  • A further review of my BMW 750 GS 2021. After 4 weeks across colombia I wanted to share a few safety issues worth mentioning... Lights, tyres, wheels etc. Maybe you have a BMW F750GS or maybe you are wondering which motorbike to buy, or which motorbike is the best brand. Do you want on-road, off-road or a mix of the two? Well, I hope my regular input on my experience helps.
    A few people asked about these additions:
    Seat cooling cover: amzn.to/3oqXROX
    Remus Black Hawk exhaust: ebay.us/bMl9bl
    Mid- pipe - Dominator is best one I think (2018 + is fine): ebay.us/eeWRhc
    Maybe I would have been better off with the 850 GS, but I didn't think I would do as much off-road as I have been doing in the last 9 months. So think carefully if you're torn between getting the 750 GS and the 850 GS ... But I'm still happy with the 750 GS... And getting the 'lower' seat option on the 850 GS, would mean sacrificing a center stand. I like having one, so that was a big drawback. I'm 5'9" and the standard seat height of the 850 GS is just a pinch too high for me.

      +Mihai Stefan Thanks for watching, I glad they're helping and reaching people like yourself. I hope you manage to get your bike and explore Romania. I was there some years ago, but not on a bike. I drove from England and spent Christmas in Arad helping to convert a big farm house for the street children. It was very cold, but the kids were very tough and very friendly. It was an amazing experience, I wish I could have seen more but we literally just stayed there for 3 weeks then drove back to England. All the best my friend, and ride safe.

      @@philipTOMPSETT I didn't manage to do the tour unfortunately, but I did multiple trips around the south and center of the country. And actually did a trip through Bulgaria and Greece, to the island of Lefkada, at the end of August. The bike was amazing! I now have a total of ~12 000 km since I got her in february. About touring in Romania, you definitely need to go on Transfagarasan (beautiful sights) and Transalpina (highest road in RO - also beautiful sights), and on a whole bunch of other "trans" roads through the mountains (Lepsa, Intorsura Buzaului). There aren't many highways, so you'll mostly ride on national or county roads, if you're doing a tour. You need to be careful while crossing small towns, communes and villages, because not all drivers are aware of their surroundings, and you might find the friendly neighbourhood drunkard stumbling on the way home :) . Most of the national and county roads are okay, asphalt-wise, the Police is friendly if you are respectful, and you'll find gas stations almost everywhere. As a navigation app you can use Waze, because there's a thriving community and all the information is pretty much updated on a daily basis. If roaming is not an option, you can buy a prepaid sim card from Vodafone or Orange which have great offers for unlimited Internet and good 3G, 4G or even 5G reception almost everywhere (except the highest peaks or remotest villages). Cities to see: Brasov, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Timisoara, Oradea, Constanta, and of course Bucharest (very crowded, but pretty safe and with a pretty solid public transport system outside of rush hour). Avoid DN1 (National Road 1) Bucharest - Brasov on weekends, it's very crowded. I'm not sure what you need to know, so if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask, I'm happy to help with more specific info :)

    I recently purchased a used standard F850GS with the standard suspension. I did a lot of research before purchasing and was also considering the F750GS because of its 2" lower standard seat height. A big difference btw the two models beside the seat height, wheels and HP/TQ is actually the different suspensions. The F850 has larger inverted front tubes with a longer travel F/R suspension which accounts for the increased ground clearance and seat height. After deciding on the F850GS, I opted not to purchase the low seat/suspension F850GS model because it eliminated the Dynamic ESA and center stand, both of which I really wanted. I added the factory extra-low seat and now I am very happy with my purchase.

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  2 роки тому +5

      Awesome info, thanks for sharing. Yes, I knew there was more technical aspects in the differences, but I didn't know it would forego the center stand with the lower option. It's obvious now you say it, and I would want to keep the stand, too. Funny how they didn't point that out to me when trying to sell me the 850 in the showroom!! I'm 5'9" and was on my toes with the 850 and just didn't feel comfortable. At least with the 750 I almost have both feet flat, and easily left foot flat with right on the back break at traffic lights etc which is obviously important. Even with that, I still get some issues when going slow on unsurfaced roads, and slow to a stop and find that one side of the road is lower... It's alarming with a loaded bike and you have to quickly fight to stay balanced... so that would be even harder for me on a unlowered 850. How tall are you, if you don't mind me asking? Someone else might ask, so just to preempt the curiosity. Thanks again for all the info.

