  • This video goes through what I experienced buying my first mountain bike. I used to not be fat but gained a lot of weight and decided to buy a mountain bike to help me lose weight.
This video will hopefully give you insight on my experience and issues when I purchased my first bike and help you decide which bike you should get and how much you should invest.
I dont know how youtube functions so I'm listing stuff below here to help with searches.
    big buying a bike
    fat buying a bike
    overweight buying a bike

@@blacksnakegray2552 The MTB is Giant Talon XL 29er if I'm not mistaken.
I also bought Giant Roam 3 which is more of a cross bike, great for normal roads (also works in forests), and it handles me very well! No problems so far BUT flat tires are inevitable. I had one a couple of months ago on the MTB.

I am 6’7 and 325! I got a 2022 Transition Spire XXL. I ride jumps, Whistler, and the North Shore without concerns. I did dent my rim from a large hit, but after a true it was fine. I highly recommend getting a full suspension either way and agree on spending a little more so you don’t have to upgrade everything immediately. You are right on the money with the Pivot. Spending a little more equals way less issues and peace of mind.

    • @j_bochh
      @j_bochh 3 місяці тому

@@thanasios1963 got it from North Shore Bike Shop, great group who don’t sell you on meaningless upgrades. After some time, I did upgrade the rims to WR1, upgraded the brakes to Hayes and put enduro cased tires on. All of this to beef up the bike for Whistler though.
I’ve been sticking to Fromme and Seymour as I don’t have a shuttle crew. Took a while to trust the bike on drops and steeper things. Best trail is Ned’s Atomic Dustin IMO!
Take it slow, if you are starting out on the shore like I did, run Fromme a lot to start, get a lot of laps in at the mountain highway parking lot (Bobsled) then progress to lower expresso, lower digger and dreamweaver. From there you can move anywhere you want once comfortable on those.

I know I'm late to the party, but there's something to be said to full Sus for us heavier riders, often wheels, especially the rear, can be a weak point, and give little leeway for messing up, also being heavier we tend to have more of our weight more of the time over it, wider tyres also help, so I would say if you can, a 27.5+ full Sus with the highest volume tyres you can get on there will definitely help all sorts of other breakages!

Thanks for this vid. As a former big guy (morbidly obese) I have a somewhat similar experience, though not as many issues. I used to mtb quite a bit when I was in my twenties but gave it up when i hit my thirties and work took over. Fast forward to 53yo and I gained nearly 160lbs (in April 2022, I weighed 340lbs/5'8"). I decided to hold off getting a bike at that weight because I was concerned about running into problems. Anyway, I lost nearly 100lbs in the past six months and decided to buy a hybrid (cannondale cx4) to get back into biking, figured I'd stay on the roads for now until I lost some more weight Within a month, pedaling up hill, I somehow messed up the cassette and rear derailleur. Now my bike has been in the shop for over a week waiting for some upgraded parts. But because I also live in an area with great trails and mtb, I've been feeling that tug so I decided to buy an mtb (hardtail trek marlin 7...hardtail). So far so good but though I'm 100lbs down now and well below capacity for both of my bikes, I am still concerned especially because I had started using biking as part of my health & fitness routine. I get being discouraged. And although this is two years since you posted, I hope you're still biking.

I ended up with a cannondale trail hardtail and it feels so solid. I can bunny hop 6-8 inches off the ground at the moment, which i feel like is an accomplishment at 350. Ive lost about 18 pounds so far in a month. I am out here to prove big guys can do this shit too. Jumps, wheelies, bunny hops big drops. My bike hasn't failed me yet. Keep riding bro! How much do you weigh? If you are over 300 and ride aggressively, you should be looking at a steel hardtail with a good set of plus size wheels. You'll have to upgrade the rear hub at some point. They all go bad with big guys. DT Swiss 350 hub with 24 POE is your friend. Bikes like the Surly Karate Monkey or Krampus are made for big boys.

I highly recommend fully suspended fat bike, if you are really heavy. I got a Maxx Huraxdax from Germany with Manitou Mastodon front fork and FOX dps evol rear shock, and all other quality parts and the biking is such a joy. You can take it to a suspension specialist to make it great for your weight. And if you love fast, get an electric version.
P.s. fully suspended fat bikes are great for big riders because they spread the weight, so the rigid parts don't break.

Great vid man. I'm bigger. Started at 271 pounds this spring. I've lost some weight, but more importantly I have lost many inches in fat. I'm not so worried about what the scale says. What makes me feel good is my improved cardio and stamina. And that the hip pack I bought.... Well it barely buckled around my waist when I got it. Now I have several inches of slack in it. Your points on bikes and parts are spot on. I got a mid level full suspension. Ive broken and replaced around $600 worth of parts in just 3 months. Thankfully I knew that would be the case when I got the bike. "You're really gettin after it" is what the guys at the shop tell me. Thanks for the content for the big people.

