I meant to mention this is the video, but a great UA-cam channel for beginner tips is MangoSirene's channel! She has a whole video series dedicated to going more in-depth in explaining various cosplay-related skills and her videos are beautifully made, so I highly recommend checking her out! 💖
AnyaPanda can you do cosplay DIYs like Pearl's spear from Steven Universe? A lot of us have problems with putting together props. also, coincidentally, my best friend was already going to do Mabel Pines as her first cosplay... after a failed attempt at Hatsune Miku.
2- bit Cosplay Thanks for the reminder. I always felt a bit down that I always bought my cosplays because I thought someone would shame me for it. (P.S.I'm 12 and I suck at sewing.) So seeing this made my day.☺️ (Fun Fact: I always have been good at wig styling)
Yes!! I have always bought my cosplays and it doesn't make you any less of a cosplayer! Every once in a while I feel down about not making cosplays but I'm really bad at crafts cause I over think everything and I can't sew! Just make sure you give credit where credit is due when buying cosplays ^^
My cosplay is good for almost all year unless its super cold cuz his outfit (evil version) is changeable from short to long and I pretty sure it will be hot out so my Fav version of his (evil) outfit
I'm still kind of a beginner, but I do have a few tips that I've gathered. 1: if the character you want to cosplay wears heals, I suggest bringing a pair of flats to wear when you aren't doing photo shoots. Wearing heals for long periods of time isn't comfortable, so having a pair of flats will help. 2: Be careful with props. Make sure you have an eye on them at all times, just in case. You don't want to accidentally leave it somewhere. 3: it is 100% ok if you bought your cosplay. No matter what anyone says, bought cosplays are still cosplays. 4: little details are always fun. Like, if your character wears a mask, put makeup on still so that when you take the mask off you still look like the character. Or painting your nails even if that character wears gloves. Small details like those are always a fun add on.
#1 Oh my god this. The first time I wore my Sally cosplay out I walked around for 4 hours straight in ankle boots with pencil thin heels and no back ups. By the end of the night I was f e e l i n g the pain with each step, like my feet were throwing a revolt for what I put them through lol! Never again
Another quick tip, You DON'T have to have the outfit to cosplay the character, you can get something similar to something the character might wear and it doesn't have to be exact.
GingerExpress Ty, that was something that I was just thinking about and rn I’m only mapping out my first cosplay (as in like buying clothing specifically for a character and not just doing a closet cosplay) and I don’t want to jump straight to designing my own clothes just yet and... well, idk But thank you for saying this!!
You must love all K A N G A R O O S Hey! If you don’t like having closet cosplays and like having outfits similar to the characters outfit, if you use eBay or aliexpress you can find diffrent articles of the outfit and buy them separately FOR MUCH cheeper then a full cosplay.
my beginner tip is to always carry a deck of cards in your con bag! you can find yourself waiting in long lines or with lots of downtime between panels and it’s a great way to make friends
@@gabs3901 if it's expensive make sure it's well protected and hidden, went to my first comicon and got robbed of my switch, thank God it's insured but definitely be careful about what you bring and what you bring it in!
"Prepare your cosplay for a while" My dad asked me yesterday "hey there's a comic con near here this weekend want to go?" I only have around 24 more hours to finish my first real cosplay and so far I only have the wig (if it is even coming in tomorrow... ) Im gonna go to the thrift store to buy some of the clothes for her a free school tomorrow and I hope it all comes together well!!
Other tips from a noob (me lol) Buying your cosplay is fine Using your own hair is alright Is your cosplay not 100% accurate? That's okay! Are you unsure of cosplaying a character because you are a different race, gender or have a different body type? It doesn't matter! It's about having fun Doing AUs and OCs are okay hAvE fUn
this helped too much; I’m scared because I need to buy my cosplay I’m not using my own hair but yeah I’m scared it’s gonna be innacurate I’m a female and my character is Male, although I look like a boy it’s gonna look odd. I’ve done an oc before, I’ve never cosplayed an AU but I might I’m going trick or treating in it so I think I’ll have fun 😂
You forgot to mention one very important thing with cosplay..... BOBBY PINS! ALWAYS HAVE THEM! YOU DO NOT WANT ANY OF YOUR HAIR SHOWING AT ALL UNDER THAT WIG. Bobby pin/hair pin everything! Your own hair, the wig cap, the wig itself, accessories, ALL OF IT. Okay that's all 8DD
So maybe next year im gonna cosplay as kaede akamatsu from danganronpa v3 and i will need bobby pins not just for the wig, for the hairclips too. bobby pins are gonna save me
Not just bobby pins but an "emergency fix kit" with stuff like safety pins, tape, maybe a small sewing kit, etc. You never know what's going to happen and you never know when you might need to fix your cosplay a little
I would. Wigs can be itchy sometimes if you don't wear a wig cap. Wig caps also help keep the wigs a little bit cleaner (you should still wash the wigs once in a while anyway though).
Drag your friends into it, that's a tip I really enjoy!!! Group cosplays are 10000000% better than solo costumes!!! I've already been in one group and currently making my costume for my next and then have another one lined up!! This is all with two of my friends!! Grab your nerd friends and find a fandom you both like! Don't be afraid to do au's or different versions!
My friends and I are going to a con has Lucy, Levy and Virgo from fairy tail. We have never done a group cosplay before but I can already tell it's going to be more fun than doing a cosplay by myself.
