12:20 As a Subaru owner, I sincerely hope Low Car's center differential is still good after towing like that. The owner's manual recommends flatbed towing, but allows for manual transmission models to be towed with all four wheels still on the ground with the transmission in neutral. If you tow it like you did with the front wheels in the air you will cause the viscous center differential to spin and heat up. Good luck with the rest of this series. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong.

Great series! I owned a Hawkeye WRX. Loved it. Was really reliable and modded well over the years. I progressed slower obviously but ended up with a very fast little car. Beat many STI’s, I think because my 5sp was way lighter and had longer gears. Had to be careful launching. 5sp was fragile. I did pretty much everything Donut did. Mine was more like “mid car”. I also swapped s***** steering rack with quicker ratio unit. I also avoided oil starvation with better pan, baffles and uptake. Money well spent, never spun a bearing after 300,000 kms. Well done team. Since WRX I’ve progressed through an E46 M3, Golf R and finally my dream car 911. 997.2 manual 6sp. All have been fun but the Subie was the most fun. Track days in summer and back road winter driving made the car my favourite. Cost of ownership eventually catches up. Bang for buck you just can’t beat a WRX. The f****** fuel pump on 911 cost more than my whole stage 1 on the Subie. That was just the start. So much cabbage spent on 911 eventually made me hate it and sell it. I’m rocking a 1968 Mercedes 220 now. Slow but so cool.

While the peak HP difference was substantial, it really doesn't tell us much. I would have loved to see the complete dyno graphs. I'll take 30 extra hp from. 2500 to 5k over a massive peak per anytime for almost all applications other than drag racing, and maybe even there.
I've been thinking this for a while, but I really believe a third car which gets the agreed best value parts would be super interesting and add new perspective on the parts together versus separately

Given that the bottom end was completely replaced on both cars and no dyno chec after said replacement, there was no baseline. Also the addition accessories attached to both cars during the turbo swap are not the same therefore again no baseline. In theory both tubos are near equal as far as creating additional power however the cheap unit probably doesn't have the longevity of the higher price model and will probably blow up and take your engine with it.
I can't believe the amount of problems the team had to go thru with Subarus. The whole series now is pretty much tells everyone "Don't own one if you don't have the money"
@@BigSmoke-lf9jk Eh, like anything, you have to be smart about what you are upgrading. You can't just slap a bunch of shit on and expect everything to be okay. Speaking for the STIs, they are perfectly happy with mild-ish bolt-ons, anything up to where the stock injectors max out, about ~300whp. The car will be perfectly fine and reliable assuming you have a quality tune (Pro tune, not OTS), and change your oil at intervals in line with how you drive it. And this aligns with plenty of other brands. Once you try to crank the power past that, you are well beyond stock power levels, and at this point you'd better be investing in better internals/parts to compensate for the additional power. Which also aligns with plenty of other brands. The issue that Subaru has is that everyone under the sun wants to mod it, many do it just plain wrong, the car blows up, people are like "Subaru sucks," they meme the shit out of it, and then the internet jumps on the bandwagon. I promise you, you take care of your Subaru, treat it right, don't be stupid, and chances are extremely high that it will be dead reliable for you.
I feel that Donut needed more support from Subaru professionals working on this platform. There are people who know how to build them in a right way and they are realible when pushed hard, with first try. Mentioning that suggest I HCR in Eastern Europe. IAG in USA. ( I believe there are many more)

Probably would have saved them a few engines by preventing oil starvation that results in worn/spun bearings.
So I think a more fair comparison of the turbos themselves would be to use all of the exact same supporting mods. The supporting mods play a huge part in a turbo kit
I find it mildy entertaining that Nolan struggles with Japanese engines but can swap an American made LS with almost 0 problems when people like me are the exact opposite lol I've only ever driven jdm cars until my "newest" car which is a Chevy cobalt, this engine confuses the crap out of me and its a tiny 4 banger but I get under the hood of my Kia and it all feels so natural to me. I diagnosed and replaced a hidden vacuum line that had dried up and cracked by just trying to start the thing a few years back when it still belonged to my step-dad before he passed away. 2 mechanics couldn't figure it out cuz the engine was "too complicated" and I got it running again at only 22 years old with literally 0 experience in mechanics other than self taught knowledge and Google information. I even learned how to replace a head gasket on a 2004 Honda accord v6 using UA-cam (thank you big man chrisfix you the G.O.A.T.) and didn't mess anything up thankfully. I can't do that on American engines 😂😅

Right? I went down the same train of mods building my Subaru and it took me moths research, acquire parts, tear it down, build back up and get it tuned
Maybe not an ebay version, but I'd take the td05, mitsubishi turbos are extremely durable when balanced and assembled well. I'd go to a good turbo shop to have it assembled and balanced, and I'd also make sure it's a 20g billet compressor wheel with a 8cm2 turbine housing. The td05 will suit the engine better too, much less lag. With the regular wrx 5 speed, I promise both of these cars with blow up the gearboxes. You really need the sti trans to hold all of the torque that these will be making. To be honest, I'd buy a lot of things to modify before a base wrx, a blobeye sti would be so much better and cooler the whole way through, and you would be able to just upgrade fluid, pads, and rotors even for track use. They come with 4 pot 326mms in the front, and the rears are way overkill for the weight.

@@TinoR626to be honest the only thing that made the 1st season of HiLow so entertaining was mostly the actual building of cars and the misc stuff that happened in-between, now they’ve basically removed that entire idea and just tell you what they bought, how it works, do a small building montage with some bits in it, and then show you the obvious results

The problem is with the team, not the Subarus. Poor decisions lead to poor results. But sure. It's the car's fault.
@@hawkeyestiguymaybe they removed the driveshaft? I'm hoping?
subarus are good without upgrades once u start messing w then shit goes south although the boxer engines are obv not the best

If they had filmed this more recently, they could have taken the advice of subscribers on like the first few episodes to get a better oil pan. Lots of people were commenting that the stock WRX oil pan allows oil to stray from the pickup tube under hard cornering like track days, which can be solved with better baffling and more capacity like the Killer B pan. Probably would have saved them a few engines by preventing oil starvation that results in worn/spun bearings.
