You actually just pissed me off again...lol. Who was the other person that Helen Hunt robbed that night? Why can't I remember? Going to Google it now!
When I was watching the rape scene when Ken is testifying I kept thinking "Ken you are so freaking awesome". Ken was the man. He stood up and told the truth. I wanted to hug that guy. It was extremely hard to watch. For some of it I was watching with my hands over my eyes through my fingers. I made myself watch it because rape is never ok and I wanted to understand the magnitude. It doesn't matter that she was drunk or high or whatever. That one defense attorney that was like "You didn't scream help or rape"...I wanted to be like "No means no jerk!" I read that Kelly McGillis was offered the role of Sarah but she turned it down because in 1982 she was raped so she auditioned for the role of Kathryn. Jodie's performance in that scene was the most disturbing and raw performance I have seen since Hillary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry".
@@hardsam68 True but it's the performance that is awarded here not the movie. It takes talent to transcend and rise above that mediocre film the way Jodie Foster did. Just like her and Anthony Hopkins made The Silence of the Lambs so much better than the standard thriller with their acting.

Everything in that performance is ferocious, even when contained, I would say better when contained. And you have to remember that the las 2 minutes of the movie belong to her. And then Meryl in her Cannes Win Role that shows she doesn't want to be loved, she wants to do the best roles in the planet, and she does. With an Australian accent, and a unique performance, she shows us what it is to be the best. Melanie went outside her comfort zone with Working Girl, giving heart and soul to many of her previous and future sweet and sexy characters. But then Jodie Foster left them all sitting there, as she not only goes through the trauma of multiple rape, but also confronting social stereotypes. Jodie had always given us spectacular performances in Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone and many more. She is incapable of being excellent. She can be romantic, commanding, a bad ass or a rookie and she will make you feel exactly what it is that is going through her mind and soul. No matter how many Oscars they've won or lost, they have already left their imprint in the art of performance.
Agree with you Alex. Turner's monologue at the beginning of The Accidental Tourist is mesmerizing. Actually I believe there was a controversy with Gina Davis' nomination for The Accidental Tourist. She should've been placed in the Best Actress category. It was a bit of hogwash that the studio advertised both her and Turner for the best supporting actress category. Gene Siskel pointed this out during his Oscar surprises of 1989 broadcast. You can find it here on youtube. I believe he referred to it as category fraud and argued that both Klein and Davis were not true supporting roles, hinting he wanted Turner to have the Supporting Nomination. He was always a huge fan of Kathleen's and even expressed bitter disappointment when she wasn't nominated for Best Actress for War of the Roses the following year.
I think I was traumatised for about two weeks after watching The Accused, the strength and audacity of miss foster is very well highlighted in this film. A national treasure who deserves every great thing in this world, I wish she acts more often now coz she certainly deserves a 3rd Oscar

Sigourney Weaver joined a very short list of actors that year for garnering two nominations in the same year, one for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting for Working Girl. She really should have won a couple of years earlier for ALIENS but the Academy rarely recognizes science fiction or horror, so it was a big deal for her to even get the nomination. Her performance as Ripley was so strong and so groundbreaking for a woman in an action role, they simply couldn’t ignore her.

I can't say that Foster's Oscar was "undeserved" as she was brilliant in The Accused and so was Sigourney Weaver, but in my opinion Glenn Close was simply perfect and I'd have liked to see her win for Dangerous Liaisons. Jodie Foster was amazing, though.
I think jodie foster did an amzing job in the accused. That rape scene still makes me hold my breath and hold back tears..but glenn close in liasons was perfect. Those costumes alone would be hard to work in and her chemistry with malkovich is unmatched. Glenn close is not the first woman to come to mind when i hear the word sexy or charismatic but she acted so well in the movie that i believed she was both. Malkovich also had me fooled that he was a Casanova.
At the 25, the way she handled the complexity of the character was astonishing. I really thank Jodie for deciding to continue acting and not quitting it or else we would had been deprived of an extraordinary talent
Three of my favorite actresses were nominated- Streep, Close , Foster. But I would say that Foster s performance had totally deserved the Award due to the complexity of the dramatic role.
With all due respect to Jodie Foster, this should've been Glenn Close's Oscar. She was phenomenal in Dangerous Liaisons - and besides, Jodie won for Silence of the Lambs a few years later.