My #1 cosplay tip is FIND OUT YOUR UNDERTONE. Google can help you, look at your veins, do the silver/gold test. Just figure it out before you buy a wig! You want an accurate cosplay that looks good on YOU. If you have a cool undertone, you will look horrible in a honey blonde wig. You need an ash blonde or platinum wig. Similarly, if you have a warm undertone, that purple wig needs to lean a tad more toward the red end of the spectrum- never ashy. I have wasted way too much money on wigs that wash me out completely or make my face look permanently red. If you familiarize yourself with skintone basics and learn to coordinate warm, cool, and neutral tones, you will have far fewer unusable wigs. Additionally, I disagree with the "don't go alone" advice here. So long as you have a good hotel room, don't leave the convention center with any strangers, and stay sober (aka, basic safety) Going to cons alone can still be fun. No, it isn't as fun as going in a group, but I personally have found it to be relaxing. You can cosplay and pretend to be someone else without anyone judging you. No arguments over which panel to go to, no one angry if you sleep in and miss half of Saturday's events. If it all gets too much you can head back to the hotel room without issue or disappointment. If you wander around feeling sad that you're alone, it will suck. But if you seek events to participate in or watch, and go to places that you enjoy, it can be a good, fun mini-vacation for the overtired mind. You just have to be comfortable enough in your own company to not be miserable. Some people can't do that, but for those who can, I actually recommend going solo once!
I never knew that my undertones with certain color shades could make me washed out so thank you so so much for that tip! I also have some questions for you so I am cosplaying as Ghirahim from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword I will not be in my natural skin color since I have to paint my face neck arms and a lot of other parts of my body a light grey mixed with a lime green! Also his hair color is pure white so would I still have to try to match the wig with the undertones rule that you just mentioned even though I will be in face & body paint for the cosplay?
I'm by no means an expert cosplayer, however, I do have some advice for beginners (and all cosplayers in general): don't let other people's opinions rule over what you cosplay. Unfortunately there are people in the community who are jerks and think that only people of a certain build/gender/race can do a specific cosplay; but they're wrong. Cosplay is about having fun, and if you want to be a certain character, then you should! Most of us will think you're super awesome (because you are).
Meaghan OwlCloud I agree. Though, when you are starting out, you likely do not have the skills to do thing like body paint or fake boobs, so I would recommend choosing characters that are similar in build and skin color for the first couple of cosplays. Just so you have more time to focus on the actual costume, rather than worrying about any sort of prosthetics or body paints. Just a personal tip I have that has worked well again and again
when i cosplayed levi from aot at a con, someone came up to me and told me: you're the best levi here but you are a girl so you're not i was really offended and mad and let him alone xO so if anyone says shit about you and your cosplay, don't let it pull you down and simply ignore them -w-
Meaghan Priestley I have a question; I would LOVE to cosplay Clementine from the walking dead games. With a tan I can match her skin color, but I'm still worried about people being mad because I'm not mixed race. Should I still do it? I wouldn't actually have to paint my face or anything like that so I think it should be fine???
Yeah in Malaysia most cosplayers are fair white and most skinny are Chinese cosplayers but there are chubby too, but still fair skin.. so community people always judgemental about Malay n Indian, bcz we got dark and tan skin but still became a cosplayers..so sad because their critics mostly really broken our hearts. The most hurt critics is from the same tan races but they wearing armour suits.so they mocking the newbie and the unaffordable financial new cosplayers..😢
That was my first cosplay. My rpg group didn't larp or dress up but I was sorting all my things and came across a wig from a couple of Halloween ago that matched a new character I was playing. Popped into some thrift shops and some clothes I already had and Tilly Wilde entered the real world.
Before when I was a noob I had my mom sew my cosplay. One day she said "no". So I became an INDEPENDENT HUMAN BEING. I ended up with poking my finger 27 times 😁
oof relatable! I once poked a sewing needle right into my finger and didn't even notice because my fingers are dead from doing the same thing tons of times
WEIRD i only know how to hand sew and the last time i tried to create a cosplay with my mom and then she didn't let me help. for a cosplay that i'm still working on for a con that's in like a week and i'm not done with the shirt because i have to remove the sleeves from one of the two shirts and then dye the other shirt yellow and then i have to cut of those sleeves and then put them on the other shirts AND I DONT KNOW HOW TO DYE CLOTHES AND I DONT EVEN HAVE THE DYE YET. It would have been easier if i knew how to sew. but i don't. if i knew how to sew just a simple sweatshirt it would be easier. Probably
My tip would be to consider the shoes your character is wearing! I personally can't go to a con in heals. Therefore I would have to modify the shoes or pick a different character. It's definitely something to consider, especially since you're doing a lot of walking.
I made this mistake my first con. I learned the best thing to do is if you're planning on wearing heels, try to start wearing them (heels in general, not your cosplay heels) well in advance if you can, so your feet get used to them.
Megan Pinkerton Yes!! I totally agree, always prioritize the comfort of your shoes over how accurate they are, bloody feet are not fun at the end of a con day haha. 'OTL
YES! personally, I have dodgy knees and ankles from dance injuries and the right shoes are essential. I've used my work shoes ($100 non-slip 'kitchen shoes', not recommended for budget cosplay, I had them because I need them at work) for a harry potter cosplay. with the wrong shoes, I'm not going to be able to walk within 2 hours.
