my god, this video just changed the whole concept of improvement I had in my mind. Ive been a doubler for about 3 years, since I started playing the flute (im also a clarinet player) and something ive been dealing with a lot this year is improving my sound on both the instruments. i have been very obsessed about it and playing had become a burden so so many times. nobody has never told me about this mindset about not trying to rush it and stuff. this was so helpful
Again, this is GOLD In my 4th or 5th year of playing I was changed to the "Frowny" embouchure from the "Smiley" embouchure. I should have told my teacher that I had a concert in 2 weeks LOL!!! How I managed to get through my solos was hilarious. The advice you give here is sooooo helpful. IT TAKES TIME!!! I love playing the flute, but I often take it too seriously. Having someone tell me "IT TAKES TIME" helps relieve the stress. It's a very startling experience to go from performing advanced literature to barely being able to manage "Mary had a little lamb." Stress only can hurt your playing in the end. Knowing that it will all turn out just fine with patience and persistence is comforting and relaxing. A relaxed player makes their flute sing.
So happy to talk about this topic! Embouchure change can quite an ordeal! Let me know about your embouchure change story down in the comments! Also, any tips you want to share as well would be grateful for the community!
Thanks for posting this video. I started playing flute in the 6th grade and soon developed a crooked embouchure. My private teacher was not so concerned with this, but I had my fair share of other people comment on it, one person telling me that I couldn't go very far until I fixed it. Unfortunately I gave up playing in college to pursue a different career (big mistake) and am now in my mid-30s with a family, job, and all the requisite responsibilities, but I want to return so badly to the flute. I often feel deeply sad because music is no longer a part of my life. So as I try to return to playing I've decided to try and "fix" my crooked embouchure as much as I can. I actually can't make a "perfect" embouchure anyway, it's just naturally offset. But I have about 10m in a normal day where I can even practice, so this video helped me understand that it's ok to not focus on it to the point where I can't enjoy it. Maybe 5 minutes of real focus on it, and 5 minutes playing something slow. After all, we're talking about reversing more than a decade of habit. I know 10m a day sounds worthless, but hopefully also better than nothing? I just want people to enjoy my sound without judging my appearance.
Thanks so much for this video! I am in the process of an embouchure change and it's been really frustrating. I am happy to know that it's going to sound worse before it gets better; that's exactly what's been happening with me! This video is very encouraging!!
I really appreciate what you said about balance, and it taking time. I've been too focused that I've been having no fun playing the flute, and skipping practice because of it. This video really helps and is very encouraging. Thanks!
I absolutely agree with what you say about not obsessing over changing a behavior. I play clarinet and was watching videos that gave very good advice but after a while I was over thinking it every time I played and I stopped enjoying practicing. It didn’t feel musical. Even if it was helping, I needed to step back and just do those adjustments a little at a time.
This is great! I am getting back into my flute playing having had many years of not playing. Just picked her up from the shop where she was cleaned and overhauled - she looks like new and I cannot wait to start practicing. I can take things too seriously and give myself a hard time - you are so helpful in taking the stress out and focus on little steps. My teacher had me practice in front of a mirror and first with the head piece only. :)
thank you for this video. i currently am a first year flute student in undergraduate school, and i have always had the smiley embouchure. i am currently working on reversing it because my teacher and i agree that it is causing me issues. i appreciate you making this video.
Thank you Amélie! I'm just a beginner! And I appreciate very much your advices! I find very hard but I don't let down! I'm enchanted by this subtle sound of the transverse Flute!!!
I really appreciate this video! I little while ago, I got on injury on my emboshure spot, so now there is a scar there. It's been really hard to play, but this video encouraged me to keep trying! Thank you.
Turns out I have had the wrong embechure for the past 6 years that i have been playing the flute. I've always tucked my lips in so that they were almost not even visible. My teacher has always just told me to relax because neither of us knew why I was so "tense". Turns out I wasn't tense, I just had my lips curled all the way out of sight. Having to relearn my embechure is going to be hard. Wish me luck!
Hello! I am a first year highschool student and I am a beginner of playing the flute. I completely don't have any knowledge and I am just self taught since I don't have the luxury to have a coach. I just got my flute yesterday and I am currently doing step by step progress. This video really help me especially when you talked about mindset I was completely focus at the task that I forgot to have fun and there was no need to rush because I don't need to follow a deadline or something. Thank you so much! I hope I could progress much more and finally able to play the flute with my favorite song. ❤️😊
I really enjoyed her philosophy regarding a calm fix on your embouchure. Hopefully I will listen to her advice and relax now while playing and slowly improving my sound. Play on!!
