Dutch minimalist icon Simeon ten Holt, who recently passed away at the age of 89, studied composition with, among others, Honegger and Milhaud. After exploring serialist techniques in the 1960s, he began to focus on more conventional styles of composition from the 70s onwards - concentrating on tone and timbre in particular - and it is from this period (between 1976 and 1998) in Ten Holt’s wide‐ranging career that the Incantatie IV for three pianos dates. Widely famed for his Canto Ostinato, written in five layers, the composer’s Incantatie IV for three pianos stands out for its complexity and is made up of no less than 15 layers for multiple keyboards. Both pieces allow the performers to decide upon the final form of the music, but Incantatie IV leaves much more open; with timbre and pitch, style of play and tempo, number of voices or instruments, and the amount of repetitions all left to the players’ discretion, the length of the composition is undetermined and the piece effectively exists in a grey area between composed and improvised music. One of the artists featured on the recording, Jeroen van Veen, describes the sound world as “if looking at the sea for a long time; the waves, the rays of sunshine and the air all influence the glittering and different colours of the sea”. Jeroen van Veen is one of Brilliant Classics most prolific artists. Chairman of the Simeon ten Holt Foundation (dedicated to keeping Ten Holt’s fascinating music alive) and himself a successful minimalist composer, he is the perfect exponent of this repertoire, championing it on this, his fifth release of the composer’s music. In Incantatie IV for three pianos, Jeroen is joined by his wife and habitual collaborator, Sandra van Veen, as well as Tamara Rumiantsev - herself no stranger to minimalist music, having featured on Brilliant Classics’ Minimal Piano Collection (BC 9171).

Shame I can only give one thumbs up. I can listen to this over and over. This is an incredible music and! interpretation. Thank you very much Jeroen van Veen, Sandra van Veen and Tamara Rumiantsev. The fact that this is a live concert performance is mind blowing.
Haunting, obsessive and dramatic, perfect music for a suspenseful film or a modern dance. And so beautifully played too.

В этом произведении меня особенно трогают крещендо и диминуэндо, которые вызывают картины и впечатления от моря и других проявлений природы: дождя, шума листвы, стрекота цикад или многоголосого пения лесных птиц.

Escher, Mathmatical…YES! also, the left hand beats an accompaniment faithfully, giving the piece stability, a sense of grounding. I also very much appreciate the repetition of the melody and chords over and over by the right hand á la Phillip Glass. The harmonies can sink in and delight as the chord or phrase is repeated until the performer and listener, sometimes reluctantly, are ready to release it and move on to the next musical image.

I am not a musician. I can play simply song accompaniment on guitar. Но я случайно в импровизациях сам дошел до минимализма в 2021. Т только потом узнал про это направление и про Холта.
Два опуса снизошли на меня случайно особенно удачно. Я их не смогу никогда повторить и рад, что они записаны. Это 18 и 25.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieses perfekt konstruierten Meisterwerks im präzisen doch etwas lyrischen Tempo mit klar artikulierten und perfekt synchronisierten Klänge dreier genialen Klaviere. Die intime und perfekt balancierte Miteinanderwirkung zwischen den drei Virtuosen ist wahrlich bewundernswert. Einfach wunderbar!

Pareil pour moi ! Depuis que j'ai découvert Ten Holt j'écoute en boucle ses compositions avec un inlassable plaisir hypnotique. Lemniscaat, Palimpsest, Canto Ostinato, son petit Capriccio, ou encore Soloduiveldans aucun morceau ne me déçoit.

Leuk om eens Incantatie voor _drie_ piano's te horen en dan niet de tegenwoordig standaarduitvoering van Ten Holtuitvoeringen van 90 minuten waarin alle spanning weg is wanneer er naar een nieuwe sectie wordt overgegaan. Twee uur is nog een beetje tekort natuurlijk om het echt spannend te maken.
This is wonderful! Though I will have to listen to it a little at a time, as I rarely have 2 hours to sit in one place, unless I'm working on my own compositions....Peace!

Een wonderschone uitvoering, 2 uur is in mijn opinie wel ongeveer lang genoeg om passages voldoende te kunnen uitspinnen en de aandacht en spanning vast te houden. Een andere uitvoering die ik op UA-cam hoorde was ongeveer even lang maar beduidend langzamer. Ik vind het stuk door het iets snellere tempo in deze uitvoering beter tot zijn recht komen. Bedankt voor het uploaden. Ik heb genoten!
