Exploring an Abandoned Church - In the Middle of Nowhere

  • In this explore we traveled to a church built in 1878 that appears to have closed in 1993. This place was in pristine condition and felt unreal being inside. The building just seems to sit frozen in the past as a reminder of a different era.

That the electric is still on and the place is being kept clean ( looks like no dust anywhere aside from the flies in the windowsills in back of the pulpit) I’d say this place is not abandoned in the way we think of abandoned. Somebody is lovingly caring for this place even if it’s not currently being used which is very sad. Such a gem and I’m so glad I got to see its amazing beauty.

My Grandfather was a Lutheran minister in an old farm community Church, much like this one. The area with 2 doors was where he would put on his vestments before the service started. This Church looks well cared for and may still be used for Weddings and funerals.

This is both lovely and sad. I’m from a Mennonite family. Dad’s family were KS farmers and their little Mennonite church was much like this one: small, simple, in the middle of nowhere. However, they’re more similar to the Amish in that their church had nothing fancy or decorative about it, so no stained glass or fancy altar. But otherwise, this could be any one of the churches I attended growing up.
I’m only in my mid-40’s, so it’s disconcerting to see a church like this abandoned, left to UA-cam explorers who consider it “cool” and “vintage”, as if from centuries ago. There’s something deeply sad to see this part of American culture and heritage abandoned.
But it is a lovely little church. Just beautiful.

The bell may have come from Denmark. The inscription translation from Danish reads::
“My tone shall ring out in gladness and in sorrow. My beautiful tone will bring your heart message from the castle of heaven. The congregation that gathers on the Lord and his word. Calling young, old to home here, from earth.”
There are pictures online from when the church was open.

    13:10 I can answer that !
One of the ropes is for swinging the bell back and forth via a wheel, as you'd most commonly expect to hear, and that wheel doesn't look to be in good condition there.
The other rope controls the large hammer you saw, this is for more solemn events such as funerals when slower tolling is expected.
The bell is indeed written in Danish but is definitely made by the Meneely Foundry of West Troy NY - that's the font they used, moulding bands, bell profile (shape), headstock and frame. Perhaps the congregation were of Danish Lutheran descent? It sounds to be in the note G# and therefore would be around 1500lbs by modern standards.
edit just saw that it shows you this.. someone else said it could be from Denmark so wanted to confirm

The Norwegians were mostly Lutheran. They settled primarily in the Dakotas and Montana. They came here to own and till their own farm, using the US Homestead Act. They never wanted to be slave owners.
They carved a life out of the raw prarie. The church is probably Missouri Synod. The stricter branch of Lutheranism. Go there and the people still have their own accent. Hardworking loyal Americans. We are lucky to have them.

    • @trevorn9381

It is not so much a lack of faith it is that nobody lives out there anymore. USDA policy since the 1970s when Nixon's ag secretary Earl Butz who told American farmers to "get big or get out" while simultaneously gutting FDR's New Deal Ag programs that were designed to keep farm families on the land has emptied out the Midwest.
Most of the descendants of the farm families who built this country church in the 1870s probably no longer live in the area, they live in Minneapolis, Chicago or in cities and suburbs on the East Coast or West Coast. Farming didn't pay enough to earn a living anymore so the kids left home and found work elsewhere. The old folks died and their small family farms got bought/leased by a big time corporate farmer who is working thousands of acres.
Pretty soon the congregation dwindled to a handful of people and there was not enough money in the plate on Sunday to pay a preacher. Someone is obviously paying the light bill and doing some maintenance and upkeep on the building. Probably an elderly person or a few people old who have fond memories of growing up in that church. Sadly, when they get too old to do the maintenance, or pass on it will probably fall into ruins.

@mogens1003 slight chance of being Dane.
Could not read entire script completely.
It's not Swede, as the wording indicates.
But regardless of country, they are all the same noble family.
I do need to express my disgust with the purveyors of this video. They basically entered a church, uninvited. That's bad.
Just because the door happened to be unlocked, never meant that they were free to enter.
If the main doors were unlocked, then that means the church is free to enter. Period.
Very disrespectful to sneek in through a side door.

Not two bells but two different clappers, one regular, inside the bell, one outside the bell to toll for funerals

I wonder why it was built in the middle of nowhere. Not many parishioners. Beautiful church still. 😊

I think the room with the old equipment was once the priest's vestry ( Dressing room ), the long mirror on the wall is a clue - Also note how the other door leads directly onto the altar at the head of the church.

The area behind the platform could be used for chior robes, music, preachers robe, if he used one. No Bapistry?
    No dust?

SO many questions. Who pays for the electricity to be kept on? Why is all of that being kept in perfect condition, in place instead of being sold off? How did such a large and seemingly well-attended church dwindle down to the point they shut their doors and walked away?
...and HOW did they end up with two stoves made by companies known for their old RADIOS??? Crosley and Philco are both big names from the 30s and 40s for classic radios. Amazing.

That altar is amazing within the chapel. There should be an effort to pull these out when it top condition and the stained glass and the pews, which can be re-used and re-furbished elsewhere. What a shame left to be ruined by ignorance and vandals. What a beautiful lil spot of God' gift to the world. Woodwork was hand done by craftsman who cared what they produced over 'modern tech'. Why no cross at the steeple' top?
