  • So just how much harder is it being a heavier rider? Well we measured Neil's power output, heart-rate and time over the same course and then sent Neil into a cafe to put on some weight and repeated the experiment to find out!

It's no secret that weight is an important factor in cycling performance, just ask our colleagues at GCN. But of course, they were reluctant to throw their legs over a mountain bike and so we had to strap a bullet proof vest on Neil to find out.

Three years ago, at 170kg, i wasn't almost even able to sit on a bicycle, now at 115kg I can do 60-70km rides with over 1000m of climbing. Slowly, but I can.

    • @MartinTeerly

At 152kg I was able to ride a bike for 7 minutes. 😂
Back in 90s I weight about 70kg and I rode MTB on hardtail. Then i got fat all the to 152kg. I decided to start riding again to loose weight. In 2018 I got hardtail again and as I said 7 minutes was my max 😂
Now I'm ok to ride 20 miles but this lockdown doesn't make me any better

Do a reverse of the experiment. Train for a month carrying the extra 15kg. Then do the test again and see how the figures differ weighted to unweighted. It may show a way of more effective training.

Global Mountain Bike Network Very fit or very injured probably. Training weighted could be a useful tool (particularly weighted climbs) - but training weighted all the time probably isn't smart. You probably want to ride the same way you race a good percentage of the time so that you're used to that setup and how it feels come race day. I can imagine that if you were used to descending 15kg weighted and then tried to ride without the weight you'd feel very off. Training specificity and all that. Your bike would be taking a hammering too and you'd have to make quite major changes to your suspension and tire pressure whenever you took the weighted jacket on or off. I think you're probably better off training normally.

As someone who is about 6 and a half feet tall and almost 300lbs. (The least I have weighed since junior high), I can tell you, we lardos ride slower, jump less, spend far more money and time for injuries and repairs, and can't climb worth a damn. I still love riding, though.

I started mtb 5 moths ago and have lost several inches on my waist things are getting easier gears that I struggled with on a up hill are now too easy. Yes my muscle has gone up that is why I didn’t mention lb lost but I find I don’t huff and puff as much on climbs and I find I can ride longer now. I am looking forward to losing the rest of excess weight.

If the extra weight is fat that would be a reasonable test. If it was muscle we would be starting to compare a climber to a sprinter. Very different performance outcomes. But no powerful sprinters will ever beat a lightweight fit sprinter up a hill.

Tend to find that larger guys do have more power available to them for the short and sharp punch sections due to the everyday strain of carrying around more weight. Smaller guys may not have that same level of peak power but it’s not as hard to shift the weight.
This is all circumstantial evidence I have found from dropping 3 stone since I started riding.

Coming from a guy that is overwieght and riding,
Being type II diabetic I let myself go and was about to lose my job over it.
so i absolutely had to change 100%
I lost 32 pounds in 10 weeks, very low carb diet.
Started riding again for the exercise, and i use to race motorcycles off road when i was younger.
So I had the skills requried for Mtn biking.
Struggle when i first stared very much.
Well as the weight came off i didn't notice much at first. BUT
Now my test loop with some climbing but nothing for a regular rider,
before i would be in first gear, and struggle. Now I can do the
route on the second chain ring 3x7 and second on the rear,
I'm not as winded/tired doing it, people have to remember
a fat guys body that is mildly active is use to carrying the
extra tonnage around so as you lose it you really start to
see it as you have the strength in there just being used up
    carrying your own fat.
so your test is a little skewed because your rider was not
acclimated to carrying the extra weight already, he muscles
are toned and to his light mass.
    Great video regardless. Thanks

It’s so much easier to ride when you’re lighter! I lost 30kg over a year and it just transforms riding. Yeah, bigger riders can be very fast on the climbs and downhill, but they’d still be faster if they weighed less. Plus, if you’ve ridden while heavy then lost weight, you’re used to hauling up hills, it feels so much easier after. It almost takes away the pain because you can’t help but think about how different it feels!

GMBN did not claim that this is a perfect test, but it is indicative of the additional challenge involved with carrying extra weight, in a general sense. There are other permutations, but overall, it reinforces the reality that most top cyclists are as light as they can reasonably be.

