This mid-century style of furniture got its name because it was a series commemorating the inauguration of the city of Brasília and the transfer of the capital of Brazil. And out of curiosity, there is a table like this at the Museu do Catetinho in Brasília and which belonged to President Juscelino Kubitschek, then president of Brazil at the time of the city's inauguration.
    Greetings from Brasília - Brazil!

Some years ago I was a volunteer at a local storefront branch library. There was a children's table in very bad shape. Years of bad fixes, layers of wood grain shelf paper. I removed those layers, stripped the finish and applied new stain and new finish. While there was still some "stress marks" left It came out looking great. It was made of Solid Maple and I discovered a great high grade commercial table. The librarian told the County Library HQ of it and officials came over to view that table. Don't dismiss old furniture as a lost cause, repair it, refinish and enjoy such furniture. Good job on your table

Its not…its incredibly frustrating and tedious…especially when you run a shop where you have employees and large projects. The thing about crafting furniture is that you have certain pieces of wood, thatnyou have to source, and dry, etc…and then you have to get a customer, and then you have to make the item…andnyou can get allmthe way to the end, and screw up applying the finish. Then you have to start all over….
Like any job, working with your hands and creating objects, that people use…is rewarding…but same as all jobs, frustrating, repetitive, just like any job.

What fun to see you put this gorgeous table back together. I was working in a buying office in New York With when the Brasilia line of furniture was introduced. It seemed that every bride in the office ordered Brasilia furniture for their apartment or house. I came from a family with beautiful old furniture in each room. This idea of ordering a home full of furniture was new to me. Here we are all these years later and the fine design of the table shines through!

Good job. The latch was correct. It sits in an unlocked position with no leaves. When you pull it apart to add leaves, there are holes in the track where the “hook” drops in and holds it in place. This is so one person can extend the table the correct distance to add a leaf. Then after the leaf is removed, you unlock the track to close it back up. There are instructions out on the internet from the 50s and 60s from Broyhill that demonstrate how it works. Looks great. Great save.

Great job! Looks very nice. I once got lucky with an old, hand-made maple dining table. Decades before, someone set a hot dish on it, and left a deep, black mark, about 8 inches per side of a square. My wife said she remembered seeing the burn on it when she was a child, and we ain't exactly children any more. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I decided to see if I could remove it and upgrade the table overall. I took a belt sander to it (don't remember the grit) and it came out, with no damage to the table. After further sanding and care, the thing looked beautiful, and we still use it daily. I just figured a belt sander would butcher it, but no, it turned out great. Like I said, I got lucky.