    • @Ortho281
      @Ortho281 2 роки тому +1

      @@MotoBrit I am only 5'6" but I have longer legs and a shorter torso. In addition to the lowered seat, I also had my dealer remove the 2 plastic 1mm spacers on the rear shock which lowered the preload and sag height for my weight 130 lbs. The F850 with Dynamic ESA only has 3 setting on the electronic preload adjuster for 1 rider, 1 rider with luggage or 2 riders, therefore there is no other way to adjust the suspension preload to suit the riders weight. The lowered F850 and your F750 has a manual adjuster for the rear preload so you would use this to adjust the sag height of your rear suspension based on riders weight, cargo or passenger.

    Thank you and please keep posting videos, they are great🙂

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  9 місяців тому

      Congrats on the new bike, and thanks for the kind feedback on my vids. Much appreciated. The wheelspin was more to do with my tyres not being great in the rain, I think. The original Anakee 3 road tyres were a bit slippy in the rain when on really smooth roads. I did have a few small slips, nothing too dangerous. It wasn't anything to do with the riding modes. However, when in rain mode, the response is a bit slower, so you're less likely to wheelspin in the rain. It feels very sluggish, but if you're a new rider it will give you confidence, so definitely use that mode when riding in the rain, and hold your speed on corners and accelerate as you straighten up. That will reduce the chance of you ever slipping. Good luck.

    Hi, I've recently come across your channel and I've since been watching and enjoying many of your videos. I am in the process of searching the local market for a used F 750. I reckon it suits me better than the F850, as I'm 1.76 m tall. Looking now at the wheel's bending I wonder if, for off-road use, you could find in the market a pair of spoked wheels for your bike (i.e a 19'wheel in front), provided that the price would be affordable. Greetings from Greece

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  Рік тому +1

      I did consider buying spoked wheels, but they are quite expensive, and I didn't think they were essential for my riding. Yes, I do go off-road a bit, but only mountain roads and the occasional woodland trail, nothing crazy. The damage I had to my front moulded wheel was a one-off occurrence on a bad road at night and I was riding too fast and hit a large pot hole. Plus it was easy and cheap to repair, so I decided moulded would continue to be ok. But to be honest, I do like the look of spoked wheels better, and of course there's the extra guarantee of safety in rough terrain. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and I hope you find a suitable bike soon. Yes, I would recommend the 750. I think a person needs to be at least 1.8m to have both balls of the feet on the ground on an 850 because of the higher ground clearance.

    • @MotoBrit

      +Elespo_0 ... Hi there. The country is quite safe nowadays. Like most places, if you make yourself a target you'll become one. So I don't stand in a street looking at a map on my phone, or counting money, etc. Colombia is much safer than people think, but I'm sure there's still a few dodgy areas. I certainly saw a few streets where I wouldn't want to stay for too long. But I've had that sixth sense feeling in many countries, not just Colombia. Good luck with getting a bike, yes, the BMW GS range are designed for comfort, so it's a good option for those with bad backs.

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  2 роки тому

      Haha... Rabbit chewing... made me chuckle. I don't get any head wobble at all at regular cruising speed. But as mentioned in one comment, I do feel the wind if riding at speed and I turn my head to the side to film when my GoPro is on my chin. It feels like it could fly off, so makes me a bit nervous. Strange how all those same factors (height, helmet, etc) give a different result. I'm going to get a clip-on extension to see if that eliminates the head flow further, I'll definitely mention it in a future video to confirm if it helps. I mean, I have touched on max speed a few times, (shhhh, just between me and you) but very rarely, and yes, there's defo a bit of rabbit chewing, but I'm talking about less than a minute at 170kmph+ just for a quick buzz when the circumstances are right. Otherwise I tend to be around 130 ish on the long straights, and my head is fine, my jaw is relaxed and I'm listening to music, no problem. Sometimes even with the visor up and just sunglasses. So... must be the design and angle of our respective shields. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Hi Di, thanks for the message. Would love to chat more about all those questions, but I'll try and be brief and to the point... The lights were one pair of a thousand choices. Honestly it's just a matter of getting hold of a set that are close by and don't have to be flown in from the other side of the world. I've never seen any videos about them, but basically a good set of waterproof LEDs. My mate built the little lever switch for me, but you could add a switch on the handlebars as well. The cover for the auto shifter was from AliExpress. They might be on Amazon, but I like to cut out the middleman for stuff that isn't urgent. There's a video on my channel showing the before and after sound of the exhaust. Which you've probably seen by now. And yes, the big useless box... I knew I wanted to take mine off as soon as I bought it. It just looks ugly. The only downside is voiding the guarantee for the whole of the engine. So it's definitely a risk. But I'm so glad I did it. The sound and the look is just so much better. Well, just my opinion. Thanks again. Safe riding up there... well, after the winter of course. 😄😄