Jodie Foster is an actor of exceptional talent, depth and beauty who was always ahead of her peers, by the time actors of her age were in their diapers she was making commercials, by the time they learned to speak, she was making movies for Disney, by the time they starting going to the school, she was winning awards and getting nominated for the Oscars, by the time they decided to enter films, Jodie decided to leave it behind and enjoy the ivy league world which she graduated with magna cum laude, by the time her peers had their breakthrough she already had won two Oscars and transitioned to the director's chair. An extraordinary talent, who's contribution to cinema is unparalleled and exquisite. A sheer gift to the world of acting and filmmaking
Glenn Close in DL was perfection. The Academy loves victims and heroines but they would never reward an actress playing a cold, vindictive villainess no matter how exceptional the performance was.
Charlize played a real life serial killer and Kathy played a psychotic nurse. Glenn played an elegant aristocratic who manipulated and deceived for her own amusement- she was a villainess who got her comeuppance- there’s a difference between this and the other two performances.
Glenn Close 0 oscar why? She is one of the Best actress of the world. Just the Last scene of dangeroux liaison was a Oscar triumph. Politics vote Just this one
It's amazing how Jodie Foster has crafted a legacy where it's only her work that matters and not her personal life (though people have been prying on her sexuality for years, before she finally acknowledged it publicly). For someone who has been working in the film business since age 3 and has been a global movie star ever since her breakthrough year of 1976 at age 13, it's remarkable how well she transitioned to mature leading roles with her sanity & integrity intact. Not to mention between all the mayhem of stardom, she managed to graduate a rigorous french language prep school as a valedictorian, had a near perfect SAT score, graduated from Yale magna cum laude in comparative literature. Jodie Foster in every sense is exceptional & remarkable, someone who would be a better suit from a career in academics but somehow ended up being in the showbiz, since she had no choice & this remarkable intellect of her's is what distinguishes her from all of her peers or literally everybody in the film industry. A once in a generation talent.
And to think that Jodie was close to retiring from acting before she got the role (she had tried to restart her career after graduating college, but the projects she was getting were not good & was thinking it might be time to find another career).
Sigourney Weaver looks like disapointed, she had a row of incredible performances since Aliens, and nomination after nomination they did not give her an Oscar. She will remain as one of my TOP favorite actresses.
That year, Sigourney was a double loser bc she was nominated for lead and supporting roles and this was loss #2 of the evening...so her disappointment is totally understandable
I wish she would win too! She is an outstanding actress. She had some other hits I thought were Oscar worthy like Imaginary Heroes and Copycat. She needs to win!
Yup very well deserved. I recall being a child and thinking what the hell did i just watch. It def bothered me watching that movie. Very well acted by jodie. Was good to know the history behind the movie as i got older.
The Accused is an amazing, powerful drama with one of the greatest female performances in the history of cinema. Foster has never even had an acting lesson, she's just so natural and humanistic in this role, she excels at playing the role of the strong-minded yet physically vulnerable young woman with a raw intensity. Every scene she's in exudes realism, hope and courage which most deservedly won her the Oscar that year, nobody else came close, they weren't as fearless or truthful to their roles
Glenn Close deserved this Oscar, her performance in Dangerous Liaisons was one of the best I've ever seen in my life...Glenn you are the real winner|||
Have u seen The Accused? it's was amazing from Jodie's performance the thing is many actress turn down to play Sarah but Jodie can and also well too. Jodie deserve it
What a great year for women in movies that year! Pretty much any of them could have one and it would have been deserved! All those movies and performances were amazing! Meryl Streep probably gave, as usual, the most complex performance because of the person she was playing was pretty complex in general, but Foster was crazy good in a movie that was just hard to watch.
i totally agree with you...and FOsters role was a sensationalist one, very well played BUT not Oscar worthy...I also recall that year Dangerous Liasons came out very late for Oscar season and Ive alwyas thought this was the reason CLose didnt get the votes .....but those last THREE scenes are Oscar worthy, she should really have won....The Accused is a forgotten movie
Foster gave a powerhouse performance and so did Close but Foster clearly had the most difficult role for any thespian to play and moreover close was surprisingly shunned by every award organisation that year not one critic nominated her neither did the golden globes, only nominations she received were for the Oscars and BAFTA (which was in 90)
If Sigourney Weaver was nominated for "Gorillas in the Mist" another year, she would've absolutely derserved to win! But Jodie Foster gave the performance of her life in "The Accused"! A well deserved Oscar win!
As much as I like Jodie Foster's ground-breaking performance in The Accused, Glenn Close deserved this Oscar as she did for Fatal Attraction last year. Nobody could pull off a devious and cold performance like that. Not even Meryl Streep.
Yes, I agree. Why another actresses won her Oscar the next year she deserved it like Cher or Goopie Goldberg? Glenn Close deserved it more than Jodie because in ten years she got 5 nominations without a win.
