I have a high-paying job, but I'm facing the same challenge you are. My team lead keeps telling me I need to work harder. Because of this, I can't seem to switch off and always have work on my mind. I need this job to pay off my debt, and I plan to quit eventually once it's all settled.

Exactly 6 months and 19 days ago, I quit my 9-to-5 job and embarked on a journey to build my own software products. Over this period, I successfully developed several software products that now generate passive income, enabling me to sustain a comfortable lifestyle here in Sri Lanka, where living costs are lower than in Europe. As I continue to explore and travel, I've identified promising ideas that are ripe for product development.

Oh Iris. I'm sorry that you got to the point where you felt the need to quit but taking care of your mental health and physical health comes first. As I've said before I spent 38 years in the IT world as a programmer up to a systems analyst. Long hours and stress are the norm. Lots of impossible deadlines and always feeling like you were at work even when you weren't does take a toll on you. I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do going forward. I hope that you will continue to post videos regardless of what you end up doing. You have great content and I have always enjoyed watching your videos. Take care.

But after 1 year of travelling, i quit and for the past 6 Monhts, i was doing nothing. Now, i started a company around AI and it feels exciting again :) Good Luck on your future!

I felt this a few months ago, the same as you described while working remotely. But then I got sick because of dengue. That gave me 3 weeks to recover and reevaluate my working style. Soon after joining, I asked my manager to transfer a lot of responsibility that didn't align with my goals to other team members. That gave me room to breathe and I also focused more on my anxiety issues. I don't how it worked but I made myself aware of my insecurities and so some of those anxiety also melted away. It was a slow and gradual process for me.

Wow. That sounds just like me these past few weeks. I don't have anything to fall back on though, and I'm probably about 10 years older than you so I'm super behind in my retirement savings because I wasted my 20s not worrying about money.
By the way, if you work harder so that your teammates have an easier time, your boss will just give them more work to do. lol. The reward as a software engineer for being productive is more work.
I do have 1 month of paid vacation in a few weeks though.
Good luck. Consider staying in the field, your salary is projected to be very high once you get senior dev level experience. You started way younger than me in SWE. You could probably semi-retire well before 40, maybe even in your 30s to purse other ventures.

Since ai started to work at early age as a graphic designer, going through in-house, advertising, publishing and then corporations. This profession stopped being "creative" or even "visual communication" but just deatheline,, and making people "happy" or compromisog so many aspects of good design, I decided to take brake, and look at it from distance without being emotional. Enough is enough. Still like esthetics, design, and architecture, but with the distancing myself. There are far more important aspects of life than just design, and work etc. Simple.

The brutal reality in the Tech Industry, is that working every day with laptop/PC screens leads to burnout of our eyes, brains, back pain etc...also in parallel with job, we must constantly learn new things in our free time, reevaluation skills that keep us competitive to job market..so 8 hours in work and another 2-4 hours for extra skill advancement = 12 hours Eye/brain burn out daily!!! But at the end of the day, I think simpler jobs in nature make us more excited and happy. Jobs in Tech besides money are very ruthless in our physical condition so yeah...it's not all about money = success. I think success = to be happy and calm at the end of the day!
    Peace out!

hey there! I was lucky enough to have enough savings from working as a software engineer to take an adult gap year, I am also spending a lot of time living back home with my family instead of traveling as much as before to minimise costs. In the meantime I am doubling down on creating UA-cam videos and landing brand deals, I am only making a couple hundred dollars per month from that right now but hoping it grows at some point. Other than that I am trying to get a job in content creation or video editing. Honestly I am still figuring things out so can't give you too much advice but I want to be transparent - hope that answers your question!

Unpopular opinion, but you just need to be mentally tougher. No company is going to pay you six figures for you to sit at a desk to be happy and "pursue your dreams". I sit at my desk 8 hours a day, I listen to music, listen to podcast and I write code. I am EXTREMELY privileged. DEAL WITH your mental health, don't run away from it