  • @lux-3001
    @lux-3001 6 років тому +1

GMBN, you guys seem to have the equipment and/or resources available to do the tests. I would recommend you choose a 100 kg fit cyclist and a 60 kg fit cyclist. Choose them on their ftp datas to determine their W/kg and then go measure the power data, the oxygen consumption, heart rates when going uphill at the same moving speed. Then you can set the percentage of their FTP they should stick to and send them on the same course. In this way you will see how much more work a heavier rider needs to put out and how much slower he is for the given effort. In addition you can measure with the same cadence and power and see what happens. For contrast, do the flat course where momentum plays a role.

      @CaptainShiny5000 6 років тому +20

@jan the biking man Oftentimes more fatty people also have more muscle mass than skinnier people which makes up for it to a certain degree. At least if you are somewhat active or even work out a little bit. During my weightloss of about 30 kg in total (so far) I lost about 10kg of muscles as well as 20kg of fat despite working out pretty hard. According to my trainer that's quite normal.

    • @vincechan259
      @vincechan259 6 років тому +10

But the experiment is about weight not fat so if it's about power and weight then surely the experiment isn't valid as he's not used to the strain of and extra 15kg of dead weight. Also if it's about 15kg of dead weight fat then it's more a question of fitness obviously if you carry more fat than what your optimal functioning weight your gonna struggle. So what's the experiment all about?

Keep in mind that while you did bump up to 85kg, you were still a fit 85kg rider, not one who sat around for months without getting on the bike. That being said, this is a very good test. I like this test because what it seems to really show is what it's like to have extra weight against your body, same as if you have a gut. I'm sure the results would vary a bit if you had that weight on the bike itself, so it's nice to differentiate the two.
Also what a charming bloke outside the cafe. :p

Another thing to think about if you're carrying around excess adipose / fat: That tissue also needs to be oxygenated as well and takes away from the muscles that are (obviously) meant to make go forward.
VO2 max will improve (up to a point) if excess fat is whittled off.

I think the good question to answer would be if adding weights on body for training is equal (or better, or worse) to training in high gears.
Curious what is the difference between these training styles. Only could find info in old forums with two opinions: 1) I do the training with weights and I feel/see results; 2) better go incline faster or in higher gears.

;o} I'm the big tall guy on the trail and dragging all that extra weight does make a difference. Now, just for encouragement for us clydesdales, 30 years ago when MTBing was in it's infancy, I started MTBing at 118kg. A few of my riding chums were semi-pro riders. Yes, I was always catching up/them waiting for me at points. Well, one day while we were riding, I wasn't dropping out of the pack and I wasn't the last up the hill and I was also 102kg. now. I was riding with semi- pro riders. They noticed this to. So perseverance is necessary. If you have extra long legs like me, 40" , a 185-200mm crank will go a long ways in giving that little extra leverage needed to haul us truck sized guys up hills easier. Great video, reminds me of what it takes for us plus sized guys to ride. BTW, get bike fitted, it'll make a huge difference in being comfortable on a bike.

That just gives me a great idea: Riding with a weighted vest. Because the body will adjust to the extra weight and get stronger, I believe what's a win-win. Train enough with it, get stronger, then take the vest off and... Hmmm... I'm gonna have to find out. Awesome vid and great tips, as always!

Interesting compassion. As an amateur rider who does not look for every single gram in my bike, and as a tech nerd, I think that the best option for a hard tail is a Rohloff. It would be definitely awesome to see a comparative between an XX1 with their 500% vs a Rohloff with a 526%. Even more awesome would be a Pinion P1.18 vs Rohloff vs XX1...
Looking forward to see statistics about Gearboxes

Realistic for "overweight" or out of shape. In that state, you would likely have less lean muscle and strength in core and legs (and everywhere), and this is well replicated with the vest. Your body is tuned to your weight, and increasing it without adding strength will force you to work harder. Scaled up with a person that is larger and stronger, they should see a similar effort and power. Nice video.

Hi Neil and team! Love your videos (let's get that out of the way :)) REALLY!
Anyways... Was wondering if you want to add another parameter to your test? The time spent on the seat. I suspect you may not be able to put the power down simply because due the extra weight, you are spending more time resting on the seats.
I am a very unfit rider so that's what I feel is my problem. I tend to rest on the seats and not adopt the 'attack' position. Which makes it hard to control the bike and also to power the bike.
    Thank you.

According to Strava, on most of the segments I ride, I am well down the list but within my weight category doing a lot better and as I briefly scan some of the segments I ride, very few riders over 90 kilos are occupying leading places. Whatever the video proves by adding weight in this way, what we can see is that heavier riders are by and large slower.