Maybe in case high heels become uncomfortable you could bring a change of more comfortable shoes to wear but maybe form a plan of how those shoes would still work with your character if you still want to be close to accuracy. If high heels are too much of a hassle but you still want to cosplay that character you could change the outfit the character wears, maybe what the character would dress like in more casual wear for example.
Make-up isn't always necessary. As someone with a lot of allergies and sensitivities, I still haven't found a make-up brand that doesn't make me break out in hives, and I've been cosplaying for almost 8 years now! Make-up does help with the overall look and accuracy of your cosplay, but if you can't wear it comfortably, then don't. I also can't wear contacts because of a lot of issues with my eyes, so I tend to cosplay more characters with grey-blue-purple eye color, or just edit my eye color in photos.
Sora Trancy honestly you don't even need to have matching eyes if you can't/ don't want to wear contacts. You can't really tell what color a person's eyes are from across a room so it doesn't really matter that much when other people are taking pictures.
I definitely agree makeup is not a necessity to a cosplay and neither are lenses or wigs. For me personally I am afraid of putting lenses in my eyes so I just cosplay characters with my same natural eye color! However I do agree with Divine Dragons even if your natural eye color does not match the character's it doesn't really matter. The only reason I do try to cosplay characters with my natural eye color is because I want to look as much like the character as I possibly can (even though the eye color won't make too much of a difference). For my very first cosplay as Yuki from Vampire Knight I wore no makeup, no lenses, no wig (I didn't like the idea of putting makeup on as a 12 year old) and I still resembled the character very well since we had the same hair color, style, length, and natural eye color and the costume my mother had purchased online for me (it was fitted to my body measurements) looked pretty friggin accurate! And plus you won't have to spend as much money for your entire cosplay if you don't run out and buy makeup for it!=) Now that I am 21 with A LOT more experience with makeup (and I actually like makeup now haha) I plan on doing face and body paint (not full body paint it's only certain sections that are painted) for my second cosplay (aiming for next year) as Ghirahim from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword!
My eyes are also really sensitive so I won't dare ever try contacts (plus my eye doctor told me they actually aren't that healthy for your eyes) but I'm also way too blind to eye makeup nor do I even know how to. I have a giant bag full of lipsticks/glosses and thats it when it comes to makeup and I just deal with both what Im comfortable with, and also the fact that even if its not canon or accurate, every character I cosplay is now too blind to not wear glasses for the day! Going back to a more serious note, I've done D.Va from Overwatch twice, the first time I drew her cheek stripes on with Sharpie (I was young and thought I would be able to wipe it off since I had tested it out before and it came off cleanly but a few minutes of wear does NOT compare to an entire day) and the second time I had completely blanked on the fact that she even has those on here cheeks so I was completely bare face and both times nobody really even cared, people still asked to take pictures with me, even this one girl who was in a way higher quality Mercy cosplay took one with me the time when I didn't have anything on my face. Unless I find some miracle way to both learn how makeup works and learn how to apply it to my eyes with my glasses on I'm probably just going to stick to lips... And nails because I want to become a licensed nail tech so I will try anything on myself any chance I get
“Don’t do a full suit of armor your first time” ah yes that makes sense, i suppose I’ll just cosplay Elizabeth from SDS :) ...whEN SHE FIRST WALKS IN THE BAR WITH A FULL SUIT OF ARMOR-
A tip from me is if you are planning to do a cosplay, start looking for things wayyyy in advance. That way you have time to use coupons as they come in, you can check second hand stores as new products come in, and you have time for ebay items. Also, when selecting a character consider what you have in your closet! I just did a 707 cosplay from MysticMessenger and I used a sweatshirt I already owned for the base of his jacket. Get creative and have fun with it!
Ok, I'm just going to say my experiences with cosplay so far... I'm only 12, so I don't have many skills that I can apply to creating cosplays. Neither do I have much money to buy materials and/or wigs with. I starting messing around with some cosplays at the start of the year, and have been to 2 conventions already with some friends. I made the cosplays for my friends, and while they weren't the best, seeing as I'm only a beginner, we had fun none the less. I soon started comparing myself to others, but I managed to convince myself that I was good at cosplay for my age. In school I recently starting doing fashion, and have surprisingly been doing good at it, so I'm going to continue next year and onwards. I really think things are looking up for me and I wanted to say thank you, your channel is so inspiring and I learn so much from it as I go.
Your first cosplay won't be perfect. You can't force perfection into a novice, so of course you get better at cosplay by practicing. Other people at cons will be just as scared as you are, no matter how experienced. "Is my wig going to hold?" "Is my makeup blotchy?" "Did I forget my badge in the hotel?" It's best to try and enjoy yourself while you're there.
Oof my first cosplay was deku and I got makeup literally the day after, so I didn't start with it but I also had terrible lighting... but uh listen never uses to much blush and start your eyeliner liner before wing
Show your parents the show/ game of the character your cosplaying as! I was cosplaying Deku from BNHA and my parents thought it was weird, But after I showed them the movie version of it (that came out at the perfect time) they loved it and still talk about the movie even when I’m not talking about it! My dad even bought Merch after that!
Tell them that it's a hobby. Everyone has one and for some people, it's a job. I have friends who get paid to cosplay. It's for the fun of it. To get out there and meet people who are into the same things we are into.
