What still baffles me to this day is that most so called "gamers" have little to no understanding of the industry they spend thousands if not more a year on and that concepts like "player retention" and l"ive service" have little to no meaning to them. Most think that companies like Bungie wants to satisfy the customer, when in fact they want to retain you. ...And if you don't understand the difference, then you're part of the problem of the issues that plague modern gaming and most likely also you are critical about.
You shouldn’t have to understand the industry, only the product/service the industry is providing. Why people make excuses for shoddy products/services that I will never understand.
@@TNTITAN Because they themselves are personally invested into those products for one reason or another, so when someone tells them that a thing they like is sub-par in comparison to modern/past standards - they feel that it's necessary to justify as to why they still enjoy a sub-par thing. It gets even worse when the product/celebrity/company is able to create a whole following around itself.
That's why I hate Elden Ring. Game is still good, it's just blatantly made to keep fans in place and get their money. The only thing i was satisfied about in ER was being able to change my appearance infinitely whenever i wanted.
@@rageknight2340 for me its halo,overwatch,COD...all the games i grew up playing early 2000's and the overwatch in 2016 are MILES better then what we have now...its actually laughable how they are better
@@yourcomradepal978 I would love to keep playing *any* version of Overwatch 1 instead of whatever they have now. 6v6 was making Overwatch 1 such a unique game.
Hey, I finished Fallout 1 in June, and I just started another play through. It is genuinely the best role-playing game I have ever played. I must be blinded by nostalgia.
I played God of War 1 and 2 about a year ago, and despite having never played any GoW game, never having watched anyone play it, and never even hearing or seeing anything about it while growing up, i loved both the gameplay and the aesthetics/graphics. (seriously those games look fantastic) *I must be blinded by nostalgia.*
I played it a few years back. Never played it before. Had to learn the controls and it was clunky to get used to. But damn was it worth it. My favourite in the series by far. But I guess I just have nostalgia.
I managed to beat and enjoy Daggerfall a few months ago, I must be blinded by nostalgia as well despite starting with Morrowind and putting a lot of hours in Skyrim while not liking Daggerfall years ago until someone made a sourceport that I tried years later.
Graphics obsession killed this industry now it cost 200-250 million to make a big game rather than "just" 30 or 40 million mostly due to all the graphical obsession.
It also killed off talented developers. Back before the 2010s you had to optimize and perfect games like crazy, especially regarding graphics. Everything you put in the game had to matter, more or less. Both the code and visuals where practically perfected to be as efficient as possible, at least relatively to today. Nowadays they're so incompetent that games run like molasses despite having 1000x the processing power, memory storage, etc...
Its not necessarily all Graphic Obsession. You have to think about it like this, youre developing a Game for several years without earning a dime up until to the release of the product. A Game that comes out today has basically the tech of 4 years ago. So its a financial Risk to develop Games. How do you mitigate that? Well the industry trend is to just make the most bog standard triple A Game and then sell it to the wider Mass. It works as you can tell by games like Fifa and CoD. Even though CoD had a lot of scrutiny your average consumer still bought it and the sales numbers show. Indie devs are often newcomers to the industry so they need to have a banger of a Game or the Sales won't finance the dev time it took to make the game. Well how do you finance the dev time at all then until Release? Publishers are an option if you lack funding ( for example Devolver Digital). It goes like this: You Pitch your Game -> they give you a Budget -> You develop the Game TLDR; Big Game Devs nowadays have found a formula that works for Games and their Average Consumer, so they apply it as long as they can to min max earnings, developing Games is always a financial risk. (look at Volition, devs of Saints row, now closing)
One of the simplest answers to "its just nostalgia" is the change in buisness of video games. Back then, it HAD to be finished and it HAD to be good at release to MAYBE get sales out of the door. Nowadays with the "day 1 patch" and live service nature of games you just have to "fix" it eventually. Its literally that simple
Plus games back then were "one price for the game" kinda deal, no microtransactions, no battle passes to pay for the grind of doing, modding was endorsed without a poor multimillion company restricting it all jsut so they have more freedom to be "creative" with what they shove into the in-game microtransactions store and are sterile with how little content they can get away with giving to the players and sell stuff community could of made prolly better as DLCs as well, one or two "story missions" kind of deal, as a treat to their money whales, oh and yeah expansion packs back then, with enough content to be their own game unlike what's the case with DLCs nowadays.
@@NotRenjiro Yup, True Crime NYC is busted on Xbox, compared to Gamecube and PS2, all because one missing animation for a mission which results for it to never progress, the only thing folks do back then is to mess around with Debug mode because for some reason the devs forgot to remove it, perhaps they accidentally shipped development build lol
@@PikadaveStudios I didnt like Bioshock but I loved System Shock 2 which I actually played afterwards but since its older I guess people would say im blinded by nostalgia.

Bro conflict happens in every community bro. Like how some mathematicians or physicists argue about many different theories and stuff. Even in novels for example. Some people say Sci fi novels have gone woke some say they haven't. So its okay. Not specific to gaming.
I completely agree, EA remaking the same games every year is not creative at all and its also flat out dumb that it works. “People do what they can get away with” if we keep allowing these sub par games to release it’ll only get worse.
