It doesnt get much more perfect than this.. The best Hey Joe version ever - I really wished there was actually footage of him playing this exact performance - he was really on fire that evening.. R.I.P Roy - 23 years gone today - one of the all time greats.

Indeed... There''s something about this version. IMHO it is the quintessential Hey Joe...Roy or otherwise. I always comeback to this one. There's just something about it, dark and sinister sounding. The way it builds to a fiery climax really resonates. Roy was at his peak here.

Jack Hampton the way I see it is this performance is played from Joes point of view after he’s killed his wife, and this version is how he “hears” his story while on the run, with the heavily fuzzed portion in the beginning taking place right when he shoots her

After weeks of thought, I think I'm somewhere near understanding the greatness of this. It's the silence. It's the fact he plays for less than 50% of the length of the song. It's that confidence.
    Astonishing.

Thats why Jimi Hendrix, Walter Trout, Mark Knopfler and so on, all learned from him. He is the underestimated Master, who invented in the 50's to manipulate the guitar with electronic devices. Like the wah wah phaser.😊
But over that.....he had control over the Strings

Roy was unknown to the mainstream and it made him all that much better than had he been wildly famous. Stevie Ray Vaughn was awesome to see in his early days too, yet seemed to slip after gaining fame. Roy always put on an incredibly great show. It was worth way more than the price of admission every time. No one has command over an instrument like Roy!

Jimi Hendrix's version is great. But Roy takes it to another level. Hes just all over the place. Sometimes its soft, subtle, and beautiful and at other times he's just explosive, powerful, and blowing your mind. Some of the greatest guitarists like Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson (from the Band),, and Eric Clapton praised him. Hell, Mick Jagger, John Lennon and Paul all tried to recruit him. Pretty much he was a god on the guitar.

No shit? I only know that Dir Paul tried to recruit this guy for Wings. Unsuccessfully. Roy , at the time, thought that he would break out on his own. Unfortunately that didn't happen. It's too bad. He should have been known by everyone. Rory was another that was supposed to rule the world. Angels on one shoulder and Demon on the other.

Jimi and Roy jammed. Theres a clip on youtube. Jimi definitely knew who Roy was. Im a massive Jimi fan more so than Roy. But you cannot deny this is sooooo much better than any version of Hey Joe Jimi played. I have alot of them, what Roy did to Hey Joe is like what Jimi did to All Along the Watchtower. He made it his own.

Roy dedicated his life to his music.I love watching him play, check out his livestock lp or his first lp on polydor.I think Roy was a total lone wolf no one was ever able to market him to the masses and after a few years they pretty much gave up one the idea.Roy never wore fluffy shirts or dressed wildly, very humble acting on stage He makes me sad and happy and raises the hairs on my arms,I feal his energy even though he is gone his music will be enjoyed for a long time to come.Thank You

Just because Jimi was an icon guitarist doesn’t make him the owner of this song? He made it his own just as Roy did but the comments are suggesting that this is a Hendrix song but he didn’t write it, I have much respect for Jimi being left handed he was a master but when you finally understand that he strung his guitar the correct way for a upside down guitar you understand he wasn’t much different from true left handed guitarist like Otis Rush and Albert king, so all in all Roy B made this song his own and it’s not a Jimi song and knowing what I didn’t know Growing up Roy could humiliate anyone but he wasn’t that way and that’s why he’s the best he did what he did because he knew how the fuck to do it, I was in the left hand sympathy boat because I believed Jimi had to play upside down and being left handed I was mind blown Jimi is still unbelievable but once you honestly give Roy Buchanan a chance you understand how epic the man was and will always be

Jimi Hendrix was a good Guitar Player, but Roy Buchanan was Great. Roy was so much better than Jimi was or would have ever become. Jimi has just been elevated by the media and those that prospered ( financially ) in saying he is number one, ( TOTAL B.S. )... Jimi's estate was only worth about $20,000 to $ 25K at his death in 1970, today it is around $185,000,000..... That is 185 million dollars. Pete Townshend, the Lead Guitarist, a song writer and one of the singers of the Group - "The WHO" is only worth $150million and he-they had far more HIT Songs than Jimi ever did. This tells you why they ( Jimi's Estate ) and many others keep pushing to keep Jimi as the greatest, MONEY- MONEY-MONEY...

Andres, thanks for having shared this! My first taste of Roy Buchanan was ‘Second Album’ back in early mid-seventies. It blew me away… but I didn’t keep up with his music. My loss! Lately as I have been revisiting the blues I rediscovered him. It would have been great to have seen him live. Wow! My take on what you referred to as "Shenandoah" at the end resonates like an "Amazing Grace" improvisation… RIP Roy

Roy has stated that this record was the best thing that he’s ever done, and it’s hard to argue. Too bad this was only released in Japan, I can only find 4 of the 8 songs here on UA-cam. In my opinion Roy came across best live, as did a lot of guitarists and bands of that time. Towards the end when he goes into that rendition of Shenandoah I get goosebumps and chills every single time, puts me in a headspace that I can’t quite describe other than spiritual. There was always a sense of longing and melancholy in Roy’s playing that I really identify with, especially his more melodic instrumental playing. One of my main influences as a guitarist.