This is actually an excellent comparison of a rider wearing super light shorts, shirt, helmet, and no pads vs a person that's fully kitted up in heavy clothing, pads, and backpack with hydration. I notice this difference every time I go out without my backpack and pads. If you're looking to train harder, kit up.

the problem with this test is the weight isn't distributed along the various limbs. if you have a taller rider the weight will be mostly in their legs and rear end. if you have a bulkier, shorter rider their arms and mid section will be larger. so the results are going to be drastically varied based on body types.

  • @petedog9581

Power to weight ratio goes down with more mass, but your body adjusts and grows stronger to compensate for eight gain, to a certain extent. It's not like eating a bowling ball and going to ride. That is essentially what he is doing.

To get a really good comparsion in my mind would be as following. Get your Watts per Kilo, and upgrade your weight with an ebike which can be tuned to put the watts in that the extra weight needs. So we get like 2 people with the same skillset and the same power output per kilo but different system weight. But i think you would need a special software to get this programmed into a normal ebike. In the way this test was done its more like an overweight person not riding bikes normally vs Neil. A heavier rider will normally have more power output because his body is used to the weight.

I'd be interested in seeing the comparison between these results and the bike weight results as the difference in where the weight is changes your body's efficiency. Maybe even heavy bike vs heavy body vs heavy pack.
I have also wondered why more people don't do hyper-gravity training for cycling/mountain biking. It's incredibly common place for a number of other sports with similar focus on strength to weight ratios (e.g. rock climbing).
    Awesome content. Cheers!

Just wondering, although it's a hardtail, have you tuned the suspension before the second ride to match that big increase in weight? Even on a cross country trail, having it too soft will make it much harder to ride.

I am not a weight weeny . I believe that rather then make the bike lighter I will just get stronger and it has paid off. I have great endurance a strong heart, big lungs , superhero legs and my upper body is not bad either.. One of my favorite things on the trail is when a guy in lycra on a gravel bike tries to flex and blast past me ( without announcing his approach mind you ) on the trail while am loaded down with bikepacking gear and moments later I am wheel hugging him with out braking a sweat and he can not shake me. My backpack probably weighed more then he did but It makes me chuckle.

I do all-day rides in the mountains with friends so we have to carry everything that we possibly will need with us, including water, food, tools, and DSLR. The load is more than 8kg. I got used to it, but at the same time, I lost 10kg over the past year through dieting. I'm not sure if training with heavier weights will yield the kind of results people expect, but losing weight makes significant difference in my overall stamina and strength.

  • @Bwes1967

As a few others have pointed out, this 'test' isn't even a little bit accurate. If you're light then that's what you're body is used to working with. The same applies to being heavy. If a heavy person all of a sudden gains 50lbs in 5 minutes.. well, you know. As a bigger guy I do think there is an effect but you can be a bigger person and be in reasonably good condition. One thing to consider is the difference in balance that bigger people deal with vs. smaller people but again... we're used to it.

Heavy is 185 pounds? Try being 300 pounds (136kg)! I have already lost 80 pounds and still losing, but us CLYDES are still out there trying! I live in a very hilly area along a mountain range. What has REVOLUTIONIZED my bike life is #ELECTRICBIKES ! I'm not talking the throttle no-pedal bikes, rather the PEDAL-ASSIST bikes like the #Boschebike - equipped bikes. I ride a #Trekbicycles Police hardtail with a Bosch Performance Speed motor (essentially a #PowerFly 5 hardtail). This bike has changed my life! Literally... The previous insurmountable hill routes are now conquerable! Best of all, I can join with other cyclists in rides and not get dropped the first big hill, or cause them all to wait for me to catch up, and I can keep up with them. At 53yo, that is LIFE TRANSFORMATIONAL!
But, my weight does make me FAST on the downhills! Scary fast sometimes... And yes, a Clyde bike must often be custom built with beefy parts. But a big shout out to #TrekBicycles for making bikes capable of 300 pounds and for their awesome e-Bike efforts!

I appreciate the test, but would like to see one with an actual heavy person. Compare the geek outputs between someone new to the sport (like can ride mod/intermediate trail) and Niel or Blake or Rich. Ideally, the noob should be someone trying to get healthy who's day job is something where their work centers around a desk/office (computer guy/administrator/secretary). Bonus points if you could do his and hers versions. I have a feeling the stats are gonna be wildly different between a fit pro doing a test with extra weight vs regular Joe who's "grown" into their body.
