I think it was $1800. At these new prices I might as well get a desktop
I mean, you won’t need em
At this power and price level, just build a desktop. I got a G14 alongside my desktop since it has great battery life, is small, and can play most games when I do have to travel. I have 16inch AMD version of this last gen 6900 laptop. it really gets hot. while i was upgradng the ram i notice Asus just slap 16inch screen on 15inch motherboard and pack it on larger chassis. There was large unused space on the side near exhaust. What a creative Asus engineering. from the video this is no the case here
This is the first time I see a Dave2D video in 60FPS.
Hi Dave :) What's about coil whine sound on the scar? And black screen bug? And weird sound during scrolling? Do you not noticed that?

The G18 looks beautiful and the pricing….$2,500?!?!? They’re madmen! 🤯
ASUS always goes hard with it’s ROG products.
Dave, thank you for your videos.. loved it so much
I am a Prt Sc user, I know what you mean. 😅😅 It's just a simple button why can't they add it on top of another button, makes it so much easier.
Please, get some of the new Intel's to test battery life and performance because I am about to head down and buy a Mac pro at this point 😬
The cooling system looks really quite interesting. On the downside it is one more fan to potentially go wrong. Saying this as someone who had the fans replaced on a Legion laptop after a year of use because of a noisy bearing.
Dave3D is the “ASUS” of “tech” UA-cam… bringing that sweet, sweet value to us “time crunched” viewers.
God i want to pick one of the g18's up but they're priced at $3500+ USD in New Zealand lol
MW sound effect was a nice touch
Would be super nice to sync rgb lightning with screen like Ambilight, otherwise I do not understand why it’s there at all
get well soon dave
I hope we can get a proper comparison of the Zephyrus M16 vs Blade 16 in future.
First qualified review with details, thanks a lot 4 you job!
