I remember when this song came out in 1985. It had a high rotation on Mtv back when they actually played music videos. Their singer and lead guitarist Dave Meniketti is such a down to earth and great guy. Stardom hasn’t went to this guy’s head. I met him years ago in California and he chatted with me for a bit and he was so nice. He didn’t have a “I’m a rock star and you are beneath me” attitude. Just a great guy!!
"Keep on Running" is probably their biggest hit behind this one. And its a banger. You might be thinking of Helix, who are Canadian and have a similar sound. The robot at the end is their mascot and shows up often on their album covers and videos.
They are from Oakland, California. Originally called "Yesterday and Today" named after a Beatles album. They shortened it to Y&T on their 3rd album as that's what the fans were always chanting at the end of their shows. They inspired many bands that came after them. Lars from Metallica said he knew what he wanted to do for a living after seeing them. He saw how much fun they were having on stage. This is probably their biggest hit, but I prefer the more rocking songs, "Don't Stop Runnin'" and "Contagious".
@@EricSmith-gx7lu They, actually, broke-up/"took-a-break" after their 2nd album (as: Yesterday & Today). The closest that Y&T came to a hit single in 1985 ... Life isn't fair. Y&T deserved to be as big as Journey, Styx, Night Ranger or Triumph. It's so great you guys can appreciate this music and the ERA. This is the 80s. Clothes, hair, everything. I grew up going the beach in the 80s in So Cal. Loved It!!!👍
Definitely Venice. They didn't pay twice the budget to truck the equipment up to Santa Cruz from LA to film on a beach when they had Venice just across town. Great musicians but 4 of the worst actors in music video history.
I was in high school when this song came out. The beginning of every summer after that I have to play this song to set the mood that summer is here and it's going to be fun!
Omg I still love this song back in the 80s when me and my girlfriends will hang out in the summertime thank you for reacting to this brings me some great memories❤
@ssRocker-nn3tp Anything Y&T put out was killer. If only they got as big in America, as they were overseas. I was in Japan, for 2 years in the mid-80's. They were huge during that time there.
A great Summertime song is "Thunder Island" by Jay Ferguson. It was his only big hit but it still gets a lot of radio play. A reaction would be great, you guy's ROCK!
I saw them at the Cannery in Nastyville Tennessee in 2014. They were awesome! Dave sounded like 1980s Dave. The band ripped up the place with every great song they ever did. My ears rang for days! Great show!

