Exploring a Massive Abandoned Roman Catholic Church in Chicago

- This Massive Roman Catholic Church in Chicago Closed down several years ago. The old parishioners pray outside every Sunday to save the beautiful church. It was supposed to be repaired but the developer dropped out of the project after realizing that it would cost too much. It has been sitting abandoned ever since. Sadly, the city wants to demolish the church.

That is a tabernacle not a lock box.
And the tabernacle is the place where the body of christ has to be put all the time.
Imagine sitting in that stunningly beautiful church every Sunday. It is like a museum
Even it is abandoned, it still shows its beauty.
I beleive the Traditional Latin Mass can attract people to come to this church again.
The church was closed in 2019 so that explains why it still looks good. There’s currently talks about giving the church a landmark status but only time will tell.
At one time the Archdiocese of Chicago was the second largest in the USA ( after New York ) , but there has been a demographic change in the Catholic population in terms of older people of Italian and Irish descent in the East and North of the USA dying out or their descendants no longer practicing and instead the church in the South and West in Texas and California has expanded with immigrants from Mexico and Latin America in general . The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has replaced Chicago as the second largest in the USA .
I agree although unfortunately I believe this will in the end be left to our children
Kids are atheists now, they want rationality, not religion.
Yes.. Amen.. Despite those in power trying to destroy it...❤
U guys need a crash course on catholic and what is what in churches. I see polish or Czech printing. It's such a shame that items were not cleaned out better and donated to operating churches. I'm glad that it hasn't been sold to skate boarding like one in st louis. Sacrilegious!
It is an old Polish church. The writing is in Polish. Stunning!
I saw the skateboarding church video. You're right! Complete show of disrespect.
If all the trades in that area got together. Tuck pointers, roofers masons this church could be restored..
That church ,I remember is right in the pilson area...
Dear God in heaven, rescue this treasure for the Glory of Your Divine and most Worthy Son. Amen.

Can anyone please help me understand why these beautiful Churches are abandoned and left to ruin itself? It is really heartbreaking to see these beautiful Churches being abandoned...
The Archdiocese of Chicago is an especially dismissive and unsupportive diocese. The bishop doesn’t care too much about preserving the beauty of churches like these so he doesn’t provide funds for renovation… that’s usually the case for neglected Catholic churches.
@@kuna5624 Thank you so much buddy for your reply... So, you mean the Archdiocese of Chicago and has no accountability to its own Catholic people or to the Vatican???
I don't know much about who controls the church, I always thought that, all Roman Catholic Churches were under the leadership of Vatican and they controlled these Churches by appointing Bishops, Priests, etc.
@@kuna5624 its like destorying inside out
I was asked to be civil before I commented. So I will. These incredible architectural masterpieces are absolutely worth saving and keeping. However, the church is in rapid decline, not only here in America but everywhere in the world where it has been a massive power for many many centuries. Not only are people in general losing their religious beliefs, causing congregations to shrink. Fewer and fewer men are taking up the path to priesthood, fewer and fewer women are becoming nuns, and more and more people are seeing the evil within their system regarding child abuses. Many catholic schools and churches are being abandoned because there aren't enough believers to help pay for the costs of maintenance, and their reuse is difficult at best for potential buyers. So many have been taken by much smaller groups of different faiths, only to continue to deteriorate from lack funding, and then they end up like this. It is very sad to see the buildings decay as they are, but the reasons are pretty obvious.
Church attendance has gone down. Many parishes cannot be self controlling. Sometimes the diocese will close on parishes and have those parishioners go to a nearby church. These churches are like "family" to its people. Sometimes they get even violent protecting it from being closed.
I'm a filipino and I'm a roman catholic. For my support to this church, here is what I would like to say. In the name of Jesus Christ, may God save this beautiful church from being abandoned, so that all the faithful catholics are free to enter and pray there. May God bless this church and be with it. Amen. Praise be to Jesus Christ now and forever! Religious freedom to Roman catholics! Glory to the catholic faith! Respect to all religions! Peace be with you all!