@@jackieirving3017That was the original vision they had, but limits back then forced them to make new games to keep up with transfer market. And that has stuck around.
Yeah, sport games ruined time and time again. FiFA , maden. etc. just rehash and half butts work eveyr time. and people eat that horse apples each time.
even dead space remake falls into this area, its by means not a bad game, but its a rehash of a franchise they killed, and a game people praised suddenly forgetting its EA.
Old games might have some quirks that wouldn’t exist these days, but they were made less cynically before. It’s almost like the focus was on being entertaining, or even FUN. What a concept! Now it’s about how little they have to do to get the most amount of money. I feel bad for devs who got sold the idea that they’d be able to make cool stuff only to be told to slow down or give up.
Aaaall the way back then you also didn't have day 1 patch notes nor updates really. You had one chance with your game, you either went out strong or it flopped instantly. Oh and expansion packs? Good ones were like their own separate game you could get on top of the regular game and not just some funky overpriced skins and maybe a "story mission" or two. And they didn't have microtransactions hamfisted everywhere into the *fully priced games* like nowadays. It was one price for whole damn thing then expansions. Not an exlusive payment to open the game and get greeted to a store with a game attached to it.
The difference between old games that were really bad and new games that are really bad is that noone would defend a bad game or simp for the devs. These days it seems some people literally get off on cognitive dissidence
You can’t say it’s just nostalgia if you’re actively playing new Vegas in 2023. Clearly it’s not lol. Also in the borderlands 3 clip in the beginning when modern writing was mentioned was spot on. The writing in that game unfortunately was just almost unbearable at times
That's a very good point I don't see made most of the time. Nostalgia is the pretty face that gets your foot in the door, but the content underneath is what keeps you there.
Yeah loads of people will scream "nostalgia" at everything, but they don't realize what they're actually arguing. Nostalgia blindness is often found among people who haven't touched the game they're talking about in years, thus allowing their memory to be vague and recall things like better controls or maybe better voice acting that was never actually there. If you just played it yesterday, you've got a far more accurate memory and it's hard to be blinded.
Is THAT what that clip was? - I haven't even played the games, but I could tell as soon as I thought about it for more than 5s that that line was just awful - like literally _stating your abilities??_ hello?? I literally know the solution just by _osmosis_ of good writing: have her instead say "you really thought I couldn't leech you?" in the presence of a rookie character, followed by an explanation to that character later. Done. Not that deep.
saying "its just nostalgia" is equivalent to inhaling a massive dose of copium. People just don't want to accept that things suck because that's depressing. But the reality is we have to accept it if we ever want them to stop sucking.
I think that a lot of them are kind of new to gaming, they weren't hardcore gamers for 10 years, they just started playing video games in their 20s because it become popular. They are not able to bear the older graphics and can not enjoy old games, because they don't understand that technological progress isn't everything. Most climatic game I played was literally made in 2001, it looks bad I admit, it was limited by its times and it doesn't have artstyle that keeps it fresh, but I still call it most climatic game I played because of the dialogues, story, characters etc. People who cannot bear older graphics will not be able to immerse themselves and enjoy old games, so they call them crappy instead as massive cope, to not feel like they miss on something great
I think part of why having such honest debates has become more difficult is due to more people being introduced to the Internet at a younger age. Ages so young, that the words they see easily make deep impressions in their mind, ones that stay their as they develop their values and world view. So now when you criticize a piece of media associated with them, they see it as an attack on themselves.
Exactly! And to add to that, it's also related to defining words. Liberals and conservatives discussing racism devolves to what the word racism means, and in this case, it's discussing what nostalgia means. People who aren't aware of what primacy bias is would go to the second closest definition they have, which is a terrible argument when trying to debate a point of view.
To me, it always boils down to whether or not a game has *Soul.* The overwhelming majority of modern games being released have little to no *soul,* making the experience bland, boring, uninspired, and unmemorable. To your point, you enjoyed New Vegas not because it has been your favorite game for decades, but because the game has an incredible amount of *soul* in every area of its design. When we enjoy and prefer older titles, it isn't because we're longing for the days in which we initially played it, though that sometimes is the case, we prefer them because of the sheer amount of charm, creativity, vision, drive, and passion behind the projects. Market capitalism has put a seemingly impenetrable chokehold around the *soul* of videogames, leaving most modern titles with little to no reason to play them. The argument of nostalgia is perpetually taken out of context; we're not pining for our youth, we're pining for games that have *soul.*
“Soul” is nothing but a buzzword. Whenever I ask anyone what “soul” actually is in games they never, ever give an actual answer. At most it just boils down to “old thing (good)>new thing (bad).” Even in your comment you never actually even clarify what “soul” is.
@@Brapgod Soul is the evidence of singular vision and effort put into a project, the traces of a creator's will. It's that aspect of it that proves someone made what they, personally, wanted to make. It's the thing that separates a passion project from a corporate one. It's a subtle part of the conversation a piece of art has with the viewer. The reason no one's defined it for you is because it's like trying to teach you to spot written sarcasm in a language you don't even speak, it just isn't that simple. Most people just have a solid feeling for it.