Part of my best summers, 1985! Y & T, short for Yesterday & Today "Summertime Girls" along with Live Aid concert! Great time to be young! Yeah, I think their comical video came out about the same time as Huey Lewis & The News comical beach video. Who stole from who? I don't know. Hope your holiday was good. I am getting pounded by fireworks in my neighborhood as I write this!😊
Jordan just wants EVERY band to be Canadian, eh? First Blackfoot (actually from Jacksonville) and now Dave Meniketti and the boys from Oakland. Which is closer to Canada than Jacksonville, but still. This is fine summertime fun, but as I said below, I'm still waiting on "Mean Streak" and "Don't Stop Running". "She's a Liar" would be fun, too.
I just got home from seeing The Beach Boys in concert!! They sure put on a great show!! One and a half hours non stop!! All of their hits!! And John Stamos ( from Full House) was there too playing drums and guitar and he sang a tribute song to Bob Saget his Full House co star!!
One of their biggest MTV hits, and also most commercial. More Rocking Tunes are "Beautiful Dreamer ","Earthshaker ","My Heart Plays Too", and "25 Hours a Day"..
Game Playin Woman is my favorite from their Yesterday and Today album. Their first two albums from the 70s, are their best. Struck Down is real good too. They are raw sounding. Compared to their later sound under Y & T.
Saw Y&T live on the Monsters of Rock Tour. Several great bands touring playing mid size to smaller venues, they were GREAT live for sure. Most of them came out and mingled with us after the show. Great time to be alive. Glad I was born in 1960 ,I got to experience almost all the great bands from the 70's through the early 90's Literally went to concerts nearly every weekend somewhere.
This is their biggest hit. They play at the M3 Rock Festival now and again. The unfortunate thing is that the only original member in today's line up is the original lead vocalist and guitarist, Dave Meniketti. Original drummer, Leonard Haze, died in 2016 of COPD, original rhythm guitarist, Joey Alves, died in 2017 of ulcerative colitis and IBD. and the original bass guitarist, Phil Kennemore, died of lung cancer at age 57 in 2011.
There was a rock club in Brooklyn called L’Amour. It was a regular place the west coast bands came to play. I saw Y&T there in a barroom setting. It was great! Queensryche played there often but I never got to any of those shows.
Best band in the world (after kiss) massively underated Saw them in 1984 at Donington monsters of rock and seen them every year since 2009 never ever been disappointed, dave meniketti is a god
A classic. I swear it seemed they played the Concord Pavillion every Halloween back in the 80s...but I only caught them once, with Black Flag. Great show back in the high-school days. The 80s kicked ass.
Believe it or not Y&T are still touring. My son and i just seen them in Monterey California and Meniketti and the band put on one hell of a show. Yes they played Summer time girls among their huge catalog of hit songs. And they are actually a Bay Area band from Oakland California.
Best summer vibe song of all time has to be Daryl Braithwaite's 1988 song "One Summer". Always cheers me up hearing that - I need some warming up on this Australian winter's day!
Fun summertime song by a great underrated band. For future Y&T songs I would recommend Mean Streak, the guitar riff on that song is fire. Another great choice is Don’t Stop Running another song with a memorable guitar riff.
I remember this song coming out. It was probably their biggest hit...at least it got the most airplay on Mtv. They formed in San Francisco, IIRC. They played the California circuit for years, before getting a record deal. The first song I heard from them was Mean Steak on a Metal compilation record. I saw them play in Los Angeles several times, Riverside a couple times, and San Francisco once. I do remember wearing leather pants to the beach on days we had shows in Beach towns (Mainly Laguna Beach for me) and girls would rock the leather bikinis. It was not uncommon to go to the beach and pick up a girl at the bonfire parties that happened after the clubs let out. You'd spend the night together (well early morning) and then leave when the sun started coming back up. Sometimes full blown sexcapades, but usually nothing more than make out sessions. Sometimes you got a name and number, but a lot of times the girls would give a fake name and number as all they wanted was a little fun for the night. Lots of skinny dipping depending on the beach you were at.
As a freshman in high school, my older brother took me to see Motley Crue - Theater of Pain tour and Y&T opened up for them. They had this giant robot on stage. It was pretty cool. I didn't know any of their songs though. I was there for the Crue.

I met him in 1985 after their show at hammerjacks in baltimore. Super nice guy.

Very underrated band and guitarist Dave Meniketti. RIP to Leonard, Joey and Phil.

I like the song, 🤩 and video, but hate summer in Sacramento, California! 112 during the day, and 75 for the low! It's freaking awful! 😢
Sadly, only in our dreams and memories
Bay Area band and video filmed at Santa Cruz beach boardwalk
An absolute favorite of summer as a 80s teenager ❤🎉
never heard of this song in my entire life
Still on my playlist, great song
The closest thing to sounding like Sammy Hager without actually being Sammy Hager.
Yeah, but the sad thing is that if Hager or Van Halen recorded this song it would have been a huge hit. Y&T never got enough respect.
@@laudanum669 very true
Y&T - Forever, great song!!! Give it a listen.
Live version too! Stellar 🤟
They already did it. Summer time girls is one of their most generic and weakest songs. The Record company needed a hit. That,s obvious.
It's so great you guys can appreciate this music and the ERA. This is the 80s. Clothes, hair, everything. I grew up going the beach in the 80s in So Cal. Loved It!!!👍
Dave Maniketti has one of the most amazing voices. And he an shred it on guitar. They have some great songs. Not just hair metal kinda things.
Underated band. Dave Meniketti, guitar and lead vocals is a steely-eyed rock n roller.
I’m an 80’s alt fan but this song always makes me smile when I hear or play it.

Y&T is a Bay Area band, out of Oakland. The video was fined in Southern California at Venice Beach. 🙂
Nope. Santa Cruz at the Beach Boardwalk