St. Adalbert Church, Pilsen.
Bring the Traditional Latin Mass back, and this church will be restored to its former glory!
May "GOD" OUR FATHER " HAVE MERCY on anyone that desicrates or destroys "HIS" MOST HOLY HOME. Damnation is assured to those who do. Let's pray that all Catholics rescue this Church that is part of the Ancient Church Of The Living "CHRIST".
The church is so beautiful and the words that you showed us underneath on the wall is actually polish
@calebdeguzman6963 Yes. This is St. Adalbert's church has served generations of Polish immigrants and their American-born children.
@7:57 those seats we call it pews instead of benches.
As far as I know, the Society of Saint Pius X gets churches like these to be used again as a proper functioning church. I think it would be good to have them there.
This is exactly what I was thinking. I hope they can adquire this beautiful Church
@@fullblackonit Yeah... aside from that. the Traditional Catholic community has been persecuted for quite some time now... In fact, as far as I know, they're not even welcome anymore in any Churches to hold their Masses. Having this old Church would be such great help.
@@dmez3243 aside from that what? That would be an obvious solution for the archdiocese since the SSPX is not under their jurisdiction and they have their own bishops. They are technically in communion with Rome because they recognize Francis as the pope, but they are independent otherwise. I would have to ask what is the Cardinal waiting for?
If another group will use it such as the fraternity of st Peter (fssp) then the building could be re-designated as a "chapel" or "oratory" instead of a parish. No matter what there's always a solution but my ❓ is what is the Cardinal waiting for??
@@resetsetmefree478 I don't know. It is really saddening that many diocese close old churches and then they would kick TLM out. Why not just give those old churches to the traditional communities instead of selling them off to Protestant, Muslims, etc...?
I totally don't know what they are waiting for... Perhaps it is not easy but it could still probably be done right?
Institute Christ the King does the same as well to my knowledge.
Most Sorrowful Mother, please help us save this church! Amen
Such a beautiful church, such a shame it is abandoned. I would hate to see it torn down. Great video.
Self Destruction of the Pedophile Cult. Good for Humanity. tear it down.
It is so sad to see these churches go. But unfortunately more and more churches in Chicago are being shut down and torn down or converted to apartments. I’m concerned that there will even be any left any time soon😢

@@trebleclef8284 There's churches everywhere out there. Check any other strip mall and you'll find the tax free havens. What you're impressed by is the architecture and interior design of these places. If the book works then these places don't need to exist.
@@trebleclef8284 The problem was that there are too many churches now compared to when they were needed and the church was expanding up to the 1970s . There were loads of Catholic churches built in Northern cities like Chicago , Detroit and Cincinnati to meet the high demand in the 1930s through the 40s and 50s . That demand has dropped and there are just too many churches left with too small congregations and priests to serve them .
Once it has gone, it’s gone. We will never build treasures like this again - not until Jesus returns and restores the golden age, anyway.
Lets pray that this church gets saved! I have noticed that there is a couple of references written in Polish. I wonder if this church was serving Polish Community in Chicago.
Yes, in the early 1900's the church was new and was thriving with Polish immigrants and their families who worked in the meat packing companies on the South Side of Chicago. Through the middle and late 1900s many Polish families remained in the neighborhood and attended the church weekly (myself included). Eventually, many people of Latino heritage also started attending the church in the 2000s until many of the Polish community left the neighborhood. Their was a convent, church and school which was used by thousands of families for over 100 years. It is one of the oldest churches in Chicago that served the Polish community for so long. We still fight to maintain it and keep it open.
Father in heaven send the right people to help restore this beautiful church, it should not be abandoned & ruined by time. Restore & bring hope to the community, Blessings.

What a beautiful place ..how can anyone want to pull it down
The Baptismal Font is the other locked item along with the Tabernacle on the Altar (It is a Dove on top). Used for Baptisms to the faith...
WOWEE ! How beautiful this church still is.
The inscription on the main altar looks to possibly be in Polish. I have known many Polish Catholics from Chicago. The locked “boxes” along some of the walls are depositories for consecrated Communion hosts. The fancy sink with a cherub is a special sink for disposing of left over consecrated Communion wine. The large tub with a locked lid is the baptismal font. The bird on top is a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. The globe with a swing open perforated top and chain is for burning incense to bless the people with during solemn services.; the little bell shaped item next to it is used to extinguish the incense after use. So much rich symbolism throughout this church!
One of the best time capsules right there .
They made these buildings so well, doing it as they thought for God, that today they just can't repair up to the standards of the past. Just costs so much money, plus of course Church Attendance falling all the time, you can see how they will conclude it just isn't worth it. Glad you recorded it before it eventually is forever lost
The Bishop that is permitting this church to fall into disrepair should be defrocked from the church. There’s religious relics in this church that could be lost, stolen or vandalized. How disrespectful to the parishioners who donated millions since it was first built. Where did all that money go. The Archdiocese of Chicago should be audited to see where those monies were spent
I blame the parishioners from not doing a better job of cleaning and selling or donating items better. It's just a shame
Cupich
True up to a point , but if fewer people are attending Mass and there are fewer priests to serve them what is the the Bishop or Cardinal supposed to do ? Fewer worshippers equals less money .
That church is still Holy ground. Sacred. I do hope it is filled one day again.
Muslims are buying it
The structure you asked about thst is locked in front of the crucifixion is qbaptismal font
I hope this church would be saved by the catholics. In India we don't have much churches, and the churches we have are pretty Small and it doesn't look like the western Churches. Seeing this Abandoned church I feel very Sad, This shows the faith of the new generation. I pray that almighty god have grace upon the new generations.
Your small place of worship makes GOD just as happy as any big church
Yes, in India & other poorer nations, there won't be such architecture, though most important is the Spirit.
This is so beautiful, if only my city had a parish this size and beauty. It’s a shame to see it in this state
Saint Adalbert Roman Catholic Church in Pilsen. This is a tragedy as a place of worship of the Holy Trinity, a gathering place of the community of Christ as well as history of the Polish and Mexican cultures. There is quite a detailed Wikipedia page on the church.
Although I am not catholic, that is a baptism font. its such a shame to see these beautiful churches go to ruin.