They sell brackets and bike specific Can Bus wiring harness. I had the dealership install for me and they are awesome. The installation is tricky cause of the Can Bus electronics. I do not understand that stuff but know that if you do it wrong you can dry the whole system. They are programmable. I let them do that. They’re on as running lights and go brighter if I hit the brights. They have a strobe feature to alert oncoming traffic. I would not do that at night and as I do ride in NYC traffic I noticed that they flash when I hit the horn. This turns out to be a great feature as drivers actually respond when they’re cutting you off.

      It seemed a little too high for me (I'm 5' 9") but just being on tip-toes with such a heavy bike was not suitable. I don't like having seat lowering options because that then causes other problems in terms of ground clearance. Plus, at the time I didn't think I'd be doing as much off-road as I am now, so the 750 seemed the better option. I would probably rethink everything though if I was buying it now, one year later. +ashish akolkar ... I've only tried the 850 for a short time. If it's just comparing comfort, I would say exactly the same. Maybe someone else reading this might disagree and have a better observation of both over a long period. But I'm sure there's certainly not much in it.

    Thanks for the great video's! Still debating whether to go for the F750GS, Versys 650 or Tiger Sport 850. What's your view on the reliability of this one and the cost of ownership? Cheers!

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  2 роки тому +3

      +Moto_Dutch91 ... I like the Tiger as well, so I'd be equally split on the decision. I've been very happy with the 750GS, although I did have one issue with my throttle, that needed a new sensor. And I'm sure it was just unlucky, rather than a common issue. But other than that I've been very happy with the reliability, durability and performance. The cost of the first major service at 10,000 km was also ok, I think the equivalent of about $200 which I thought was reasonable.

    Hi thank you for your informative video.
    I want just want to know if your windshield is made of polycarbonate or acrylic.
    My f750gs doesn’t have one but comes with the stock, short one. I’m planning to get the higher one. What do think is better between poly or acrylic ? Thank You

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jerome. It's acrylic, but in all honesty, poly is much better, as you probably know. I had a removable poly screen a few bikes ago and it was awesome. But I must say, this one from Madstad motors is a really good fit, and very durable so far. It's the 16" Clear screen. I may actually buy a detachable extension just for further wind defection. Although this is a good height, if I'm really picky, I do feel wind at speed if I turn my head and have my GoPro on my chin, and worry that it could fly off. But thats being super critical. Here's the link anyway if it helps: madstad.com. You have to buy direct, I don't think they have agents, like Amazon etc. But obviously much better than the stock short one which I took off on the first day. In fact after ordering my bike, all my accessories arrived first, so I spent the first day of my new bike back in Jan '21, swapping things around. 😄

    • @MotoBrit
      @MotoBrit  2 роки тому

      Hi Dave. You're welcome, thanks for watching. The only requirement for the spotlights are that they are LED and waterproof. Most seem to market themselves as 'explorers' so it's just a case of getting a set that are local to you, as there are literally hundreds of options. It's best to get BMW to fit them as well so that the additional wiring doesn't negate any guarantee on the electrics, and that it's done so no residual ohms leak out when the engine is off (that's talking from experience from something I did years ago and spent more time and money trying to resolve it.) So I don't have any links as it's the only aftermarket job where I've not gone to Amazon or AliExpress and instead just let the experts sort it out. Sorry to not have any direct links to the exact parts.

I can see over it easily and the wind deflects nicely even at top speed. My helmet may also play a role because it's a good one, an Arai, but I don't get any head fatigue at all, or wind noise. I would like to know how such a long trip (7,000 km!) was, if it was very exhausting or if you end up getting used to doing so many kilometers a day... do you miss a more comfortable or larger motorcycle? By the way, your intercom doesn't work well because you can't turn the volume up, as you already know, except if you use the BMW ones that do control the volume. If you don't use a BMW, it's better not to connect it to the motorcycle's control unit and to do it directly to the phone, as you said. All the best from Spain!

      I didn't, no. After having the mould repaired on the front, I decided to keep them, as I realized after this video that the damage was due to a low tire pressure when I hit the hole in the road, and rationalized that it was more my fault, than having the wrong wheels for my riding. I don't go way off road anyway, so I'm unlikely to be bouncing over tree roots or river rocks. And haven't since. Not much, anyway. Happy with the moulds, still. 👍🏻
