What missing feature would it take for you to switch from Adobe?

    • @grampylash

I’m seriously considering, and will most likely make the switch, but I would really like them to eventually add camera tethering. I do a lot of film negative “scanning" and it saves much time.

The only thing that would make me switch from Adobe is a a catalog into which I can import my LR catalog seamlessly, keeping all relevant info, keywords, ratings, etc. etc. Otherwise there's just no point. I've been using LR since the very first Beta (along with Apple Aperture which they disappointingly canned), and I use the catalog functions a lot to keep everything in order. Without that it's just not worth the time and effort.

I'm a photographer and started with Apple Aperture which was still around at the time and IMO was way better than Adobe Lightroom. Even when Apple discontinued Aperture, I still held on to it for a while till I finally made the jump to Lightroom. If Apple gives us iCloud integration with Pixelmator , a good photo organizer, and some tools like frequency separation, they'll have a for sure winner against Adobe.

The app is currently a single purchase for $50, best $50 I ever spent. It's fully Applescriptable, too, which is bonkers. And the programmers were happy to participate in feedback about bugs and features we needed on their forum, which is very active. The only question is, will Apple change/upgrade it and possibly make it free with future Mac OS versions.

I’ve been using Pixelmator and Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher for years for my personal work. Now they’ve both been purchased by other companies (Apple and Canva - and I hope that will not screw them up). I have to use Adobe apps at work every day. I have at least one Adobe app crash every single day. It’s really frustrating. It could be just scrolling through an InDesign book. Or dragging an artboard in Photoshop. Also, Adobe Bridge is the slowest app I have ever used in my entire life, and I’m 50 years old and have used almost every design/art/photo app that has ever existed on a Mac. It’s like we are paying a subscription to beta test Adobe’s software for them. I will never go back to using Adobe for personal work. Affinity is my goto, but Pixelmator is a really nice alternative.

I’ve been with LR since the very first version on disc. I have got pixelmator pro and photomator.
I am blown away by how good pixelmator is even though I rarely use it. I bought it after it was recommended by another UA-camr, because it is designed to work with Apple motion. And I was learning it with them.
Photomator is very similar to Apple photos so not for me yet, as the library in LR is second to none. But that is its best strength. Why pay £10 a month just for a library. I would love to get rid of my Adobe subscription as a hobbyist. But I don’t have enough time currently, to learn the pixel programs by myself.
Get on these two programs as soon as you can, before someone else becomes the go to pixelmator guru. 👍

This is amazing. I've been considering switching to a Mac now that the Mac Mini M4 is out, especially since Adobe's subscription fees have become quite burdensome. While Premiere and After Effects can be replaced with Final Cut and Motion, Photoshop was the issue-but it seems even that will soon have alternatives. It really feels like the era of Apple being cost-effective has arrived.

When the sale was announced, I transferred my yearly licenses to lifetime with both Pixelmator Pro and Photomator, which since it can now edit multiple files outside Apple's Photos library is great for batch editing. I went lifetime more because I did not want to loose the apps, not sure what Apple will do with them both as they don't necc have a good track record. Hopefully they rebrand them and pump resources in to team. What we have lost already is transparency with direction, forum is locked, no direct access to developers, no road map of features coming up or being able to suggest features etc. Just hope they don't strip code, put in Photos and kill the apps, which is a sh*t app in my opinion. Been a Pixelmator convert since it was just Pixelmator, before the pro. As you say in your video, is it as powerful as PS? No. But it is still an excellent app and does everything I need it do and as you said, being able to do vector in the same app is amazing. I use Pixelmator Pro almost daily and I only paid for it once. It's stable and super fast too. Wont be for everyone, but perfect for 95% of people out there I think. Oh and Photomator is great too, but that is a subscription, but still cheaper than Adobe.

Apple purchased Pixelmator/Photomator 10 years after they cancelled Aperture (2014) . Crazy to think if they had kept developing Aperture how far along it would be. This is Apple's way of jumping back in with an incredible app already beloved by Mac users. I use both Affinity Suite and Pixelmator Pro/Photomator. They're both great. If you're very Adobe then Affinity is for you. But if your brain prefers an authentic Mac app experience Pixelmator/Photomator is super! I prefer to launch Pixelmator/Photomator before Affinity.

I just got Pixelmator and Photomator both of it, and there’s one thing I don’t understand: why the price of Photomator is higher than Pixelmator.
Pixelmator seems to have functions similar to Photoshop and Illustrator, while Photomator is only similar to Lightroom. Pixelmator is definitely more powerful than Photomator, so it’s strange that Photomator is more expensive.