I explained to my mom how I it's just like halloween, or dress up. But for adults(or teens or whatever) personally I always dressed in Disney princess dresses and now I'm 17 and i still "dress up" tho I'm pretty strange anyway so to my family they weren't surprised
Don't be afraid to improvise if necessary, especially if you're having to do something last minute or are on a smaller budget. I know I've had to do this often. Also don't be afraid to cosplay your own fan characters if you want to, or canon characters, whether it's the canon versions of them or AU versions. I've also done this, and had a blast. Even a few of the voice actors I met that year complimented me on it. My point is, just have fun and don't be afraid to cosplay whatever you want. :) Sorry if this seems like I'm rambling I'm still half asleep lol.
Avenger of Fallen Rhyme I know, right? I'm super excited because I finally finished my Hattori Heiji cosplay this year. Mostly from things bought really cheap at Walmart, and the hat I got from eBay. I got to debut it at NDK this year so that was really awesome.
Sometimes I'd think cosplaying different au characters, fan characters, or oc characters is more fun cuz u get to experience more with stuff cuz if you cosplay someone that's cosplayed a lot the whole outfit will probably be in one place (not saying that's bad to cosplay as a popular character)
My best tip is an add-on to the internet is your friend tip: if you're cosplaying a character from a show, especially an outfit from a specific episode or something, just go and watch that show and take screenshots as much as you can from different angles! It'll help so much because Google images will only have a certain type of picture, but usually not an angle you might need. If it's a simpler cosplay it's probably fine but with my Genos cosplay it was invaluable with making the arms (specifically the back of them)
Yes that is what I am doing for my Ghirahim cosplay I am taking a bunch of screenshots of scenes he appears in at a million different angles and still to this day I am doing that! That is a very helpful piece of advice!
@@cosplaynewbie1125 I'm talking about the uniform lol. And as a 13 y/o who doesn't have any money to buy wigs/costumes/makeup, it's gonna be difficult. Especially since my mom doesn't know I want to cosplay
@@axthxrn Oh okay. I'm 12, I don't have any but my mom accepted it and is willing to pay for my stuff within reason, reccomend talking to her. It's fine to use your own hair, maybe leave the harness out, the jacket which u can get ebay for £11 and a simple white blouse and jeans. Hope it helped?
@@cosplaynewbie1125 Oh, thank you for the tips :3 I could use my hair, but it's a really dark brown and super short, and wouldn't fit most of the characters I wanna dress up as. And I honestly have no idea if my mom would be cool with me dressing up as characters, especially boys (I dressed up as Sally Face for Halloween, and she kept asking if I really wanted to be a boy). But yeah, I should probably just ask.
My first cosplay was Hatsune Miku at MechaCon 2017. It was a great time and i spent about two months with everything. Fairly simple cosplay and the wig is probably the hardest part to get ready just because it's got 3ft pigtails. But UA-cam helped with that lol 💙💙💙
god bless you for saying only compare yourself to you... i never thought of it like that but that's just the perfect thing to say to insecure people thank you
I'm so glad you found that helpful! I constantly feel insecure about my work and learned that that's a really good way to keep things in perspective and just to feel more confident, so it's something I really wanted to share. That being said, I'm really happy to hear that people find it helpful! 💕
I remember my first con, back in October! it was my first ever cosplay, and I had to throw it together in 2 days because I was invited really late and of course I was going to go, my favourite celebrity was going. My character was Sonia Nevermind from Danganronpa. I've got a few tips for anyone that was in a situation like me, who had no idea what they were doing. 1. You must wear make-up. You look isn't complete without it. But if your character has freckles, don't be afraid to draw them on, and if you have some yourself then go over them after light foundation. 2. I had to wear heels for 14 hours. I literally couldn't walk the next day. Always bring flats if you are walking around stalls for a large amount of time 3. Research your Cosplay! Get inspiration from others, don't be shy to ask for help. 4. Even if you have similar hair, try and get a wig. Because at the time I had blonde hair (purple now), I simply styled my own. It did not look good and was messed up within 3 hours. Try and get a wig 4. It doesn't have to be canon. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. You're a beginner, don't expect it to be perfect ^^ 5. Have Fun! A smile is the most important part of an outfit! unless of course you are doing a character that never smiles. Don't be afraid to smile still though! 6. If anyone follows you or begins hitting on you, stay near security. Some guy dressed as Mario kept following me, winking at me, and when I sat down with my friend to grab a coffee, he sat beside me and placed his hand on my thigh. We went straight to security and now we make jokes on how an Italian plumber hit on me. Be positive! ^^x
When you talked about cosplaying a character that you actually enjoy, I think a lot of people would think that to be common sense but I definitely think it's worth considering, especially when you're doing a group cosplay. I have a group of friends that are all doing a group cosplay from a game series that I've never even played, and I think it would for sure take fun out of the project if you're just jumping on the group bandwagon without really knowing much about the character.
Same here, i spent like 30 bucks at value village and bought a skirt and a white button up, a week later i had made an elaborate steampunk cos and that was my first cos... this was last year and its still my fave, except for i have to make new boots
"Give yourself as much time as you can" Wish last year me new that when my friend and I completely forgot about our cosplay and have 6 days to choose our characters, make the costumes and master the makeup. And my cosplay had a friggin tail and horns- I was Bendy FYI-
I'm just "starting" with cosplay (only planning to go to a convention) and I want to ask, is it ok to use things that are just laying around or in your closet, like a jacket, pants, ect.?