Geee! Thanks so much… I Just follow your experience and feeling advances step by step… difficult, not imposible: Just try to enjoy practice under your advising. Congratulations from México
Thank you for this video. What you shared about the mindset and how to change it and it was very helpful. Couple months ago, I was discouraged not able to have a clear sound and didn't know what to change or how to change... at one point, I lost the joy to playing the flute. By God's grace, I will be keep learning.... Thanks again!
This is so fascinating. Your point on having fun and keeping things in balance is essential, In my opinion. I have an example of this. I play the whistle and am learning the flute in between. (Although I am not a good whistle player, I play by ear and so can play many short simple tunes.) I only spend 2 minute slots on flute (similar as you suggested) then play lots of tunes on whistle. My flute is in my kitchen when I take a break, I spend the time waiting for kettle to boil trying out the embouchure and playing scales on flute and using the reference note idea you suggested in a video. This has proven very useful and now find my tone is improving a little bit more every day. Fortunately I am a big tea drinker and I work from home. So all those two minute slots add up. But without the worry and it becomes just a bit of fun at the same time as kettle boils. Sometimes when it is going well, I have to restart kettle as extra time on flute means kettle needs re-boiling!! Lots of short practice periods like this has proven really effective for me so far. Plus you never feel like you should be practicing more as you do this every day and the periods being so short you don't ever stress over it. The best part of this is, you can learn many songs with whistle as so easy technically to play it. And you then have the good feeling that once you have cracked the embouchure you will have tunes you can play at once on the flute as well. Although of course the sound won't be great for a long time. But at least I'll have tunes to play. (I am using Irish key-less 6 holed flute for this, hence compatible with whistle. Later I may move over to silver keyed flute.)
I got to know about the 'big embouchure change' (from smiley and tense to fowny and relaxed) about 8 years ago. I still haven't reached a frowny embouchure (still impossible in upper middle register and high register), and it became a bit of an obsession as said in the video, but when I stopped caring 'too much' about it just a few months ago, I found some kind of middle way which works great for now - I can finally play the highest notes with OK sound. I have relaxed lips and just a hint of a smile in the corners of my mouth. Just wanted to share this to maybe send some hope to those who feel like it's impossible. Great video and I agree with everyone: Thanks for the nice message of not losing the joy of playing and that it'll take time and that that's okay.
I tatolly agree Embouchure is very important when trying to play the flutte. Better way to put it, if it feels comfortable but you look funny in the mirror then you are doing it right. Also, i like how emelie explains that having Sound, Technic, Studies and Peaces in your practice is very important. So far, i haven't gotten familiar with the sound. Should i practice with Arpeggios or Scales? In order for me to familiarize the sounds. I hope you can answer my question.
Thank you! Thanks to this video I have improved a lot, I used to have a Rara embouchure rune, my teacher told me that for the bass he will use an "E" and for the treble a "0", but with this video, I have better sound!!!🎉
This should help me cuz I played on my own for a while but always felt as if I couldn't get a good sound, especially the higher up I went on the scale. It's nice to know I can just not stress out about it.
Thanks for tips. I started todey on Irish flute and it is amazing how elusive good tone is. I pick my flute and can't make anything that is not m9stly air. Then pick it again anf boom -i get strong low D. You mentioned not covering hole with upper lip - i need to be mindful of that since i have a bit of overbite.
Great video! I would like to see more videos for begginners. And a question, i have learned the flute from your videos and the internet, but i just don't know what to do, i dont have issues playing a note but i just simply cant play a piece. What should i practice or what should i do?
First thanks so much for watching! Now to address what to practice, will be releasing our book of the first 15 flute lessons for beginners at the end of the month. But I would also look at flute tunes and find some beginner studies or etudes. Look at gariboldi or Kohler.
Hi. How do you straighten your embrocure? I play with a crooked embrocure and my flute teacher noticed it's been affecting my overall tone especially on high notes. And also I just got Invisalign and I think if I straighten my embrocure it probably would be easier to play with the Invisalign
I'm a new flute player for 4 months, many technical issues are needed to study. Embouchure is the big of mine, I don't understand the change of lips when playing the scale. At this moment, I only can play the low notes with single tonguing at a slow speed.
I play my flute on the side of my mouth...my sound sounds clear and okay...but wondering if I should change it somehow to like the center of my lip?...would it improve my sound a bit?...and is where I place my mouth piece is it a bad spot to put it in?
