Great video as always. When I got my w140 about 3yrs ago. I replaced most of the failing suspension ( shocks, rubber mounts, and other suspension related items). Then the Aircon went out, softdoor, locking actuator, missing plastic parts, and a whole lots of other stuff that you’ve mentioned. Now the car is almost perfect but there is more work to be done. Like with any old cars. Is not how much you spent on the car is how much passion and joy it brings you. It’s the excitement of finding pieces that belongs in the car and replacing it to make it “perfect in your eyes”.
How do u know if the shocks need to be replaced? My wife recently inherited a pristine condition 1993 400SEL with 47k miles (it seriously looks like it just rolled out the dealership, even the leather seats look new). So i found a set of 4 new shocks in the trunk and now I’m wondering if her dad was planning on replacing them. He was a huge car enthusiast and loved doing all work and maintenance but also loved having spare parts for everything. So i’m not sure if they need to be replaced or just got them as spares…
@@CarlosG2288 If your shocks are leaking or if you are experiencing a harsh ride. I'm assuming, her dad just bought it as for spare parts. Does your 400SEL come with the ABC system (Active Body Control)?
You should do one on a w140 that has sat for years. Injectors fuel pumps filters, switches doors windows etc. Fuel and vaccum hoses that kind of stuff.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention one of the most well know failure points on this car: the electrically adjusted rear view mirror. Apparently, drivers would try to manually adjust it and it would damage it. It was so common that MB eliminated the feature. But maybe you didn't include it as it may not have been present on later years of the 140.
Thank you for your W140 videos. I am a huge fan of these cars even today. I own a 1996 S420 and a 1999 S500. I also bought a limo version of the S500. I will continue to collect these cars as resources and time permit. The best car ever as far as I am concerned.
Wow. Look at the list for an old french or british car. I'm going for it....A chance to own a piece of the pinnacle of motoring engineering. Buying one of a choice of 4 on Saturday. Wish me luck. And thanks for the great video.. You have a calming voice....we might need that calming if hydraulic leaks are present. lol
How about the wiring harness in earlier models. Is it just the engine harness or whole vehicle harness? W140 seem to hold its value quite well. Here, northwest coast us. I found two under 60k miles with the asking price under $19K both are 1997, one is S320 and other S500. I’m trying to find the SEC two door version but so far V12 models. That’s too expensive for DIY retired me. But I may try find a W126 SEC500 model that’s less complicated. Prices of nice ones are above $25K and up.
Crankshaft position sensors fail too after time on W140 - will stall reaching operating temperature, restart when cooled but will eventually fail totally. Plus side - inexpensive fix.
Very Great and Informative. I have one where the back doors won't open. Does ANYBODY HAVE A CLUE? Motor rans pretty good though. Electrical, Plastic, Windows, Cruise Control, Sun Roof, Door Locks Paint AMG Wheels AC Compressor,Leather Seats cracked all need TLC. But I blew the doors off these people at a Stop light when I dropped it onto Low. When I finish this Restoration it will be A Holy Ghost!!! Thanks again Jay Neuhaus
Yes the outside mirror motors both go out!! And not cheap to fix off course drive gear box and dampening system went out at 90k otherwise my 97 s420 w140 runs like a charm! But may investigate the eight suspension mounts and springs
Excellent list, bit off-putting. I'm currently looking to buy W140 S600 V12 engine. That car has two problems from this list: foggy front and rear windows and blown engine head gasket. The car itself is stationary since December 2019. The cost of the car is 3000 euros, but, as per my estimation, 3000 euros more will need to be spent to get it up to specs.
The "mph" gage is really an Instantaneous Fuel Flow Indicator. Properly used, in conjunction with the human brain and the rear view mirror, it almost teaches the driver how to think like a Tesla on maximum regenerative braking. Being poor or having to buy gas in California speeds up the process.
Interesting video. Looking into buying one of these, and wondering whether it’s worth it to buy one with low miles for a high price, or save $20k and buy a regular one from the used market, and fix the issues as they come. I guess my question is, is low miles a good thing on these cars? Does it necessarily mean a more solid car?
I'm working on a S600 V12. Has most issues you listed. Most I've repaired. All Dash Illuminates when park lights on don't come on including number plate lights. All other lights are working. All fuses in both Engine bay and trunk are good. What can this problem be
I am looking at a 1996 s600 but it doesn’t have parktronic it still the 2 sticks at the back, could this be because it might be built in 1995 as a 1996 model year? What should I look at specifically for the v12 model?
I would be surprised if I could find one without any of the issues reviewed in the video. Maybe if it has been taken care only by rich people which most of us are not.
My w140 rear driver window reg is broken, rear headrests do not work and soft close doors need resetting every few days. Other than that. It's a peach with 140k miles...for now ha
Amazing video, i am wondering if i should buy a w140 s600 1997 145km but it has alot of stuff changed such as battery and this stuff but the car is well saved and its very clean so what should i do?
With that age and mileage of course the battery, brake pads, water pump, and ignition coils have been replaced. If the car has a clean interior, engine bay and fender wells, it was probably well-taken care of. I own a 1996 S600 and a 1997 S500, and my only complaint is the poor city mileage on the S600 (which is understandable).
Excellent video. Do you think $1,500 usd is a good price for a fair condition ( runs and drives ok) w140? For the price I think you can't go wrong but I'm always skeptical avout deals too good to be true. Thanks !
lol high temperature and failing catalytic converter i have in my w202 😂😂😂😂 and a lot of what i hear i also has them on my W202 or they are about to happen
@@boring659 I worked on them since they were new and into their older mileage years. Great for my shop. Just not a car I would want to own. Now that's just my personal opinion. Others love them.

As long as it brings you joy, these cars reward owners tremendously when they are well taken care of

Worth collecting. Amazing cars they are. Built like a tank.
Id love to see an unbiased review of the w140
Add “oil tube fail” it commonly happens to all W140.

Great Job H&L Team. This was really helpful. I was wondering if your team could do a film on W126 S class
One day perhaps! The W126 is a very handsome car that has aged well. Less to go wrong in a W126, but also challenging to restore.
+ 1 for the 126. 🙏♥️
Crankshaft position sensors fail too after time on W140 - will stall reaching operating temperature, restart when cooled but will eventually fail totally. Plus side - inexpensive fix.
Yes, that is true. Most of the sensors fail after a couple of decades, but are inexpensive to replace
Currently looking at one right now. Still kinda debating put thanks a lot
Consider it carefully, then commit to your decision and don't look back.
What about the 722.6 transmission issue where the fluid goes up wiring harnessto the TCU module under the hood ?

For the age, low mileage doesn't help. We would rather buy a regularly driven car that has been maintained well.