If I’m correct this is St. Adalbert's Catholic Church built by Polish and Spanish immigrants, and it is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago

I'm not religious but I hate the idea of this beautiful structure potentially being demolished. When I think of the work and craftsmanship that went into creating this great church a long time ago it really saddens me.

7:54 the writing is in polish, beautiful church
I hope something can be done to revive this church. Its walls contain a great history, and it calls all to a future blessed by Our Holy Father.
Amazing it hasn't been looted!
The Organ @5:56 is electronic, seen at 7:05 is the Pipe Organ Console.
Sometimes the Pipe-Organ and gets too expensive to maintain and/or operate.
Usually in Catholic churches, Organs and Choirs are if the back of the Sanctuary. Back in the days of Latin Masses, the priests would face the altars not the Congregation.
Looks like a Model 710 Leslie Speaker Cabinet @6:04
@@craigbrowning9448 I hate to say it, but you're right. A major turn off of mine. If the church does get restored, that singing/operatic box, will be trashed. That does not belong in a church like that. Leslie himself had nothing to do with church organs. WurliTzers were his thing.
It's not a Hammond (thank God). I don't see drawbars, and if it were, the logo is between the two keyboards/manuals.
This looks like an Aolean Skinner or a Moller pipe organ. 4 Manual. I wish I could have seen more of this instrument
@@Jfizz66 Both companies (if I have my research right) built theater organs too. There might/might not be stops like that on the console.
Absolutely stunning architecture used to be Roman catholic and from Chicago what side is it on north or south side of city
You are probably wondering why such a beautiful place would be closed, the demonic will go to all lengths to try and shut down churches and mess with the free will of others in the process. The bird you saw was the dove and the dove is a representation of the holy spirit and the golden box would be the tabernacle.
The large thing is a baptismal font
Yes thank you you save me a post
The Holy Spirit is called as Paracelete and not a pheonix.
Also, in The Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit descends, in the form of a Dove, unto the Apostles, signifying the founding of the Church.
Is called Paraclete if you will.
This looks like OLV (Our Lady of Victory) in Portage Park... 😮

That church is in way too good shape to have been abandoned for "several years "
Do you have an update about this church? Thank you very much.
I was brought up Protestant, but my great-great grandfather was one of the founders of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Chicago. I don't think it's the church shown here. I hope it isn't.
Give it to the SSPX or ICKSP and they will restore and fill it.

Funny huh.
If i lived in Chicago id go just for a look
When did it close down
Thank God vandals have not entered this magnificent house of worship. The damaged wall must be near an exterior downspout with lots of water infiltration from melting and re-freezing causing the moisture to penetrate to the interior. To see any form of decay in a place like this is heartbreaking.
A bunch of misinformation here. The fact is, the city of Chicago wants to save St. Adalbert's church, they declared it an architectural landmark. It is the Catholic Archdiocese that refuses to cooperate with the preservationists. The Cardinal ordered the removal of the stained glass windows, which can be seen in this video. The windows are now gone.
Fyi, "perishers" in description should be "parishioners".
Is it the same as visitation school?
How old is this and what made them abandon this?

Opening books on the alter and trying to open things with the key is not cool. This was a holy place of worship.
Any reason for abandoning the service ?
the Chicago archdiocese merged six local parishes into three
Not enough worshippers or priests . It is happening all over the Western and so called developed world . The growth area for the Catholic church is India ( Kerela to be specific ) and parts of Africa .
