I need to emulate what you're doing: observing tension in the body before and during practice. I tend to ignore the build-up of tension until it starts affecting my playing and sound, which is really a bad habit. Its very calming to listen to this video!
This is the absolute best practice and development video ever! To see the organization, planning and intelligent execution of your practice made it possible for me personally to grasp what it takes to sound the way you do. I’ll never get there due to my advanced age and 47 years hiatus from playing, but nor will I be discouraged. You put in the work and it is a beautiful thing to witness. I am having so much pleasure getting reacquainted with the flute and your videos reassure me of the right path forward. I was wondering why I had so much tension and back discomfort when I first began playing again. The foam roller was my friend. But you present your own challenges with your practice and artistry giving me insight that I am not alone.
Thanks for your page. I just picked up a flute and I’m diving into playing. I’m a lifetime musician - clarinet, piano, guitar piano, singer. Your posts are very helpful.
Thank you, you really have a very complete technique and you are very kind to teach it, although the study is never finished and the artist must progress as far as he can, comparing with the magic tricks, every day the secrets of the flute are explained more. Greetings and GOD bless you from Argentina, I was a piper of a military symphonic band,
Very good. Some days ago I was "awake" that I was doing everythig wrong, trying to play VERY badly entire pieces way above my level and getting nowhere. Thank so much for the valuable tips to improve the fundamentals to play in a more consistent way.
Thank you so much for this video! You gave me a whole new perspective regarding body posture in the beggining of the practice+ some motivation to practice😊
I am a beginner (originally sax player) and as I am taking hard now on flute, your routine and explanations are really helpfull! (After 2 months now results are beginning to show off, but I keep on doing.) Thanks a lot and congratulations!!
This is phenomenal. I've watched it four times since I discovered it yesterday afternoon. So much to think about, and you're very articulate about how you present some rather complex and subtle challenges. THANK YOU.
I have found this video so helpful. You are such a natural teacher and explain things in a very helpful way and ot makes me want to practice and get better myself. I will he using this in my new practice routine. Love the idea of using mirror on your stand. What kind do you use? X
Thank you for your kind cmment!! This is the mirror I have that hangs on my stand: www.target.com/p/conair-soft-touch-large-black-rectangle-mirror/-/A-52598353
I personally align the embouchure hole with the first key and generally aim to keep both the keys and the embouchure hole parallel with the ceiling. My headjoint is cut in such a way that my bottom lip can adequately cover from here, so rolling in tends to feel too stifled. (This headjoint cut also likes to be placed pretty low on the face, keeping a good amount of space from the aperture to the wall!) I personally like to think about my arms and hands supporting the flute from below to keep pressure off my hands and wrists - it keeps my shoulders and neck comfortable, too!
Thanks for this. I am a beginner. Not sure about the warm up notes. Do you have a warm up for a beginner who is a beginner because he hasn't picked up the flute in a while. But is better than knowing nothing. I read music and if you said A or A flat I know the notes. I really like you as someone who helps people on the flutes. I yes I could just play the notes that I know and try to warm up but if you have the time I really would appreciate a good warm-up to get me playing the notes so it's not so airy and do you know anything about warming up your flute I mean physically warming it up so it's warmer I seem to remember having a blow dryer and putting it on there or blowing hot air into my flute?
It's Modacity, it is like a Practice playlist where you can input your practice tasks and set timers for them. It also has a drone and metronome feature built right in and a spot for notes for each practice item!
We do need some tension to play, but I find that more often than not, we tend to overwork! If it feels easier and sounds better by letting go, it's a good sign that effort could be redistributed!

I notice you don't seem to use rockstro positioning for balancing the flute. How do you line up your flute/keep it comfortable in your hands? 😊

Can I ask you the brand of your flute bag?

Nice video, keep it up !
Thanks!
I like that you focus on ease and body alignment
Arlene Chapman Thanks! It’s the part I love to think about the most!
Thank you for this
Thanks for watching! :)
Wow..amazing
Hi Jolene. What’s the app you used on your daily practice?
What mirror is it that you are using in this video? I never thought of using a clip on. How durable is it?
Cooooooool!!!!!👏👏👏
Thank you!
your tone is beautiful K
How to get a non-Huskie sound to keep the Huskie happy?! Or is that a Malamut?
She's a very calm husky and doesn't mind my practicing, fortunately! :)
What type of flute is that? It's soooo nice!!!
Powell 14K Custom!
Also raising your flute to be parallel to the ground will help your sound as well
I love doing fundamentals so much! What is the app you use, what purpose does it serve?
Oh it's a tuner?
It's Modacity, it is like a Practice playlist where you can input your practice tasks and set timers for them. It also has a drone and metronome feature built right in and a spot for notes for each practice item!
What flute are you playing in this video?
Powell 14K Custom!
It is interesting what you are saying about sitting down to make the abdominal work easier. I always thought I was just being lazy when sitting down.
We do need some tension to play, but I find that more often than not, we tend to overwork! If it feels easier and sounds better by letting go, it's a good sign that effort could be redistributed!
Hallo!that's fine...i beginn again to play after 25 years....
is the dog necessary? Just joking KKKK
joke, but what is a skeleton in a closet, is a Galician who played hide and seek ,, and he win ,,,