I did a Kiki cosplay once, and it was super last minute (The con was that morning, and I had no cosplay ready for friday due to an incident). I went through my closet and found a short black dress, and a big red bow and black flats. I just so happened to have a black cut wig with bangs laying around...that was my whole coaplay. Its perfectly fine to do so
It is totally okay. That is what I like to call "Closet" Cosplay. I will admit. I pretty much buy all of my cosplays (because the closest thing I've ever come to really sewing was a little doll with my dad years ago that was never even completed) and I don't feel an ounce of shame in that. Although I would like to actually sew a cosplay at least once. Anyway back to my original point. Sometimes finding cosplay pieces in your closet may be the easiest and most cost efficient option at the time (especially if it's a piece that you can still use for everyday wear) and there is nothing wrong with that. In my opinion it's as AnyaPanda has said. You cosplay for you. Not for other. Ultimately you should do what will make you to the most comfortable and happy. Just as long as you're happy with your cosplay and having fun. :) I know my husband who has been going to conventions and cosplaying for about 9 years has noticed that over time his cosplay preferences has gravitated more towards more comfortable and casual cosplays. For example he is putting together a Lance cosplay from Voltron Legendary Defender. We'll buy the jacket but other than that he has picked out a comfy pair of jeans, tennis shoes that are pretty close (because it can be a challenge to get super accurate footwear sometimes, and then you also have to consider comfort) and a plain grey t-shirt with a navy blue collar.
...I bought a white collared shirt and a gray formal-style shirt and customized them, then added dark-colored business-style pants, then bought a red tie (not a clip-on; a legit tie) and that's what I've got- *I also have Bakugo's shoes, and didn't realize until a month after I got them-*
My first cosplay was dipper pines you know normal clothes and my hair look like his soooo yeah it was easy. Also this year I'll cosplay as veronica Sawyer (from heathers the musical) and I'm letting my hair grow because I don't like wigs
I know how you feel. I asked my mom to spend like $30 on a mask for my Kaneki cosplay. As someone who had never seen Tokyo Ghoul, she was a little confused/weirded out 😂
you don’t need to if you don’t want to! but if you wanna like do do do it :D, it’s like wearing contacts for cosplay, you don’t need to if ur not comfortable with it :)
try making it look as scary or disgusting as possible! I want to try a cosplay as a spooky corpse robot (Cyn) from a show Called murder drones, and she is utterly terrifying and probably gonna be so much fun!
I know that you probably have been cosplaying for a long time but I would like to see a time lapse of your favorite cosplays and maybe a little bit of a back story. Please consider this idea. 😇
This is a tip: if your doing a anime character or a doki doki literature character see if they have a casual outfit! If not see there style and try and make a casual outfit. I’m going to be doing a yuri cosplay and I’ll be doing her home outfit because it’s more comfy and easy to do!
For Halloween this year I'm going to be cosplaying as Shiro from Voltron (I've never been to a con and I don't think I'll be going to one anytime soon). I started watching the show and knew I wanted to cosplay someone from it during the first episode (Wanted to do Pidge/Katie at first, but then decided to do Shiro because I thought making a robot arm would be fun). I was going to do Yurio from Yuri!!! on Ice, but I would have just bought the costume, which isn't as fun. I've barely made anything on the cosplay, but I'm already having a lot of fun. My dad's been helping me with it, and he's going to make a cosplay of someone from The Winter Soldier, so we're both going to be cyborgs!
That's awesome!! My first cosplay was Keith from voltron and lol my dad also helped me! It was super fun and surprisingly a lot of people came up to me and talked to me and asked me for pictures
okay the tip against halloween store wigs somewhat bugs me. Personally i own two of them and theyre great! my one is pink (used for roxy lalonde from homestuck at first, soon to be a natsuki wig from DDLC) and it is pretty thick, not shiny at all (less shiny than my amazon wigs) it only cost $8, and is incredibly easy to style. My second one isnt as good of quality but its black and curly. It was bought to be joey claire from hiveswap and even though its shiny, its very manageable and looks quite good and it was very affordable.
Idc that im 2 years late but when she said that you have to make sure to choose a caracter that meand a lot to you i was like; TENYA IIDA IS BEST BOI OFCOURSE HE MEANS SOMETHING TO MEHH
@@novamidoriya Yes! people do it without the "y," without the last "i," and probably countless others that I've not yet seen. I kinda prefer his last name to his hero name, tbh-
Actually he is a bit more complex than you think! If you are doing a cosplay and are not being in character yes he is easy but in character it is hard to lean at the angle he does and is tiring to sit like him! I think light is actually more simple but good luck!
@@daimondrakelokison7814 *me reading this comment thinking about how my friend teases me cause I literally sit and walk like L* yeah, that is true having L’s posture isn’t something I could ever master
I was L for last halloween and let me tell you, HE HAS THE WORST POSTURE EVER. My back ACHED for days after I did it because of how he sits and walks. But it was still really fun!! (If you wanna good place to take photos for him, go to a local Ice-Cream shop)
I don't know how to get into makeup. Especially since it costs a lot. And my sister and cousin told me not to get into it. But I want to cosplay, so I'm not really sure what to do and where to start...
