I have used an embroidery hoop for the frame. Super easy; just make sure to glue it in place so it doesn't shift. An old credit card works great for a squeegy. I also didn't do the whole light-sensitive thing, I just traced my pattern on the screen and painted around it with several layers of mod podge - the super low-budget method. It worked fine for my purposes and the screen is still useable after a half dozen uses.
Ah cool! Yeah I saw some of those tutorials on UA-cam. Might have to try it out too!
THANK YOU FOR THIS
o my God - you are so creative, and think WAY WAY outside of the Box...woh, you inspired me, I have been thinking of to print a shirt for over 2 years, you inspired me Thank you
Genius! I couldn’t find fabric ink, so I tried mixing acrylic paint with some fabric softener. It makes sure the paint isn’t too hard and it is much cheaper than the other alternatives I found. Also, to make sure your ink is heat set properly, lick your finger and lightly tap the shirt.
BLoODY BRiL 🥳🥰
First off, I did NOT think of using a curtain fabric as a mesh for the screens, so that alone can literally save people HUNDREDS in dollars for screen printing materials. This video is incredibly helpful and makes the method so much more viable for anyone on a budget or wants to make graphic tees as a hobby. Second, this was a great tutorial overall, despite being your first time. You went through all the steps fairly well and easily to understand. Great job on the video.
M. Wolf the quality of the print itself and whether it cracks or not is solely up to the quality ink/paint you use.
M. Wolf using cheap ink or paint obviously, but you can be cheap with sheets and that’s definitely the biggest cost in screen printing. Using curtain fabric is a fantastic alternative and won’t degrade quality. Depending only on the how detailed your design is, but that’s very specific on what you want. Like, if you want a full coloured photo. Going cheap for a hobby is completely fine and can still output high quality. You just have to know what not to skimp out on.
after you mixed the emulsion its best to let it sit in the dark with the lid loose for about 3 hours so all the bubbles rise to the top and dissipate. the air bubbles are most likely what caused all the pin holes in your emulsion
Ahh good to know! Thanks!
i took a screenprinting class in college, and i've been wanting to do it at home too cuz i loved it, and your video was some good help! thanks much!!!
Great job! I’ll be attempting the same thing this week and am pretty damn excited! Thank you and keep smiling!

Awesome! ive always wanted to try this but i had no idea where to start or wut to do. Thanks for the inspiration!
I took printmaking for three years for my BFA and I did quite a bit of serigraphy. When you apply the emulsion onto the screen, you want to make the most even layer of glob right at the top, and use the biggest squeegee you can to create a really consistent and thick layer of emulsion. The key is consistency because it will dry evenly. But I really like this video, and I thought I wouldnt be able to use light emulsion chemicals to make screen prints, so this was super helpful!
Thank you so much for saving me lots of money on frames!!! I am excited to make my own screens using canvas!! Ty! Shirt came out great!!
The best part about the video is being along with you as you learn the process. My greatest need in learning screen printing is figuring out the emulsion part. I really loved the idea of taking apart the stretched canvas... I almost got a deal on them, but ended up saving my money for another time because the clock changed to another day and the sale went away. :-( Oh well, I have been trying the picture frames, and will look for some more. Glad I happened on your DIY. Now, on to a few more looking for helpful hints. :-)
Thanks!! I feel like I might actually be able to make my own t-shirts. That was cool 😎 👍🏼👍🏼
Can’t wait to try this. The canvas frame idea was genius
please do more diy, i love your minimalist approach, well done!!!
Wow this whole process is really quite labour intensive, good work
Yeah it all took longer than I thought! But it was fun to do 😊