I use Adobe Lightroom Classic! Unbeatable. I use Adobe Photoshop, too. I love it. It handles CMYK. AND I use Pixelmator Pro, which I find very, very good, too! It does not replace Illustrator! Believing that, is ridiculous!. Using Pixelmator as a video editor is ridiculous, too, maybe short intros. What I like is that one can design something in Pixelmator and export it into Apple Motion and animate it. I think Pixelmator will be a tough competitor for Affinity Photo, which is a very bad piece of software! Competition is good, but Adobe will survive!!!

To me Affinity suite is the closest thing to Adobe. I tried getting away from Adobe a couple times but had to go back to it as there were certain things it did Affinity did not. That said I have been beta testing 2.6 as they had the 50% off sale and I went from trial to buy. I am impressed what they are doing and I ditched Adobe so we will see. The biggest thing they have done in 2.6 is th epencil tool is really good now. That is really important to me. The truth is if you are a true professional Adobe is the go to. That said Canva recently, put together an advisory board of designers that I really respect and I mean good people. One person in particular has already said she is testing Affinity and giving them recos which it feels they will implement.
This really excites me and like I said I trust these people.
I feel the problem with affinity in the past as this is no disrespect to anybody, but when you would see a lot of tutorials or work that was done with it it was not very professional. I hate to say that, but there’s some truth to that and I think what Canva has come out and said they’re gonna be ethical. I have to trust them because I think they know that if they’re not, they’re gonna really lose face so I’m gonna trust them. I’m going all in on affinity and with this 2.6 beta they’re really making strides. There’s a couple things I’d still like, but they are super close and there’s workarounds which I don’t like, but I’m OK with it. It’s just it’s really evolved I think since the merger or buyout.
One last thing about Adobe I think something people really have to be realistic about and I think that this is an unfortunate thing about online and how people I mean this video the guy put together is fine but it’s a little click baity. I’m sorry, but the thing is Adobe does not make their money from people like me with like three employees at a small agency they make their money with the big companies. If every person that is a freelancer got rid of Adobe tomorrow it might hurt them for about a month or two but honestly, it wouldn’t. They’re so big with big companies. People aren’t gonna get rid of them. there’s just no way.

As for subscriptions, Apple charges by a subscription model for Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro on the iPad, so I can see them doing the same for Pixelmator Pro. For people who are deep into professional workflows (40-60 hrs a week) with Adobe and who collaborate with shops who have decade's invested there, it's probably not a good idea to switch. BUT that leaves a significant market of users left for whom keeping there Adobe subscription alive while they invest in Pixelmator and see how it goes seems to be a good idea. Not much to loose there, but a great deal to gain ($$$) if Pixelmator turns out to work for them in the end.

After Apple abandoned Aperture I’m worried they will mess Pixelmator up or discontinue it. I’ve used it for years and I find it works intuitively- ie as I expect it to work- while Adobe products don’t work as I expect. That’s just me and the way I think, but it looks like they have added a lot of features and that could make the whole experience far more complex. Worst example is how MS Word is buried under 30 metric tons of features. I’ll probably try it, but I’m concerned.

Pixelmator Pro isn't remotely a competitor for Photoshop. I think Apple bought the company because they're finally getting into generative imagery. It's very likely Apple will build Pixelmator features into their own Photos app.

There’s one thing I don’t understand: why the price of Photomator is higher than Pixelmator.
Pixelmator seems to have functions similar to Photoshop and Illustrator, while Photomator is only similar to Lightroom. Pixelmator is definitely more powerful than Photomator, so it’s strange that Photomator is more expensive.

@@BeesBugsJapan It's my understanding that they acquired the entire Pixelmator company including Photomator. I also believe that they chose not to go after Affinity because it wasn't coded in Swift which is Apple's coding language

I don't think this comparison is entirely fair. Pixelmator isn't supposed to be Lightroom and Premiere, You have Photomator and Final Cut Pro for that. Pixelmator is primarily a photoshop and illustrator competitor, but sice Apple has only bought it very recently, I think the soonest it will be comparable is WWDC2026.

My biggest issue with Apple’s application is CONTINUITY in the prosumer market. I was a Final Cut Pro user since version 1.0, then after version 5.0 Apple created the subpar FCPX. I was a SHAKE user until Apple killed it on 2009. I was an Aperture user and incorporated it into my professional workflow, until Apple killed it and replaced it again with a sub par application. I’m not going to invest time and money on an application that might be killed or changed into something subpar that it is platform closed. Apple used to be synonym with professional apps, now all their so called “pro” tools are just toys wrapped around a nice GUI. I give credit to Logic Pro as the only real professional tool available in Apple though.

This is in no way a competitor for Photoshop or Lightroom. Is it a nice little app that can do some things pretty well? Sure but calling it a competitor is like saying a Honda civic is a competitor to a Porsche 911. Totally different tool set for a totally different market.