@@Brapgod "sheer amount of charm, creativity, vision, drive, and passion behind the projects" is a pretty apt description of what I mean when I say the soul of a videogame. There *IS* an undefinable aspect of a games soul that is universally felt by the player, if you don't have that knowledge of what a game with soul feels like, I feel sorry for you. Nostalgia is a buzzword, buzzword itself is a buzzword. Lastly, I highly doubt you're actively asking people about a games soul considering your disdain for the term.
@@ImInForAWuppin that does make more sense, but it’s still such a broad and vague criteria people could easily find “soul” in literally anything in a game, whether it be graphics, art-direction, soundtrack, mechanics, etc. As such I still think it’s retarded way to seriously rate games on whether or not they have “soul” because “soul” by your definition is just the extremely subjective preference that varies widely from person to person.
Nowadays, the so called triple A games tend to be like: "How can we shove an ingame shop to sell and promote dlcs first, fix broken game second" Even in single player games with their day one dlc cosmetics or exp boosters. Man... I still think back on ps2 when we had to beat games on super hard dificulty to unlock those, now they are just locked behind a paywall. Hell, not to metion the loot boxes xD Seriously sometimes it feels like I'm watching a comercial instead of playing the freaking game. Then we have Ubisoft and the others like them that get mad at baldurs gate 3 and elden ring for their success... xD You can still make money without all that predatory microtransaction stuff and make a good game, did you know that? Crazy right!?
I couldn't have said it better myself. Look at what I did with games from the past on modern consoles like Final Fantasy 7, The Legend of Dragoon, Kingdom Heart 1 & 2, Silent Hill 2, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid 3, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Dead Space 1 & 2, Halo 4, and, of course, recently, Fallout 4. Not for nostalgia but for the story, art direction, and musical score. Aesthetics, too.
Most developers are so out of touch with what players actually loved that they focus on the most unimportant stuff and mess up the core of the said game and getting toyed by publishers and corporations to focus on money revenue. With nowdays few exceptions in the AAA industry.
If it really was just nostalgia, then we would’ve hated Red Dead Redemption 2, or Elden Ring, or Mario Wonder, or Spider-Man 2, or newer Christopher Nolan movies. But that’s just not the case.
I have to say, I really hate what you say sometimes. Some of the points you make really boil my blood. But I think it's because I'm so stuck in my own head that I want to keep those rose-colored glasses on. The second someone tries to take them off and show me reality, I try my best to avoid them as much as possible. Man, your last few videos make a whole lot of sense and raise a lot of valid points and critiques. Do I like that hard truth? Hell no. I still despise it, actually. But the truth is the truth. You keep standing on that hill, my guy, because it's a hill many need to start climbing as well. And I'm 1000% one of them.
Great comment. So many are usually fully on their respective side, but it's really cool to see someone taking in an opinion. Enough to honestly say their original viewpoint, but not being afraid to show humility in admitting the other person has points.
A great way to look at Recency vs Nostalgia in video games is also to consider the music scene: "Classics" which we all love listening to from previous decades were for the most part the Pop music of their generation. The ones that survived into further generations were the ones well written or which had something unique. There were plenty of other tracks from that time period that didn't survive because they were just not that good. And looking to modern music, there are heaps of songs in the Pop music scene that are popular for a year or two and then disappear, they won't be the ones that survive the test of time. The ones that do become the "classics" of later generations. Same with video games: I still go back and play the games I grew up with; Sega Genesis games, Nintendo 64 games, original Command & Conquer etc. But I'm not going back and playing the flops from that era, they don't survive. Same for modern stuff; games that came out less than a year ago are already fading from public consciousness, they won't survive. But there are absolute bangers being released that will survive the test of time.
Yep, exactly the only difference in gaming is that the roles flipped, small studios that made those budget/ half done games in the past are now the ones making most of the good stuff, while big corps evolved into the ones putting out polished (sometimes) garbage; as corporations always do tbf
And to use your music example as to what primacy bias can do, there's a lot of good music nowadays with musicians far more talented than the old musicians, but will get shoved away because they're not "legends" like the old ones. People are sad guitar music is "dead" but ignore that there are countless of amazing guitarists who are still revolutionizing techniques, but when presented to the public, they're usually dismissed for whatever reasons. It's like lamenting being born in an age where we don't exist with the legends everyone keeps talking about, while ignoring the potential of new legends to rise in our current times. We see scientists or artists who were hated by the people of their times, and we know "they were ahead of their times"... People are scared of traveling to the past because of the butterfly effect which can drastically change the future, but fail to realize that they are drastically changing the future TODAY, and it all depends on weather or not I hit the "reply" button after writing this huge-ass comment. In short: Nostalgia is a bad argument, recency bias and affect opinions, but so can primacy bias, which is the correct argument that people should be using instead of nostalgia.
Exactly this. I've argued this a few times. To me it just shows most people do not understand what nostalgia is and how it works. It's a sensory experience based on memory. Enjoying a game is a mechanical-sensory reward feedback based on your immediate environment, nothing to do with memories. Many of us have wonderful memories of playing with toys, but we all know most grown men aren't gonna get any enjoyment pretending their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures are fighting their Shredder figure. Their whole argument of nostalgia dictating enjoyment of a interactive immediate mechanical challenge is a logical fallacy. Unfortunately, most people do not have the ability to use logic and reason, and don't make any effort to double check their own assumptions and research things.
