Do You Know How to Listen Well?

  • It’s important to learn how to listen well because listening can bring healing. Author Caryll Houselander is credited for saying “You can listen somebody back to life.”
Mother Clare of the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal says the beautiful thing about listening is you can do it in any human relationship and improve that relationship. The key is getting out of your own world. Good listening requires thinking outside your own experience. Then, once you do that, you get into the world of the one who is speaking.
Listening also requires listening not only to the words, but also to the person’s heart to get the bigger picture of what they’re saying.
Before Jesus raised of Lazarus from the dead, he wept. This is significant because he entered into the suffering of those who loved Lazarus. Sometimes sharing in suffering is a way to listen. “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15).
Sometimes just being there and experiencing what the person is saying is enough. It’s often counterproductive when you just try to offer what the person needs. Often, your part in the remedy is to just let it be and let the Holy Spirit grant healing in God’s own time. By not trying to fix the problem someone is sharing with you, in a way you are revering the Holy Spirit and having faith that God will fix it.
Before anything though, “first I need to listen,” says Fr. Mark-Mary.
On that note, thanks for listening, and know that God is always heeding every word when you speak to him in prayer. Let’s learn from the way he loves us, and do the same for others by loving through listening.

So glad I found Ascension Presents. The young friars and sisters, Fr. Mike, and all the folks here...there is a great combination of joyful energy and profound wisdom that is so encouraging and inspiring. I am an evangelical in the heart of the deep-South Bible Belt and there are very few Catholics here. To see the witness of Christ in your lives is beautiful!

I am Catholic, but I did grow up in the Bible Belt. Having lived up in Yankeeland now since 2007, I still get questions from my Catholic friends up here. I tend to joke by saying that my hometown had about as many Baptist churches as Waffle House’s, adding that a typical intersection had, on its 4-corners, a gas station, a Waffle House, a family owned Mexican restaurant, and a Baptist church😂

Shalom, a couple of comments. Many years ago I was blessed to volunteer at 'The Listening House'. A store front space in a sketchy area of Minneapolis, MN. I learned a lot. #1, listening is an activity, participate. Not thinking of your next comment but trying to understand what is being said. When appropriate, reflect it back to make sure you are in the same place. I statements have no place in listening. Understand that by listening you are validating the person. They have something to offer, they are worth listening to and spending the time without boarders. This was especially wonderful to the homeless who often go unseen. I have also learned is many hard feelings, anger, and misunderstanding can be solved by listening carefully. If helps to solve loneliness, depression and worthlessness.
Thank you fof bringing awareness to this powerful gift.

It must start with being able to listen to God. Think about the two greatest commandments: put simply, they are first to love God, and, second, to love our neighbor. The ordering of these isn’t accidental: we must love God first, as God will always tell us to love our neighbor, while our neighbor will not always tell us to love God.
While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to this for all Christians, as to how one should “love God”, being committed to prayer is necessary. While I am committed to part of the divine office (specifically the Byzantine form of it), I also try and be committed to making time twice a day with the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
With a prayer as simple as this can be tempting to dismiss it as being overly simplistic, though the monastic fathers of the church would wholly disagree. Think about the words of this short prayer; they contain the entire point of the Gospel within it: Jesus Christ is the eternally unbegotten Son of the Father, and I am a sinner in need of His saving grace.
The repetition isn’t from a perspective of “if I pray this more, it will increase the chance of God hearing me”, but of “if I pray this more, it will help me to better conform myself to the gospel.”
The monastic fathers, particularly the desert fathers, said a great many things, though they consistently said the same two things, two things which they exhort us to heed in our own lives, to remember: I am a sinner, and I will one day die. The remembrance of these two things prompts us to be humble first before God, and, second, before our neighbor.
As it is Christmas Eve as I type this, I will share one more thought, sort of related to the feast day: though commonly mistranslated as “mother of God” in English, the most ancient dogmatic title for the Virgin Mary is “Theotokos”. In English, this literally means “God bearer”.
The church dogmatically declared Mary as the “God bearer” as a way to defend the incarnation of Christ, as the heretics of that day either denied that that Christ was fully God, or that Mary was truly pregnant with Christ’s divinity, and truly gave birth to God. As this mystery of our faith is beyond the pale of human reason, these heretics denied it, thus reducing the infinite majesty of God down to their own finite human reasoning.
Here’s the thing, though: while Mary bore God in a way that is uniquely distinct for her (as she, in time, truly became the mother of Him who existed for all eternity, before time even came into existence), ALL of us Christians are called to be “God bearers”. That is the entire point of the Christian life. Mary being the first Christian, she is the archetype, as she was the first to say yes to the message of the incarnation. Her saying yes physically conceived God within her womb, whence she physically gave birth to Him in the world; our saying yes to God spiritually conceives Him in our heart, giving us the grace to give birth to Him in the world by way of our good deeds (which, according to St. Paul, “God has prepared beforehand for [us]”, Ephesians 2:10).
I’m a long-winded man, so I will end by saying that the HOW that you ask about can only come to be if you are first fostering a healthy relationship with God.

Fr Mark Mary, Mother Clare, I ask you to please remember this particular man in your prayers when you can.
He is a Native American from Upstate NY. He is going through a very hard time.
When he was a fatherless teenager, he was abused by a Catholic Priest. The details of which are extremely heartbreaking and evil. For this reason he does not accept Catholicism and has lived out his adult life very ‘spiritual’ but in fruitless ways outside of Christ. He has come to a point now of deep despair. He is married to a lovely kind wife. He has lived a life of trying to help others. As he is aging he is growing more and more depressed. He has stated that he doesn’t believe in anything anymore, not even the old Native American rituals he once practiced.
I found that part to be good, because the opening for Christ has one less obstacle.
Please pray for our brother, a friend of a dear friend. His name is White Eagle.
    Thank you.

    I haven't been a good listener.
I lost my partner child career and mind. Reached for help from close friends. They heard nothing and threw some cookies and one liner comments and told me all about their lives.
The biggest let down was that they just went out and told my personals to a lot of others.
It was my mistake to go to people in my crisis.
As regards the spiritual side of your discussion, I'm not sure at all.
In general longer less frequent podcasts may be worth a thought rather than smaller.

They don't follow word of God add things to word end of day world is truth. we are born of lies add things to word we are taking away our own share of life. This lead to us to false teaching gospel to others not knowing who he is . So this why we look towards word to confirm truth. As lord says test spirit to be of truth only way to do it is pray read word.
And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.
    Revelation 22:19