The Accused is one of the most harrowing films ever and not just bcoz of the rape scene but the whole tone of the film makes you uncomfortable, Jodie delivered a yet another remarkable performance and proved her bravura as an actor and showed with this performance how bold and brave she is as a woman and as an actor, kudos 👍👍👍👍
from what i've read...one of the actors in the rape scene was sitting down, and broke down in tears after it was filmed, and jodie foster actually went over to him to comfort him
OMG! Glenn’s performance was just amazing. It’s one of the best performances ever. I can’t believe that she wasn’t able to win, but I have to admit that Jodie deserved too but... God! Glen is just amazing.
You are right. People still talk about Glenn Close's performance in Dangerous Liaisons. And, she deserved it for Fatal Attraction ( Holly Hunter being a close second for Broadcast News).
Jodie is so beautiful and charming. If she was nominated in the same year for the Accused and Silence of the Lambs, I would give her the Oscar for Accused. But, that´s just my opinion.
Jodie Foster is great and all, but seriously Glenn Close should've swept everything that year. She was a beast in Dangerous Liaisons. Fatal Attraction is pretty close, but Dangerous Liaisons is definitely her best work. Throughout the film, her eyes reveal the underlying turmoil behind her calm and collected facade, the desire, the anger, everything is in their spark, until finally she reaches her breaking point. The ending of the film is completely hers, and as far as I'm concerned, that Oscar was hers all the way. Sigourney was typically great, Meryl was impressive, I'm sure (though I haven't watched her film), Melanie was pitch perfect and Foster delivered a devastating performance, but Close wins this. The only other real competitor was Carmen Maura for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and she unfortunately was not nominated.
My order: 1) G.Close and S.Weaver (same excellent level) 2) Foster...(amazing) 3) Streep...(brilliant) 4) Griffith...(very good) Glenn (or Sigouney) deserved to win.......but it's absurd to say Foster is undeserving for "The accused" because her performance was incredible...and she is one of the most talented woman in Hollywood.
DANGEROUS LIAISONS was released only in December 1988. Many journalists and actors didn't watch in time to vote for it (including the Hollywood Foreign Press Association).
I totaly forgot what a great movie year that was. Have seen al those movies. And most of them are hard to watch. It must have been a very difficult choice
I didn't say that she was mediocre. She's one of the best actresses of our time and in this particular movie, there are scenes where she's great (like this one you just described), but comparing with Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons for example, she didn't deserve it.
It's almost impossible to watch The Accused and surprisingly received only one nomination, but certainly the impact was so high you couldn't help but root for Jodie to win, it's an unbelievably courageous and devasting performance with an immense range
yes but in that particular year she wasnt a strong contender, so get off your Meryl high horse (btw shouldnt have been nominated this year at all for The Post)
God. The competition here! These nominees were THE Goddesses of the time - every one of them phenomenally talented and accomplished actresses. But, Jodie absolutely deserved this! What a performance! Anyone who has not seen THE ACCUSED needs to set aside and evening to sit back and observe the amazing, incomparable talents of Miss Jodie Foster! BRAVO!!
I actually thought she was pretty impressive in La La Land. That audition scene, an all timer. Though I'm not sure she should've won the Oscar, she wasn't exactly undeserving. However, 1988 was indeed a great year acting wise.
Wow what a year for movies. My girl pulled it off though! Well deserved. Jodie did an outstanding job on such a tough subject and came out a winner. The best!
i dont think who gets the Osacr is neccesasrily the 'winner' , I think the nomination is what counts most and I think you'll find 99 percent of them agree
Even if I actually consider G.Close and S.Weaver superior in their performances, I don't think that Foster's Oscar is undeserved...because her performance in "The accused" is effective, potent and upsetting. Clearly this isn't an undeserving win.
She's Jodie bloody Foster one of all-time greats and 31 years later The Accused upsets people while people don't even remember gorillas and dangerous liasons that vividly

Cruelty might me very human, it might be very cultural, but It's not acceptable 💪💪 quote for the life
It is certainly acceptable to the U S "justice" system and the sons of bitches could care less about children.
Without cruelty the us would not excist
@@timowthieAs an American, watching the genocide in Palestine...i absolutely agree with you. Wouldn't have agreed 5 years ago.
At the 25, the way she handled the complexity of the character was astonishing. I really thank Jodie for deciding to continue acting and not quitting it or else we would had been deprived of an extraordinary talent
25 is not a child, it is a very grown woman with complex emotions and character.
Great actress for a film with so much meaning well deserved.