@@Artesian_mirage Whats funnier is that those who throw the word nostalgia as a way of dismissing any criticism towards whatever recently released game, movie or other product are experiencing recency bias (thinking that new is always better). As you said nostalgia is having fond memories of something you *did* enjoy but you wouldn't now (the action figure analogy being a perfect example). If can watch an old movie and still enjoy it it's not nostalgia and to me it's better that what has currently come out be it my opinion or a fact.
I got so many nostalgia comments when I said I prefer the og resident evil 4 even though I played it for the first time a couple of months before the remake came out
Me: Dark Souls 1 is the best Souls game "You're just blinded by nostalgia" Me: *played through all the Souls games back to back for the first time in 2020* The nostalgia argument is fucking stupid.
I emulated Mario sunshine after years of not playing it and was stunned by how responsive it is compared to modern games where you are glued to the ground because Devs are obsessed with realism
I played Super Mario Odyssey recently, and was stunned by how responsive it was compared to older games like Gears Of War, and Resident Evil, where you are glued to the ground because devs back then were obsessed with realism.
Thank you for being an honest male role model for gamers worldwide. Some may criticize you for being grandstanding or attempting to give a parental lecture on these topics, but in reality, clearly some people need a parental figure to point these things out. It's a plague on our psyches to continue to just ignore issues and consume the world around us. I hope that yours, and the many others that share your sentiment, continue to flourish and be able to reach more people with what could now be considered a "fresh" perspective. I remember when my older brother of 6 years would give me insight into facets of life that I didn't understand. I would hear it and not think much at first, but hours later it would click and I'd silently appreciate him for it. He unfortunately became an addict to many things and has slowly deteriorated to a husk of himself. Now I feel like I'm the one giving him insight into facets of life. It feels odd and I'm sure it makes the both of us feel frustrated, but when you really care about something; you just man up and do it. And these topics, while it could be considered frivolous and unimportant in the Grand Scheme of the World, the underlying mentalities that led to the State of Gaming in 20xx still persist and leach into other areas of creativity and innovation. A depression of the Arts and Crafts is a depression on the World at Large. "So you can think about that... The next time your sorry ass asks us to bow down to you." - RIP Lance Reddick.
Sad to know your brother succumbed to addiction, it's awful to see family members go through that. One question though, how is this youtuber supposed to be a male role model specifically? Asking cuz I agree with many things he said as I came to similar conclusions long before finding this video, while not being male
No more addictive than any other hobby. If a person is primed to succumb to addiction, it could be knitting, extreme sports or collecting things that they get addicted to. The hobby itself is not at fault for it. In direct contrast to substances that cause a demonstrable addiction/withdrawal.@@kiwikemist
I once said I thought the original Fallout was better than Fallout 4. I got called blinded by nostalgia. Fact is I only said it because I was playing it at the time, for the first time ever. Can't be nostalgic for something you've never played before...
It's not nostalgia. Most modern games are corporatized, soulless, and repeat patterns and trends most of the time. Monetization takes precedent over everything. Whether anyone wants to admit or not, the politicalization of almost everything has ruined character development most of the time. Updates have become a reliance on fixing unfinished, unoptimized games instead of a benefit to make them even better. Over inflated budgets with less and less content lately for higher asking prices. I don't see any of this being sustainable. Maybe it's become to mainstream and been ruined by the masses some would say. Maybe it's simply corporate greed. Maybe it's a lack of talent and creativity in our culture. Maybe it's a combonation of all 3. Either way something is wrong and your right, it's not nostalgia.
Everything is mainstream now in some way shape or form. Even some indie games. It's become an internet cliché to say mainstream and politics ruined everything
A lot of the flaws of modern gaming are ALSO prevalent in movies these days. Media in general... I miss when games were made out of passion and artistry rather then to exclusively make money.
Dark Souls actually helped me fight off my depression at a young age. I had suffered in silence for years until I couldn't keep myself together. My family thought I was just "faking it" which made things worse. I was shoved into the work force as a temp and when I was eventually let go (as most temps usually are) my father thought that I was nothing more than a lazy good-for-nothing that couldn't hold down a job and was about ready to kick me out of the house. Instead, one of the peers they met at Sunday congregation told my dad and mom they would take me off their hands for a few days as they needed someone to house-sit anyway. There I was, separated from my family again (as I was all alone when I went to university before flunking out the first time); but I had my computer and Prepare to Die was just released on PC. The world was isolated, cold, and inherently hostile. Everything that I had felt up to that point in my own life resonated with this setting. Things would attack you without any reason or motive, _yet here I was free to attack back._ The world was against me, hated me even; and yet it could not kill me. It just changed my outlook honestly, one of the first stepping stones which did so. I spent five days by my lonesome, eating scraps and getting my face smashed in until the game's walls gave out from my rampant cranial bludgeoning. I immediately began indulging in media like Berserk and Demon's Souls; settings that were excruciatingly hostile and outright evil and began mentally incorporating how I felt which later gave me new ways to think and mechanisms on how to cope. I know it sounds stupid, but this helped me more than the antidepressants a few years later I didn't even need them anymore. I think I've earned at least a little nostalgia here and there.
