Thank you for sharing. I am an adult beginner.I had some flute lesson for nearly 15 ago and I stopped playing. I have started to practise and I'm looking forward to valuable tips and inspiration in order to maintain my flute playing.
Even though I've been playing with vibrato with a couple of years now, your video was a great refresher course on the basics. I also liked how you showed certain situations and how to fix them, amazing work! :DDD
Hi! I noticed that somewhere around this video you started played a gold Powell. I’d love to know more about what flute you had before (the one you used with the lefreque) and what made you decide to get a new flute and your whole selection process and why you ended up with the flute you play now. I’m currently in this buying process and would love some pointers!
Hy Rylan! That's a great question! I've been considering making a video sharing the whole process of choosing and adapting to a completely new instrument, you've inspired me to put this at the top of my list!
Yes! When the abs are overly squeezed, it can feel difficult to remain resilient and get the depth of sound and depth of amplitude - this could be where vibrato feels forced versus adding depth to the sound. (I usually run out of air much faster when squeezing, as well, so it's mainly about feeling free to manage my exhale!) I really love Amy Likar's explanation of abdominal engagement in her breathing book - "just enough lower ab engagement to lift one leg off the floor" - it's not much! I feel both free with breathing and hear depth and support for the sound and vibrato with that in mind!
Totally off track question, but I notice you take out your flute of its case at the beginning of the video. I've been leaving mine assembled, just so I can pick it up any time when I have a spare moment. Is that a problem? Is there any reason to disassemble it every time? The internet seems to say that it gets tarnished if you leave it out, but why? The case isn't air tight, so it's still exposed to air whether it's in a case or not.
I'm not an expert, but I believe as long as you use a cleaning rod on the inside of your flute, and a cloth to clear up the oil from your fingers on the outside (this should be done either way), it should be fine - as long as the flute is left in a safe and temperate place. The main function of your case is so that your flute doesn't get damaged. Hope this helps :)
That's a good question! My flute repair tech Adam Workman of Flutistry has explained to me that it's a good idea to put your flute away in between playing to avoid dust particles in the air interfering with the pads and mechanism - over time, it could lead to extra wear. That, and it's safer from getting knocked over! :) As far as preventing tarnishing, I'd recommend placing anti-tarnish strips into your flute case! Hope that helps!
Hold up, so you're sort of like tonguing without tonguing at the same time slurring each time you "tongue"? Lmao, this really made me stsrt playing vibrato like how it should be

Could you play Altes Etude no. 16?
I'll add it to my list!
You mention to relax the abs but other people say it is all about support and engaging the abs--what is the difference here?
If you are having the trouble she explains and are squeezing out all your air and only getting to top end of the vibrato wave.
