    I remember seeing these in the LL Bean catalog as a child. When I was I. The Navy 20 years ago, these were standard issue to flight crew. Interestingly, if you left flight status, they would come to your barracks room and take it back!

    Hey, Michael. I've looked into it, from what I've gathered from manufacturers, wool pile is a wool terrycloth. It looks distinct from toweling terrycloth because the wool fibers fuzz up in a way cotton doesn't. It's essentially a wool sherpa fabric. Max mara uses the same type of fabric in their Teddy coats as opposed to using polyester. Their blend is a mix of merino lambswool, alpaca and mulberry silk for good handfeel, sheen and depth of tone. A max mara coat looks more like real sheepskin than any poly version. Also, it doesn't compress as easily.

    You got a real deal on that jacket. The fit is spot on. LLB made some outstanding leather jackets back in the day. The jacket seems to have had quite a bit of wear as evidanced by the creases in the back but was clearly well cared for. Wear it in good health...

    I ordered this jacket from LL Bean in 2014. Dark Brown, wool lining & fur collar. It's a great heavy winter jacket. It doesn't seem LL Bean is making them anymore...what a shame. It kept me warm during brutally cold winters in Kiev & Odessa Ukraine.

    I have two of these jackets. I have the same wool lined one that you have there and a quilted lined one with a plain leather collar. The quilted lined one has the distressed finish and I payed $30 for it at Goodwill. The wool lined one was a gift from my friend who worked at LL Bean as a return favor for me letting him use my garage and tools to change a piston in his motorcycle. Best jackets I have. I grew up in Maine and I can wear the wool lined one over a tee shirt in 0 degree weather.

    I really liked the way this jacket looked, so I went looking for it online. I couldn’t find the same jacket in as good condition as the one shown in this video, but after some looking I found another very similar style of jacket online by Schott. It’s the Schott 174S, and fortunately it was on sale too. Generally speaking, I don’t like leather jackets, because I feel like they don’t go well with the shape of my body/skin tone, and because I feel like they give off a bad boy appearance. The jacket I got completely changed what I thought of leather jackets before. The jacket was relatively more expensive than the one in the video, even though it had a discount and it wasn’t lined with wool either, but I found that as a plus, because I live in a place with a Mediterranean style climate. Compared to the jacket in the video, I felt like the one I found was better quality, but the one I got has a slightly slimmer more modern looking fit and it’s made out of Full grain cowhide not goatskin. The jacket I got also has very little room for layering, but that might be because it’s still new and hasn’t broken in yet and I have mesomorph athletic build, which might’ve also been why there isn’t much room for me to layer. Anyways, I recommend anyone interested in this jacket to check out the one I got, especially people who are looking for a slimmer style, or people who have a slimmer build.

    Great video! I do have some questions though. How do you think this jacket would hold up in active snowing? Also I was wondering about the knife in the video, is it available anywhere?

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 роки тому

      the jacket should be okay and you should be fine especially if you treat it with some weatherproofing wax! I always keep my leather jackets outside of snowy conditions though just because i hate wet leather so i use wool mostly!
      Also i don’t believe so! Sadly it was a gift so i don’t know too much about it

    • @markg8952

    Old LL Bean stuff is coveted because almost all of it was bulletproof. There was such demand for it at one point that their flagship store in Freeport would stay open 24/7 in the 70s-80s. That jacket is a great find!
    I’ve come around to Sherpa over down this winter after my sainted mother bought me a Carhartt jacket with actual Sherpa in it, not Sherpa fleece. Yes I look like a typical “yeah, kid” New Englander in it, but dammed if I’m not sweating in it after even the slightest bit of movement.

    Everyone is entitled to an opinion but this version of the flying jacket is in my opinion far from the best ever. This is a later Bean edition where earlier ones had a one piece back. The split back is a cheaper device to give consumers lower quality leather. Any greatest bomber jacket argument ever, for me, begins and ends with high quality A-2 WW2 authentic style jackets. But nicely done.

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 роки тому

      True! Although the split back isn’t usually lesser quality leather just a smaller part of the hide at that quality although i do like the less stitching. The big thing here that i didn’t really mention is price! Got this for under $150 and that to me is what makes it by far the best
      And yup A2 WWII jackets are amazing, nothing better!

    • @oaktowndimond668

      The shearling lined beans never had a one piece back. Earlier ones were 2 piece... Later were 3 piece.

    • @richardcostello360
      @richardcostello360 11 місяців тому

      The only reason "true flight jackets" (there is no such thing as a "bomber jacket ") had one piece backs was due to the predominance of horsehide, which are HUGE hides!
      A one piece back is also more comfortable to be stuck in a seat for hours on end.......the less seams the less chance of chaffing

    believe it or not, I just came across this jacket in pristine condition for $50 bucks but removed the tag to see if I get a better price, so they saw it and priced it at $150 which I wasn't willing to pay and left. Now I'm looking at this video heartbroken.

    Agreed! The old USA made beans A2s are an awesome value. Especially the one piece back number sized ones.
    I believe they were made by golden bear in San Francisco?