Thanks for sharing. I too have felt Dark Souls helped me overcome one of the Darkest moments of my own life. Pulled me out of a bad mental state when I realized I can overcome anything even if the odds seem stacked against me. Perseverance and adapting. It’s been one of the best teachers for me. I will always owe a lot to the Souls games.
I have to say.. darksouls really helped me through university. I was living with my cousin at the time. A very hostile and negative person at the time. Had a bunch of friends there too.. smoking weed daily. I had to work too. Was havely depressed in my teenage years. Got over it. Now i got to be a heavier depressed adult. It got me through it... throw yourself against a wall untill you break it. It doesn't work? Learn something new do something different and it gets easier. I played the rest of from soft games after. Replayed dark souls and it was way easier second time around. I have to say.. i got from feeling like giving up to top of the class. It taught me to do my best and change my approach. I would kiss Miyazaki if i could.

People use this argument because they are ashamed that the best stuff they got isn't half as good as some of the worst games we grew up with. Forspoken would've been bottom of the barrel trash if it came out in 2011, BG3 is praised because it has role-playing? Role-playing mechanics, in an RPG? I'm tired of paying more for less.

The terms "relativity" and "subjectivity" have both become synonymous to excuses made by people that can't accept the fact that, yes, the objective reality of quality does exist even in the art/entertainment field. Heck, I'd say and argue it exists a crap ton more there, but it's just a complex thing to discuss due to the nature of human creativity and passion. That's coming from me, an illustrator in the indie art space. I'm not the best at what I do, but I damn sure well know just how much the quality of my works impact whether or not I'll get clients or if the projects I'm making will be considered by those that see 'em as great, good enough, or just outright bad. If I don't allow for myself to understand and live in that reality, I cannot improve my craft to an objective degree. And, before anyone asks the question often structured as "but how do you measure quality in art", there are ways to measure quality, but it'll have to depend on a lot of factors, the medium of the work, the intent, and so on. For example, a film's cinematography can be critiqued with how the scene's color scheme is in line with color theory or the choice of a camera's lens, positioning, movement. In my case with the illustrations I make, how I depict anatomy, lighting, shadows, architecture, and even abstract ideas are subject to methods of measuring real-life things that I learned back in my engineering college days and how I've studied the field I'm now in. While nostalgia may be a factor as to why we love so many old products, people forget that it is, in fact, just that... a factor.
If I'm blinded by nostalgia, then that must mean I was born when Metal Slug first came out (I wasn't). The only nostalgia I have is for Jaws, but even that I contribute to fond memories I had with my great grandparents as a kid. Memories that I grew attached to after they passed
The problem is when you make sweeping statement about the industry as a whole, that’s when it becomes a problem. Comparing specific games is not being blinded by nostalgia, but saying that games used to be better is. But I guess that Shark Tale the video game is better than Elden Ring, because old games are better than new ones.

The default argument there is usually when you're much younger, you enjoy just about any game you play if you are a fan of video games. Which holds truth to it, but doesn't necessarily mean you have to gravitate toward every single game you played back then.
THANK YOU! I have been saying this for some time, if everyone just stopped buying this stuff, we wouldn't have any issues! it's the same thing with fast food and everything bad we treat our bodies with, Capitalism is about supply&demand, if we just stop buying it, they're forced it change and give us what we want! the only ones to blame, are ourselves for allowing this.. apathy will be the death of creativity.
Nice to see someone bring up capitalism without going all "EvERytHiNG iS CApiTaliSMs FauLT!!!111" Those kinds of people look at the money-hungry corporations and blame capitalism (probably because of indoctrination and propaganda), not realizing (or not caring) that capitalism is exactly what can *prevent* said corporations from earning a single dime... It's like watching a show you hate, and then blaming the TV remote for what you're watching... Like holy hell, you can use the remote to change the channel! Or better yet, just stop watching all together and convince others to do the same.
I just had this interaction with somebody where I commented on a Monster Hunter video that basically asked if too many conveniences were causing Monster Hunter to change as a franchise for the worse. This was meant to be a sophisticated discussion where people can share differing viewpoints as to why they felt the way they did, and was presented this way by the poster of the video. I stated my opinion that yes, the identity of the series IS being ruined by, and for the sake of, convenience. Someone immediately responded to me with “that sounds a lot like a ‘back in my day’ type of statement. Things change.” Like what???? I don’t even think this person has played any of the older titles. I never said I was opposed to change. Just that the change that was happening over the latest iterations of the series has not been good. He immediately figured I was blinded by nostalgia instead of taking any of my points seriously… and he hasn’t even played the old games. While I myself have played just about every game in the franchise. Who would have a better understanding of this topic? How could he decide if it’s changing for the worse if he never played the old games?? It was the easiest option for him to just say “nostalgia goggles” rather than doing any actual research and forming a real opinion and then sharing it like an adult.