I cant believe now that Jennifer Lawrence won an Oscar and have 3 nominations as you can see those years The 5 nominees could win.
Alexis Gonzáles that imbecile .. never watched and never watch her movies
Now, they are just giving Oscars away.
@@andresuston7692 she won around the time the pics leaked I think. . . For silver Linings Playbook. . . was that as consolation?
@@randomhuman97 👍
What a stupid your comment
Three of my favorite actresses were nominated- Streep, Close , Foster. But I would say that Foster s performance had totally deserved the Award due to the complexity of the dramatic role.
CLose totally held that movie, I would say it was very 'CLOSE'?
Close was robbed
Hoffman, Foster, Cruise.
Sigourney Weaver looks so beautiful!
My goodness yes. A Queen!!♥️🤩🙌🏼💯
With all due respect to Jodie Foster, this should've been Glenn Close's Oscar. She was phenomenal in Dangerous Liaisons - and besides, Jodie won for Silence of the Lambs a few years later.
I think Glenn was better in Fatal Attraction than Dangerous Liasons.
After seeing her performance in The Accused, and it really was a great film, I couldn't help but agree with her winning of this Oscar that year.
U should watch Dangerous Liaisons
@@omkarpeace_Devotionalyou should watch The Accused. Jodie deserved it more.
Charlize Theron in monster (2003)?
Kathy Bates in Misery
Charlize played a real life serial killer and Kathy played a psychotic nurse. Glenn played an elegant aristocratic who manipulated and deceived for her own amusement- she was a villainess who got her comeuppance- there’s a difference between this and the other two performances.
Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over .......
Faye Dunaway in Network...
The Accused is the most traumatic film experience I ever had and Jodie is the strongest and bravest actor out there 👏
Glenn Close 0 oscar why? She is one of the Best actress of the world. Just the Last scene of dangeroux liaison was a Oscar triumph. Politics vote Just this one
That last seen is acting at its best!!! I've seen so many movies and nothing topped that!!
it s true , and Sigourney Weaver to.
She was truly mesmerising
she was mind blowing in every scene, I realy think that her performance in DL is better than hers in Fatal Attraction
What a wonderful woman; she is talented, articulate, lovable, humble and real. She states that she leads a simple life, so enduring.
Jodie Foster , Glen Close , Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver give amazing performances with a difficult choice in the awards
I also loved Melanie's performance tho..
Jodie shot the film when she was 24, that courage and strength at that darn age. Hats off
And to think that Jodie was close to retiring from acting before she got the role (she had tried to restart her career after graduating college, but the projects she was getting were not good & was thinking it might be time to find another career).
Sigourney Weaver looks like disapointed, she had a row of incredible performances since Aliens, and nomination after nomination they did not give her an Oscar. She will remain as one of my TOP favorite actresses.
That year, Sigourney was a double loser bc she was nominated for lead and supporting roles and this was loss #2 of the evening...so her disappointment is totally understandable
cazia9 I hope someone writes a good role for her and she finally wins!
I wish she would win too! She is an outstanding actress. She had some other hits I thought were Oscar worthy like Imaginary Heroes and Copycat. She needs to win!
@@MrMarkmurray0712 Don't forget her role in The Ice Storm. She won the Bafta for this but she didn't get the Oscar nomination.
@@MrMarkmurray0712 She should have been nominated for "Death and the Maiden" and "Snowcake" too.
Yup very well deserved. I recall being a child and thinking what the hell did i just watch. It def bothered me watching that movie. Very well acted by jodie. Was good to know the history behind the movie as i got older.
And she’s still so young. Wish she was in more.
Foster was nowhere near Glenn Close
Back when Melanie Griffith looked like a person.
My thoughts exactly.
Fabisch Factor So it's all because of plastic surgeries or someting??
She looks horrible now and her face is all ugly! She looked a lot better in her younger years. Pacific Heights, Working Girl, are my favorite movies.
YOUR A NASTY PIECE OF WORK EH?
Tough year! To me, it was between Streep, Close, and Foster. The final scene of Dangerous Liaisons, alone, is worth an Oscar for Close.
i totally agree with you...and FOsters role was a sensationalist one, very well played BUT not Oscar worthy...I also recall that year Dangerous Liasons came out very late for Oscar season and Ive alwyas thought this was the reason CLose didnt get the votes .....but those last THREE scenes are Oscar worthy, she should really have won....The Accused is a forgotten movie
Foster gave a powerhouse performance and so did Close but Foster clearly had the most difficult role for any thespian to play and moreover close was surprisingly shunned by every award organisation that year not one critic nominated her neither did the golden globes, only nominations she received were for the Oscars and BAFTA (which was in 90)
@@siddharthnaagar7028 Dangerous Liaisons was released only in December 88. Many journalists and actors didn't watch in time to vote for it.
