Power Rotary Scissors - Does the Stihl RG Live up to the Hype?

  • Power rotary scissors are a relatively new lawn care tool that offers exceptional benefits. For the person where only the absolute best finish over the entire lawn will do, I give you the Stihl RG-KM.
    This is Stihl’s offering in the rotary scissors market that’s really a niche item. It’s available as an attachment to their Kombi multi-tool. Where this tool shines is for the finishing work on your lawn.
    Traditionally anyone reel mowing their lawn had to use a string trimmer to clean up edge areas of the lawn like alongside fences, posts and hard-to-mow areas. A string trimmer can work but the finished result doesn’t match what your reel mower provides. Because the RG cuts the grass the same way that your reel mower does, you get the same scissors quality cut as a reel mower.
    This provides a more consistent finish to the lawn.

    Thanks so much for making this video. I really enjoy how it works finishing off the grass by the side walk. The string trimmer often tears up this area and the reel mower isn’t a clean cut unless the height of the cut and sidewalk are perfectly matched. Thanks again for such quality videos!!!

    I own this and love it... when it works. Many times when I connect it to the KMA-135 head, the gear box head spins and grinds without turning the blades. I don't know what is causing this but if I load up the inside with grease via the lube screw cap it seems to help. My local Stihl wants me to bring it in which I will do if it continues. Seems like the wire drive shaft is not seating correctly maybe becuase once it does turn I don't have any issues after that until I disconnect it and reconnect it. This happens half the time now. When it works this thing is the best tool in my inventory. It is absolutely pure satisfaction to use.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  Рік тому +1

      It's a pretty nice piece of equipment even though it's use case is pretty niche. Nothing else really does what it does. As far as the issue you're having, are any of the teeth bent? It sounds like something is mechanically binding it. I'd inspect the blades and ensure you haven't nicked one.

    As always….great video Ron!!! Thank you for showcasing this new product! I have a beautiful Zoysia lawn that is absolutely gorgeous except for a few extremely steep inclines toward my driveway. My string trimmer and push mower (because I can’t use my other mower on it) is not kind to the lawn in that area. Do you think this would perform well on a small area that is roughly a 60 degree incline? I don’t mind spending the money if it works so I’m seeking your opinion on what you think is best. Thank you for all of the great videos.

    I purchased this unit about a year ago and it's got less than an hour on it, but the blades (scissors) will intermittently get stuck and stop moving. They aren't chipped, there is nothing caught between any of the blades, it just stops. Using a more than powerful enough (approved) Kombi head unit to run it. The bolt on the underside simply takes the blades off. Have you experienced this? Quite frustrating to stop multiple times during operation to manually try to move the blades and then resume. 3:21 RG-But you can't get so close to the fence or other posts that you touch metal on metal, that's where the string trimmer handles everything I need. And cordless electric (not gas) is quiet. Of course if you have a jungle, might need gas, but then you're probably not the audience for a $300 RG anyway. I'm surprised RG got away with having no protective cover/housing for safety.