A good place to start is by looking at makeup tutorials! Find out what kind of makeup you want to do, and have an idea of what kind of makeup will be best for your skin and the look you want. As for actually buying makeup, I would absolutely start at your local drugstore. Start by getting the basics, like foundation, eyeliner, mascara, blush, and maybe a little eyeshadow palette of neutrals, and build from there as your budget allows. Jordana, Wet 'n Wild, and e.l.f. are all very cheap drugstore brands that are actually quite nice for the price.
HELL YES BOI I was wanting to do Shiggy for my first, since it's basically just black hoodies and pants(which I have, like, 20 pairs of-). Broski, we need to team up at some point- Get someone to do Toga, Twice, Compress, *maybe* Chisaki-
When I did my first cosplay I did honey senpai which was a very good and simple one, now I have slowly made my way up to the full idolized love live cyber Honoka costume!
I really wanna try Stevonnie ahhh. I already have everything set for 2D though, so he'll be my first cosplay. Or the first one I'll openly admit or am serious about lol.
Ik I’m a year late, but I see you all over Gorillaz videos lol. I also want to try to cosplay 2D at some point, mainly because he’s pretty simple design wise. The only hard part might be the hair and eyes lol. I already have a pretty lithe build, and I’m tall. Mostly legs too. I am a female biologically, but I can bind my chest, which I already do sometimes. So this is late but ✌️
just a tip for cosplaying in my hero acadamia just get the tournament jump suit an any wig from any class mate that's can be in 1-A will still look like the charator!
I’m doing my first cosplay this Friday for my birthday we are having a Voltron themed party and I’m Shiro. Hopefully I do good! Edit: P.S. I make my own wigs out of yarn, glue, and wig caps lmao. The always look real so that’s pretty good!
*when your a chubby 10 year old girl and wanna dress up as the hot anime guys ;-;* edit: Hey guys, just to be clear, I'm 12, Trans boy, and realized that i can cosplay anybody, even girls, boys, any other gender, cosplay is fluid and nobody can stop that, thank for all of your support. -Rogue
Hey, you can cosplay whoever you like regardless of race gender weight or age, cosplay is to have fun, so do whatever you like so long as you have fun with it!
so i’m just recently getting into cosplay, and my first one is going to be dipper. when you said the 5 rule, i started counting how many pieces and then you said the Pines twins as an example so.. it’s good to know that they’re a good beginner cosplay :)
I'm somewhat new to cosplay, i do it often and have been since May of this year, and this was really helpful! I don't handsew my own cosplays but usually closet cosplay them. I actually ordered my first full cosplay today and i'm really excited!! These really helped alot as well!!
I'm sort of conscious since I'm a 10 yr old and I absolutely love cosplay. I want to cosplay shouto todoroki and I have no friends to cosplay with especially since none of them watch bnha. I try to find other stuff for one friend who wants to cosplay with me. I think honestly the worst part is that one of my close friends hate cosplay and was shaming me since I like anime and I would probably cosplay. I'm also scared of buying all my cosplay stuff since if my friend joins me too I have to buy her stuff too. I guess she's not cosplaying with me.
Hun, if you really love something and your friends dont support you thats not on you, id say reach out, there are bound to be cosplayer near you that like similar things! I for examle cosplay Todoroki and a few other bnha characters, if you need support I'll help you okat okay? The fans have to stick together
aaa, hey!! im also 11- i dont have the best experience with makeup, so i have to experiment with my older sisters makeup, and ngl she gets mad at me but its fine!! im still a beginner at cosplaying, as ive only started about a month ago, but having fun is all its about, right? my first cosplay involved a lot of eyeshadow( it was dabi from mha!) for the scars and such, so it was sorta weird but fun!!
I want to start cosplaying like for the first time and it really helps me finding all these tips for cosplays. And i am so so grateful that my mother knows about cosplays and comic con and the fun that you get from it and helps me get my dream come true. Hope everyone has a supportive relative and if u don't remember that u can do it and show them how far u can accomplish on your own.
I’m cosplaying Kyoko Kirigiri from Danganronpa THH I already had most of the pieces in my closet before I knew what Danganronpa WAS My progress thus far: Gloves: ✅ Skirt: ✅ Boots: ✅ Tights: ✅ Shirt: ✅ Jacket: ✅ Socks: ✅ Necktie: ❌ Way more than five pieces but at least I don’t have to make anything except the tie I’m too broke to buy a wig so I think I’ll just style my hair kinda like hers Wish me luck! 😂
Thank you so much, I was worried for months about how to approach my next cosplay, trying to plan doing it as accurate and perfect at an inhumane level, that terrified me. Instead of helping me improve by setting high goals, it restricted me to the point I couldn't even start because of the fear of failure. You are brutally right, I should compare only to my previous attempts not to everyone more skilled than me. Also the whole point is having fun, stressing so much for something I haven't even touched isn't fun at all lmao. I still fear a bit, but this video gave me the motivation to actually start. THANKS!!
I'd just like to add that got2b is not available outside of the US, and I dont know if it's different in other countries but in Australia we cant order it from overseas because customs wont allow it through 😑 So good luck if you're not a US based Cosplay
Ty for this! Im doing a casual clothed Denki Kaminari cosplay this fall and im super excited, my aunt used to work in costume design and she is gonna get me a wig and contacts for my bday and she said she would help me :3
I’m an older person, curious about Cosplay. You are such an articulate, intelligent, positive woman. I loved watching your video and hearing your great tips. Keep up the fabulous work.