Hello Mari.! My name's Duncan.! I just came across your video.! It's educational! Thank you! I also have interest in the hobby of screen printing and iron-on printing.! I'm trying to learn more about this creative process from these videos across UA-cam!. It's awesome to have our fellow kiwis explaining the process and international people of course.! It looks like it can be simple/easy/challenging to say the least. I hope to follow your video and Charli Marie's one too.! Low cost DIY type style screen print tasks. My hope and prayer is I can get better in time with these tasks. I find I struggle with them. Iron-on style and screen print although never tried screen printing yet. I've tried iron-on printing and the couple times I've tried my hand, I failed sadly. The image got all shredded/torn looking/faded. I guess you can only try, try again. As I've had to learn the hard way. If at first you don't succeed. Try, try again as the saying goes. I think there's a inspirational quote from a famous iconic sporting athlete. I'll quote him. It was Michael Jordan to be exact and I quote. " I failed many times in order to finally gain my success". The motto is 'never give up'. 'Never say never' quoted from Justin Bieber. Even there's an interesting answer in the word impossible. If you look closely it says and I quote. 'im possible'. Also the word Fail if you break it up it stands for, 'First Attempt In Learning'. As far as designs are concerned, my favorite types I'd want to utilize with apparel/clothing are animal designs, landmark designs, famous people, biblical scriptures, inspirational quotes, motivational quotes, love quotes. Amongst others. I could go on. There are options out there. Varieties.
Wow this is awesome! Overall great job.
i like to cut thin strips of clear plastic and put them on top of the edges, and staple...it helps from fabric tearing thru staple.
Awesome video. Thank you!
This was very helpful and encouraging! Thank you!

Wow! I found useful tutorial! 💖💓 Worth spending time.
Doubling up on the transparency worked miracles!
THNX that was so cool, thank you for the info because I just bought a $40.00 (US) kit
Good job, nice design.
you can fill in the pin holes with more photo emulsion and a tiny paint brush. Put it back in the sun to cure and it's ready to go, no tape needed
Nice Mari love it !
Thanks mark!
Great job! :D Looks pretty!
Love this casue Im from nz too n I want to do this
Question:
For step 14, at 11:50, you said we should heat set the design with an iron. How long should you iron the ink for?
This was a terrific video and you made it as understandable as I think this process could be (I am a big beginner).
I'm from Sri Lanka and want to start making my own clothing so this is so helpful!! thank you!
You did great!!!
Cool beans! good job! You go girl! Keep up the good work

Great job! LIked your tutorial....
Thanks for the video 👍🏾 where did you buy the supplies in NZ? Thank you
Hello very good video i have 2 questions, does the fabric that you used works? And the paint is’t good? Thank you
This is a great tutorial. Videos likes these are the reason I found you. I was looking at g7x reviews a long time ago and yours was the one the leaned me over to buying it. So yeah. I've been subbed since that video. I love your travel videos and videos like these as well. If you got anymore ideas, just make em. Also that "shake it like a Polaroid picture" bit had me laughing haha take care Mari
Wow thanks for sticking around that long! Glad you like this type of video because I do too! Ill have to make more 😊
So cool im going to give it a go
Cool! Let me know how it turns out!
Helpful and adorable
Great work Mari. Cool design!
Very cool!
Hey, nice video. I am trying this out now. I just wanted to know, is it good to cure the print using the ironing machine. Did the ink on this tshirt last long enough?
Wondering how the tape held up, :D please let me know. Thanks
Amazing!
Awesome video
Would it work if you drew or painted on a plastic sheet instead of printed? Like a clear binder divider or plastic packaging?
Wow you used a canvas for screen? Great diy
After you spread the ink onto your screen, how long do you have to expose the image onto it?
Is it possible to let it sit too long?
Where do you get the t-shirts? What kind of shirts do you recommend?
On what kind of paper do you print the design? Does it require a special ink or something
Great video. How much money did u spent for the entire project
I Love it
Thats some real number 8 wire mentality. Well done, I think some ink spots just make it more original, could be your trade mark. I would buy one with ink spots.
That’s so sweet of you to say! But hopefully I don’t have to resort to that!
I was thinking the exact same thing!
awesome. Well done great first try xxx
Does this method last as long as a real screen press? Or do the designs fade easily?
Love it👍
Dumb question but seriously , if I purchase the screen print put together already. Do I need the emulsion and degreaser as well?
Nice work
How long do you leave it out for in the sun when you put it in the garage bag?
This seems great but i got a question.
Is it coming out at washing?
how many washed can be used on that t-shirt without affectiv the design what you did on him?
can i ask how long did you burn the design into the sunlight?
i love it
WOW , im going to start making my own T-shirts this year to cut the cost in my business , and im going to for sure use your techniques , thank you .im Bernice Brown Form RIALTO CALIFORNIA
Loved your video.
Nice!
