I am very new to woodworking. This looks like a fun project to try. Is there a reason you use two pieces of wood for the axle and the cab vs just using one piece of wood?

I just use craft paint and stain, both safe after cured
What paint do you use, i.e. child safe?
We just use craft paint, in the 2oz bottles .
