  • We’ve driven the 2016 Cadillac CT6 but now we go on a deep technical dive of the 34 speaker Bose Panaray audio system. We start with an actual count of what all those speakers are and then bring in the people behind the development of this system - Cadillac CT6 Executive Chief Engineer, Travis Hester, and VP of Bose Automotive and musician, Marc Mansell. Along with MotoMan, they take us behind the scenes of how the Bose Panaray system was developed . . .

Some might ask why you need a 34-speaker stereo in a car, I say that it shows that Cadillac is finally getting back to their roots & once again offering that true hallmark of what luxury cars USED to be about............EXCLUSIVITY!!!!

All you require to listen to that crap is an over-driven subwoofer !!

  • @Acoustic_Theory

The four small speakers in the floor enclosures are 2.5" woofers with 10mm of excursion in one direction - very long throw, miniature subwoofers. They are based on a design that was used in the Bose VideoWave TV. Together, they add up to about as much output as a 5-1/4" woofer, but they are then mounted in a bass-reflex enclosure that actually makes up quite a bit more output, allowing them to play down to about 40 Hz. Together, the left and right bass encloures have about as much output as an 8" subwoofer. The little cast-aluminum modules the woofers are mounted in allow the force each speaker generates to be cancelled out by the opposing speaker, so no reaction vibration gets created that can be felt in the floor. Then that gets combined with the output of a 10" subwoofer in the back, which has a special "magnet-in", or "inverted" design that places the magnet in front of the speaker cone, so it can be very thin from front to back. This works about as well as a conventional woofer of the same size, but it is more expensive because it requires a separate support structure for the magnet.

I would safely bet that this Panaray system is about as pristine as you have ever heard audio. 34 speakers with multiple algorithms and Bose quality tech seems like a good recipe for success. It's just that 34 speakers is an over the top move.

US/Midwest - Lexus Rx350 with Levinson, Audi SQ5 with Bang&Olufsen, Cadillac CTS-V Wagon with Bose and Harley with custom stereo ;-)
34 is plenty. My issue with these systems is the never ending fiddling I end up doing with the surround/driver/all, etc. processing. They all sound great, but different and I can never decide. Drives me nuts ... They all have great DSP and spatial imaging/clarity. My only beef with all of them is the lack of very low frequencies. Levinson does it best with punch. I added a Rockford Fosgate sub with amp (small stand alone unit) in the tire well to the Audi to see the difference and it was huge. Not sure why a company like B&O can't do this from the factory. Out of all those 34 speakers on the new CT6, there is NO physical large subwoofer, so no way to get that air moving for the deep/low response. No, I don't listen to rap - jazz, some classical, mostly rock.

There are some OEMs we don't feature on the show - sadly, FCA (anything based in Auburn Hills) is on that list. Full answer as to why in the comments of either of those two episodes but can say it has absolutely nothing to do with Ralph or the folks that design, engineer, build or create the cars.

Has Bose ever installed a premium system in a car? I have listened to a lot of Bose systems and every one of them lacked midrange and often sounded compressed. I can think of several cars where the base non-Bose was massively better than the optional Bose upgrade. I haven't listened to them all, but I am curious if anyone has heard a great Bose car stereo system. I have also taken apart Bose systems and found them to be horribly engineered. But I digress.
First branded system would probably be Blaupunkt in the 1933 Crossley. Blaupunkt, of course, went on to be the upgraded stereo for Porsche and Mercedes for many years.
The top systems in factory stereos today are the Meridian systems installed in Range Rover (any) and the Mark Levinson system installed in Lexis. The Bang Olufsen systems in Audi are waste of money, despite their pretty rising tweeters. I haven't heard the Burmeister system but will hopeful get to soon.
The number of speakers in a car system is an irrelevant question. The number needed is based up the cubic volume of the car and the relative ambient sound the system needs to overcome. Center channel speakers are never needed, there is a long article from audio engineering mag that goes into the details, but basically center channels are all for show and only work if the original track had a center channel (which is very rare). Attempting to create soundstage with a center channel is a DSP issue, that never works. Ideally, you would have 3 speakers on each side (tweeter, mid and woofer). They would be positioned in the A pillar running down into the footwell.
I listen to just about everything... classical, jazz, death metal, folk and electronica. My current system is a Focal/Pioneer system in an MX-5. I am about to add a compact hatch to the garage and replace the Miata with a Boxster.