This is super helpful, because I want to start cosplaying!!❤💖💕
AnyaPanda are you going to comic con this year? I am it's my first convention. Your videos are so helpful and entertaining.
AnyaPanda can you make a video about wig styling for beginners?
There are plenty of tutorials for that already, just look on Google or UA-cam and you'll find tons.
Not really a tip, but more of a reminder: IT'S OK TO BUY A COSPLAY.
2- bit Cosplay Thanks for the reminder. I always felt a bit down that I always bought my cosplays because I thought someone would shame me for it. (P.S.I'm 12 and I suck at sewing.) So seeing this made my day.☺️
(Fun Fact: I always have been good at wig styling)
THANKS!! I felt bad too but now i dont anymore lol
Yes!! I have always bought my cosplays and it doesn't make you any less of a cosplayer! Every once in a while I feel down about not making cosplays but I'm really bad at crafts cause I over think everything and I can't sew! Just make sure you give credit where credit is due when buying cosplays ^^
2-bit Cosplay For us talentless bunch. 😂
yes! rejoice :D
My tip for beginner cosplayers is to make sure that your cosplay is ok for the weather at the con. You don't want to burn/freeze in your cosplay.
Holy shit i was gonna cosplay a rwby character this summer but now i realize that theyre outfits are for winter thanks
Yes!! I walked around for hours as Gaara from Naruto in the horrible summer heat of Florida
I'm gomn suffer with my spandex space suit in the southern heat
My cosplay is good for almost all year unless its super cold cuz his outfit (evil version) is changeable from short to long and I pretty sure it will be hot out so my Fav version of his (evil) outfit
Cosmic Fall Yeah good luck with that, I always burn just in tshirts and the con is in a month and its already hot hahahahaha im doomed
Simmons thanks !b
Small details are my favourite things to do in my cosplays
#1 Oh my god this. The first time I wore my Sally cosplay out I walked around for 4 hours straight in ankle boots with pencil thin heels and no back ups. By the end of the night I was f e e l i n g the pain with each step, like my feet were throwing a revolt for what I put them through lol! Never again
Thank you! :)
"wears heals"
my immediate thought: M E R C Y
Another quick tip,
You DON'T have to have the outfit to cosplay the character, you can get something similar to something the character might wear and it doesn't have to be exact.
GingerExpress Ty, that was something that I was just thinking about and rn I’m only mapping out my first cosplay (as in like buying clothing specifically for a character and not just doing a closet cosplay) and I don’t want to jump straight to designing my own clothes just yet and... well, idk
But thank you for saying this!!
You must love all K A N G A R O O S Hey! If you don’t like having closet cosplays and like having outfits similar to the characters outfit, if you use eBay or aliexpress you can find diffrent articles of the outfit and buy them separately FOR MUCH cheeper then a full cosplay.
is it ok that i only have the wig to a cosplay im doing? i wasn't able to buy the actual outfit or bandana for it :(
earl grey milk tea ;anything is okay! Your hair can be used as a supplement for a wig :)

my beginner tip is to always carry a deck of cards in your con bag! you can find yourself waiting in long lines or with lots of downtime between panels and it’s a great way to make friends
Ayyyy very smart! :D
I do this when I go camping! Just make sure you remember how to play ;p Snap is a good one to pick up easily but I also like Knockout Whist and Pig
Great tip! Another one that saved me at PAX South was having a battery back-up for my cell phone. That purchase alone was so worth it.

Buying your cosplay is fine
Using your own hair is alright
Is your cosplay not 100% accurate? That's okay!
Are you unsure of cosplaying a character because you are a different race, gender or have a different body type? It doesn't matter! It's about having fun
Doing AUs and OCs are okay
hAvE fUn
You made me feel better for when I try to do a bomberman cosplay ouo
I am going to cosplay as a little witch academa character for Toronto comic Con 2019 but they have longer hair than me so I'm using a wig
I‘m going as Harley Quinn. Bc i have split red and black hair like the comic harley... so it‘s still my hair lol

Moonlit Rose AMEN
So maybe next year im gonna cosplay as kaede akamatsu from danganronpa v3 and i will need bobby pins
not just for the wig, for the hairclips too. bobby pins are gonna save me
Not just bobby pins but an "emergency fix kit" with stuff like safety pins, tape, maybe a small sewing kit, etc. You never know what's going to happen and you never know when you might need to fix your cosplay a little
This might be a weird question but-
I have a shaved head, would i still need to use a wig cap?
Don't be afraid to do au's or different versions!
my friend and I are cosplaying as Mabel Pines from gravity falls and Mabel Gleeful from the reverse AU at IndyPopCon2018.

It doesn't need to be fully accurate, it's about having fun
My character is a blue haired girl
I guess I’m gonna get a purplish reddish wig with blue tips instead
Lol
I agree! I went to my second con by myself and had a great time. Thanks for the tip on the undertones.