This is one hell of a line up, I mean when do we get to see three of the greatest actresses of all-time compete together in the same category
0:43 aw Sigourney’s so embarrassed and cute here
One of the strongest group in Oscar history
The leading's role category in 1996 was stronger
Great speech.
No, she didn't. She deserved an Oscar for Fatal attraction but not for Dangerous Liaisons. Cher won for moonstruck that year.
@@efraimalexander5378 I say that she deserved to win for both movies
Sigourney Weaver is one of the greatest actresses of the last four decades, and one of the most underrated. He should have won the Oscar that year.
I love how different and unique her speeches are, always different from the traditional thank yous
Jodie Foster was great, but that should've been Glenn Close's Oscar. Her performance was on another level.
Yes, I agree. Why another actresses won her Oscar the next year she deserved it like Cher or Goopie Goldberg? Glenn Close deserved it more than Jodie because in ten years she got 5 nominations without a win.
Disagree. Jodie had to do far more grueling and intense work.
Jodie, you deserved that Oscar! THE ACCUSED, you are superb in! Just great!
Let alone at 24 years of age, that courage and audacity 💪
from what i've read...one of the actors in the rape scene was sitting down, and broke down in tears after it was filmed, and jodie foster actually went over to him to comfort him
That was Sigourney's year. she didn't win an oscar that year, but she was nominated for Supporting Actress and also best actress.
She is so beautiful
She seems so honest. It's admirable.
Glenn Close deserved this more than the other nominees!
Every nominated actress that year should've won for their acting. They all were amazing.
Difficult choice between Jodie Foster , Glenn Close , Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver
My order:
1) G.Close and S.Weaver (same excellent level)
2) Foster...(amazing)
3) Streep...(brilliant)
4) Griffith...(very good)
Glenn (or Sigouney) deserved to win.......but it's absurd to say Foster is undeserving for "The accused" because her performance was incredible...and she is one of the most talented woman in Hollywood.
4 tied
How Meryl Streep was beautiful...
I wish Tom and Jodie would have done a movie together in the 90's. They're amazing.
No way!!!Glenn deserved 2 Oscars for "Dangerous Liaisons"!!!
DANGEROUS LIAISONS was released only in December 1988. Many journalists and actors didn't watch in time to vote for it (including the Hollywood Foreign Press Association).
Jodie Foster, vencedora de 2 oscars, não sabia :O
Just watched this tonight. Unbelievable story and so well acted by Jodie.
What remarkable human being
Never heard such beautiful and husky alto
I totaly forgot what a great movie year that was. Have seen al those movies. And most of them are hard to watch.
It must have been a very difficult choice
+Colinda Teeuwisse indeed!
Jodie vs Meryl? Tough call.
Meryl was never a serious contender that year. It should have been Glenn.
+Ren G Not even... Meryl is in a class all her own.
+Ren G I LOVE Jodie as an actress but there's Meryl, then there's everyone else.
Paesito Paez And nobody cares about Melanie Griffith
yes but in that particular year she wasnt a strong contender, so get off your Meryl high horse (btw shouldnt have been nominated this year at all for The Post)
I do like Foster and the other actress but Glenn Close should have won. Period.
I always love her confidence, extremely motivational
Meryl Streep was really great in A CRY IN THE DARK. I wish she had taken home an Oscar for that film [instead of Kramer vs. Kramer or The Iron Lady].
yes The Iron Lady is a shit movie
BRAVO!!
This quality of acting in 1989! Forward to 2017 and you have Emma stone ?
milton78 Emma Stone was great lol 😂
Couldn't agree more
Emma Stone is a great actress..La La Land maybe wasn't her strongest role but she's been good in everything else.
Just decadence
I actually thought she was pretty impressive in La La Land. That audition scene, an all timer. Though I'm not sure she should've won the Oscar, she wasn't exactly undeserving. However, 1988 was indeed a great year acting wise.
1:24 damn that is the sweetest laugh
I love who she laughs both times before accepting the award and slays with an elegant speech
She won Best Actress again in 1991 for The Silence of the Lambs, another remarkable performance.
Her words are so articulate; makes sense to thank her education. She is wise and kind. What a gem.
glenn close was definitely ROBBED of this one!!! i guess the academy is waiting til she hits jessica tandys age for GODSSAKE!!!
Dude, have you _Seen_ Jodie Foster's performance? It was electrifying!
Can you remember how stunning Tom cruise was!