It looks like the weight you lost was only catabolic. Meaning, your body cannibalizing itself and its protein stores. To lose weight effectively, we must mind our macros (carbs, aminos, protein, omegas). Supplement heavily before, intra, and post exercise. Stay in an aerobic zone as much as possible. No oxygen, no burning fat for energy. Anaerobic sprints are a great way to redline your metabolism, but you have to scale into them. Note that building muscle is the best way to lose weight. Building muscle in the areas you want to lose weight specifically. Consider this as an excellent combination approach to thrown in with your cycling. In regards to all your components stripping, you will want to get a few tools and check the torque on your bolts regularly. Eventually, they all should come out entirely and will need cleaned and lubricated (with grease). Tedious-but it's for the best. Hope this helps.

345lb big guy here! Guys, expect to pay in the thousands for a good quality bike out the gate. Due to our size and weight, don't cheap out on your bike. My bike is a Niner Sir 9 with upgraded Hope Hubs, Spank Oozy Rims, and DT Swiss spokes. Yes, pretty close to $3,000 but I feel safe and secure on it. It's also Reynolds 853 steel and is very light. If you don't have the cash, look to the Mongoose Fat Tire bikes as good options if you're in the 300lb and above range. You'll be happier in the long run vice buying something in the $500 and upgrading. Average bike weight limits are 250 lbs for MTB's. Start with a Fat Tire Bike and ride pavement or smooth trails until you drop the weight. He's right...you'll need to upgrade the rims, spokes, and hubs. Run with a 29" tire with 32--40 spokes if possible. Good luck...cheering for us all.

This video is exactly why I'm going to forget about getting a 'normie' bike from a bike shop and just go online for a cheap fat tire bike that's rated for more than my weight; that way I'm not out $900 for a bike that I'm going to have to replace every part on anyway..
In my experience shopping around, bike shops don't know nor care about the considerations for very heavy riders and would rather just keep you coming in for repairs than getting something that is going to work for you

Wow, I had the same Fuji and at 250 lbs, I broke all the same stuff you did: rear wheel, multiple cassettes, the crankset multiple times, like you upgraded to the same. Eventually, the frame cracked at the seat stay/seat tube welds. Fuji replaced the frame and I sold the bike. I would not recommend an entry level MTB to someone at even my weight. But, it's that entry level MTB that gave me the love of mountain biking and therefore justify spending thousands and thousands of dollars on bikes that do hold up! Good video.

This is the reason I will always always ALWAYS buy from a local bike shop. I am 6'5" 325 lbs (hopefully slimming) and they walked me through what to adjust/change on my 22 inch frame Haro 29er I bought from them. I bought that bike because of my height and the bike size. I have done mostly gravel trail/bike path riding on it with the lone exception of this past summer when I went with some super-healthy friends to a ski resort and rode down the hill twice. That was fun, but again I didn't take the nutso paths like they did. I took the leisurely pace trail down.

Thanks posting this. I always feel like an oversized alien on the trails. I was about 275 when I started riding again, now at 240. I bought a talon 4 over two years ago and upgrading to a grand canyon 7. I'd say for anyone who's bigger spend as much as you are comfortable with. Bike parts are definitely one thing where you get what you pay for. Recommended cheap upgrades: going tubeless reduces alot of vibration and harshness, also bigger rotors and adapters are way cheaper than a new brake system.

I think when you're 340 or so which is exactly where I am too) the temptation is to say "what can I do?", when the real question needs to be "how can I get to what I want to do?".
Second, great video - I'm right in the middle of a bike search in the UK and this has been a huge help. Cyclist mates had advised me about upgrading the wheels so it was great to see confirmation of that, plus a couple of other potential weak points to look out for. Thanks so much for posting!

I'm in the same boat you are man 310 lb I used to be 185 lb halfway through 2020 I was 185 lb as of now I'm 310 lb and I just started biking again for about 2 months now the setup I have is just a standard 26 inch medium size bike with 26-in tires on double wall aluminum rims it's not an expensive setup but I do have a little bit of extra that I've put into it i converted it into an electric bike 90% of the electric bike parts are all handmade all the wiring was done by hand the only things that were not handmade was the motor and the battery everything else was handmade even down to the spokes that hold the motor in the rear so I'm with you I go out and write as hard as I can not turning on the electric motor and then once I can't take it anymore my quads I have a thing called pedal assist if I can't even do it with pedal assist I'll turn on the electric bike so I can finally get home that's what I've been doing for the past couple months and it takes hard work takes a lot of hard work when I first started out I would go out guns blazing and then be so tired I couldn't even get back home but I would have to wait an hour or two just to get the strength to pedal back home but I am proud of your success you are a true success story it needs to be more like you I clicked on your video and I loved it I loved your story congratulations on your journey my friend

Hey Ryan, I just found your channel. I was looking forward to viewing your vids over the last 2 years and was disappointed to nothing posted since 2021/21. I really wanted to see your transformation. I hope all is well with you and still getting after it. I’m a big rider, 6’0 265lbs. I used to be a competitive rider in my 20’s, racing. My son is pushing me to get back in riding. If you you have some update vids from the past 2 yrs we would love to see your progress. Stay well , Ryan.

