  • So, let's talk about this Minerva Armoured thing, shall we? It's like a car, but with muscles. Belgium, in a stroke of wartime creativity, decided to turn their normal Minerva cars into these tough, armor-plated warriors during World War I. It was like upgrading your everyday sedan to a battle-ready tank, but with a bit more Belgian flair.
Now, back then, everyone was trying to figure out how to make their cars fight-worthy. Belgium jumped in early, becoming the first to send armored cars into the chaos of World War I. Mind you, Italy had already dabbled in this armored car business during a skirmish with Turkey, but Belgium took it to a whole new level.
Lieutenant Charles Henkart, in 1914, decided to pimp his ride by armoring up two Minerva cars at some fancy-sounding place called the Cockerill Works. These cars weren't just for show; they were the real deal, with a crew brave enough to face gunfire even though they had an open top! Sadly, Lieutenant Henkart met his end in a German ambush, proving that even the toughest cars couldn't always dodge bullets.
Before the Germans took over Belgium, around thirty of these Minerva armored cars were cruising around, doing reconnaissance, supporting infantry, and sneaking behind enemy lines. It wasn't until 1916 that they got a serious makeover, with a fully enclosed top and a snazzy machine gun setup. The Belgian Army then used them like fancy motorized cavalry, zooming around in platoons of three.
And get this, when things got too muddy on the Western Front, they sent some of these bad boys to Russia with the Belgian Expeditionary Corps. It's like taking your souped-up car on a road trip, but with more explosions and less sightseeing. So, there you have it, the Minerva Armoured: Belgium's answer to driving into battle with style!