That’s how some people are nowadays can’t just agree to disagree and just try to shut down others. I agree that MH is not the same as it use to be and that the removal and tweaking they did to make the game more mainstream took away from what made the game that niche game that people loved. To me MH4U was peak monster hunter
People who often use the "blind nostalgia" argument, are lazy and don't understand that a lot of old games were just better in some ways. Modern gaming has become hollow. Very few of them, I even care about anymore. Recent bias is right.
the problem is not that someone is blinded by nostalgia or recency bias, it's that their enjoyment of a video game has nothing to do with its objective qualities. the reasons people come up with are nothing more than rationalizations of unconscious feelings.
So glad you brought up the God of War example. Every time I mention that the OG trilogy are much better games than the current ones the nostalgia argument always comes up, saying that I am stuck in the past or that I just want Kratos to be a "mindless murderer". As someone who believes a videogame needs to be a *game* before anything else, and that how good the gameplay and interactive experience is defines 70-80% of its quality, I would rather take going on a rampage against a pantheon of gods than hours of cutscenes, (unskippable) sections in which you are just walking around for a character to throw some exposition and a pretentious story.
I play games for almost 20 years...and know what? Actually not so much has changed. There is one masterpiece, 2 more great games, 5 more good games with some problems and 10 that can be described as "bearable". And hundreds of shit games that are so bad that they are not even worth of attention given to them in any way. It happens every 3-5 years since 90-s and nothing has changed nowdays. What HAS changed is an attitude to games. Now people are waiting for every second game to be a masterpiece. And for the most part their hopes get crushed by reality. And the second thing is online gaming. All multiplayer games have to be maintained. And all these kinds of games are inebitably become worse one way or another. Bad decisions, lack of creativity, recycled content, feeding on promises, some of which are false or unfulfilled. Destiny 2 is no exception. When it stops bringing me fun and interest to play I just go away to another game without a thought. There are so much good games around to play. If some MMORPG I've been waiting for some time become garbage, I'll just move forward and play something else and wait for next MMORPG. It is what it is. It is life. Life is big. Don't waste it for some wierd discussions like what's dead and what is not. Just do what you like to do and play what you want to play. It's that simple.
As a 14 yearold who started playing games like Halo 3ish years ago, I can safely say it is definitely not nostalgia. The only real nostalgia I have is from before all my friends switched to Minecraft Java Edition which hardly has multiplayer because "its' better."
Your videos are a treat. I listen to you like a great storyteller. You are talented to keep my attention; which nowadays is fragile. Excellent video. I am an old gamer, 53, and I see what you mean. I have been there. Example the evolution of Splinter Cell. It started so well but was diluted by bad story and devs not listening to what the fans want. You can see this mess on all fronts.
I love when people throw nostalgia at me when I say new games are worse than ever. Like yes, because I am definitely nostalgic about things I experienced in the absolute worst times of my life. The games are definitely only good because it brings my back to a time of extreme trauma.
Then when you try to argue with them, they just call you “negative” and that gaming has never been better. Bs lmao. Theres this thing people dont know about called “toxic positivity”
I honestly enjoy older games more than modern ones and isn’t nolstagia as I didn’t grow up with the games I was playing, the old deus ex and human revolution and half life for example, I fucking love those games. Idk they just hit different than these overly polished boring heartless games. Ironically the games I should have nolstagia for I no longer like
Metroid Prime has one of the best examples of a remake too. The game simply looks better and feels the same. Doesn't try to change the familiarity, well adding more to it in a good way.
This gets even worse when you factor in remakes, I'm so sick of remake slop. The best part is it's objectively a non-sustainable practice because so many of them are focused on "modernizing" a classic which will only plant it in the current day thus inevitably dating it. Anyone who unironically thinks the Silent Hill 2 remake for example is still gonna be discussed in 20 years the way the original is discussed is an absolute clown.
I remember booting up an emulator, and feeling "man, this is a good game." and sunk hours on games I never tried as a kid, immersed. Bad graphics, sure. But I'd take it over this new buggy good looking mess with mid-content. Have standards, and make sure companies respect them. Have refined tastes and if a game is trash, its trash. It's your money.
@@NovemberHotelI think those games that appeal to "twitter bot" are purposely made bad. Adding those won't affect the gameplay and you still can create a good story with it. I enjoy games playing as female and now many games appeal to female representation more. Also I prefer playing male characters that are young like in their 20s and not 40s with cliche grumpy or badass personality like Kratos.
Considering the release of the recent Resident Evil 4 remake this was predictably the #1 thing people would say to someone with literally ANY criticism for it. While the remake was fantastic I have many gripes with it that I don't share with the original, hence why I prefer the og. But discussing this (at least on the internet) was impossible without hearing "nostalgia bias", "blinded by nostalgia" constantly.
The amount of time I play game and people online would just say "you are blinded by nostalgia" and I'm here like "Bro... I just played this game for the first time 2 months ago... what nostalgia are you talking about"
Consoomers: "Nah dude you're just blinded by nostalgia" Also consoomers: "OMG! ANOTHER SHITTY REMAKE OF A GAME FROM MY CHILDHOOD! I MUST PRE-ORDER AND CONSOOOOM!"
Can we all also agree Dark Souls 2's Majula theme is the most used backing song for videos these days? And I'm so fucking happy to hear it, I absolutely adore ds2. (Please don't hurt me.)
