To commit to taking a spoof as far as it can go and using polka as a vehicle, a musical enigma in itself is brilliant. They really are playing their instruments, they are completely immersed in Lutanian culture. You can only be weirder and they go beyond that. They are NOT playing their instruments! And neither is the band. There are several clues giving that away. Candy not having the clarinet in his mouth while you hear the clarinet. THe tuba players cheeks puffing but not in synch with the tuba notes. The accordian not plugged into anything or miked. Levy is not playing the accordian properly. He kind of shakes it in a way that is not how an accordian makes that kind of sound.

@@davesimms8825 I watched a few videos of John Candy playing clarinet as Yosh Schmenge, and was far as fingering is concerned, what he mostly does is alternating between G# and C or Eb and F, depending on the register. I wonder why so many people insist that John Candy did his own clarinet playing when even his daughter, who adores him to this day, says that her father could play the clarinet a little, but not that good. In the "Laughing On the Outside" biography by Knelman, it says that John Candy used to play clarinet in a high school marching band. This doesn't take much skill.

I've got to comment. I grew up with the Schmenge brothers. They were a little older than me, but not too old!!! You know what I mean! 🥰 They used to come to our homes and play for us, and Papa, he would get so jealous, because Mama would just squeal and it would make Papa blush and he would try to rush the brothers, like a footsball player. But, those brothers were so funny! They would grab Papa and kiss him and hug him, so then how could Papa stay mad? He and Mama would dance between eating the cabbage rolls and coffee, and then they would kiss each other and both clap very loudly for Yosh and Stan and everyone was happy. Yes, I miss those days.

Eugene and John looked so authentic playing their instruments one who is a musician would have to consider could these guys actually know how to play them? I critically watched Eugene's playing hand on this video and it is strikingly accurate to the pitch, rhythms and placement in the range of where the tones exist on the accordion to where he was either taught how to fake it to look real, Or, he really did know how to play the accordion at least for these songs!
Anyway, Eugene and John were comedic geniuses! I truly miss John and what he would have continued to make had he stuck around longer.

Dave's show took so much inspiration from the old "variety" type shows which, I think even the were laughably cheesy and then took a subversive turn. The Schmenges performing is real-everyone is really playing the music-even if the act is totally fake.