+MKTech I driven this vehicle and the system sounded superb, although, I did here some rattling coming from the passenger side rear and it really made me wonder what kind of longevity these systems will have when they're used to pump tunes hard on a regular basis.

    • @echtogammut
      @echtogammut 8 років тому

I wouldn't worry about rattles too much as those are probably manufacturing gremlins that can be ironed out. In terms of longevity, those speaker module look pretty stought, certainly stronger than a lot of aftermarket setups. I still haven't had an opportunity to demo this, I was really hoping to get the chance this weekend, but the stars didn't align and I ended up driving Sonata Hybrid 350 miles. That was a very disappointing sound system.

The CT6's main draw for me is the S-class-like-size of the interior. She doesn't need a really big car and the XTS is more than spacious enough for her, but the CT6 looks interesting for that same $55,000.

Hi MotoMan, from Canada here. I've tried the 19-speaker Revel audio system in the 2016 MKX and it is pretty enough to blow me away. I guess what we're currently having right now in the car audio system industry is just like the "megapixel race" of the cameras of the early 2010s. More speakers, much better sound, which is very much misleading. Quality>quantity.

I had a CT6 as a loaner vehicle and let me you the panaray sound system is actually good! However bass is something to be desired for :( I know it has a 10inch sub and the 4 mini subs in front but it doesn’t do it’s justice. You crank up the bass and the volume and you can tell the subwoofer struggles to play out while then it sound muddy! Stuggles to get a clean low end bass, although it does have a shake the seat bass. My thing that I struggle with this sound system is that there isn’t enough mid range, I’m hoping for the redesign they improve upon the bass issues and maybe tweaking the system itself and possibly adding more power to the sub

I have a Bose system in my new canyon and it's one of the better sounding efforts I have heard from them. Bass response is actually pretty flat through all but the lowest frequencies. I was surprised. It's not really loud and they need to get rid of the center channel as well. So I would say better than a stock system by quite a bit but no where near say the Mark Levinson systems I had in a Lexus. Wish Bose would really step up the game.

The question asked at 12:06...what was the first factory premium audio system installed in a car? I could be off in not mentioning any earlier systems, but the first USA OEM Bose audio system introduced as an option was in the 1983 Cadillac Seville & Eldorado along with the Oldsmobile Tornado and later made available in the 1985 Cadillac DeVilles/Fleetwood, Buick Park Avenue, Oldsmobile 88, 98. Corvettes got the systems in 1984.
Lincoln introduced the JBL audio system as an option in 1986 on the Continental...following up with adding it to the Mark VII for 1987, with Town Car getting it mid year '87...but Town Car got the first ever factory installed CD play at the intro of 1987 models without a JBL option before the JBL system became available for Town Car in mid year, then the CD player was only available in conjunction with the JBL option. Continental got the CD player option in 1988 but only with the JBL option...mark series got the CD option later but wasn't a seperate unit as with the Town Car & Continental but a built in head unit with no cassette...those early in head unit CD players are quite hard to find today without finding one NOS in the box.