Hey Butch, Thanks for the message. I'm disappointed too. I had an injury that put me off of riding for a couple of months and then fell out of it. I'm about to start posting again. I don't have any update on the weigh loss, I have gotten stronger with riding itself though.
Good luck to you with getting back into riding, I hope you do not fall off like I did.

Thanks for the video! I just got into mountain biking as well. Being a bigger guy (6'1" 295), I settled on a used bike owned by a buddy with a similar build - 2011 Trek Marlin. Needs a tune up, but just really working on riding right now so it's been in town, beach and some desert riding with a buddy. Went up to some bike trails at Silverwood and I need some experience before I even try those - it was nuts! Plan on hitting Skypark beginner trails to see what that's like. Keep it up! You have a "big" brother in arms here rooting for your success! If you're ever in SoCal reach out! RIDE ON!

If your a bigger guy save your money and buy something that will hold up well. Im at 295 lbs and was worried about breaking my bike so I went and bought the Canyon Stoic 4, its $2000 but its suppose to be a legit enduro hardtail. When I saw the guys that know how to ride sending that thing up over gaps etc I figured that should be strong enough for me.

Been doin' New River Bike trail the last few months, averaging about 50miles a week there. Regardless, the trail was way different. I am in Surprise and would love to progress more. You sir is a huge inspiration. I just got back into the sport sometime back in fall of 2020 after a 4 year break and boy am I out of shape; I just realized that yesterday too hah! I can't even ride my full squish bike because it's too heavy so I have to ride my hardtail and even then I'm still struggling on climbs and descends. Nearly forgot how tough the sport is. Happy riding and safe shredding!

A couple of things. I was well over 300lbs in college and had the exact same crank arm issues you did. It's the square taper that doesn't play well with bigger guys. As you see with your Pivot they most likely use a SRAM Dub instead which doesn't have those issues. I quit riding after that happened and didn't pick it back up until about 15 years later. I waited until I hit 298lbs and went with a less expensive bike. Luckily I didn't have issues with the square taper but since then I've moved on to better bikes like you. One thing I did for extra safety was I went tubeless and added Cushcore to the wheels. I've been doing this since about 2016 so if you ever need any advice feel free to message me and we can trade stories. Keep at it and congrats on your weight loss.

I want to start mtn biking again also. Haven't done it since the 90's. I just started a diet and bought a fat tire ebike to help me get started biking again. I weighed 356 at the start and I've lost 16lbs. I'm 56 years old and I need elbow surgery but really want to buy a good old fashioned pedal MTN bike and start riding again. Going to save up for another year before I purchase a bike. I will just keep riding my ebike for now and keep trying to lose weight. I live in Palm Springs Ca. I would like to come to Phoenix and ride with you when I get a bike.

thanks bro. this was informative. I was weighing 400 pounds at the beginning of the year and manage to lose 60 pounds thus far from diet and steady state cardio. Now I want to get into mountain biking. Not so much trails just yet but just to ride as I enjoy being outdoors. I couldnt see spending $1k but definitely will look for an entry level and upgrade the wheels as you suggested. Who knows a year from now but this was really informative. Thanks again and happy riding.

Im 5'8 and weigh 120kg, which Im short and heavy. I started with a large Trek Roscoe which was rugged to take my weight, wide 27.5 2.8 tires feels steady, but also found a bigger frame made feel more stable and safe. I have upgraded to XL Trek Slash with 29 2.6 tires. Its way too big for my height which is medium, but again because Im heavy feels alot stable. Also because its an enduro bike with a slacker head angle, I feel more safer going steep trail because my heavy backside is more on the back of the bike. To counter the long reach, moved the seat forward and pull handle bars back, and feels great riding any trails. My next upgrade is to get 4 piston brakes so I can use less brakes for my heavy weight which will allow me to go faster

Got a Scott aspect at about 320 pounds and I've lost 14. Haven't broke my rims or any of my parts so it looks like Fuji uses cheaper components. We're all too heavy for almost all the coil suntour forks they put on the bikes so my biggest recommendation for people who want to get a MTB and are heavy is to get a bike with an AIRFORK and make sure its from a reputable brand. I plan on riding this XCM until it busts but Im tired of it clapping on me so much even with it preloaded all the way up.

And this is why people who are serious bikers spend the money we do on our bikes… the average person will never understand why a bike can cost thousands of dollars.. but when you ride hard and want something that can take abuse, and keep on trucking you get what you pay for. Simple as that.