I also hate that any genre that isn’t third person action adventure or scripted first person shooter or RPG with real time combat gets called outdated or a step backwards in gaming. And before people accuse me of being a Boomer or a millennial I’m not, I am a part of Generation Z and I hate TikTok for the damage it caused to people’s attention span. So don’t even try the Boomer/millennial argument with me, even now I doubt the majority of people will read this comment because it’s too long for their TikTok addicted brains. Not all of you of course but the Triple Alers these Triple A companies try to appeal to won’t bother reading this comment.
This was a very well made video. Great job on the editing, use of background music, and well spoken script. I dont have anything to really criticise either than the intentional ramble in the middle of the video about you playing Destiny over the Witcher. I 100% agree with AAA game creativity being dead but creative games as a whole are fruitful in the indie and VR game scene. If you are fortunate enough to have a powerful enough PC or laptop to run VR games then you can open a massive library of games that are creative and engage you in new ways instead of using your thumbs on a controller or mouse and keyboard. A few friends of mine have been getting away from the inital VR experience/arcade games like Beat Saber and stepping into the world of co-op/MMO realm of virtual reality and it is absolutely amazing what developers are able to do with the new platform of VR. The only issue at this present moment in time which has been enabled by the Gaming industry as a whole is that both indie and VR games are generally Early Access titles that you can pay for in advance but have to wait until the product is done. Yes you do get to play the product but it is not indicative of the final result. I hope the majority of people soon burnout of the current gaming market so that publishers realise how boring their product is and have to put time and work back into their IPs but until that happens, we will see the same games being pumped out month after month from the big name companies.
I've had a lot of the same experience with being accused of being blinded by nostalgia for older titles when a lot of old game i've played i've never played before until recently. Its an automatic assumption that if you speak favorable of old games you must have played them when they first came out, but between graphical remakes that dont change anything but upgraded graphics (like the spyro trilogy) to just booting up or emulating older titles you can judge a game by its own merits instead of just going off one's personal memories.
I usually play a lot of indie games and trash talk a lot of AAA releases. A common snarky remark I see a lot is "Pretentious indie gamers when you tell them good AAA games exist like Fallout New Vegas, Half Life, and Super Mario World exists" and I just have to wonder why there just isn't any AAA game made in the last decade ever mentioned. Like they are still good games, but why isn't something like Halo Infinite held as an example if you're trying to prove that good AAA gaming exists now where I'm still getting new good indie titles. You know, unless just maybe there isn't that good of a AAA game released in the last long while.
I personally love the Witch Queen campaign, despite my frustration with legend difficulty (which I gave up on when I got to Savathûn's second phase). My favorite part was Ghost yelling at Savathûn about the various allies we've lost and that she dared suggest he join her. Lightfall was not as fun as Witch Queen, but that was mostly because of the characters not being very fun (aside from Sam, Caitl, and Calus). I wish I was able to experience Taken King the same way D1 veterans had, but I'm still glad I was able to experience it in any capacity.
Not only that but D1 still has all of their strikes available for anyone to play and crucible maps and modes if I'm not mistaken. They weren't sent to a vault for later re-use like what we're seeing with Destiny 2. Witch Queen had a fun campaign and fun exotics and strikes (when they aren't GMs) but by the end of it all I wanted more from the DLC but with their motto of not wanting overdo it with bringing content. That'll never happen and will always be a money game than a game meant for players.
Most people who accuse you of nostalgia believe in metaphysical progress and can't even imagine that things, from entertainment products to the culture we live in, can get worse over a long period of time and that upswing isn't a law of nature. So their attack with the accusation of nostalgia is first and foremost a defence of their beliefs against those who see things as they are.
the problem is some people actually are blinded by nostalgia. anyone who says the 90s as a time to live in were better than the 2010s is lying to themselves. We haven’t progressed much in the last 4 years, but we still have 6 more years to make this decade better.
I agree, it's a stupid argument, it's as though they think they know what's going on in your own head. There are plenty of old games that I really like that I have no nostalgia for at all, and there's been some which I do find nostalgic but I don't like anymore. Next time someone says you're blinded by nostalgia, just tell them you're blinded by newness, or you're blinded by 'omg teh fancy graffiks!', lol.😄
This is why I love your content so much man I literally agree with every. Single. Thing you say it’s honestly great to have someone with a platform legit voice the same opinion as me, and the witch queen part was ON damn point all it had was a good narrative and people will ride the high for ever.
THANK YOU! It’s hilarious that the same people who say HALO 3 is the best Halo (which I totally agree with btw and just using it as an example) say that because I like Destiny 1 better it’s cause nostalgia… definitely totally not because I actually liked it more than D2 at all… the blind hypocrisy is crazy.
I just want to say "gen z friendly dialog" is sort of a misfire because the dialog is definitely from millennials who pretend to know what gen z is like.

(seriously those games look fantastic)
*I must be blinded by nostalgia.*
@@Alexander-nc4vyDamn, now I want to be blinded by nostalgia.
