There is something to this piece of music that makes it click into my brain again and again, but still makes me long for more. Like an unfinished mathematic formula.... its like a musical fractal.
Weelderig, hallucinaties verwekkend mooi...! Dank...!
Simeon ten Holt died a year before this was published on UA-cam. I find it very intriguing to learn about great works or great people after their death. There's something entrancing and mysterious partly in the genre and in how the music sounds but also in the effect that those who have passed have some keen essence to be appreciated about them.
I know! I've listened to classical music all my life, with a fondness for the moderns, and I heard about this guy through UA-cam a few years ago. Sheesh! His canvas is small, but these are perfect paintings
Like Steve Reich's, this music makes you wonder how you hear music and how its can gradually transform you. These "minimalist" composers have a thing - or two - to teach us. Thank you to Simeon ten Holt. And, by the way, incredible performance with amazing attention of the musicians to each other... Thanks !
You know you enjoy a piece of music when it's two and a half hours long, and it gets to the end and your thought is "oh. is that all?" :D Brilliant performance. :D
Scott Lawrence Your comment is probably the best evidence of the lack of true repetition in this music which is based on phasing and the musicians' focus on each other. I couldn't agree more with you. :o)
I think what he was saying is that although on the surface, it seems to be identically repetitive, in actuality, there are enough nuances from the performance and the musicians' interactions that change that there's something there to keep it interesting and exciting to listen for.
This is without a doubt one of the best performances of perhaps the best piece for four pianos! Each musician’s clarity, nuance, and sustained vigilant attention to ensemble piano is without parallel. The excellent lighting, videography and sound engineering only enhance the performance. I would loved to have been present for this live recording. I suspect this particular performance far exceeds the expectations Simeon ten Holt could imagine his composition to achieve.
Dear Maestro VanVeen, thank you for uploading this magnificent performance of this iconic piece. Humbly, my favorite version of this composition that I have heard so far.
Love Canto ostinato so much!!! Unluckily never heard it live (bought tickets for Groningen but missed out). You've got 1000 reasons to perform it at BBC Proms!
Many years before I discovered Philip Glass (in Stuttgart 1984: Premiere of Akhnaten), Steve Reich, Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman, John Adams, Arvo Pärt (all still living, thank God) ............ and why not him up to-day, August 25th, 2015 (+ 2012, RIP)?
Some day in the 21st century with amazing electronic devices to meet virtually all human needs, including self-driving automobiles, one would think that musicians would no longer need to interrupt themselves by reaching up by hand to turn a printed page. 26 March 2018
the truth is, and the same thing applies to the very all major tracks i 'm found of, they sounds so familiar, as we already / ever knew them from a very long time , deep in our soul, even through all these lifes we never had. (i don't see an easier way to say this, as english is not my native words, so this one sound weird and tricky ! )
Could this the the definitive performance?! Thanks, Jeroen, for posting these complete performances on UA-cam. Very much appreciated. But what about the other pieces by ten Holt?
Nice indeed but when will there ever be another 5+ hours performance like in Vredenburg end of the 80's/begin 90's? It looks like CO has a kind of standard format nowadays.
There is a cd-album of Sandra and Jeroen (and friends) called Canto Ostinato XXL, which contains a single performance of this piece with a duration of 4 to 5 hours.
@@Drabkikker then beautiful both section 74 and 95 haha tbh I played forward the vid to find that motiv which I thought was section 74 and had no idea 95 existed... Happy to know now even though they're pretty similar :D Thank you! haha
i'm coming to realise that i like the piano more than any other instrument. because there's no nonsense about it. the similarites to michael nyman's music for 'the piano', 1993, is at times overwhelming. i trust nyman has acknowleged this?
Heel bijzonder.
I know cat videos are more up everybody's alley but If you have a few minutes, I'd love to get your thoughts on my songs/videos. I'm always trying to improve. I know how busy we all are and truly appreciate you taking a moment to watch. Thanks! Tiff
Like it or not, both the composer's piece and the performers are all displays of 'talent.' Disliking this is O.K. To say 'no talent' just shows a near complete ignorance of what it takes to compose a piece or to perform it. The score requires/allows for a myriad of variants as determined by the performers in the moment. The nature of this piece is of a quiet virtuosity; the concentration -- and stamina -- required of the performers is intense.

Maths and music are the same 😀
If you need to study, put this music on. It'll help you.
Moving water never bores.
Weelderig, hallucinaties verwekkend mooi...! Dank...!
Bana klasik müziği sevdiren karsu'ya buradan selamlar

How did I get to be so old and not know this man's music?
I said the same thing. Glad I finally made it.
HA..Yes. for me its well better late than never.
Fredrick Zinos Yep! And I found it purely by chance!

The mysterie to be one with music.....
I enjoyed listening to it in a live concert in an old church in central Amsterdam...
Zen! Een meesterwerk! Chapeau!
So glad i found this piece. Incredible!

Dead right. Thanks ! :-)

Thank you Veldhoven. Thank you everyone. Achievements at so many levels and life-changing music.

What wonderfull music! Thanks for this performance!
This is perfection.
This so lovely, all in joint effort
Heel meditatieve muziek. Echt heel mooi en eigentijds!
How very elegant.
Supergaaf!
Fantastic! Thank you 👏👏👏
Simply wonderful!!

Most jazz musicians use i pads nowadays
So many variations possible in this seemingly repetitive phrase!
I am only 16 but i enjoy this wonderful music

It feels like they have found you, rather than you found them. I have the same feeling sometimes when I read philosophy.
Great spiritual sound foundations u got
you're awesome, Pierre! "weird and tricky", indeed but I love it! :D
Why do u think, that every one here should know thats ur 16?
This is fabulous! Where can I find 3 more pianists and 4 grand pianos to play it? It sure is real fun
100 comments! im making a song rn like this but way shorter and i use this song to listen to while studying
Heel mooie uitvoering. Misschien ook even de componist noemen:
* Simeon Ten Holt! *
May he rest in peace, en be played for ever and ever..
Karsudan geldim❤️❤️ arada gelip dinliyorum …
Could this the the definitive performance?! Thanks, Jeroen, for posting these complete performances on UA-cam. Very much appreciated. But what about the other pieces by ten Holt?
Absolutamente brilhante!

2:04:32 beautiful section 74
@@Drabkikker really? Then I think I cannot hear the difference lol I'd still swear that's section 74! Please enlighten me :)

For a visual representation try a Mandelbrot figure. The start is about defining the fractal

Why do they switch places at 1:21:10 and 1:22:06 ?
Just try to to listen to this during a slideshow of van Gogh's paintings.
Obstinate pleasure

Wonder if this was written or built on improvising
Or improvised and written down for many students to try
It took the composer 3 years to write it ('76-'79). He wrote other peaces like this one. But Canto Ostinato is the best.
Very slow climax, that odd note keep ringing but then music adds more and makes that odd note sound so adventurous
SIMEON TEN HOLT HEETTE HIJ !!!!!!!!
In five... all the way, lol.
Karsu'dan sonra gelenler?

Wonderful piece. And aren't the performers wiped out after playing it? It seems like it would require immense physical and mental stamina.
zzzzooooo mmmmoooiiii
Over amateurs gesproken....
show without real talent...
Comment with no positive intent. Or are we now all supposed to recognise your superiority?
