    “That was so ODD!” 😂 One thing to know about Ugly Kid Joe is that many of their songs are sarcastic and/or tongue in cheek, so don’t take them too seriously in that sense. As a teenager I loved their sense of humor.
    I saw them open for another band when I was in high school, and it was before this song came out and they got popular, so most of the crowd didn’t know them. Before this song, they said “We’d like to dedicate this one to all of you.” And we thought it would be a sweet song. Everyone laughed so hard when we realized what they were actually saying. I loved them after that show and became a fan, and their albums were really good! I hope you check out more of them and now you’ll know that they have a strange sense of humor. I’m sure everyone will tell you to check out “Cat’s in the Cradle”, and you should because it’s great. But their song “So Damn Cool” has one of the best guitar riffs in all of metaldom-J will LOVE it!
    Ironic that Amber was wearing a shirt about kind people during this recording though. 😂😂😂

      And it is a tragic how ridiculously politically correct/“progressive“ times are today. It’s awful. I’d give anything to live my life on a repeated loop going from when I was born in 1975 to either the day before 9/11 _OR_ up to early 2003 when the music industry imploded because of so damn much piracy, instead of living through the state of the USA today. • @erikthompson619
      @erikthompson619 11 місяців тому +12

      Actually, the song isn't about teenage angst at all. It's simply a tongue-in-cheek shout-out to the band's friend Daryl, notoriously anti-everything. Thankfully, he got the gist and was amused, not offended, by the song.

      @zmbdog 11 місяців тому

      Well, _supposed_ to open for them. The show ended up being cancelled but the name stuck around. To the benefit of both bands in the end I think. PBF got some press and Overdrive got a better name. Though I think the name Overdrive had already been ditched. That was supposedly the whole reason the name UKJ came about in the first place. They had this gig lined up but were scrambling for a name so they "inverted" PBF's name as a temporary solution.

    This song hit on something long, long forgotten; having fun and not taking things too seriously. The majority of songs in the world seem to be love songs and I've always been a fan of the 'anti-love' song (Don't Tell Me You Love Me, anyone?). Why? Because there's a tongue and cheek thing to them. Think about this song live and and the singer holding the mic to the audience at the end of the chorus. The whole crowd would shout 'HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU!'...Because it's funny.

    I see folks have already responded about the name, that it was a wink and a nod of parody to "Pretty Boy Floyd". When this song first appeared, I just laughed and laughed because it was awesome to hear something that was NOT about being in love, or how much he misses his woman, etc. Along the same vane, but much darker, is "We Hate Everyone" by Type-O Negative. Type-O was a goth metal band in the late 80s and 90s. Probably not your thing, but worth checking out. They made it big with their song "Christian Woman" which will probably offend many folks. I was always surprised it made it to the radio...........admittedly, it was the heavy metal station, but still!

    You have no idea how many radio dedications this song had....if you are even old enough to know what a radio dedication is...
    For those that aren't old enough, back in the day before the internet we listened to our music on the radio. DJs had shows and would take requests. Often these requests were dedications, so and so dedicates a certain song to his girlfriend....Well this one got dedicated to exes, and people someone just didn't like. You would hear it every Friday night here...DJ: "And here we go with another dedication going out to Freddy, Linda, Jamie, Annie, Jojo, and Scott. Y'all made someone mad. It's Ugly kid Joe with I hate everything about YOU!"
    Good times lol.

    We had Ugly Kid Joe perform at our venue a few weeks ago. 🤩 Whitfield Crane (lead singer) was such a nice guy. Polite, friendly. I jokingly asked him who he was when he came to check in (we had the keys ready ahead of time) and without hesitating he identified himself but I flipped his key onto the counter before he could finish with a big smile (couldn't help it). He smiled back and winked. Awesome! And he said our suites were sick! 😊 It's the little things. 😁

    Check out more of these guys, they rock! Another one you should check out is their cover of "Cat's in the Cradle"! They were one of the bands that came out in the early 90's that were just a little bit late to the party! Shortly before grunge took over, but still had some good stuff before they faded! 🎸🎸👍

      Totally agree cats in the cradle was a great song with meaning . But original was very slow. They amped it up, it might have been their biggest hit

    Just saw them play live!! They were really awesome. It's funny, hadn't thought about Ugly Kid Joe in a long time. Then I was perusing Ticketmaster and saw tickets available at a nearby venue, so we said what the heck. Turned out to be a really great show, despite the fact that they hadn't played in well over a decade.
    Funny that you guys are now reacting to them, the show was like two weeks ago.

    I saw him at Rockfest in KC when he was with Another Animal. He talked with a local DJ and said how he just crashed on people’s couches and traveled around. At that time he hadn’t bought a house or anything. True R&R lifestyle.

    Their debut album was called "Ugly As We Wanna Be," probably inspired by 2 Live Crew's "Nasty As We Wanna Be" or maybe James Brown's ad-libbed line "funky as we wanna be" from "Cold Sweat."

    I was laughing my butt off the second I turned on the video and saw just how perfect it was that Amber was wearing that shirt about to listen to this song! As others below have mentioned, they did a great cover of "Cats in the Cradle." The band was kind of two hit wonders. I know those were the only two songs of theirs I ever heard on the radio where I lived. I loved another song they did called "Panhandling Prince." If I remember right, it was the b-side to the "Everything About You" cassette single.

    I remember well the first time I heard this song. I was 20, and early one morning I stopped by my girlfriend's house. She was asleep in the bed with another guy. Broke my heart. I left her house and "End of the Road" by boys 2 men came on the radio. Of course that got me in my feels. I switch to a rock station and here was this awesome song!!! Totally changed my attitude!!! LOVE IT!!!

    They named their band that because they were playing their first show opening for a band called Pretty Boy Floyd and didn't have a name for their band. So at the last minute they decided on Ugly Kid Joe.

  • @jmhaces

    I loved that record when it came out. Most of their songs are tongue-in-cheek like this one, but they did have a few more serious songs like their cover of Harry Chapin's "Cats In the Cradle" and a song called "Busy Bee" that's basically about being okay with everybody because you're honestly too busy to have time to hate everything and eveybody all the time.

    What a banger! So much fun! We used to shout out these lyrics at each other while partying to this when it came out in high school! Good times! "Cats In The Cradle" is another great song they released, a cover I believe, but they made their own.

    As I heard it, they were having trouble deciding on a name and had gone through several. Then they were performing a show and going on after a band called, "Pretty Boy Floyd." So as a bit of a joke they came out as "Ugly Kid Joe," and it stuck.

    I love Amber so much! Even though this song was the polar opposite of her personality she still got into it and gave it a chance, finding things to praise even when the lyrics didn’t resonate at all. Maybe y’all can use this to connect to the teens in your life who are having one of those bad times when it seems like everything pisses you off. It would probably make good workout music on the day after a loss too.

    So, from what I understand, they were getting ready to play with Pretty Boy Floyd, and still hadn't found a name. So they were like what's the opposite of that, and still sounds cool, so it's a play on that name. And my mom who was born in the forties, absolutely adored this song when she heard it, she thought it was hilarious, and would request I play it a lot, along with AC/DC!