@@schnek8927back then patching the game after launch was not a thing, so it had to be perfect from the get go
@morgan2338 there are free to use the extra processing power for things that are not graphics
It goes like this: You Pitch your Game -> they give you a Budget -> You develop the Game
TLDR; Big Game Devs nowadays have found a formula that works for Games and their Average Consumer, so they apply it as long as they can to min max earnings, developing Games is always a financial risk. (look at Volition, devs of Saints row, now closing)
@@yaboiyojimbo2025 graphics are the whole reason why this is such a huge financial risk
Many don't even get that 'eventual fix'
And before microtransactions were a possibility that base purchase was all you could hope to get, so no incentive to string players along.
Remember when loading screens were the biggest inconvenience keeping you from having fun?
@@NotRenjiro Yup, True Crime NYC is busted on Xbox, compared to Gamecube and PS2, all because one missing animation for a mission which results for it to never progress, the only thing folks do back then is to mess around with Debug mode because for some reason the devs forgot to remove it, perhaps they accidentally shipped development build lol

Exactly. 'Just nostalgia' might get you to dig out an old game, but it won't be enough to keep you playing it for hours and hours.
I think that a lot of them are kind of new to gaming, they weren't hardcore gamers for 10 years, they just started playing video games in their 20s because it become popular. They are not able to bear the older graphics and can not enjoy old games, because they don't understand that technological progress isn't everything. In the words of Kaiba : “Never settle for mediocrity”
thing is, that can be completely and utterly biased whether someone considers something mediocrity or not
I think part of why having such honest debates has become more difficult is due to more people being introduced to the Internet at a younger age.
100% true. Well said.
Nowadays, the so called triple A games tend to be like: "How can we shove an ingame shop to sell and promote dlcs first, fix broken game second"

You can still make money without all that predatory microtransaction stuff and make a good game, did you know that? Crazy right!?
It’s definitely not just nostalgia, it’s about the game mechanics, aesthetics, or story that people would prefer over the other.
It is nostalgia because people only talk about good old games.
@@thomasffrench3639 then they’re obviously wrong.
@@TheRecklessMetalheadFunny to mention halo 4 with the rest of those
If it really was just nostalgia, then we would’ve hated Red Dead Redemption 2, or Elden Ring, or Mario Wonder, or Spider-Man 2, or newer Christopher Nolan movies.
And I'm 1000% one of them.
ay man that takes some dignity to actually say that. props to u.
Great comment. So many are usually fully on their respective side, but it's really cool to see someone taking in an opinion. Enough to honestly say their original viewpoint, but not being afraid to show humility in admitting the other person has points.
DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE??!
Being nostalgic and recognizing that recent media doesn't match up to media released in the past are two different things.
When emotions go up, logic goes down.

A great way to look at Recency vs Nostalgia in video games is also to consider the music scene:
"Classics" which we all love listening to from previous decades were for the most part the Pop music of their generation.
Same with video games:
I still go back and play the games I grew up with; Sega Genesis games, Nintendo 64 games, original Command & Conquer etc.
Your just too logical man. I must subscribe
It's not nostalgia if I'm still playing it and finding the same if not more enjoyment from it.

Really appreciated reading this. Thank you
Sad to know your brother succumbed to addiction, it's awful to see family members go through that.
One question though, how is this youtuber supposed to be a male role model specifically? Asking cuz I agree with many things he said as I came to similar conclusions long before finding this video, while not being male
Video games are addictive
No more addictive than any other hobby. If a person is primed to succumb to addiction, it could be knitting, extreme sports or collecting things that they get addicted to. The hobby itself is not at fault for it. In direct contrast to substances that cause a demonstrable addiction/withdrawal.@@kiwikemist
I once said I thought the original Fallout was better than Fallout 4. I got called blinded by nostalgia. Fact is I only said it because I was playing it at the time, for the first time ever. Can't be nostalgic for something you've never played before...
That is factually correct
I agree.
I too started with Fallout 4, so I love it when people say I have nostalgia bias for New Vegas because their argument is entirely invalidated
A lot of the flaws of modern gaming are ALSO prevalent in movies these days. Media in general... I miss when games were made out of passion and artistry rather then to exclusively make money.
It's not nostalgia when it was actually better back then.

The silver lining to these mediocre games from AAA Studios is that indie developers finally get a chance in the spotlight
While nostalgia may be a factor as to why we love so many old products, people forget that it is, in fact, just that... a factor.
You cannot assign a cardinal value to the “goodness” of a game. There is no truly objective element.
Nostalgia is just a cope from people who can’t accept the fact that old games were just better

All games should be an endless grind that take 2000000 hours to finish

There's immaturity in both the old school side and modern side.
I love when people throw nostalgia at me when I say new games are worse than ever. Like yes, because I am definitely nostalgic about things I experienced in the absolute worst times of my life. The games are definitely only good because it brings my back to a time of extreme trauma.
If newer are so much worse, then why do they sell so much better?

I appreciate the sentiment but unfortunately I don’t think there’s any going back now.
😢
I feel like banking on nostalgia is such a hit or miss strategy
Bro I love your content you're always breaking the most annoying arguments! Great channel indeed.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Even bad games were still fun and playable in the early 2000s.
You hit the nail on the head with this one! Great vid :)
I just want to say "gen z friendly dialog" is sort of a misfire because the dialog is definitely from millennials who pretend to know what gen z is like.