My low lip is not big, but it's so long that covers my superior teeth so I kind of have a problem keeping it down, and trying to make the superior longer, so that way the air goes down and not directly forward. That's one problem, the second is that I have teardrop lip... I'm struggling every practice because using the right embouchure for making a beautiful sound is too hard and hurts, my teacher doesn't know what to do, and I get discouraged to practice with my metallic sound of a bad embouchure. I've been playing around 2 years and this with the right thumb problem makes me frustrated sometimes
what the specific words are use to play flute when we are playing sound for any songs frequently like our finger and blowing know very well how to pressure air and but some time i get confused which words are good to play in whole ?
Been playing flute for 7 years? I have a weird overbite look when I play and my mouth just frowns when I play. I need to learn doing it with effortlessness and not put so much air because although I sound very good I’m sometimes punchy with the notes and breathing with the shape makes it very bad so hopefully this video helps
I know this is an old video but I have a student who is struggling when trying to play high notes where because of a bump of flesh on the middle of her upper lip (on the inside) her air is splitting into two directions going left and right instead of center as she is condensing her air, have you run into this? or have any solutions
I don’t really know if I have a smiling emborsure or not. When I play the flute, it does get tight and hurt my muscles. But I don’t really know if I have a smiling emborsure because I don’t see it. Maybe I move into a smiling emborsure as I play? And that’s why it gets so tight? I need help 😭
Hi! You’ll probably never se this because I’m so late, but I have been playing the flute for two years now and am having trouble relearning my embouchure! I find that I tuck my lips in until they’re almost completely invisible, so I don’t know how that’s affecting my playing? I can play pretty low and high, but I do struggle with keeping the note steady (mostly on high, so it doesn’t fluctuate) and also playing softly and high. Any tips? thanks for all your videos they’re a big help
I try to read all the comments, its work but I love meeting my whole community. I would advise possible taking a couple lessons with a teacher in your area just to give you tips and remind you what a "good" basic embouchure is. After that it seems like you will be able to explore music better. It's hard to say anything else because you really need to be in person to fix something like embouchure. Check local music shops, they may have a list of teachers or your local college. It may have a music department and you can grab a lesson from the students there. Best of luck!
Hi Amelie! Good day! I just wanted you to React to Kyoto Tachibana SHS Marching Band Especially the flute section because they jump and move the flute a lot especially in their signature song “Sing Sing Sing” by Benny Goodman. Recently, I’ve paid more attention to my embouchure and realized that I cover more then half of the tone hole! I myself don’t think my tone is airy. My teacher says I have a good tone for having only played for one year self taught.
If it works for you, that great to hear! Having that type of awareness is a key ingredient in being a musician. I wish you well on your musical journey! Happy practicing!
I have no clue how people "smile" and play. Then again, I have a massive overbite, and that sort of embouchure would demolish any hope I had of playing.

Happy to help Troy! Thanks for watching!
what the specific words are use to play flute when we are playing sound for any songs frequently like our finger and blowing know very well how to pressure air and but some time i get confused which words are good to play in whole ?
You are really wonderful ❤️😃🙏🏼
Sister, takes more air to play this flute?
THANK YOU
Can u difine. The basic notes of flute in yr managment....
Merci beaucoup pour vos conseils
Been playing flute for 7 years? I have a weird overbite look when I play and my mouth just frowns when I play. I need to learn doing it with effortlessness and not put so much air because although I sound very good I’m sometimes punchy with the notes and breathing with the shape makes it very bad so hopefully this video helps
I know this is an old video but I have a student who is struggling when trying to play high notes where because of a bump of flesh on the middle of her upper lip (on the inside) her air is splitting into two directions going left and right instead of center as she is condensing her air, have you run into this? or have any solutions
Hi, Amelie! Is it possible to have a decent sound even if the embouchure is somewhat skewed to the side?
Yup totally! A lot of players do play like that.
The Flute Channel: Thanks! 🤗
I don’t really know if I have a smiling emborsure or not. When I play the flute, it does get tight and hurt my muscles. But I don’t really know if I have a smiling emborsure because I don’t see it. Maybe I move into a smiling emborsure as I play? And that’s why it gets so tight? I need help 😭
this is really late but even if ur not visibly smiling you can still be tensed. try to relax ur mouth muscles

Hi Amelie!
Good day!
I just wanted you to React to Kyoto Tachibana SHS Marching Band Especially the flute section because they jump and move the flute a lot especially in their signature song “Sing Sing Sing” by Benny Goodman.
I may recommend their Pasadena band fest performance and 3000 people 58th anniversary
i wish you would react to it.
Thank You for reading!

These flutes are so expensive for a beginner's flutes, Is there a website with less expensive flutes.
I have a lot of videos talking about more budgets flutes. Take a look around the channel. Happy practicing Bodhi!
