They actually caused a riot in Hamtramck. Several restaurants were looted of cabbage rolls and coffee and you could follow the trail of paczkis leading to the Leutonian Senior Center Theater and Pickling Plant. It was a real mess.
When I was young boy in Leutonia, I was wanting always to grow up to be third Shmenge brother, but then as I grew older, I realize that no, I cannot be third Shmenge because I had different parents than Yosh and Stan. But that did not stop me from the dreaming. =)
atworkstation, thanks for your comment....and glad you enjoyed one of the 1500+ vintage sports, comedy and music videos that were posted this past year at www.imasportsphile.com....and since we have 9,000 more videos to post over the next 5 - 6 years....you should bookmark our page and not rely on utube....cuz our 100 different channels under different names on the tube is cuz we use them as weigh stations for our 2300 hours of vintage content that we are posting on our page.
@@sheriffburfordt.justice4488 Polkas all sound a bit alike, I don't think I'd would want to listen to an entire night of nothing but Polka -- but a few minutes of raunchy swinging in a 2/4 measure can be fun. And playing dancing music always looks easier than it really is. The Shmenge brothers are goofy characters, but they play pretty well.
Why wouldn't they be served it...unless somebody else maybe ate all the cabbage rolls and drank all the coffee. You never know with all those Hollywood types of people - they don't get good cabbage rolls and coffee all the time over there in California. Why would they? It's too close to maybe the ocean where the salt water makes the cabbage rolls not rise the right way for making them.
We are glad you enjoyed this video....for our comedy section at our ImaSportsphile webpage has many vintage comedy clips of comedians that deserve to have their work remember by those who are too soon forgetting....and this is classic John Candy stuff.
Are you kidding?! Did you ever see Lawrence Welk's Gail Farrell and Dick Dale sing "One Toke Over The Line" with a straight face?! "A modern American spiritual!" There's a dozen copies on UA-cam ... find one and enjoy!!
Undugu Umbu, thanks for your comment....as you obviously enjoy the Shmenges as much as we do at ImaSportsphile....for this video is truly a "nugget of gold" in our treasure chest of vintage memories with the 2000 videos currently posted on our webpage.
...and that's the great thing about it. It's a little fake, and a lot real. It doesn't demean people who like polka music. Very unlike Borat, in its treatment of "other" people.
With 100 hrs of comedy already posted at www.imasportsphile.com .....and another 200 hours to go....I am sure you will find more "laughs" to your liking.
Losing John Candy was like losing a good friend.
Said everyone ever.
Always hated the guy. This is the least inspired bit I've seen.
Well stated. My roommate used to say he was everybody's guy.
Same thing with Robin Williams
Everyone feels that way about John Candy, if they have a soul. I miss him.
The people of Sheboygan, they loved it!!!.... 623 copies sold!!

Legend.
Doc Severinsen playing trumpet for the Shmenges -- could be one of his career highlights. The Shmenges retired way too soon.
One classic album after another . The polka remains the same .
A night at the Polka
Appetite for Polka
I thought that was him.
Great parody of the early Polka music, cabbage rolls and cofee. Jash Schmenge is priceless
Hey, it's Gus Polinski from the Kenosha Kickers! Polka Polkaaah Polka.

Polinski just announced he's gonna pull his music off Spotify until they drop Joe Rogan ... true story!

That trumpet player’s not bad!!! 😉
Had no idea young Eugene Levy was buddies with John Candy. That’s awesome…
They were on SCTV together with Martin Short annd Harold Ramis annd Catherine O’Hara and knew each other since the 70’s.
Watch SCTV from the '80s brother. Basically the whole cast of then young Canadians in Toronto all became massive comedy superstars worldwide.
I was there for Strikes, Spares, and Schmenges. Leutonia's greatest export.
With Shmenges you know you got something
I still mourn John Candy's leaving us.
RIP John Candy (1950-1994).

Oom Pa Pa music is lots of the funs 👍
Was that Robin Williams and Billy Chrystal?
Love these guys!
How many accordions does Gene own?! It seems he has a new accordion in every video!
you can never have enough accordians!
A good polka man has many of the accordions because it has to be sound good for the music.
Burst out laughing
They really should have been on Lawrence Welk, he probably would have had them, too--seriously!

Wonderful clip. Okay, not big yuks, but, you know, good for a chuckle or two.
You could play this in some places and they wouldn't realize it was comedy.

Did anyone else see Doc Sevrenson playing trumpet in this band!??
Maters of comedy.

Wow, did Levy and Candy actually PLAY those things?!
Yes they did
Eugene did play accordion, and Candy faked the clarinet very well.