FOUND THAT OUT THE HARD WAY LMAO. Bought a bright yellow wig when I have a cool undertone and I look awful unu
Just a personal tip I have that has worked well again and again
when i cosplayed levi from aot at a con, someone came up to me and told me: you're the best levi here but you are a girl so you're not
i was really offended and mad and let him alone xO
so if anyone says shit about you and your cosplay, don't let it pull you down and simply ignore them -w-
Meaghan Priestley I have a question; I would LOVE to cosplay Clementine from the walking dead games. With a tan I can match her skin color, but I'm still worried about people being mad because I'm not mixed race. Should I still do it? I wouldn't actually have to paint my face or anything like that so I think it should be fine???
Emi the Ghost you should it doesn’t matter of your race as long as you’re having fun

Not a tip: cosplaying your OC('s) is ok!!!
YES!! 👏🏻
My first cosplays were those! Yay
Yes!!!!
My first cosplay is going to be an oc of mine because I can make up their whole backstory and everything
That was my first cosplay. My rpg group didn't larp or dress up but I was sorting all my things and came across a wig from a couple of Halloween ago that matched a new character I was playing. Popped into some thrift shops and some clothes I already had and Tilly Wilde entered the real world.
YES my first cosplay was one of my OCs
Don’t also forget, Thrift Stores have helped me a lot throughout my costumes or clothes similar to my cosplay.
Nice Tsuyu pfp-
I once went to my local thrift store and they had some werewolf feet shoes. (dont ask)
Before when I was a noob I had my mom sew my cosplay. One day she said "no". So I became an INDEPENDENT HUMAN BEING. I ended up with poking my finger 27 times 😁
"I ended up with poking my finger 27 times"
That is why you get a sewing machine. XD
CommanderCreative
I'll end up sewing my sleeve to the machine 😂😂
Ouch but yet inspiring
oof relatable!
'OTL
Lol heels don't bother be much, its a peace of cake.. that is until only the end of the day
YES! personally, I have dodgy knees and ankles from dance injuries and the right shoes are essential.
Divine Dragons
This comment helped me a lot :,)
Thank you !! :)
Coming from somebody who’s parents won’t allow them to wear contacts
And nails because I want to become a licensed nail tech so I will try anything on myself any chance I get
Make-up just makes me very uncomfortable and upset, so it's good to hear that other people feel comfortable cosplaying with no/minimal make-up

How'd you convince your mom/dad/guardian that cosplaying wasn't weird, or get them to take you to the cons?

Your first cosplay won't be perfect. You can't force perfection into a novice, so of course you get better at cosplay by practicing. Other people at cons will be just as scared as you are, no matter how experienced. "Is my wig going to hold?" "Is my makeup blotchy?" "Did I forget my badge in the hotel?" It's best to try and enjoy yourself while you're there.

I'd compare it to dressing up for Halloween, but my mum was really understanding so I wouldn't worry too much about it
Tell them to get over it. Just because they dont understand something, it doesnt make it weird.
Eria Yuki It's completely alright! I totally think that's super fun to do. I also love doing fan things.
Avenger of Fallen Rhyme I know, right? I'm super excited because I finally finished my Hattori Heiji cosplay this year. Mostly from things bought really cheap at Walmart, and the hat I got from eBay. I got to debut it at NDK this year so that was really awesome.
Eria Yuki I feel you!

I almost died when she mentioned the pines twins because my first cosplay was Wendy. I made my mom and aunt be the twins!
Oooooh I used to love her so much I bet your cosplay looked amazing!!! My first cosplay was Yuki from Vampire Knight!=)
god bless you for saying only compare yourself to you... i never thought of it like that but that's just the perfect thing to say to insecure people thank you

Always bring flats if you are walking around stalls for a large amount of time
3. Research your Cosplay! Get inspiration from others, don't be shy to ask for help.
4. Even if you have similar hair, try and get a wig. Because at the time I had blonde hair (purple now), I simply styled my own. It did not look good and was messed up within 3 hours. Try and get a wig
4. It doesn't have to be canon. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. You're a beginner, don't expect it to be perfect ^^
The thing is I have the motivation just not the money

I am dead Inside Nice, hope to see you there :p
I'm just "starting" with cosplay (only planning to go to a convention) and I want to ask, is it ok to use things that are just laying around or in your closet, like a jacket, pants, ect.?
Totally!
Yep! For my Light Yagami cosplay, I only bought the tie. Everything else I made from stuff laying around the house.
Yep! It’s fine, my mom made a whole Ochako cosplay by just buying the wig and using stuff for her closet
I'm going to style a Deku/Izuku Midoriya wig. I might possibly buy the UA uniform in future to save myself some time.
...I bought a white collared shirt and a gray formal-style shirt and customized them, then added dark-colored business-style pants, then bought a red tie (not a clip-on; a legit tie) and that's what I've got-
*I also have Bakugo's shoes, and didn't realize until a month after I got them-*

Woah that's super cool, i really want to start a pidge cosplay , but now I'm veering towards a matt lol

Cool. For my Frost cosplay this year I'm cosplaying as Wendy Marvell from fairy tail
okay the tip against halloween store wigs somewhat bugs me.

Savon Vanderbloemen Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, I was worried for months about how to approach my next cosplay, trying to plan doing it as accurate and perfect at an inhumane level, that terrified me. Instead of helping me improve by setting high goals, it restricted me to the point I couldn't even start because of the fear of failure. Also the whole point is having fun, stressing so much for something I haven't even touched isn't fun at all lmao. I still fear a bit, but this video gave me the motivation to actually start. THANKS!!
