Quote: Her [Jennifer Candy's] first memory of seeing her dad on screen was the 1985 ‘mockumentary’ he did with Eugene Levy called The Last Polka - playing goofy polka musicians Yosh and Stan Shmenge from the fictional country of Leutonia. The duo even appeared in character on The Late Show with David Letterman and performed a polka number. A long-standing rumour is that both actors actually played their accordian and clarinet on stage. Jennifer says they were masters of making it look authentic. “They didn't actually play their instruments, though my dad did play the clarinet in high school and knew how, just not that well. They were just really good actors! (Their polka hit) ‘Cabbage Rolls and Coffee’ will always be a part of our family,” she laughs. (From The Bullet Magazine "Nothing was sweeter than Candy")
We introduced my late father-in-law to the Schmengies. Hailing from Rhode Island, where they used to have polka shows on weekend tv, he laughed till he cried. RUP to him and to John Candy.
As a child who would stay up late on Friday nites, just to watch SCTV, who was forced to watch endless hours of the Lawrence Welk Show with the grandparents, this really made me smile, in part because it was parody, but also because they did it seriously and tastefully.

I'm from Cleveland, too, but my Grandpa and Uncle Fritz are in the Michigan Polka Hall of Fame. (My Mom and her sisters sang with Grandpa's polka band.)
A lot of people are speculating whether Eugene Levy and John Candy were playing their instruments. I looked it up and it's inconclusive. John Candy did play clarinet in high school and was probably good enough to fake it but couldn't really play all too well. Eugene Levy did play the accordion and from what I can find out there, he is playing. The band behind them is real and this was a live performance, so Eugene is most likely playing while John is miming with someone backstage actually playing.
I still have The Shmenges Last Polka on VHS tape, and transferred it over to digital. In the early-mid 90's, found a copy on Ebay and paid $50 for it because it was hard to find, even 25 years ago. I bought it specifically for the tuba solo

I have never seen a full episode of SCTV, but this song is comedy gold! With all these comedic geniuses on one show, it would be difficult to find even a single bad sketch. If only I could find the show on UA-cam in its entirety.
Man, miss these days. Levy, Candy, SCTV. 99% of what's on TV today is total crap between no talent and political correctness. Long live the Kings of Polka!
They didn't actually play the instruments did they? Wouldn't think so but those SCTV guys were so damn talented and I know Eugene Levy wrote the song he played in A Mighty Wind and played the guitar for real in it, so I know he's capable.
The better I'm getting myself at playing the clarinet, the more I am convinced that Candy did not play himself when he was doing Yosh Shmenge. He did play marching band clarinet in high school, and his daughter Jen says that he knew how to play, but not that good. But that he was very good at pretending to play. I think she's right. Why the heck would she throw her father under the bus? Everybody who has seen Jen Candy talking about her father knows that she is deeply devoted to his memory.
They're the Blues Brothers of Polka.
Don't we all wish Candy was still with us on earth?
He is.

RIP Mr. Candy.
Their "Dr. Tongue and Bruno" sketches were the best. They had real Abbott- and- Costello timing.
I teach clarinet and piano. John is really playing. So is Eugene. Too bad parents don't see the value of music lessons these days.

John comes close. Eugene, not so much.
Candy is faking it and eugene is playing. Do some research.
Every Canadian kid learned an instrument in public school. At least in Ontario it was a big thing in 60’s and 70’s. I play clarinet and trumpet 🎺
