- This is a video of The Cavaliers performing "Africa" by Toto. This performance was a part of The Cavaliers encore performance after winning first place at the Michigan City DCI Competition.

The band brasses the lightning down on the field
I love it in this key. It makes the song sound more triumphant and like it has a bigger purpose.
You relise that key has effect on the song. It will effect tamber of the instruments slightly but not much else. Unless you have perfect pitch or are comparing this side by side to the original, you will not be able to tell any difference. The Arrangment/orchestration will make the biggest difference.

Well, somehow I doubt that because most people I know who have perfect pitch want to crawl up and die in a hole when they hear an arrangment in another key. Even if you did, it would not change the texture of the song. It is all orchestration.

Randi Abel I'm a baritone player so I'm included in the low brass way of taking attendance: when our drum major calls your name just scream. Everyone knew when my name was called last year because I was the only girl so my voice was much higher than the rest of the LB section
calie cat lol my band just had our drum majors go around and scan a bar code that was made for every single person during our morning stretch block. It helped save time to practice on our show.
Randi Abel I ment on the bus on the way to competitions we don't waste time with attendance during practice. Our band directors will just watch for people who come in late and ask if they have a good explanation for people who are just gone my guess is they just double check to make sure they've been gone all of practice and aren't skippinv, being fitted for uniforms, or working with a leader then interrogate those people to make sure they didn't just decide practice is suddenly 'optional'

Paul Allen he’s talking more about the individual attacks and the fast run section. It’s just not clean. That being said the power is definitely there and it’s still an awesome encore

The first time I ever saw this video I was in 8th grade, completely uneducated about DCI, literally had no clue the Cavaliers were one of the best corps, and didn’t even know that I’d be playing mellophone next year at the high school (as a French horn player). Genuinely thought it was a high school band and I remember being completely blown away. I came back to this video cause I’m a third year mello and I’m utterly in love with this sound. I wanna try out for a couple corps in the next few seasons and it all started with this video. Music can change people.

Now, THIS is good music, and FUN. I wish more corps would do encores like this. I may be "old school", but I MISS the old days of corps when corps performed covers (yes, you can call it "other people's music"). Corps has gotten to "avant-guarde" and new-age for me. Trying to name the theme of a show is becoming comical..."Ladies and gentlemen, this year's show is entitled, 'Cylindrical Omniscience: Man's journey through the catacombs of the cerebral stratosphere'...". I mean, really, come on.

This is another reason why I’m learning Mellophone even tho I have already learned a lot like Transposing from Alto & Mello and also play an instrument in the Key of F so about does it Almost. But I’m definitely thinking about switching within now & Next Fall of 2022. Bc I’m also looking forward to being a Marching Southerner next Fall as well.

Not making any comparison here but a little corps I taught back in '83 from Arlington, MA used this tune as an OTL (remember those?) That bridge section was a mallet feature and for a little corps with just 18 drums and 20 horns those kids played the bejeezus out of it.

The Cavaliers actually went to my hometown of Adrian, Michigan in June of 2018 before their first showing in Detroit. So I got to hear their show early. Also, my dad was a Bluecoat, so I know what this is.
When the whole band started playing is way more majestic than the actual song. Congrats to the cavaliers.