Whether its Bang & Olufsen, Becker, Bowers & Wilkins, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon, Mark Levinson. Revel Audio system, Selenium are all owned by the same company Harman Kardon ( Harman International Industries). Beginning of 2015 they acquired B&O Car Audio Business for $157 Million up front, and pay an annual license agreement of 1.8 million for the next 20 years.
From personal experience the my brother's 84 corvette (C4) Bose amp speakers was crap.
My neighbours 2005 Audi A8 had a great Bose system. I really liked it.
About 2 years ago i bought a used Mercedes SL500, and from 1993 to 2002 they had a 7 speaker Bose system which for a convertible it was amazing. Mark Levinson in the LS460 is great, but seems the amps keeps blowing, a lot of LS460 owners complained about that. Knock on wood it hasn't happened to me. (yet) lol

I'd put anywhere from 15-25 speakers in a car. More speakers if in an SUV, a bit less in a sedan. I'd put woofers, tweeters and midrange in the doors, a few midrange in the dash, tweeters in the A and B pillars, two woofers in the rear deck lid (in a sedan) and two subwoofers below the rear seats. I'm from Cincinnati, OH and drive a 2012 Land Rover LR4 HSE Lux with the 17 speaker, 825 watt harman/kardon Logic 7 surround sound system. I listen to a lot of pop (Taylor Swift, Maroon 5 etc, and 80s alternative such as a-ha and The Clash)

Back in the 1980s GM was the first Manufacturer to use a Bose sound system in their vehicles. As far as the explanation of noise cancellation there are actually microphones in the vehicle that pick up engine and transmission noise and cancel it out, during this time the vehicle runs lower RPMs which results in a quieter ride but there's a whole lot more involved if you want to look on the GM Websites.

Very cool. 34 speakers seems like a lot to me, but I know nothing about this shit. If I was Cadillac I would challenge a company like Bose and say, we are working on this new luxury car, you can put 10 speakers in it, make it work. Fun goal, who knows what they might come up with.

Texas. Wife has Audi with Bang&Olufsen. It only has 14(hehehe) speakers, but sounds pretty good even steaming music (lower bit rate) or radio. Obviously the higher quality you put through the system the better the results would be. Since humans can't hear above 20K Hz, I wonder what Bose did here. Was it wasted?
Bose has always been able to bring big sound out of small packages in their home equipment. I hope they did it here since we could not enjoy the sound quality via UA-cam.

I would guess this sounds fantastic. In a car, the more you can break down the higher frequency sources of sound, the less muddled and more detailed it would become over road noise. Think of it more as 4 seperate more typical sound systems, 1 for each passenger. If in the general balanced mode, each seat would get a localized, full range of sound without the midrange speakers dominating the highs or the inaccurate bouncing and distortion from speakers further away. This could be done with less speakers, but I'm guessing the number came from actual testing as to what would sound best and still fit in the car.

+MotoManTV Cool. After the Navy, I started in engineering at Marshall University. The math was not my friend so I switched to Rehabilitation Education (social work). Social work was not to be! Ten years later, I went for my law degree (J.D.). Life can take many strange turns! Heck, look at you!

To answer Motoman's last question, first, I'm in Nashville. I think the number of speakers is missing the point. The proper question should be, how many speakers does it take to solve the problem of immersive audio for all major seating points in a luxury car like this? It's easy to get into a phallic measuring contest between luxury car makers saying that they partner with this brand or have this many speakers. Audiophiles are usually two channel guys anyway, but surround sound music is matches well with automotive applications. Does 34 speakers make the overall soundstage any better? Can you use 34 speakers to create a balanced presentation across most audible frequencies (a big problem in car audio)? Is this system going to be worth it salt in the lower ranges under 300 hz, a place where OEM car audio typically fails?
I'd like to see someone come into a review like this with a sound meter and just spend some time testing frequency test tones to find out how flat the frequency response is in the four major seating areas from 20 hz to 20 khz. Then review a number of selections from various kinds of music (classical, rock, funk, jazz, blues) to get a sense of how this system truly compares. In other words, review this system like any other audio magazine or blog reviews a speaker system.

Dear MotomanTV I am a fan of your tech and mechanical reviews. And this was a good review. It would have been a geat review if you would provide some comparison with other high end audio systems that you have experienced. My experience with Bose is they are amazing with their clarity and precise sound but they are poor on MID Bass and Low frequencies and this system seems to be no different as I didn't see any proper sub-woofer to play low frequencies.
    Cheers!

I'll like to see a premium audio system in a coupe with THREE speakers. Two massive electrostatic full range panels across the upper door trim; 6 x 24" panels will be large enough. One dynamic sub somewhere in the center tunnel cover. You only need a ton of speakers if you are into surround imaging. A 100W x 2 + 200W x 1 RMS Class-D amp with a Class A filter is more than enough. Half that is more than enough actually, but since Class D is so compact anyway, why not. Put that Class A tube in the dash in place of stupidities like the analog clock so you can easily replace it when it burns out and also because the vacuum tube will look really cool with it's subdued glow at night. Forget that and you can get extremely good sound with a 2.1 channel system. Since you are primarily looking forward in a car anyway, I fail to see the necessity for surround sound. Oh, and dump that CD changer or player, who uses CDs these days anyway? 320kbps mp3 or aac is more than good enough.

34 speakers? That's quantity over quality, and ultimately a marketing gimmick to appeal to the idea that "more is better." I'd bet an entry-level Hertz, JL Audio, Rockford-Fosgate, or Focal aftermarket system with as little as 9 speakers (a mid-bass driver + tweeter combo in each door plus a single subwoofer) and a 5-channel amp to power it all would have overall better clarity and detail than this Bose system. It may not be as loud (but it would be loud enough) or "surrounding" as the Bose system, but if you wanted a more "surrounding" effect, just install 2 small co-axial (i.e. mid-bass driver with a tweeter in the middle) speakers in the dashboard , 2 more behind the rear seats, and an extra amp to power them, and you'd have a surround effect that'd likely be just as good as (or close enough to) this Bose system. But then, the money you'd spend on those "surround" speakers and extra amp could instead be spent on significantly better door speakers and the amp to power them. Again, what's better; quantity or quality?
BTW, if you're going to tell me I don't know sound quality or don't like Bose because I can't afford it….I have a $1,300 set of Hertz Mille 2-way (as in 2 tweeters, 2 6.5 inch mid-basses, and 2 crossovers [that are bigger than this Bose system's amps]) car speakers that say otherwise. Those are on a level of sound quality most people on the planet don't even know is possible.

2012 Cadillac Escalade Ext premium. Little Rock, Arkansas. I like bose systems, but when I turn up the volume, bose "smart amplifiers" usually tune down the bass when the volume is up high. I have noticed this in all my previous Cadillacs with bose systems. I would prefer a bigger more power subwooher in my center console. I used have an after-market sub and amplifier but I prefer better factory speakers. how is the sound when turned up passed %80? I also want a volume button in the new Escalade and GM to make a 2016-2017 EXT Platinum. what do you think @moto-man

Believe first branded sound system in car was a Bose system in the 1983 Cadillac Seville.

    • @Sevenfeet0
      @Sevenfeet0 8 років тому

+Adam Wadecki The 1983 Seville and Eldorado could be ordered with what was back then called "Delco/GM Bose Symphony Sound", and it was an upgrade from the "Symphony Sound" top of the line stereo that had been available a few years earlier in the Seville and Eldorado. By 1987, it was available on all models and standard on the new Allante. I remember it then since a friend of mine's father had ordered a 1987 Deville with this radio and it was truly impressive back then. You have to understand that OEM car audio was pretty terrible back then. My friend and I dubbed a cassette of a then-new jazz artist's CD to a cassette tape and brought it out to the car. We were floored.
As for answering the question, what was the first co-branded car audio system? I'm not sure. For GM, it was Delco/GM Bose in 1983.

Great series. San Francisco family of 5. Not enough features and power for the price on the CT6 fully loaded. Won't steer me away from a third S Class. Much better looking than what Hyundai is trying with the Eqquos, but just not exciting enough to compete in a $90k market. Seems like this will grab some BMW 5 series fans, Audi A6's and some E Class owners, all at the lower trim levels, but it won't compete well in the full size luxury market. Cadillac would be better off, adding features and raising the price. A bargain is not often high on the list in this market. Either add the features, or go 100% electric.
